Concerned to see you welding on the top of the truck frame rail. I have a Class 8 heavy truck and have always been told that welding on the top of the frame rails, or drilling holes in them, compromises the frame. It adds stress to the steel that can crack under load. Should always bolt a bracket to the side of the frame and then weld to that.
Welding anywhere on Unimog frame rails is strictly forbidden by Mercedes. It causes cracking due to the huge amount of torsional flex the frame is designed for. Anything attached to a Unimog frame must be bolted or riveted, and only through the vertical portion. He should have mounted the porch slider to the bed frame. With Australia's crazy inspection requirements I'm guessing that will have to be re-worked.
hey guys, your going great. re the shower pipe - try not to leave the hose at a 90o horizontal the flex and weight of it will prematurely wear the press join and will leak/ crack, especially with the off roading too. also, re the wet area shower/ toilet, in our old jayco expanda combo shower/ toilet unit we put a shower curtain on the wall so the curtain would drape over the toilet and be less wet from showering. i really like the stairs and glad to see you took my suggestion. lol.
I also recommend you install a handle on the inside of the entry door, near the hinge, so you can grab it upon entry or exit for the mornings you dont feel 100% on you feet. Also, maybe limit the door opening to 90 degrees so you can lean against it, and so it closes off that fall risk from your entry platform which is a real risk when the door is open closer to 180 degrees.
I recommend putting the shower head in the corner to maximise space, and taps on the internal wall just above elbow height on the internal wall close to the shower pole height adjuster. Looking good guys. Keen to see how you seal the floor and corners, as well as have fall in the floor towards a floor waste. Keep up the good work.
Not sure if others have commented but I would suggest a telescopic leg to go under top slideout step. You could store it possibly underneath or on top of slideout with a retainer cup at one end & a pin with R-clip the other. Not sure if permanently attached under slideout with pivot hinge will work with available length but would be best idea. Have a platform plate for on the ground with retainer ring to slip end of foot into for sand & unlevel ground
Guys love the progress. My interest in your project for me started because I stripped unimogs for the Australian army but now it's about your journey sorry have never watched any of your early stuff but l will. Shower just put a second shower rose attachment over the sink .A longer rubber hose and it could go out side for washing mud or sand off you or stuff.Using the kiss principal.
So glad to find you guys I am half way thru building a 5m off road caravan , built out of 75mm cold room panel roof walls floor etc .Similier internal design ideas top stuff. Great work guys. P.S gentlemen always sit when sharing dunny with elequent lady.
may be a bit late, but have you looked at a product called alupanel, it was originally designed for exterior signage. it is super strong comes in every colour, 3mm thick standard 1220 by 2400 sheets, can get it in 3600 by special order. I'm a signwriter so I use it a lot, but I've been using it for everything including making a trailer for the walls, boat floor too, splash backs for the kitchen. it is great stuff and white is about $50 a sheet it is 2-pack sprayed alloy with a perspex 3mm core
If you had extended the bearing carrier out further, say flush with edge of the box you would greatly reduce the lever effect. Im sure over time the current design will give you issues....in my opinion. Great show....
if by issues you mean broken bones, i concur! Widening the platform would be a much safer option and greatly reduce the likelyhood of the hinge failing, or simply missing the step as its only half width.
You made the right choice in going with a composting toilet. We just removed our expensive flush toilet and put in a composting toilet. Wonderful change. You’ll be happy to hear there is no smell as long as you keep the urine separate. But men have to compromise and learn to sit when they pee.
Seems like you are trying to reinvent the wheel with some of your ideas, but good on you for doing it yourself. A household shower head will use way too much water, a caravan low flow one would be better. We hang a half width shower curtain from 2 hooks on the back wall to cover the toilet while showering in our van, keeps it dry so less wiping down after.
LOL Loved how you (Chris) is so pumped about his step/steps Great job Mate. Ange can you please say aluminium 5 times strait . Mog is really coming along. :)
If I may offer a suggestion on your pullout platform. If you install a wiper in front of the bearings to knock off dirt, sand and mud it will run smoother.
i nearly left was watching yall when things changed and you tube cut them off lol glad yall are back i love and want a Uni but here in the states they are difficult to get .
Make sure you fit the bpex tubes in the hot water pipes, and on all the fitting fit the red locking rings which stop the pipes working their way out/loose. I can't add a pic so just Google these bits. Also try and use genuine John guest fittings as the knock offs are not quite as good
Also, make sure to use a proper pie cutter and make sure you push the fitting all the way home. Don't over tighten the threaded fittings as they can crack
Great job on the steps. I would like to suggest building an attachment to the bars just under the door that will allow you to attach the steps for a straight up entry (made so can remove and store with steps when not in use). A second choice for stair placement is always a good idea for when main entry way is not needed or simply can't get to it (too much mud or snow/ice built up over the slider). Tube and/or rubber rim flap make good sealing material for the slider to keep road elements out. Put the bush bars back on the front and there's an outside changing table (go team Chris) LOL. Might I suggest to you a very large Kitchen sink it is 1 thing I always wanted in my camper living days (dang things are never big enough). This would also solve the where are you going to bath a baby concern that's been bothering me with how small the bathroom is. Looking forward to more way too short but oh so addicting content 😊.
