A good tank cleaning tip for any black tank. Empty the tank, reinstall or close valves, dump in a bag of ice and a small amount of chemical and finish your drive home. The sliding around of the ice will help remove any accumulated solids and liquify them as the ice melts. Most tank replacements are because of waste turning to concrete. Clean tanks make for good trips.
This was a great video. I had a cassette toilet in one of my previous campers and loved it. I also had a spare cassette I stored in my truck and it was a life savor. I will be installing one in a cargo van conversion I will be starting soon. One silly little tip: I have lived in campers and had to laugh about the skid marks. I almost hate to admit it but I started using car wax in my RV toilets and it really helps in keeping it clean and your stuff washes off easier. The first time I waxed my toilet I knew I have entered a new dimension in RV living. You guys look like you have lots of fun. Thanks again!
I just strategically place enough toilet paper (three squares) to create a landing strip and that solves it for me. A no toilet paper tip: run the water before and during the "pushing", to create a mini water slide for your 💩💩💩
@8:49 ~ I thought you said “poo forethought“, but since I watch all my videos on 2X bead there’s often a little distortion between similar sounding words. So I relisten to it at regular speed and confirmed I did hear it right the first time. Lol.
A little tip for reducing skid marks is to use a little silicon spray on the bowl, this is good for lubricating the blade and stops the sh** from sticking as much, just make sure the bowl is dry before spraying, kind regards
This is true!!!! Silicone lubricant spray is great for plastic, if you put multiple coats the skids will slide off into the abyss like a well seasoned skillet
from daily riding of a commuter train with a dry bowl toilet I learned that if you lay down a thin bed of toilet paper in the bowl you can avoid the brown streaks and it flushes much quicker thus saving water. I do that in our RV toilet.
This video is awesome. I’m a sucker for honesty and you nailed it. I appreciate the open communication regarding bathroom business. With that being said, what I have found to be beneficial when taking a #2 is lay some toilet paper down first. This helps prevent those streak marks. Happy pooping everyone.

As a complete newbie to motorhoming, the toilet is one of the aspects which really concerns me, and so although I know it's never going to be pleasant the fact you guys were so honest and forthright with your tips and advice is so incredibly valuable. I think I must have watched at least 2 hours of RUclips so far about these toliets - but you guys are No.1 in my opinion. All the best on your travels! By the way have you ever tried 'Happy Bowl Liners' ? I found them online and they look like a good idea - but no clue as I've never tried them...( I have no affilation with or interest in them BTW)

@Bruno August i really appreciate your reply. I found the site on google and Im trying it out now. Seems to take a while so I will reply here later with my results.
Great vid! I buy Spic 'n Span disinfecting spray at the Dollar store. Spray the bowl with that before removing your "skid marks." Also, after dumping my cassette, I spray the outside of it and let it air dry to keep it more sanitary.
Looking for a caravan trailer and all seem to have a cassette toilet. And I had no clue what it actually means and how it works. Now I know! And I even know how to avoid the unpleasant mistakes that I would inevitably make.. thank you very much guys!
As to the lack of space for a toilet brush, try the Clorox disposable set up. All of the disposable heads fit in the holder and are covered with a lid. The wand sits in the side of the container, so you could easily leave it sitting in the wet shower or store in your underbelly and use as needed, maybe 1 or 2x per week. We use it in our travel trailer and it makes a huge difference!
From SURPRISE, AZ - Lol, Ben, thanks for the visual of the junk-tuck-n-roll! Had to laugh cause we all know how true it is. And that vent button...I’m still shell-shocked! Thanks for your honest experience, we do appreciate it.
That is a C series Thetford. It does have an electric pump! Second in years of use including full time use, I have never had a skid issue. My plastic toilet bowl is smooth and perfect because it has never been scrubbed with a brush or even toilet paper. Stuff slides right off as it did when new. If you scrub with anything the surface will not remain smooth.
Brutally honest and I appreciate that. We used a cassette toilet in our rented RV when we traveled England and Scotland for 2 weeks. Like you, I am a "full-sized" male and when you gotta go, you gotta go. I found your video to be truthful, so I just had to subscribe!
This is a great video. Thanks for sharing this. This answers a lot of my questions about cassette toilets with an external compartment for a tank. Other RUclipsrs with Cassette toilets always say they only do #1 on their cassette toilets which is ok but when you gotta go #2, you gotta go.
