I've recently bought an FF bundle including L2 and this video is so informed. This has absolutely given me a massive understanding of how to use this plugin. Great work, thank you
Absolutely brilliant tutorial. Thanks a lot! Must watch for every Pro-L 2 owner, but if you don't have it yet, once you watch this video, chances are you will head over to order it anyway.
I really don't understand the difference between limiting to 0db and to -14 LUFS. If I reduce the gain of my track to -14 LUFS, my end product ends up around -6db, which is obviously not loud enough... In all the professional wav songs I've downloaded on Beatport, they are all brickwall limited to 0 db. I even put a wav song into my DAW and it was perfectly 0db, but -8.0 LUFS... I don't understand :(
You're comparing two different things. While Db stands for the signal itself, LUFS are a way to measure loudness. And you're ears do not listen to everything in the same way. Take this example (never done this, but it might work, and I think gets the message across). Take two sine waves, one at 50 Hz and another at 3kHz. Normalize them both (which means they will be at the same dB level). Then run a meter that can measure LUFS, and you'll see for yourself that the 50Hz sine will have a lower LUFS count than the 3k, while both having the same dB count. And if you listen to them (watch out for the volume), you'll see that you perceive the 3k sine much louder than the 50Hz. This is a very simple example to explain the difference, but this could be debated for hours. And then when you mix compression to get rid of wave peaks that you don't really hear, and you can actually get the sound to be louder without peaking, than you're in another level. There is a lot going on today, but hopefully this cleared up your mind at least a little bit.
@@andremigcasol It did! Thank you! Since I wrote this, I've learned that the peak of the attack of a sound, doesn't say anything about the loudness of the body of the actual sound. And indeed with compression you may end up reducing the peak by 6dB and keeping the perceived loudness relatively the same :) Thanks again for your detailed answer!
Hi there, Excellent video in an easy and understandable way on how to use the Pro L-2. I have one question tho. Do I have to keep enabling the Unity gain when using the plugin? I get a bit confused about whether I need to keep it active all the time or just need to be enabled to get an indication of when and how much limiting is going on. Thanks, Chris
Hi. Great content thank you. I have a novice question that someone may be able to Help with. I just bought pro l 2 for my first mastering project and I really like the sound when the limiter digs in by around 3db. The trouble is that this gives me an LUFS of around -6-7. I’m aiming for -14. What is the proper/best way to get -14 LUFS but while still keeping the pleasant ‘gluey’ sound of 3db limiting? Thank you.
Hey there Norman, sou you are saying that your loudness isn’t loud enough when you are limiting? I have my tracks pushed to -3DB on my ozone compressor to obtain high db volume without clipping. Once I’m done equing, maximizing, and making sure my track is shaped to where it sounds good, I will then use Pro L2. When I limit I only need to push my gain to +3 or +4 db.to start limiting my peaks. My Lufs are pretty close to -14lufs. Also you can adjust the output level on the bottom right to - whatever you need to dial the total loudness in together if your audio is already to loud.
I have seen Pro l2 used on single channels, but you have to really know what you're doing or you're going to end up with a big mess. Its like any other dynamics processor, they all have their uses for specific situations. if you just want your guitar to be louder, don't apply the limiter. Do subtractive gain on the rest of your tracks to bring it up. Limiters have a compounding effect on the overall flavor and you won't hear the mistake until you get closer to the end. But yes you can use it on a single track, but always ask yourself why, and is there a cleaner way to do it. always leave yourself room for the mastering, otherwise you will spend all your mastering time trying to fix mistakes you made while mixing.. and overuse / misuse of dynamic plug ins is usually the key suspect.
@@PluginBoutiqueOfficial i normally export as wav in ableton then convert to mp3 in itunes to use in serato. So wld 16bit or 32bit be better for that for highest quality?
Also, if everything in Ableton is a 32bit file, then why did you change your dither settings and render bit depth to 16? I don't understand the point of why you did that.
Nothing can describe the greatness of this tuturial.
Its big luck that I got it!
Thanks - JC
Thanks! I appreciate you saying so!
I'm new to mastering, and this tutorial has really improved my skills in a meaningful way. This video is very well made. Thank you!

yo, same
because everyone is mastering in -7 LUFS and they don't care

wow thank you for a superb video!
you kept your true peak limiter on even though you brought your level back to lufs14, is there a reason why you left it on?
THANK YOU!

How is the transparent option? Does it driver true transparency?
great vid :)
Ummm may I ask if this plugin is only the best for mastering thing? Not for single track limiting?
It's usually found on the master channel at the final stage of the chain... I think you are looking for a compressor? - JC

Love the track can you tell me what it call please?
Why do you choose 16bits? Wouldn't 24bit or 32bit be better quality?
Most digital music distributors require a 16 bit waveform. For archives and backups, bigger is better. - JC

What should my dithering bit depth in Pro L 2 and my export bit depth be in FL Studio?

hahah too sNice tutorialt
Heyaa! Any link for the music? :)
Nope. Sorry. Just a track I through together that went no where. - JC

what song is this lol????
Just some random project I had at the time of making the tutorial
