Sylvester Stallone himself has said that Rocky is not a boxing movie, it's a love story with boxing in it.
Stallone still has the turtles Cuff and Link. Butkus was Stallone's real dog. Before he got his movie deal, he was so poor he sold Butkus for about $25 so he could get some food, after he got the movie deal, he bought Butkus back from the family that bought him for over $15,000.
BTW, Rocky II starts right where Rocky ends.

The film came out during 1976, the Bicentennial Anniversary of the Declaration of Independence from Great Britain.. it was a BIG deal at the time, at least in my memory. Hence all of the patriotic/George Washington stuff that you see throughout the film.

Apollo Creed won by Split Decision. There are 3 judges. A Split Decision meant that 2 out of 3 judges chose Apollo as the winner. 1 judge chose Rocky. It was a very close fight.
A Unanimous Decision is when all 3 judges choose 1 fighter as the winner.

    • @richardrobbins387

I believe when the movie was made, Stallone was so broke he couldn't afford Butkus. (Living conditions and whatnot, he could barely feed and house himself)
But he was later able to afford the dog once the film made some money.
The turtles, as far as I know, were his and are still currently alive.

When Apollo drops Rocky, and he puts his hands up, finally sure of his victory. Just to turn around and see Rocky claw and climb his way back up to his feet to keep fighting. The look of defeat and the head shake as to say, "What is this man made of?" That's what the Rocky series is all about. That's why it resonates so much with people. It's the story of perseverance in the face of overwhelming odds and finding love.

You could win a fight by a knockout or a unanimous decision which means all three ringside judges voted for you or by a split decision which means two of the three voted for you, which is how Apollo won. Great job Aria. See ya for Rocky II, (My personal favorite.)

    • @Valecan
      @Valecan 8 месяцев назад +1

To add to your comment for those curious. You can also win by a technical knockout which is basically the ref calling the fight when one fighter can no longer protect themselves; the ref stops it to prevent more serious injury or death. And a split decision is the tally of each round's score from the three judges at the end of a fight. Basically each round is scored by the judges on who they thought won the round. In this movie, Rocky losing to a 2-1 split decision is still a feat considering he was against the champ. The number of max rounds depends on the weight class of the boxers and the agreed upon limit. You don't see 15 max rounds anymore, but 3 max or 9 max rounds are common. Looking forward to Aria watch the 2nd one as well.

"You're gonna eat lightnin' and you're gonna crap thunder!"
Fun Fact: Theatrical movie debut of Michael Dorn, best known for playing Worf in the Star Trek franchise.
Art Imitates Life Fact: Sylvester Stallone was inspired to write the screenplay after seeing the Chuck Wepner-Muhammad Ali fight on March 24, 1975, at the Richfield Coliseum in Richfield, Ohio, near Cleveland. The details of that fight is beyond the scope of this comment, but the Creed-Balboa fight parallels that fight in many ways.
Making Lemonade Fact: In the film, the poster above the ring before Rocky fights Apollo (Carl Weathers) shows Rocky wearing red shorts with a white stripe when he actually wears white shorts with a red stripe. This was an actual mistake made by the props department that they could not afford to rectify, so Sylvester Stallone came up with the idea for the scene where Rocky points out the mistake himself. The comment about Rocky's robe being too baggy came about the same way - the robe delivered to the set was far too baggy for Stallone, so rather than hope people wouldn't notice, the character himself simply points it out.
Guerrilla Filmmaking Fact: Most of the scenes of Rocky jogging through Philadelphia were shot with no permits, no equipment, and no extras. The shot where he runs past the moored boat for example, the crew were simply driving by the docks, and John G. Avildsen saw the boat, and thought it would make a good visual, so he had Sylvester Stallone simply get out of the van and run along the quays, while Avildsen himself filmed from the side door. A similar story concerns the famous shot of Rocky jogging through the food market. As he runs, the stall keepers and the people on the sidewalks can clearly be seen looking at him in bemusement. While this works in the context of the film to suggest they're looking at Rocky, in reality, they had no idea why this man was running up and down the road being filmed from a van. During this scene, the famous shot where the stall owner throws Rocky an orange was completely improvised by the stall owner, who had no idea that a movie was being filmed and that he would be in it.