Yes it does! Just bought an Aliner family expedition camper which had a cassette toilet. I’m sure I’ll have a few oh shit moments of my own til I get used to it!
I stay at my parents house a lot in their RV and my Dad rigged up an outside dump station that goes right into the septic tank for me. The only thing I have to worry about is using septic safe chemicals.
We have a cassette toilet in our aliner, it's in a strange place, but, we'll give it a go, we just got the aliner so we'll be out and about this May, can hardly wait. Really glad I came across your video, helped a lot.
Perfect timing for that vid, thanks very much! Wife and I are just now considering the toilet solution for our next build, and those were precisely the questions we had.
His and Hers VLOGS not weird to us at all lol! We’ve tried a number of different toilet solutions along the way, they all have good and bad points of their own, it becomes simply finding the setup that best matches the need. I think in our case this next go around it’ll be a separating compost set-up, but that has a lot to do with the rig and where we’ll be going mostly. Everybody is going to have their own situation to match all of the gear up to. We love your rig!
Great info. I gave up on going #2 in my rv toilet a long time ago. Skids, smells, sensors, and that small hole that everything has to squeeze through was always a problem. Thanks for sharing and Happy Camping
@@outliersoverland how about this.... cut rice paper into 10 inch squares, call it... His and Hers VLOGS Skid Plates ! ( currently skid plates are only made for automotive applications ). How fun would it be to have your arch nemesis printed on the paper with orange stuff :)
Many thanks for posting - I have leaned towards cassette and have access to many off grid forestry pit toilets to dump. This will work very well for my needs. BTW - been following you on IG for a while and only just found you on YT - awesome!
I have found that to avoid the skid marks from going # 2 if you open the tank and drop directly in the tank it avoids the skid and clean up with tp ... it can be a little stinky but it works
Surprisingly we really liked the cassette toilet more than we thought. Spent 3 months traveling Europe in a rental class b. Things are set up so emptying the cassette is really convenient. There are emptying stations at alot of the rest areas along the highways. Most campgrounds have a room near the restroom especially for emptying the cassette.
Some ideas we find useful when doing No 2's. Always open the cassette first so 1's & 2's can go straight down and not sit in the bowl. Stick (with water) some toot paper inside the front of the bowel so No 2's sit on & can more easily be flushed away with less water
Great funny video. The only thing I'd debate is having the fan pull from the rig vs. pull. I've heard that it's easier to evacuate air than force it in.
Thanks for the direct and honest discussion! I'm considering a new Winnebago EKKO which has lots of fresh and grey capacity, but a cassette toilet. Your discussion makes it all seem much more doable and perhaps advantageous compared to the black tank approach.
Good tips! We also like our cassette toilet but it would be nice to have a spare one then we could go 5 to 6 days. Also when we winterize we still can use it with a little water and RV antifreeze. Thanks.
This makes me feel happy about my basic camper (no toilet). Bath houses work just fine (for us) and so does my back up (bag lined bucket with toilet seat). 😊 Thanks for sharing. First informative video I’ve seen on cassette toilets.
I can’t recommend a Sog kit for the thetford cassette toilet enough. Removes the need for chemicals. It vents any fumes from the toilet to the outside with the use of a tiny fan. The extra oxygen aids in breaking down solids.
Hi loved this thank you guys! I’m in the process of purchasing a van to build out. This has helped me do much in deciding this step. Thank you for all your great info, honesty and humor. I just subscribed! See you on the road
Lol...we like ours and there are three of us (daughter is almost 2). Biggest drawback of these is how little they hold. Three days is about right for us. The SOG system out of Europe is an excellent addition for venting and smells.
Thanks for sharing your 'dirty secrets'. We don't have a 'cassette' toilet, but we do deal with it's close relative, the 'porta-potti. We have 2. One, we have in our guest cabin and the other is our bush cabin. The one in our guest cabin, at our stix and brix, has a sign one of our kids made that says "Please don't poop in the potti'. It's for our guests to use at night when going to the outhouse or into our house is not practical. It was much simpler than installing plumbing. The other one we have at our bush cabin where (as Alaskans you will understand) running out to the outhouse at -40C in the middle of the night is to be avoided at all costs! We really appreciate our porta-potti! I'm seriously considering changing out my RVs regular RV toilet for a porta potti. Paying to dump the tank every week or so bugs the heck out of me! TFS!
