I see nothing but benefits in keeping dwarf hamster species in this manner, but because it is a closed system as with any natural biotope it does have to have some maintenance requiring some knowledge, research and experience. So while this is most likely the best way to keep a dwarf species of hamster especially in reducing its overall anxiety and therefore increase its friendliness with humans, this kind of setup cannot simply be set up and left alone requiring some intervention and observation that of which you are quite good at executing as evidenced by how healthy Cotton is. I wouldn't recommend this for the beginner but certainly for anyone willing to put in the time and effort to learn as well as perform the necessary maintenance. That said I think this is one of the best examples of how to properly keep a critter healthy and happy in captivity. Cotton must be the happiest hamster on RUclips in this incredibly well done and maintained setup. I'd love to see an attempt at keeping a colony of the more social species of dwarf hamsters and I can't remember its name I'd have to look it up again because in a more sterile artificial environment you still witness some of the fighting and cannibalism that you wouldn't necessarily see in the wild even in that species. It requires a large naturalistic enclosure to be successful especially when they're not siblings.... also I'd love to see long-term statistics concerning the longevity of these critters living in this setup and I guarantee that it would be longer than both the regular more traditional sterile captive setups and certainly longer than in the actual wild. And one last thing I was curious if you ever tried keeping isopods in there as well and excuse my laziness for not looking this up myself but wondered if they were safe for the hamster to eat or if they would even eat them. I asked this question cause I think they'd be great in breaking down hamster waste. Also some of them are pretty cool looking. I love the fact that critter keeping is moving toward more bio active setups. Once these systems are well matured and maintained especially during the initial stages, in almost every case you have healthier happier and longer lived critters as well as less maintenance overall... Amazing 😭💕 But I wonder, how does the hamster deal with the humidity? I thought they need dry climates? I would love to recreate this in my home one day. Your video updates always bring joy 🥰
Please don’t, it’s not good as like you said it shouldn’t be humid and moist. The hamster may get to cold and die or suffer, just use normal bedding (which they can burrow in just fine as long as it’s deep) and make a big inclosure. This person is not an expert, and it’s kinda sad that so many people are praising them for putting there hamster in a cold moist inclosure, also they may get soaked going into the aquarium which can damage their coat.
@@simplygrace8393 Winter white hamsters are native to Kazakhstan, Mongolia, and Siberia. I don't the hamster will die of cold. Soils also naturally retain moisture; do you think the hamster is burrowing in aspen fiber in the wild? I think it is best to ask the hamster if they are healthy, and he seems to be active, alert, and calm.
Hamsters burrow, so they are exposed to humidity in the wild, since soils naturally retain moisture. In fact, hamsters are nocturnal so they would be spending their days underground to avoid predators. That's a lot of time in humid environments. Winter whites are more active in the day than most species, but the point still stands.
@@snekysneks @Jessica U will always find people like him complaining like they are hamster whisperer or something. The fact that the hamster is active and alive after 1 year just prove them wrong.. if the situation is not good for them they certainly will not survive 1 year in that environment.
I once bought 3 mice at a pet store. They were the size of a quarter, within a week they doubled in size and began fighting. Through the help of internet I was told I must separate the mice, so I did, I got two other aquariums. HOWEVER, I found that mice smell very bad and I was "seriously" having respiratory issues. I love animals, and it was my responsibility for the mices welfare, but I couldn't breathe having them inside my house. So I created a "natural habitat" for the mice, I put 2/3 level of sterilized dirt in each of the 3 aquariums. I put grass seeds in the dirt which grew inside their cages. Each had a home, food dish, water and toys. Each could see each other through the glass and smell each other in their lookout towers. I relocated my 3 mice (in their separate aquariums) on my second-story balcony. I bought $800 worth of small trees and shrubbery that I placed around their aquariums on the balcony for natural shade (I live in Florida so the temperature was warm). My mice lived 3 years!!
@@typicallyusual6984 kind of hard to explain but the best way i can put itnis just do some research. Their are certain conditions that can improve the structural stability of the ground for tunneling and its fairly complicated to look at but not that hard to implement
You could use an external cheap canister filter, a 40$ one has enough flow and is small and you have only 2 tubes going in terrarium. I use one in my turtle terrarium for cleaning up the water and i can create and control a small water flow to oxygenate the water and is also hidden under terrarium in the stand. is also not so loud and has UV sterilization and is way more efficient then any other pump and runs for months before it needs cleaning.