They are. Excellent source of protein and fat. The cholesterol is good for hormone production and brain health. The membrane between the egg and the shell is collagen. The egg shell is great calcium you can grind up into a powder to mix into shakes or simply use as a tooth powder to brush your teeth with. They used to be used on burn patients because they provided so many nutrients that helped them heal.
Legendary trainer, Vince Gironda, used to have his athletes eat 12-36 eggs a day during training. Arnold Schwarzenegger followed this in his early pro bodybuilding days before roids became easily accessible and he took to the needle.

Any risk people are worried about with eggs is directly the result of supermarkets over-sanitizing them resulting in potential bad things growing while the good things have been sanitized off. Even then that is over hyped because they want you eat heavily processed foods filled with preservatives. I've eaten a dozen raw eggs almost daily for years and have never gotten sick. I've done this with supermarket eggs and farm fresh eggs directly from a local farmer, while I prefer the farm fresh eggs since they are more nutrient dense, I've never had any issue either way.

"Rocky" is so inspiring...and not just the movie but also the making of the movie itself. Stallone was a relative unknown and yet he was able to get this movie made that he wrote himself and that he insisted on starring in even though studios wanted to hire someone more well known. The little underdog movie was the highest grossing film of 1976 and received ten Oscar nominations and won three including Best Picture.
I saw in an interview with Matt Damon that when he and Ben Affleck were trying to get "Good Will Hunting" made (a film that they, as unknowns, wrote together and wanted to star in together) they had Stallone and Rocky as inspirations. (And that movie went on to receive nine Oscar nominations.)

Boxing matches are graded by judges who award points each round. If a fighter does not win by a knock out, the winner is chosen by the judges based on the scores they have given. As split decision means that the judgement of the judges was not unanimous and that a majority chose the winner.

"Go the distance" means to last the entire fight. Which at this time for a heavyweight championship was 15 3min rounds. Rocky went the distance with Apollo, which no other fighter had done.
"Split decision" 3 judges scoring the fight based on variables like punches thrown, punches landed, how hard punches landed were and knock-downs to name a few. If a fight goes all the rounds the winner is decided by the judge's scorecards. Split decision means 2 judges score one fighter the winner and 1 judge scores the other fighter the winner. Unanimous decision means all 3 judges voted the same way.

Buttkus was Stallone's actual dog. When he was still an unknown, struggling actor, he was so poor that he had to sell Buttkus just to get something to eat.
But when Stallone sold the Rocky script & got to play the lead, even though the studio wanted a well known name in the role like Ryan O'Neal or Burt Reynolds, he bought back Buttkus, but he had to pay extra than what he sold Buttkus originally.

In real life a boxing match this brutal would have been stopped by the Refs before it got out of hand so it’s a bit unrealistic for them to be this violent.
Leather jackets were already popular due to 1950’s nostalgia that was big in the 70’s and the Fonze on Happy Days.

There so much about this movie. Butkus the dog was Stallone real dog that he had to sell at one point and once he sold the script he bought the dog back.
It’s not just a movie about Rocky but a movie about the belief Stallone had in him as he actually wrote the movie as well and turned down 100’s of thousands of dollars to stay true to his beliefs that he could star in the movie! An amazing story on screen and off!

I went ice skating with my Boy Scout troop and one much older guy kept shoving me. After doing that many times he tried again and fell in front of me. One of his hands landed directly in front of one of my skates. Maybe it was because my rental skates were dull or maybe because I didn’t weigh a lot, but his hand wasn’t cut as badly as I would have expected.

you really need to watch the second movie if you loved this. On your question. Prior to his fight with Rocky, Apollo was 46-0 with all wins by Knockout. Rocky wanted to go the distance (15 rounds) because no one ever had with Apollo. All of his prior opponents got knocked out. The only criticism of this movie was by boxers who criticized how low they carried their hands and both had poor defense. Also, the referee would have stopped the fight once Rocky couldn't see or Apollo struggled to breathe. Those were the only criticisms of the movie. It was a masterpiece and a one of a kind at its time.