Awesome Review! Brother, Thank You for letting me know on touching your junk part! You don't have a problem with tea bagging right though? Best Regards and Love the Rig!
this has to be the most down to earth realistic video on this subject, subbed. it makes me laugh how people will sit in a posh cafe or restaurant and stuff their faces with SLAUGHTERED cows, pigs and sheep with burgers but it's hush hush secrets when it comes out the other end 🔥 it helps when you've had a nephrectomy and partial sigmoid colectomy and also if you've raised children and have dogs 🙃 crazy how folks will wipe up anything that comes out of any orifice of a baby or pet but when it comes to the adult toilet it's a serious embarrassment not to be discussed outside of one's house 💥 greets from middle earth
lol get a toilet seat spacer like the kind old people use so they don,t have to travel so far to sit down, that will stop your junk from hitting the bowl. And 2nd after cleaning the inside try waxing or spraying cooking spray inside to prevent cleaning skid marks lol. cant stick if its too slippery.
O sweet thanks, one follow up question is the toilet you have built to work specifically for that cassette tank or is that seal/boot something you can add to other toliets that works for this tank?
How much orange stuff do you add per tank? I have that same stuff but it doesn’t give good instructions for a cassette. It’s more geared towards large RV tanks.
Thanks for watching. We never measure, but do not put in very much, just a couple tablespoons. The orange stuff is meant to treat a large tank for longer periods of time. The cassette is small and get emptied often.
Helpful tip: use a plastic stick to (remotely) move and wipe the toilet paper 🧻 to clean skid marks off the bowl - we made one from a thick plastic coat hanger, cut off the bottom. Works well and easy to clean and reuse.
Consider installing a composting toilet. Ours is in operation since 2 years. No electricity, no water, no bad smells, no annoying dumping process. Disposing the waste is so easy, it´s pure nature. Life can be so easy ;-). Safe travels. Cheers
Considering the dosage on the bottle is for a regular grey tank we use only about 1-2 tablespoons (just s splash), especially since the cassette gets dumped every 2-4 days. Hope this helps.
Good question. Let’s say the contents are in the neighborhood of 8 lbs a gallon (poop may weigh more, lol) and the cassette holds about 4 gallons. The cassette itself is very light, maybe 3 pounds. * The newer ones have wheels. One thought is if 35 lbs is too much the cassette could be dumped before it is completely full... Hope this helps. Ben
We have the Thetford T4, it’s older and parts are not even available in the states. I’d highly recommend looking at the newer Thetfords. I have to get parts for ours from the UK.
Seriously excellent review an d tips. Every toilet solution has it's problems. The biggest I've heard of from women is the weight of the things when full. They can weigh as much as 50lbs which is a lot when you have it at chest height!
i have read about spraying wd40 in a home toilet to create a slicker surface, which avoids skid marks.... i wonder if that or using car wax on the bowl would help.......
Okay, this is isn't glamorous stuff but extremely honest and helpful! Videos that gloss over the "bad stuff" are about as helpful as the "natural family planning" classes we had to take from the Catholic priest. Theory just doesn't cut it, we need all the gritty details from someone who's walked the walk lol. Thanks for this great video. Extremely helpful!

We are going to try the car wax trick.
Try applying a superhydrophobic ceramic coat. It should last years, if it bonds with the material.
perhaps simply non stick baking spray or silicone mould release would do the trick without needing to get stuck in with wax and a cloth...

TFS!
You’re very welcome. In Alaska they are called Honey Buckets.
Awesome Review! Brother, Thank You for letting me know on touching your junk part! You don't have a problem with tea bagging right though? Best Regards and Love the Rig!
Happy to help. Glad you liked the crappy video.
this has to be the most down to earth realistic video on this subject, subbed. it makes me laugh how people will sit in a posh cafe or restaurant and stuff their faces with SLAUGHTERED cows, pigs and sheep with burgers but it's hush hush secrets when it comes out the other end 🔥 it helps when you've had a nephrectomy and partial sigmoid colectomy and also if you've raised children and have dogs 🙃 crazy how folks will wipe up anything that comes out of any orifice of a baby or pet but when it comes to the adult toilet it's a serious embarrassment not to be discussed outside of one's house 💥 greets from middle earth
Love the honesty
Use dish soap/water 10/90 in a spraybottle and spray toilet before number 2. It is much easier to clean skidmarks then.
There are definitely a few ways to mitigate skid marks.
