Amazing Haul! I just started collecting criterions (I got 4 at the moment) and I love watching other people collecting them. You earned a new subscriber.
The Young Girls of Rochefort was a blind buy for me a year ago along with The Umbrellas of Cherbourg. Both are great but Rochefort just stood out. It's a 1950's Minnelli style movie musical which were always huge on French culture. Setting it in the then modern day and utilizing MOD fashions just set it above everything else. The opening ballet number is iconic. It's pastiche in its purest form.
I’m so happy to see you’re buying criterion again. I saw your video a week ago of when you had to sell all your stuff and here we are a year later. Life can be cool sometimes
I watched cure after you talked about it when it was first announced. Thanks for the rec! It quickly became one of my favorites and was also my definite for this sale. It really rattles your psyche!
Three fantastic journeys by karel zeman is freaking amazing, to think when it was made , how beautiful it looks ….along with moonrise kingdom, city lights, and dr Strangelove…Kubricks greatest movie in my mind!! Then my last pick would be repo man , so trippy and crazy, and the music in it is just wild..my favorite Emilio estevez movie! Which is saying a lot cuz he has a lot of good ones out there.
I'm shocked you want to do another two hauls after this behemoth of a haul. Also, I recommend you pick up Frownland. It's by Ronald Bronstein, who stars in Daddy Longlegs by the Safdie Brothers.
I highly recommend picking up Letter Never Sent next time! It's absolutely incredible. Sadly there are zero bonus features, but it should be cheaper because of that. Still worth getting on blu just because the cinematography is mindblowing. I was stoked Cate shouted it out in the Criterion Closet despite getting the title wrong.
Great Picks! Just in the last year I picked up Brief Encounter, Anatomy of a Murder, and Fail-Safe. I am looking forward to getting Leave Her to Heaven when I hit the sale this week. Good stuff, keep it up 👍 Edit: Anatomy was a blind buy for me too, and I am really looking forward to watching it soon.
Good god was that an actual picture you took of the empty B&N Criterion selection?? Cure 🐐 it’s completely sold out in my area. Glad the interest is through the roof for it though as it is a masterpiece!
thought the same thing when i saw the clear case on the 4k NOTLD 😞 the blu digipak looks so damn good. idk what they were thinking to downgrade it for the 4k release
Went totally NUTS on the 50% off Criterion Sale, since I heard the CC fired 20% of their staff. I got scared right quick lol... Hoping they're around forever, producing physical releases (along with the _amazing_ streaming channel). Was trying to keep them alive just off my orders 😆 but I bought some all-time classics... _The Ascent, L'Avventura, Rules Of The Game, Elevator To The Gallows, Harakiri, Come And See, Night Of The Hunter, The Cremator, La Notte, A Special Day, State Of Siege, The Organizer, Pale Flower, The Before Trilogy, John Cassavetes: 5 Films, Letter Never Sent, The Cranes Are Flying, Mr. Klein, Bitter Rice, Il Sorpasso, Ivan's Childhood, The Double Lives Of Veronique, Swing Time, 12 Angry Men, The Executioner, The Tin Drum, Gate Of Eden, Divorce Italian Style, Christ Stopped At Eboli, Night On Earth, Lost Highway, Eraserhead, The Ballad Of Narayama, Gate Of Hell, The Pornographers, Onibaba, Cat People, Story Of A Prostitute_ and _Rififi._ All absolutely incredible films... by far, the biggest Criterion order of my life lol - and the month ain't over!
Wait … I’m not getting a digi pack for the lost highway Blu Ray I just ordered??? All my other Lynch criterion movies have the digi pack. It’s gonna be the odd one out
My first encounter of your videos and I like it! As for that magnificent film Brief Encounter: it is maybe on a smaller scale but no less epic than Lean's other films. Don't just see this as a love story of sorts, see it as as a commentary on postwar society, in that after WW2 many women had to regress to their lives as wifes and mothers, leaving behind roles of maybe more significance during the war when they had to fill the positions men usually took in society. That theme gives an extra layer to this gem of a picture, I think.
Do you happen to know if a booklet will come with the Lost Highway Blu Ray? Not the 2-disc 4KUHD digi-pack one. I’m wondering if the booklet will come with the single-disc blu ray plastic-cased one.
My favorite of your bunch is ROMA. But the film aside, my comment is about the cover art. It amazes me how it captures the exact moment we see her walking toward the beach, afraid of the water, but she is called back to the water and without any trepidation, goes into said water to save the lives of the children. She is now a permanent member of that family. Not just the cleaning woman anymore (well, she was more than that for sure but now is blood, you might say). I didn't really incapsulate that very well, but I just find it so striking, how that split second moment is captured on the cover. Enjoyed your haul video.
That's a lot of great buys. I just watched take out and then listened to the commentary and I think out of this haul that's my favorite although I haven't seen a lot of these films. I went on a spending spree in July I still have a few films I need to get too So I'm not really going to buy much this sale but I'm definitely getting Wall-E and I want Malcolm X and Cure. I also picked up In the mood for love in 4k from amazon since I love that movie but I already have the World of Wong Kar Wai set and I'm kind of disappointed that this disc has no HDR and no new special features to the disc. It's just a duplicate of the version from the box set in 4k. I'm probably going to return it. BTW I just watched your film essay on Onibaba and it's great I hope you do one for Cure
I hate Digipacks. While they look nice brand new, they age like dogshit even if you put them on the shelf and never take them out again. Also, good luck getting one without at least one crumpled corner.
I agree. They look great at first but they are cheap. I love the art on them but I'd prefer regular clear cases for all releases. Honestly don't understand at all why they don't do half the pressing regular cases when they do a digipack for a title. Doesn't cost them any more and makes everybody happy
I wish Barnes and Noble would open up many stores here in the UK. And I think they are better than WH Smith - and I haven't been to any of their stores in years! Because WH Smith have gone to cr*p imo.
How long do these Criterion sales at B&N go on for? Or was this like a one day sale? Because I'd love to pick up a few for that deep discount, but I had no idea this was a thing and I'm hoping I didn't miss it. Because boy would I LOVE to get the Bruce Lee collection for half off. But...in all fairness...if they had it, it would likely be the first one to sell out.
If you have access to it in your country, the Criterion Channel is my go to streaming service. Most of criterion’s library is on the channel, so it’s a great place to watch films before deciding on what to purchase!

