Goodfellas Movie Description :
A young man grows up in the mob and works very hard to advance himself through the ranks. He enjoys his life of money and luxury, but is oblivious to the horror that he causes. A drug addiction and a few mistakes ultimately unravel his climb to the top. Based on the book "Wiseguy" by Nicholas Pileggi.
Goodfellas (stylized GoodFellas) is a 1990 American biographical crime film directed by Martin Scorsese, written by Nicholas Pileggi and Scorsese, and produced by Irwin Winkler. It is a film adaptation of the 1985 nonfiction book Wiseguy by Pileggi. Starring Robert De Niro, Ray Liotta, Joe Pesci, Lorraine Bracco and Paul Sorvino, the film narrates the rise and fall of mob associate Henry Hill and his friends and family from 1955 to 1980.
Scorsese initially titled the film Wise Guy and postponed making it; he and Pileggi later changed the title to Goodfellas. To prepare for their roles in the film, De Niro, Pesci and Liotta often spoke with Pileggi, who shared research material left over from writing the book. According to Pesci, improvisation and ad-libbing came out of rehearsals wherein Scorsese gave the actors freedom to do whatever they wanted. The director made transcripts of these sessions, took the lines he liked most and put them into a revised script, which the cast worked from during principal photography.
Goodfellas premiered at the 47th Venice International Film Festival on September 9, 1990, where Scorsese was awarded with Silver Lion for Best Director, and was released in the United States on September 19, 1990 by Warner Bros. The film was made on a budget of $25 million, and grossed $47 million. The critical consensus on Rotten Tomatoes calls it "arguably the high point of Martin Scorsese's career". The film was nominated for six Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director, with Pesci winning for Best Supporting Actor. The film won five awards from the British Academy of Film and Television Arts, including Best Film and Best Director. Additionally, Goodfellas was named the year's best film by various critics' groups.
Goodfellas is widely regarded as one of the greatest films ever made, particularly in the gangster genre. In 2000, it was deemed "culturally, historically, and aesthetically significant" and selected for preservation in the National Film Registry by the United States Library of Congress. Its content and style have been emulated in numerous other films and television series.

The reason Scorsese is attracted to Mafia films is because that's what he grew up around. He was raised in Little Italy in New York during the height of the Italian Mafia's power.

And the reason he casts pesci all the time is joes connections. Pesci has real and long standing ties with the mafia. All his cousins were ranking members. Pesci actually worked as a liason between the mob and movie producers. He's a legit friend in their world

I had a friend who grew up with Scorsese; they were two years apart and lived on the same block. He used to say that, at least in Scorsese's earlier movies, he could pick out specific characters and match them up with the people in the neighborhood that Scorsese based them off of. Unfortunately my friend Ciro (his family was Sicilian, and his father owned a grocery store in the neighborhood) passed away about five years ago.
That was Scorsese's mother who played Tommy's mom, and Scorsese's father was the older man that shot Tommy.

The witness protection guy was played by the actual dude who dealt with the real Henry Hill
He went to Boston College when they were shaving points on college basketball. Ed took it personally and went after all of them, starting with Henry.
And the Narc officer who tasted the cocaine to prove it was legit was a real NYPD detective.
He and Henry Hill even did a DVD commentary for the movie too.
The guy playing the Federal Prosecutor was the actual Federal Prosecutor who gave the Hills the plea deal they took. Remember his wife was also on the hook for drug charges. Since she was an active participant of his crimes at that point.
The guy playing Henry is an actor. 🙄
Robert De Niro is as far as I know the only actor to have gotten the explicit blessing from a former gangster to play that same gangster in a movie. The movie Casino, Robert's character was a real person, and al of the "made men" opened up to the director when they learned Robert was gonna be in the movie. He has that gravitas.
Robert Deniro did not play a made man in Casino. But he's DeNiro any gangster would have killed....bad choice of words....would have been stoked to have DeNiro play them

It's funny, the only reason this movie was made was because Henry Hill pretty much outlived everyone that wanted him dead. Unfortunately, he died in 2012 from heart disease.
He was also apparently a pretty good cook. I bought his cookbook, Cooking on the Run, just after he died. Great recipes.
None of them were dead when the movie was made. They were actively trying to find him, triggering the FBI to move him to new places.

Dude, that scene with Pesci saying, “what do you mean I’m funny”..... Pesci completely improvised the scene. None of that stuff was in the script. The awkward tension that communicated on the camera was largely real.
Pesci and Liotta rehearsed the dialogue change, but nobody else knew. You're right, the rest of the actors don't know what to make of it...............tremendous..........

Seeing Goodfellas in a packed theatre filed with Italians on opening night on Long Island, the "How am I funny" scene had everyone afraid to breathe. You could hear a pin drop. Single most intense movie theater experience I've ever had.
Its like that old thing where if everyone that said they were at Woodstock would have actually been there, it would have been like 10 million people there atleast

The cut toward the beginning of the film from the freeze frame with the cars blowing up behind Henry and the line “it was out of respect” straight to the next scene of the dude screaming running down the street because he was shot, is one of the greatest cuts in film history IMO. The editing throughout the whole movie is superb, absolute perfection.
Also, that beat down of Bruce in broad daylight is one of the most badass scenes in film history

Scorsese's 'Raging Bull' is the movie that put Pesci on the map, but Goodfellas is what made people really take notice of his screen power. He plays even more of a loose-canon in 'Casino'

To answer how they found out about tommy killing batts, in the real story, Paulie was sleeping with Henrys Wife, when tommy found out he tried to force himself on Henrys wife and she ended up telling paulie, Paulie then told the a Gambinos the truth about billy, its rumored that Gotti himself was present during the execution...you cant trust nobody in that life.
Ah ok so Paulie knew that Tommy killed Billy Bates the whole time, I knew all that stuff except for that detail that he knew and basically sold Tommy out.