Thanks for watching.
lol get a toilet seat spacer like the kind old people use so they don,t have to travel so far to sit down, that will stop your junk from hitting the bowl. And 2nd after cleaning the inside try waxing or spraying cooking spray inside to prevent cleaning skid marks lol. cant stick if its too slippery.
Too funny. We actually tried the booster seat. It worked but all the junk was still crammed down that hole.
The cooking spray idea is worth trying.
Great video. One question. Do you put the orange stuff in the bottom of the tank as well as the flush?
Thank you. We add the orange stuff after dumping and a quick rinse.
Touch the yellow button in the cassette really make me laughed...technical glitch for newbie hihi....
How does the toliet connect to the cassette tank? Like do you have to screw it in or does it just connect in palce?
Thanks for watching.
There is actually a seal/boot and it fits into place well. The trick is to keep the area clean and it won’t leak.
O sweet thanks, one follow up question is the toilet you have built to work specifically for that cassette tank or is that seal/boot something you can add to other toliets that works for this tank?
You're welcome. The cassette and related parts are very specific to the toilet.
Oh ok gotcha! Thanks for the responses I appreciate it
How much orange stuff do you add per tank? I have that same stuff but it doesn’t give good instructions for a cassette. It’s more geared towards large RV tanks.
Thanks for watching. We never measure, but do not put in very much, just a couple tablespoons. The orange stuff is meant to treat a large tank for longer periods of time. The cassette is small and get emptied often.
Pre spray butter or olive spray for those skid marks. less marks then.
Very useful video. Thanks!
You’re welcome. Glad it helped.
Helpful tip: use a plastic stick to (remotely) move and wipe the toilet paper 🧻 to clean skid marks off the bowl - we made one from a thick plastic coat hanger, cut off the bottom. Works well and easy to clean and reuse.
this was great!
Thanks!
Consider installing a composting toilet. Ours is in operation since 2 years. No electricity, no water, no bad smells, no annoying dumping process. Disposing the waste is so easy, it´s pure nature. Life can be so easy ;-). Safe travels. Cheers
It’s a gamble we are not willing to take in a wet bath. In a future rig a dry bath and composting toilet would be ideal.
That's why l keep water pressure on. The shower head cleans that cassette toilet perfectly.....
It also fills it up quicker…. There’s tons of compromises.
Thanks for watching.
How much of that orange stuff do you have to use each time and how often?
Considering the dosage on the bottle is for a regular grey tank we use only about 1-2 tablespoons (just s splash), especially since the cassette gets dumped every 2-4 days.
Hope this helps.
@@outliersoverland yes. so you like cassette better than a grey water toilet?
100% better than a traditional RV black tank. Especially when we don’t always frequent places that have RV amenities.
Thanks! 👍
Question: is the orange stuff used as a rinse, or does it stay in the cassette until the cassette is dumped? Thank you.
We do not rinse with the orange stuff.
How heavy is the cassette when you go to dump it? Could a senior lady solo rver manage it easily?
Good question. Let’s say the contents are in the neighborhood of 8 lbs a gallon (poop may weigh more, lol) and the cassette holds about 4 gallons.
The cassette itself is very light, maybe 3 pounds. * The newer ones have wheels.
One thought is if 35 lbs is too much the cassette could be dumped before it is completely full...
Hope this helps.
Ben
@@outliersoverland if it floats it weighs less than water
Use some toilet liners like happy days liners. Like no2 into a coffee filter , thats if you can find them
can you put lavatory blue juice to break down the poop and toilet paper. or once the cassette is dump put it in dry. and only use water to flush?
Brilliant Video guys. Really Really good
Thanks. Glad you liked it.
I’ve been on the net trying to find a site where you can order a cassette toilet Nada.
Nothing on Thetfords site????
The style in the video.
The down and dirty!!! Thank you ;-)
I remember that vent pooping at her by accident, Wink wink. I learned a lot on this one. What make and model it the toilet you have?
Thanks for watching. We have the Thetford T4.
i have read about spraying wd40 in a home toilet to create a slicker surface, which avoids skid marks.... i wonder if that or using car wax on the bowl would help.......
We have started lining the bowl with a few sheets of toilet paper.
@@outliersoverland but you are creating unnecessary waste
Ya, but you really want your junk smelling like wd40? Lol.
@@outliersoverland ok. Get out the turtle wax.
Do you add any chemicals that break down the solids?
We add an orange solution that we find at Walmart.
real. appreciated.
Very informative do not hit that vent button till you are dumping.🤣😂❤
