S Jones is correct. I have 35 years experience with both Espar and Webasto hot air and hydronic furnaces. Due to inefficiency of combustion, much of the heat is in the exhaust tubing. I would also put the pump under the cabin or the clicking will drive you out.
HI guys I'm really concerned with your diesel heater install. The exhaust gets extremely hot, red hot actually please don't have it inside the van! I'd Urge you to re think the positioning of your unit and place it somewhere so that "everything" including the fuel line can exit the van directly under the heater unit itself. The fuel pump needs to be mounted on an angle otherwise it will not work correctly and malfunction. The muffler needs to be mounted horizontally so that the moisture will drain through the drain hole. Take away any plastic and rubber from the exhaust otherwise you'll have a fire. Love your build and progress and my advice comes from experience and genuine concern.
Hi guys, the mount is ok, Ihave this style of heater in my boat, (Ebespacher?) so obviously they can be completely inside on a metal mount plate quite safely, BUT your exhaust needs some fireproof type of wrap NOT rubber. The pump tick is only noticeable on first prime, not noticed when unit runs normally. Great build job, well done, enjoying binge watch. Stu uk
Looking so good....the finish line is in sight now guys!!! Am sure there will be little things to add, remove and amend once you live in it but for now it seems you have ticked all the boxes. You both seem to consider and ponder a lot on things before committing to it as well as taking comments and experiences of others into account. As they say - learn from others mistakes as life is too short to make them all yourself!
Thank you so much Andre! We're trying as much as we can to tick all the boxes even though we know some things may need to be improved. Looking forward to finally testing our set up soon! Thank you for watching :)
On your diesel heater pump, you might want to research if it should be on an angle. Everything I've read says having that at 15 degree or more angle with fuel intake on the low side will prevent pump issues and premature failure. I have the same heater but haven't run into issues yet so not positive how important it is. Just something to consider :)
@@TheOutFit Josh is absolutely correct. Also, you could mount the pump below the floor deck on the outside which will further reduce the clicking noise for those inside.
Hey mate. That 5kw heater will definitely do the job. Put the same into my 19foot caravan and have to keep turned low as very efficient. You are right about the container they are crap there are metal ones available which will suit your needs especially if you take it overseas
Hi Guys was so good to meet you both at the show, thanks for taking the time to talk to us The Mog looks great Thanks again Chris for being kind enough to talk to us on the Friday Bill and Sue
I didn't read all the comments so someone might of already said it but you have the slide on the door upside down, it will lock open by gravity instead of having to push the slide bar up. Very common in electrical switchboards.
@@TheOutFit From what I can see, the bar (or the pin on the door end) needs to be flipped upside down from where it is in the video, and also needs to hang under the slide on the door. Gravity should definitely take over and allow it to lock automatically when the door opens, then push the pin up to unlock. Some people have suggested spring loading the pin or the bar, but I feel this would cause binding on the slide & not allow it to slide smoothly. Really enjoying the build & looking forward to the day you can get back on (or is it off) the road full time.
Bonjour, bravo magnifique travail et merci pour la traduction en français. C’est vrai que la mousse de 10 cm est un peu épaisse, je pense que 5 cm est bien suffisant mais ce n’est que mon avis. Bonne continuation. Un petit suisse.
I have an idea for your door hinge fix if someone hasn't already mentioned it. Get yourself a little spring and washer to install instead of the R-clip. That way when the door opens it pops up and creates a positive pressure in the locating hole. Then you just pull down on the arm to release it.
Excellent job guys. Suggestion…. I always put a “tennis ball “ sized radius on the wood for the bed/ couch install. The corner closest to the door…..😁👌🏼
Diesel tank of 20 litres will last around 10-12 days if you don't run it all night. We have one in our VW camper and it burns around 2 litres per night on low. Agree with the heat in the exhaust, it's very hot. Also all the kits have the rubber damper mount for the pump. Either buy a quiet one on line or remove the rubber mount as this tends to amplify the pump click and hang it free from a couple of tie wraps. I tried all sorts to quieten ours. Love the build
@@TheOutFit if you find one let me know lol. There is a Facebook forum for the Chinese diesel heaters. Lots of info on there but basically due to the way they work the click is standard. If you can get it under the Mog outside then all the better.
Absolutely agree with previous comments. The exhaust pipe gets REALLY hot. If you have to leave it where it is, perhaps you could make a cover for it? Plus if you mount the fuel pump outside & under the truck (at the correct angle), you should barely notice the ticking noise - if at all. Where it is now, it will probably drive you nuts. :) Enjoying the build.
