This dude changed my life. I broke my back climbing in 1995. I didn't work out again until this year. I saw his climbs, got off my ass and have not only climbed up 150 feet, but climbed down the same. Just inspiring. Thank you Alex, Vivian, and Johnny. Joined my local climbing gym and have already lost 13 pounds in 8 weeks too!
Squiggy Wigginz bro good job man! I have played extreme sports for over 20 years and broken so many damn bones. My knees are the worst and have very bad TBI. Anyways last year I could barley walk 3 blocks down the road and at that time I haven’t played sports for a few years because of how much pain I was in. Then I moved to South Dakota and my fiancé’s showed me climbing and I been addicted ever since. I kept having flash backs of my 20Ft + high falls and was like no way I’ll ever be able to climb. Well I can tell you this my fear of heights is defiantly gone lol and I can now do pistol squats on each leg. Mind you it hurts like hell, but climbing is the most freeing thing I have ever done. Hope your back feels better man, I have 5 bulged disc and multiple pinched nerves. I can’t feel my right side my neck anymore blah lol. Oh well need that adrenaline !

Whether they're ex-lovers or just platonic friends, Hazel and Alex have shared-in and been on some pretty deep excursions together: Eurkea Wall, the NAT GEO thing where they went to some fjord off the coast of Africa, and this. If anything, they have a deep bond in friendship revolving around this art-form called climbing which in many ways could lead into a kind of deep-seated lovey-dovey relationship down the line as the cumulative emotions and memories would be too great to ignore.
Climbing relationships can go really deep. The trust level is intense, you see each other at your best and your worst, and it can take years to find the right person and longer to merge your skills into a strong partnership. I've climbed with partners male and female, and the connection is the same. Sometimes it turns into more than that, but really, it doesn't *need* to. Hi Robert, do excuse the late reply, must've slipped through the cracks, thanks for the thoughtful and insightful reply! That is a very interesting on what you described as the levels of intensity that can develop in climbing partnerships.I'm not a climber, though it doesn't take much for the imagination to simulate an idea of what it might be like when you've got 4K/ HD video coverage shadowing these incredible athletes as they demonstrate such prolific feats of human endurance and precision. I can only assume that the closest similar type of partnership in comparison, would be soldiers, like in war, soldier's are presented with life and death situations that when survived in a mission, it bonds them for life. With something like climbing or even free-climbing where it's voluntary, considered a sporting activity, every step, every hook point, you're presented with something that could be life threatening, where your partner may be the only option to bail you out. That's intense! So I totally get where you're coming from when there is an agreed upon act of omitting sex, as it could interfere with the constant balance in your state of mind (even off the mountain) and thus, maintaining an equilirbrium of your consciousness in order to keep consistent and on top of your game.
Thanks Luke, I would have to wholly agree with you. They make great ambassadors for the sport. I'm guessing, Black diamond is about as high as you can go in ranking! Pun intended.

Doubtful. Just a platonic relationship built out of trusting their lives to each other. I have the same thing with my regular climbing partner. I could never date her due to ideological differences (shes dating another guy that we climb with regularly) but we get on rock and things just click with us. We know when to push each other and we know when to back off and let the other regain their headspace or just when to just lower the other to the ground. We know each other's idiosyncrasies with climbing too. I think it has something to do with the fact that I was her first trad lead belay and she was mine (both about 6 months apart, with me being the latter).
Alex is Always climbing with Hazel..... They must've had to share one sleeping bag on some distant climbing expedition when they both were pups, and now they can never forget that closeness..... Yea, that must be it. #California
A bit strange seeing Alex climbing with ropes. But guess Slate is one of the harder rocks formations to climb. Both climbers are awesome but Alex is a class of his own..Johnny is a good climber too..but defo not in the same class as Hazel and Alex.
I think when Johnny was on form he was a better climber than both - www.planetmountain.com/en/news/climbing/johnny-dawes-slate-masterpiece-repeated-after-28-years.html
You're totally right, even in Free Solo, you can see people constantly letting go of the break hand, what the fuck is up with that? The arrogant assumption that 'oh, my climbing partner won't fall, it's fine'?
Ummm -- Alex is using a Petzl GriGri, an automatic braking device which permits you to let go of the brake hand. It was developed for aid and sport climbers, who have to spend hours upon hours with their partners locked off; some trad climbers use it too, for the added safety. Heavy and complicated for my tastes, and they can be fussy about rope diameter & condition, but Alex is belaying fine.
Actually you should still not let go of the brake hand. It's assisted braking, not automatic. Even the new Gri Gri + requires a hand on the brake side of the device.
When one of the best climbers in the world is belaying you personally, then you get to criticize his technique. Until then... I guess try to understand that there are compromises to be made and they're at the top of their game and understand these issues better than most. Hazel has said she will skip clipping if she's pumped, just to save the extra energy. He's using a gri gri, so there's a lower risk of losing control of the rope. Perhaps there's an understanding between them that she'd rather he was able to pay rope out faster to facilitate a faster clip, than to use the textbook technique and she falls hanging around for enough rope and wasting energy.

No.
Who is Bear Grylls?
been there done that got the promotion
switch on the subtitles though.....boy he mumbles
Alex is Always climbing with Hazel..... They must've had to share one sleeping bag on some distant climbing expedition when they both were pups, and now they can never forget that closeness..... Yea, that must be it. #California
She's really cute!!!!
wait has alex got a rope here??
A bit strange seeing Alex climbing with ropes. But guess Slate is one of the harder rocks formations to climb. Both climbers are awesome but Alex is a class of his own..Johnny is a good climber too..but defo not in the same class as Hazel and Alex.
I think when Johnny was on form he was a better climber than both - www.planetmountain.com/en/news/climbing/johnny-dawes-slate-masterpiece-repeated-after-28-years.html
Shhhh I’m gonna say it...I think he’s smitten!
"Probably better at climbing than Bear Grylls even"
I Still going through from bikini bottom
Bear Grylls is nothing compared to Alex when climbing
He was joking haha
Whoosh
The smallest mountain ever he thinks 😅
Great climbers, all terrible belayer’s
You're totally right, even in Free Solo, you can see people constantly letting go of the break hand, what the fuck is up with that? The arrogant assumption that 'oh, my climbing partner won't fall, it's fine'?
Nobody watching this with their common sense switched on... look at Alex's belay hand at 1:48-1:50. Too cool to give a safe belay?
Ummm -- Alex is using a Petzl GriGri, an automatic braking device which permits you to let go of the brake hand. It was developed for aid and sport climbers, who have to spend hours upon hours with their partners locked off; some trad climbers use it too, for the added safety. Heavy and complicated for my tastes, and they can be fussy about rope diameter & condition, but Alex is belaying fine.
Actually you should still not let go of the brake hand. It's assisted braking, not automatic. Even the new Gri Gri + requires a hand on the brake side of the device.
they tell you that for liability reasons buuut....
At no point was he unable to brake with the rope. You're being overly critical.
SHE IS SUPER CUTE, VERY PRETTY FACE
PLS SHOW BOB AND VEGANA
He sounds like a patronising snob to me