Toilet looks good nice fab work for standing water don't make the toilet level couple degrees to let the water drain off then a hydroscopic coating could be added later that beads the water off also easier to wipe clean.
So sorry to hear you got hacked... I am still sub'ed and will continue to follow your journey to build your dream tiny home now and into the future! Keep your chin up and drive on! Aloha
Mate.. It's behind the axles on a truck designed to carry 7000KG payload. Some small welds are not going to do shit. Drilling holes in the top of the frame rails would be way worse.
Can I suggest thinking about the drain hole in the shower cubicle. Unless you park-up exactly level the water will pool in a corner rather than draining down the plug-hole. Some RVers have 2 drains to cater for water pooling. My RV only has one and I never seem to park-up so the slope allows water to go down the hole!
Hi if the toilet was positioned on the wall (if it fitted ) on the wall on left it would free up more room for the shower and the toilet wouldn't get as wet. just a thought. Ian
Love your channel but very very unsure you supposed to be welding to a chassis. Possibly a bracket could have been welded to the angle piece facing down against the chassis then bolted through. Maybe 🤔
Loving the series guys, but couple of issues in this ep Welding across the top of the chassis is a big no-no, causes metal fatigue and greatly increases the risks of the chassis failing. The slide out landing for the steps - any chance you can widen it to have it the full width of the door, instead of half width? Can see someone missing the step and breaking a bone. Also, would remove the risk of the hinge failing like one of those sideshow games where you peg balls at the target and the hinge releases when you hit it, dropping the person in the water. Only in this case, they break something!
HI Guys _ love your stuff! has it already been mentioned? Minimal water use will be a thing I'm sure. Have you thought of fitting a water Recirculation system? By that I mean - fit a water receptor high up on the wall by the shower head. Put the shower head in there so that the fresh water returns to your water tank (high enough so that soapy water can't get into it. When the temp is correct take a quick rinse then put it back. Soap up the bod with out water, then take a quick rinse - shower done for just a few litre of water
Really clever stair design, well done guys! 👍🏻 When I saw the tube for liquids the first thing that struck me was that the tube was of that wrinkle type (don’t know what it’s called) and that it might collect some urine in the cracks not getting it all flushed out and create some unnecessary smell, would a smoother type of hose be better? There's a shower screen glue Bunnings sells it's semi mastic to allow it to move a little when it heats up when having a shower so it doesn't crack the plastic. Word of warning if your using that it didn't stick well to the water proofing I used at the base the base of my shower and it's bubbled a little. Just make sure it's compatible and will stick. Are you guys doing a water proofing membrane in the bathroom or a fibreglass tub?

absolutely 100 percent correct ! . sorry, but I unsuccessfully persevered with a composting toilet for years and they are just not successful. I tried fan's, sprays, separators and you name it. trust me. not worth the headache.
I think your platform for your steps should be a bit wider than that., and build a handrail for your platform that can be fitted after you open or roll out the platform as you do with the steps.., Cheers Chris & Ange
Looks like Chrisy boy will hav to sit down for a weeeeee! There's nothing wrong with that, most people with composting toilets hav the same problem, try to pee straight in the bowl on a yaght in a swell of any kind, best to sit down, steps look really good, like your engineering on the step out slide, great going, hand rail would be a good idea, so you don't walk of the edge after a few drinks, 🥳🤕😜
Maybe a flat panel on the wall behind the toilet that folds down on an angle to protect the toilet or some sort of shower curtain which i have used before ? Take Care Guys.
Great watching and nice to see that Chris has found some 'pep in his steps'. Keep up the progress. 👍 Maybe a handle on the side of the door incase you lose your balance on the steps.
Ok love the loo. I have had a separett before and they are great, I have also just built one similar to yours for my container Bach and this is what I can add. have the fan as high as you can those little fans do a great job. change the urine hose to a smooth one to stop urine crystal build up, and yes guys sit to pee. Have fun.
Love the draw slide fabrication. Was there a reason why you didn't make it 2 times the width? That way you wouldn't have to have the fold out piece to give a bigger platform at the top. Love the vid!
Welding of the chassis aside, it's done now and there's no point getting hung up on it! Given the unimog chassis is designed to flex I'd consider using some long u bolts or something similar as a backup to secure the platform to the chassis in-case the welds crack over time. Loving the build guys!
Guys. Don't weld your chassis unless you know what your doing. Without proper preheating and post heating you will risk getting hairline cracks in the chassis. It is also against the law on trucks and buses unless carried out by professionals and then engineered. It can void your insurance. And in some cases there is a chance a roadworthy could be knocked back
Just a heads up, make sure you use m8 nylock nuts on the step rollers instead of standard nuts which will vibrate loose. Also why not plumb your diesel heater fuel line into the trucks fuel tank so you don't have to have a separate tank that needs filling, and having the risk of diesel going off if it's not being used?