Good one, Aria! Yes, Apollo was 46-0, and had won all 46 of his fights by knockout, so Rocky still standing after 15 rounds was a big deal. That was Rocky's personal victory even though he lost the fight. There are 6 Rocky movies altogether and not really a bad one in the bunch. My personal favorite is the last one called Balboa. Thank you for sharing this one. 🙂 I'm glad you enjoyed it!

So the music score was all composed by Bill Conti...except for the Marines Hymn (Apollo's ring entrance), "Summer Madness" by Kool & The Gang (bedroom scene) and "Take You Back" by Frank Stallone (acapella street corner song).
Much of the music was reused in Rocky II and some was re-tooled and re-worked for Rocky III as well.
Rocky III introduced the song "Eye Of The Tiger" by Survivor which became a #1 hit.
Rocky IV featured a mostly Rock and Pop soundtrack, like you mentioned "Burning Heart" also by Survivor. "Hearts on Fire" by John Cafferty, "No Easy Way Out by Robert Tepper. There were two instrumental pieces used for the training montage and the final fight composed by Vince DiCola, which used some elements of "Gonna Fly Now".

Everyone I’ve seen react to Rocky is always shocked when Mick says turtles make good soup. In Mick’s day (1920-1940) turtle soup was very popular. Lots of it came from Key West and Cuba. Just about wiped out the turtle population in that area.

Rocky is a small time boxer who gets the chance to fight for the world championship. Rocky gets the chance but he has his critics. Mickey his trainer gives him hope. He falls in love with Adrian, and he begins to improve. He had Apollo Creed on the ropes just ready to fall the bell rang. Rocky went the distance! Most important than any world title is The love of Adrian.

He wanted to stay at finish, it was Creed always saying Creed in 3, then announcers did too. All he wanted was finishing standing up, he did! This was 2 years after TV series Happy Days, which that coat was wanted by all.Henry Winkler was Fonzie, named in 1999 TV Guide poll as #4 of the 50 greatest TV Characters of All Time. NPR said for kids growing up in the 70s, there was One, absolute model of cool, not James Dean or Marlon Brando, but the Fonz!

I am so thrilled that you are diving into the Rocky series, Aria!
As you saw, this movie is about a man's life as a boxer who is looking for all that a person wants. Love and acceptance, this is not only about boxing.
It was so charming seeing you gushing over Rocky's leather jacket. I hope you can find one just like it. Also, if you can find a hat like Rocky's you should buy that too, lol.
The leather jacket craze started from Marlon Brando's look in the 1953 movie, "The Wild One".
Those jackets were more for the bikers, whereas Sylvester Stallone's jacket was more of an overcoat. If you find a jacket like that, you'll have to model it for us. You would look super cool.
Another boxing movie that you should check out is "The Fighter", starring Mark Wahlberg and Christian Bale. Very good movie.
Really enjoyed this, Aria. You need more subscribers! Take care, my friend!

