Dan, thanks for the memories mate. Back in 1979 I drove the first vehicle to cross this area following Madigan's 1939 camel journey - compass only, no tracks, all cross country thus laying the foundation for the now famous Madigan Line. As a point of interest in 1985 and about five and a half kilometres past Madigan's Camp 12 heading East, at age 52 I crossed the Madigan Line (not in existence then naturally) with a pack on my back and powered only by two feet and a heartbeat. I was heading southward on compass 155 degrees true while walking solo across Australia north to south with no vehicle support and passing through the centre of the Simpson Desert. Yes mate ... it is quiet out there - the sound is deafening! Back in 1980 I wrote a story and penned a poem about my special place. I named it Big Red. It was a place of solitude and reflection for me and I certainly didn't envisage that one day it would become famous and also as a challenging climb and playground for the 4X4 travellers who visit this remote and beautiful area. At 89 I never tire of enjoying and reliving the past through stories like yours. Cheers.
Wow Denis, that is absolutely epic, and I'm honoured to have you drop by and watch my video.
Thanks for laying the foundations so people like me can get out and enjoy that stunning place!

Wow, it just shows that nothing is new under the sun. Can’t imagine having enough water? Good on you mates!
A true adventurer.
Hi Dan,
Just seen your trips, most inspiring.
Would love to see some of the outback towns you leave (Mt Dare etc) and arrive at. Your special perspective in filming these would be great 👍😊
Great looking trip, I like how thorough you were sharing your planning and the resulting fuel + water usage. Glad you are both feeling better!
Camels are a curse and should not be revered but your video is fantastic!
The best adventure overland channel on the planet, no question!👍
Glad you guys are feeling better!
That thing flew up the dune!
Still waiting for the boomerang lesson. I threw a boomerang once. I’ve lived in fear ever since!🪃🪃😂
Thanks 👍
I’ve always cooked damper on a stick and when it’s done you stuff it with butter and jam but your savoury variations sound delicious
Wow 🤩
You really take the concept of "isolation when ill" to the extreme. :-)
Thanks for sharing the videos while you are on the road! We did miss it when you were in Africa. So happy that you enjoyed it!!
You made Big Red look easy. I am now inspired to drive the Madigan Line. Many thanks for the video. Glad you are recovering.
Go for it!
All that water! I've been to Birdsville 4 or 5 times and never seen it like that!
Big Red didn't stress the Jeep much at all :)
The bread looked wonderful. Glad your both feeling better. Thanks for taking us along.
Good to see you two are getting better, Your crossing is just amazing , thank you for the video
Thanks 👍
Dan, looks like another great adventure. To comment on your fuel consumption I just drove my Gladiator 3500 miles around the US west - a lot of highway but some good trails too - and averaged 18.8 miles per gallon! That's with RTT, 15 gallons of water, climbing gear, dive gear, and everything else. Granted a lot of highway, but still, that's pretty good! The more I drive my jeep the happier I am with me it's performance.
What tire brand, model, size, and wheel material and size ? Also is your Gladiator a Rubicon and what engine ?
Walk in loose sand for an hour and you'll realize why he is only getting 11.5 mpg.
Thank you Dan for your wonderful video good luck in your travels😎👍
I can almost feel those flies from here and keep wanting to swat my face lol.
Absolutely beautiful out there. Much greener than I expected, though it has been rather wet lately. Fuel economy was surprisingly good too.
Fully sick mate . I love that stuff
Your filming and editing is fantastic.
Thank you so much!
Awesome trip, will get to do it one day.
Fly's and finishing with Big Red......... very fun run. t
So cool
Riding waves in a sea of sand. Unreal.
If it's true uv light kills covid, it's kind of a good thing symptom-wise you were in the desert getting plenty of sunlight. I'm so glad you 2 are feeling better! I can't wait to go across the U.S. in my manual gladiator you helped me decide to get a gladiator a few months ago. I can't wait to start my own adventure you've inspired me with your videos
I don't think there is any truth that UV kills Covid. We had plenty of UV through our summer and plenty of Covid. I expect its just another rumour.
16:10 "hue smile on my face" ...when not and thats why we watch you
Haha, I suppose so!
Katie interview when!?
Thank you for sharing the adventure.
Yay
On my bucket list :-) . How is the Jeep fairing now youve done so much in it. Any issues? Living up to your expectations?
It's flawless and I'm loving it!
@@TheRoadChoseMe Great to hear.👍 Doing my best to make it happen for me 😊

Bummer about you guys getting COVID just as you start your crossing. But being alone in a scenic desert is a good way to self-isolate. But it still sucks though. Glad to you guys came away well. Was your Simpson Desert fuel consumption 50% more (or higher) than your usual on-road consumption? What is your usual on-road fuel consumption with your setup?
On road I'm getting around 12-13L/100km, in the Simpson it was just under 20L/100km.
@@TheRoadChoseMe Thanks.👍 I'm preparing to tackle the Simpson Desert next year (W-E via French Line), with my petrol 4.5L 80 Series LandCruiser (OEM dual tanks - 145L total), and having enough fuel is my biggest concern.
Amazing.
Glad you're feeling better.
How many vehicles did you see in those 11 days?
We were on the crossing for 7 days, we didn't see a single vehicle.

😳
Has anyone calculated the weight of flys in Australia?
What do they live off? Not enough tourists.
Dan, did you cover your photographic equipment you carry with you? Pretty curious about lenses and mics you use.
I have not done an episode about that yet Wolfgang... maybe I will sometime.
Is this the Wolfgang that I know?
Great video so far....At 13:45 what was that in front of you? Cheers from Texas
Emu!
@@TheRoadChoseMe Epic adventure....I can't wait to see what's next!!
At ~3.30, is that an earthquake fault?
What month did you do it as you say flies were bad
To be honest I think they're always bad!
We were there in May from memory, and as far as these things go, they were not that bad
COVID positive and around people at big red... not cool
That was 7 days after we tested positive... so we isolated the required amount of time.
Let me tell you something 'not cool'... Cyclists.
Parma, not parmy. Or you’re not a true Victorian. 😉