Thanks Wayne that's a good tip! We could have done that yes but Chris wants to ensure both systems are separate (help with troubleshooting or if we want to get rid of it). If we are in summer and don't use the heater we can just not refill the jerrycan.
I think i would radius or round off the sharp corners of the fold out aluminium plate. If you ever had a mishap and fell from the top stair, they sharp corner would open you up nicely . Nice work. Any way to stop the deployable step slide , filling up with grit, etc from road grime? I often see deployable steps on ambulances get stuck from grit in the sliding mechanism
@@heartobefeltI suppose its probably only used during a do or die. Once at camp one can always go for the old bush-mans wipe/technique(hand full of leaves).
Hey Chris, welding to the chassis is NO GOOD. you can weld a bracket, and then bolt it to the chassis. A weld is the weakest part of the joint. Bolt instead. Keep on DOING!!!!!.
Chris, I second Jeff's comment. It is not as risky to weld on the frame's web, but welding or drilling to the flanges (the top and bottom flats) is not good practice.
Chris, you did a great job on fabricating the slide-out stair landing but I'm a bit concerned about what's going to happen off-road. The frame and runners are rigidly welded to the chassis that as you know is designed to "flex" when off-road. I don't see any play in the structure which means it may warp and become stiff to use or worse case break the frame or the welds. The only structure that is designed not to flex is the cab you've built! Also, you're going to need a handle fixed on the right side of the door entrance to give you something to grab onto for safety. The toilet looks good, hope there's enough room and speaking from experience Chris your going to have to assume the "lady" position for peeing (we won't tell anyone), unless you want to clean up the mess and worse getting it into the spoil bin and upsetting the decomposition process. Be careful using disinfectants, detergents etc around the toilet as you don't want it getting in the compost and ruin the bacteria. Also, you can buy a spray bottle from Bunnings that is like an accelerant for the compost. Give it a couple of sprays after use to help. As you seem to be trying to make an air-tight positively pressurised "plenum" in the toilet fixture you want to make sure its sealed for air as well as moisture as you don't want fumes being forced back into your cabin space.
Mate been watching your channel for a while now and the amount of work you two have done is amazing. In regards to the steps (glowstep) I see you ordered from the US, who did you order through or did you order here and it came straight from the US? I need one for our Isizu NPS camper. Cheers

He is correct. A chassis needs to be pre heated then post heated to insure hairline cracks dont developed when welded.

I thought that I had too much to drink when I thought I saw a rooster in your shed 🤔🤔😂😂
It's actually a hen 😆😆
Maybe a flat panel on the wall behind the toilet that folds down on an angle to protect the toilet or some sort of shower curtain which i have used before ? Take Care Guys.
Great watching and nice to see that Chris has found some 'pep in his steps'. Keep up the progress. 👍 Maybe a handle on the side of the door incase you lose your balance on the steps.
Thank you so much Jason for watching! Yes we might install a handle on the inside for when we go down.
Thank you Michael! There isn't enough room unfortunately - Chris will show properly in next episode as a few people have asked the same question.
That was an intense moment when the chicken and the cat came face to face!
Ahah they are actually friends
Still subscribed. Can't get rid of me that easily! 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Legend Peter, thank you so much for the support :)
@@TheOutFit everyone calls me Middo. You're welcome to do the same. 😊
I often see deployable steps on ambulances get stuck from grit in the sliding mechanism
make sure the wee wee tube from the toilet doenst feed into the external shower hose
skate bearings and griptape...... my kind of build!!!
No problem,i still am a subb.
Hi There,
Yes I was unsubscribed but am back again.
Cheers.
Welcome back David! Thanks for checking :)
Wooohooo kicking Goals
Might need a handrail for the steps because Chris not getting any younger. :P
I was so confused when this happend 😂😂
Surely youll need extraction in the dump/shower. Imagine taking a shower right after Chris punches out a big protein log.
Ange doesn't have to imagine.
@@TheOutFit bwahahaha, brutal.
Is it actually for real, crapping in a bucket?
Its a joke right, isnt it?
Come on blokes, SIT TO PEE! it will keep you wife happy and you won't have to clean a smelly floor!
Was that Secret Harbour Bunnings?
And we’re back we more unimog and less scam tricks from turkey 🦃 or India
You would think that with the expensive watches the Australia Post board members got we'd get things in a timely manner ! so to speak
Mate been watching your channel for a while now and the amount of work you two have done is amazing.
In regards to the steps (glowstep) I see you ordered from the US, who did you order through or did you order here and it came straight from the US? I need one for our Isizu NPS camper. Cheers
im still here guys lol
Thank you so much!
Re #2 in the toilet cant you just have it go straight on the road when parking at Aldi then drive off?
Me watching with anxiety watching the cat and the chicken walking towards each other.
Ahah they are actually friends