Some Rocky facts! Pauly was only 34-35 when he started rocky, so he was only like 5 years older than Stallone! when he started this series
U really should watch any documentary on how this got made!! Broke, almost homeless, sold his dog...for real!😮...wrote the script in 3 weeks. Was asked big money(back then) to sell it, but not star in it. He always said no. Finally sold it for 30k to ABC TV. He was good friends with and done a movie a few years prior, with Henry Winkler. He became THE STAR of😊 abc tv in the show Happy Days, as the Fonz. He heard Stallone sold the script to ABC. Henry goes to the ABC heads and says, u don't GIVE me that script, I leave the show....they gave it to him! Stallone never made a ton of money on the rockymovies. Only as a writer actor choreographer. He got ripped off by the first producer, who bought the rights and rocky name, and never sold it back to Stallone, though he's made billions! Based on a real tune up fight, for Ali. He was going to fight Frazier later in the year, for the title, but he wanted a tune-up fight. He fought against Chuck Wepner, a journeyman tomato can bleeder, who was good, but never top 10 ranked. And he damn near knocked Ali out!😮 The guy singing outside, is his real brother Frank!😮 The first guy he fights in this movie, Spider, shows up in Rocky Balboa or Creed! The teenage girl he talks to, also comes back in one of those movies! Adrian is the sister in godfather!😮😮😮😮 Gazzo, his boss, also in godfather 1-2! Stallone almost died in 4, because Drago, actually cracked his ribs, puntured a lung, punctured his heart sac! Drago in real life, has multiple masters PhD in engineering! The blonde wife of Drago, shows up in Creed 2 and so does Drago, and Stallone actually married that woman, and had beautiful daughters with her! Tommy Morrison in part 5 was a real boxer and could have been the greatest ever, but drugs and booze got him. In 3 Clubber got the role, by winning a Tough man contest! In 3 hulk Hogan, hit Stallone for real in the back of his shoulders with his forearm, and moved vertebrae. Dennis Quaid did a amateur tough guy boxing movie, kind of based on the Clubber Lang actor, that was very good, called Tough Enough! and busted his lip open! There was never going to be a 2, but this movie made so much money, win Oscars, etc., Stallone wrote a sequel! When he was accepting an Oscar for this movie on stage, Ali comes up, grabs him, fakes punches at him and says, "u stole this movie idea from me!" Paulie has done a couple other great movies, Rob the Mob, and Pope of Greenich Village! Adrian is part of the Coppola family.... Francis Ford, Nick Cage, Sophia Coppola... maybe her daughter! What 1 and 2 are really, the ultimate love story! U can go see the Rocky statue in Philly! The mistake of colors he's wearing, in the auditorium, was due to a mistake and money problems, so they kept it in, and had the dialogue reflect this! Watch all but u can skip 5, finish the Rocky series, then go to Creed! The Great fight ever... middleweight Ray...boom boom Mancini vs Duk ku Kim,... outdoors, Caesars palace. Outdoors. Went the distance. Slug fest. Kim died in the ring. He fought the last round with a busted blood vessel in his brain. Fights went to twelve after that.
Cinderella Man is a great True story movie about a depression Era boxer!

Rocky is not a boxing movie…. It’s a love story.
    Just a few facts…Sylvester S… wrote Rocky.
1- He did not want to sell it unless he played Rocky.
2- the dog in the movie, was his real life dog.
3- He had to sell his dog at one point in order to make ends meet…. He finally bought the dog back.
4- In 1976 Rocky won best picture and the Oscar that year.
5- Yes the Rocky series is great and 2 is even better… so you can’t stop now… just enjoy the ride.

Stallone wrote this movie. All the studios loved the script but Stallone really wanted to play Rocky and they all hated this and wanted this professional actor or another. Stallone stuck to his guns and waited and waited. Eventually times got so lean, that he sold his dog Butkus for $40.
Eventually Stallone found studio wiling to let him play the part and, I can't imagine anyone else in this part. He bought his dog back for $15,000 (over 80k today), and with the proviso that Butkus would have a part in the movie.
Butkus has long since passed, but Stallone is such an animal lover that when Rocky was over he took both his turtles (Cuff and Link) home with him and they are both still with us, and got cameos in Creed II.
The poster is of Rocky Marciano, heavyweight champion. He retired undefeated with 40 something wins. A feat never equaled.
Apollo won the fight.. If a fight doesn't end in a KO, or a TKO (the fighter is too badly wounded or can't defend himself) it goes to a decision amongst three judges. In this fight two of the judges voted for Apollo, so he won.

Weathers is in the first four Rocky movies, but he gets the most to do in III (can't say why because, spoilers), which is fine because everything after IV sucks (mini-spoiler: there's another cool jacket in II).