Great episode, I’m a safety professional for a construction company and it’s great to see you wearing safety glasses and respirator’s when your sanding. Guys, the build is really coming along super👍 That plywood looks like 🤔 Baltic Birch, at least it’s the name for it in the US 🇺🇸, it’s the best plywood. Suggestion for your dining table top; Double up the perimeter to make it seem as thick as that beautiful countertop. Then stain the table top to color match the kitchen countertop and seal it with 3-4 coats of quality water-based polyurethane. Also consider maybe making the tabletop oval shaped to soften the squareness of the surrounding pieces. Oh, and use a router with a rounding bit to smooth the edges of the table. Rounding-off the edges (top & bottom) will add a nice look with the stain… Not that you need me to tell you how to build, just my 10¢s 😜
Hey guys, well done on your amazing build and thank you for allowing us to enjoy the journey with you. I had a question, how sure are you that glueing the overhead cabinet to the box will hold with all the weight of everything you will store in it? The box will endure a lot of bashing and vibration especially when going off road...I've worked with glues a lot and over time even sika become brittle. Just hope it all works out and you've researched this. All the best to you guys. Can't wait for the next episode.
Thanks a lot Dan for following along! We always use MS polymer and so far we have been really impressed with it. This is the product we used for our stairs which we have now used for months. Having so many people at the 4wd show going in and out of the camper also really gave us extra confidence in the product. We'll just make sure we don't put anything too heavy in the overhead storage.
The Table - maybe cut that sheet of ply down the middle and rejoin it with 'piano' hinge (or other specialist table 'leaf' hinge). this would give you a smaller table for day to day use and would flip open when you need a bigger table. That big table would be in the way for day to day use. You have to google how drop leaf or extendable dinning tables work - but they are quite simple (especially the traditional old methods of just sliding timber rail supports) The 'Laguna' style table leg support is designed for this type of table as you can manipulate the table location for when you have a smaller top or when it is fully open to be central to where you want it to be. Imagine one of you wanting to work at the table and the other sitting opposite reading a book or relaxing - having a smaller table makes it more practical - not getting in the way of the person working or concentrating as you can get in and out much more easily - and to make them coffee when they need one :)
For anchoring your awning, I have some cheap nylon backpacks, with the string straps (Amazon $5 for 10) that I fill with sand when stakes aren’t a solid option. On the beach it works great. High wind days I bury then a bit
The pump for your diesel heater should be closer to the fuel tank and below the tank. They are a push pump, not a pull pump. The pump also needs to be mounted so the pump is at about a 45° angle, the outlet needs to be below the inlet. Also don't wrap the exhaust as it will get red hot. When I install a diesel heater I have the exhaust, inlet and fuel line coming through a 120mm hole in the floor, I mount the heater offset to the hole so there's as much clearance as possible between the exhaust and floor. Really enjoying watching your build.
Hi Chris and Ange, you're making great progress. Hey guys if you turn the bracket up the other way on your doorstop the bar will fall down and lock instead of having to lift it up to lock. Well that's the way it looks to me may be different in person.

Theres youtube vids on why the hard fuel line is better. I love our diesel heater in our forward fold camper!
Just a quick comment on the fuel tank for the heater, if it gets below 0 degree the diesel may get thicken and so the heater could stop working, so just keep that kit tank and find a place for it inside the van
Diesel heater John McK47. His videos answer all questions, he worked on them for a living. I have just got a pipe glued which hold the fuel line, then I just pull out and put in jerry.
It's a really light cabinet and we make sure to use a MS polymer. This is the product we used to attach our stairs which holds both my weight and Chris' weight everyday multiple times a day. We also had A LOT of people in and out the camper at the show, no issues at all.
Hi guys, I am no expert in heating (living in the NT), but can’t you put the heater in the under tray tool box? Keep everything outside and just run the duct into the canopy?
There’s no problem in having the unit inside, I had one professionally fitted under the drivers seat of my truck which I drove and lived in for 7 years in Europe, but the exhaust went straight outside.

Is it safe to have a fuel line inside the cabin? I have no idea myself, however if you get a leak or some other incident.
Diesel isn't as flammable as petrol so should be ok. I would be more concerned about the smell if there was a leak.
nice to see that you care about lumbar support. long term effects of wrong sitting can be a b*tch.
You shouldn’t blow the heat underneath the table. It will be to hot under the table to stay sit.
It would have taken you maximum 1 day with a belt sander
We can't buy every single tool
Just to let you know, you will suffer from dry mouth if you use the diesel heater for a long time, such as over night.
We probably wouldn't leave it on overnight - just a few hours before bed to warm up the camper :)
Your cabinet fit a air vent. The fan on heater got not much power and if closed system will choke heater.
why did put your diesel heater on the outside and hose heating inside that keeps heat away from inside why working?
