    I agree that the company provided hard cases for tool sets should be replaced with a soft case. Although the contents of plastic cases are immediately verifiable, the cases deteriorate. Soft cases fit into available vehicle storage spaces more easily.

    Extremely professional and comprehensive. At the same level as Tom Shepard's bible on overland expeditions. I don't know the Simpson desert so can't make any meaningful comment but most other expeditions wouldn't require this level of preparation.
    One small suggestion - I have resisted locking diffs (apart from the central locker which is OE) because of the complexity. I find that limited slip diffs give a very useful improvement in traction although they don't work unless the wheels are touching the ground of course. They are "fit and forget".
    This video will be invaluable to anyone who is planning this trip. Well done.

    • @AlloffroadAu
      @AlloffroadAu  2 года назад

      I would agree a good ATB is also a good option and i used to have one in the front of my Discovery 2 (eventually changed to for a locker though as it gave me more control for rock climbing and was not reactive) never used one in Sand though wonder if it can make things harder as it still reactive.

    Its not a challenge anymore and its become a highway with traffic problems. Motorcyclists are crossing it in two days unassisted. Now if you want a challenge there is still the Canning. Thats an achievement.

    Informative and a great summary 👍 I too do not carry a high lift jack. I've never had the need to use one (touch wood it stays that way). It's just an extra unnecessary weight to carry. As I have a FJZ80 (ie. petrol), fuel is my biggest concern for a Simpson Desert crossing. I've been told, to double the average on-road fuel consumption of your 4WD, to get an average Simpson Desert fuel consumption. For me that means to double my average on-road fuel consumption of 18L/100km (36L/100kms!). Base on this, to do the crossing between Mt Dare to Birdsville via the French Line, I'll need an additional 60L on top of the 145L on-board tanks. Yikes! Though when driving on Stockton Beach, I usually get an average of around 25-26L/100km. I'll need to look into this more.

    • @AlloffroadAu
      @AlloffroadAu  2 года назад +2

      Stockton fuel figures should be quite accurate mate

    • @fatmanoverlanding
      @fatmanoverlanding 2 года назад +1

      You should be right. I know two people who have crossed the Simpson on an FJ Cruiser and a petrol Pajero, carrying only 2 spare jerry cans of fuel each (40L extra). The FJ Cruiser, only needing to use one for the trip.

    I see you use a Coleman white fuel stove. I find they are way more efficient than propane for the weight and burn hotter. I also live at high altitude, so propane doesn't always work under low pressure. Had mine 20 yrs and never an issue🤠

    Absolutely fantastic videos I’ve only just discovered them and about to do Simpson desert trip. I must admit not having used many GPS applications in the past (apart from Mud Maps 3) I am not sure whether to just convert to Memory Maps after your reviews, or if I should use Explore Oz? Or perhaps should I be using both? Any thoughts you have would be appreciated

    • @AlloffroadAu
      @AlloffroadAu  2 года назад

      the new Memory Maps for all should be out any day now so I wait for that, for the Desert MM is better than ExplorOz however if you can afforded having both is a good option