Marriage story is one of the greatest dramas I've ever seen I cry every time
Brief Encounter is AMAZING! Next sale, I’m picking up a copy myself!

The Apu Trilogy is a must buy for any Criterion collector. Definitely worth every penny.

Yesss I’m so glad you enjoyed it! Cure is kino 110%
I just did the sale online , got cronos, raging bull 4K, Bruce lee set , fear and loathing , princes bride, only angels have wings, the game…
You flying right by multiple Fassbinder DVDs is tearing me apart!
WOW!!!! I got 10 criterion’s during the sale but I have to wait until Christmas to open them lol 💀💀💀

Next round...I recommend something in the "crazy" department...be curious to see what you would get that is crazy or cultish. Great Video.
I will get something in the crazy department just for you Spaghet😂 maybe something.. “shocking” if you will
Goat is back
Digipacks suffer more shelf wear over time. I try to put them in plastic sleeves.
I couldn’t have waited to buy cure. I bought it weeks ago for Halloween. Phenomenal movie.
This one is big on my list as a potential blind buy. Might just end up streaming first though
@@MattLeDonne27 it makes a great double feature with Memories Of Murder.
Loved this video, Bill! I watched with envy :)
Sound of Metal premiered at TIFF in 2019, but didn't get distribution (by amazon) until late 2020.
Hence the 2019 date on the cover.
I looked at the trailer for "Young Girls..." now I have to own it. Gene Kelly? Thank you. Just subscribed
I pick up 1 to 2 every sale, Bill out here giving an arm and a leg to build his collection. Amazing haul, can't wait to see what else you pick up.
Cure is fantastic, watched for the first time a few months ago and was so happy when it got announced. Can’t wait to get it in July!
I'm shocked you want to do another two hauls after this behemoth of a haul. Also, I recommend you pick up Frownland. It's by Ronald Bronstein, who stars in Daddy Longlegs by the Safdie Brothers.

I went crazy last year and bought 114. Only 26 this year. God help us 😂
I'm sorry but, ONE HUNDRED AND FOURTEEN!
Yup, I love classic movies, especially international classic movies. many remain unopened as we watch only 1 a week.@@GojiCollector1954

Luckily all the B&N by me do not have the same level of stock yours has. Keeps my spending in check lol
Keep an eye on Amazon, they are slowly doing half prices in these
@@lordrayden3045 yeah anything I really want and can’t find in person I get off Amazon . Just nice to browse in person

Dude I got it on Amazon for half off. It's still going on so do us both a favor and get it. More Bruce Lee fans is always a good thing
Very cool !
Why would you buy Some Like it Hot on Criterion when Kino Lorber has a 4K release?
