As someone that comes from the fishkeeping world, I am always amazed by the fact there aren't more people trying to create a more natural environment for hamsters and mouses. I would love to seem something kind of aquascaping but for hamsters haha

Just for the info I am a woman lol, everyone assumes I must be a dude because women usually don’t get into the fish keeping hobby 🤣 but to answer your question, yes just like the other commenter said, it is perfectly safe to use sand! I buy my sand from a pet store from the reptile section as that way I know it is safe for my pet. I do not recommend getting sand from outside because you never know what’s in the sand and it could make your hamster sick. I also get some frog moss for my hamster from the reptile section as well. Good luck!

I feel so so bad for the hamster a friend of mine had when she was young. just a tiny bit of bedding in a very small cage "so i can clean it up easier" with one little hide and a running wheel too small for its little back. im torn, kids should be more educated and parents more involved. life is so much responsibility... and precious.

You know what I'm actually surprised how easy it is to clean big cages! Bin cages to be specific. All those tiny wire cages with multiple levels are so annoying and sometimes nearly impossible to put back together after cleaning.... it just takes a lot more bedding. But that means it'll take a long time for it to actually get dirty. I wish past me knew this so my past hamsters don't have to suffer. I don't have a time machine to change the past tho so imma just spoil the hamsters I have now. Their cages are at least above germanys standard

I owned birds for a few years called java finches i tried to buy them a big cage but i just didnt feel like a cage was big enough and i really wanted to create a large indoor aviary but im not in good position to get such an environment set up so i gave the birds to a lady who keeps other birds and takes really good care of them. I had lots of fun and tried to make them as happy as i could but next time i wont buy a bird or pet unless i have a lot of space to give them
This is amazing! You did the right thing. Rehoming animals is so difficult and often needlessly stigmatized - the people who do it for the sake of the animal are awesome :) they definitely appreciated the time they had with you as well!!

Cotton's dumb because humana have kinda made hamsters broken. They don't live long, and with them being used as pets for a better half of the century, over hundreds of generations, their natural survival instincts were long since bred out of them. Cotton has no fucking clue what to do that's why he appears as a dummy. This is still a better enclosure than a cage tho, the naturalist environment is a lot more stimulating than ceaselessly running his ass off on a wheel. And while Cotton would not be able to survive in the wild, here he's the Apex Predator and if he ever fails to find good - it gets handed to him.
what is in cottons burrow ..did you give her bedding or did cotton make her own burrow and put in items found around the enclosure ? thanks ...i'm just curious .

Hamsters and kids naturally just doesn't match.... I mean a kids nature is full of energy, roughhousing and sleeping early and a hamster can handle none of those
Feeding hamster is guiding them to where the food is while using our hand as bait. you will get biten if you have slow reaction. Recently i found a trick to guide them to their food, i blow wind at the hamster from the food's direction.
I had a hamster and he was white too Every time he wanted to sleep, he rushed to his house like a flash lol He wasn't that interested in exploring our of cage but he loved to play with people

the fact that you putted life mealworms in the cage is so good, your hamster can now find there own food the way they do it in the wild
Depending on the worms they can pack a mean bite you do need to be sure it is a kind the hamster would be able to defend against

I’m a fish keeper and a hamster keeper, I have full aquascapes and nature scenes for my Hammies so I get both the underwater and above ground fun! 😄

@Hugo Cordova Sand is completely safe as long as it’s not dusty, in fact you are supposed to have a sand bath in your enclosure.

햄스터 평균수명 2년얘기듣고 처음에 충격많이 받았는데 이런환경이라면 일반적인 플라스틱 사육장보다 더 재미있게 살 수 있을것같네요 오래오래 살기를