That hamster is living so nice compared to other pet hamsters. Imagine an even bigger terrarium for him! xD
He died.
NO dont say that y-y@@hatecontent
Beautiful Hamster
@gusloth what the-💀 hamster is not human food💀💀💀
This is awesome, I have bioactive enclosures for my frogs, toads, chameleons and few of my inverts, and they’re always fun to watch the progress of. Never thought of this and might consider picking up a Hamster myself.
Whoooooa. I've never seen springtails feast like this before. What an extremely healthy environment.
It's very sad that much like fish, hamsters are treated not like animals with needs but toys. This makes me incredibly happy to see. You take very good care of your pets
when he gets covered in all the dirt he looks like an oreo mcflurry 😭💕

Had few hamsters myself as kid. Never have I thought of making something like this for a hamster. Metal cages were what all friends used to keep them in. Thanks! I'll make sure my kids would have one of these.
Wow,this hamster has an amazing set up!! Doesn't have to worry about predators, natural as urrounding and food. ❤
was expecting just hamster stuff. but I am instead blown away by the surprise time-lapse footage of poop turning into fertilizer!! 😮. amazing stuff. You & KumaQQ are the best hamster channels 👍👍
This is the best and cutest video ever. I’m so happy for cotton. He deserves the best as well as his owner
This is the most work I ever see anyone putting into work for a hamster cage
Probably One of the few hamsters that won't commit die in a spectacular way
My late mom would have loved this. We treated my hamster like gold. I miss him.
I love the little hamster butt. Especially when the hamster digs. So cute.
I'm watching this at 3am 🤣 I love videos like this. This little hamster has the most incredible natural enclosure I've ever seen
I nearly cannot express how happy i am for this hamster ❤
This is amazing!! Who would have thought that they could live in the wild like this!!
Wow. Your terrium realy came along! Love all the new things you''re trying! Great job.
Nice to see such a beautiful enclosure for a dwarf hamster, very rare to see, they usually get put in small plastic boxes with some bedding and a wheel,
its really cool you take this to a whole other level. i like seeing how people are meticulous & detailed @ caring for things, how id like to do it but more ambitious than i.
very much enjoy your coice of music for some of these. some nice relaxing hamster footage ahhhh
The editing feels like having a fever dream

Also learned that hamsters were omnivorous? Lol thought they were herbivores

I didn’t even know I need med to watch that 😀 it was a random suggestion.
This is truly my dream paludarium 😭 A bioactive setup home to a hamster with naturally growing plants, a variety of hardscape, and a planted aquarium stocked with fish?? Amazing 😭💕
But I wonder, how does the hamster deal with the humidity?
@@snekysneks yes, but i doubt that the cage stays without the lid. The hamster would escape in a heartbeat. Also, some hamsters live in the desert.
@@snekysneks @Jessica U will always find people like him complaining like they are hamster whisperer or something. The fact that the hamster is active and alive after 1 year just prove them wrong.. if the situation is not good for them they certainly will not survive 1 year in that environment.
That's an awesome idea he has to be the happiest healthiest little hamster just living life.
Wow I can tell that you really love Cotton! It’s so pleasant and wholesome to watch you work on Cotton’s home :) and ofc Cotton is the cutest!
Definitely recommend a slightly better tunnel-holding substrate but other than that…looks so freaking amazing!
What would be a better tunneling substrate? Out of curiosity if I decide to attempt this one day.
@@typicallyusual6984 kind of hard to explain but the best way i can put itnis just do some research.
Their are certain conditions that can improve the structural stability of the ground for tunneling and its fairly complicated to look at but not that hard to implement
I’m impressed by how your hamster stays so clean
Good work! I wonder, do you add some artificial rain from time to time and does the soil not drying too much to collapse on the hamster?
You could use an external cheap canister filter, a 40$ one has enough flow and is small and you have only 2 tubes going in terrarium. I use one in my turtle terrarium for cleaning up the water and i can create and control a small water flow to oxygenate the water and is also hidden under terrarium in the stand. is also not so loud and has UV sterilization and is way more efficient then any other pump and runs for months before it needs cleaning.