Pauli also decided to protect Jimmy cause he was making him money. The Gambinos knew Jimmy was also involved but pauli negotiated to keep him alive. That's why they said Billy Batts & amongst other things.

Modern gangs still do it, you get the kids to do alot of the worst stuff, its easier to get them to do it and if they get caught, they usually get lighter sentences.
They’re also dumb enough to do it. Old gangbangers don’t get that way by doing stupid shit.
When you think about the killing of Billy Batts and how his crew found out, remember that there were a lot of people who saw him celebrating in the bar on the night he was murdered. The whole scene that unfolded between him and Tommy would have been spread around by enough people.
In real life, the fight at the bar and the murder happened about two weeks apart and in different locations. Plus the movie doesn't really talk about Jimmy wanting to murder Billy Batts as well, since while Batts was in prison Jimmy took control of a few rackets Batts had and was making a lot of money off them. When Batts returned, he wanted those rackets back and as a made man could just take them from Jimmy.
Your editing is awesome. You avoid copyright claims, but it feels like we are watching the entire movie with you. I can't put it into words, but your editing technique is superb 👌

I love the constant dialogue in Steven Spielberg films as well- multiple conversations going on at once. I love when scenes are realistic. Anyway love Goodfellas, Casino is amazing too. Gotta love Pesci and De Niro together.
Fun Fact: Goodfellas was nominated for 7 Oscars in 1990, only winning one - “Supporting Actor - Joe Pesci.”
The “how am I funny” scene really happened to Joe Pesci, except roles reversed. He knows and hangs out with real mob guys. One of them was telling a story and Pesci says, “You’re funny…” That’s how the scene came about. That’s also how Pesci, De Niro, and Scorsese knows this stuff so well. They really know these guys, and they grew up around these guys.
Even for a violent business, Pesci's character was just too unstable to be a made man (promotion) Ultimately he wasn't good for business.
Mafia movies and war movies are scarier to me than actual horror because of how real they can be.

Fr though this is a chilling and disturbing movie at times. It’s one of the most beautifully directed and performed movies ever made IMO, but the violence is realistic and brutal.
A Bronx tale and the irishman, both films are gold.
The Irishman was amazing. I know a lot of people thought it was long and boring, but I found it engrossing as it really delved into the characters and their thinking. Most Americans don’t have the stamina to read a book, much less watch a very intelligent movie. We have lost the patience for attention to detail.
Except when Robert beat up the storekeeper. That looked anything but realistic.
I loved the irishman
The Irishman was horrible, nothing in that movie was true. My father grew up with Crazy Joe Gallo and he was killed by 2 brothers in the Mafia. Nobody from Pittsburgh came and killed Joey lol
I saw Goodfellas for the first time when I was 10-years-old and it was immediately my favorite movie, and still up there for me today. I've watched it countless times, and obviously know quite a bit of the details. Fun fact that most people aren't aware of: although made by totally different people, technically the Steve Martin comedy 'My Blue Heaven' is a sequel to the Goodfellas story. If you haven't seen it, it's worth checking out too.

Watching your Goodfellas reaction was like watching the movie for the first time through someone else’s eyes. It’s my favorite movie ever and this was a joy to watch!
This was a really good reaction 👏 Back in the nineties and oughts Henry Hill used to call in to Howard Stern’s show a lot and that was...interesting 😄 Henry’s kids wrote a book about their version of events which is pretty good. The book is called “On The Run” by Gina and Gregg Hill.
Along with watching Michael Franzese's videos, I would also recommend watching the History Buff's video on Goodfellas as well. He goes into depth on the back stories on certain scenes and into depth on Henry Hill's life including that he was ADHD in a time when that wasn't treated/handled properly. He also goes into the times that Henry tried to escape the mob life due everything that that life can entail.

In the history Buff's video he gets a lot of information from Henry Hill himself who isn't exactly the most reliable man in the world, he's obviously gonna paint himself better than the people he was around
You've finally stumbled on my most favorite movie of all time. Yay! At one point, you ask how Scorsese was able get into these characters' heads. Scorcese has said that he grew up in NYC during this time, which helped him understand the characters. It's also based on a true story, including the Lufthansa heist, and (the real-life) Henry Hill consulted on the making of Goodfellas. Another interesting tidbit is that the woman who plays Joe Pesci's (i.e., Tommy's) mother in the film is Scorcese's mother in real life.
13:20 this is the thing about Cosa Nostra - Batts was a made guy, Tommy wasn't, so Batts could say what he likes to Tommy, and Tommy would have to eat it. Even before killing him, Tommy would have been in very hot water insulting Batts the way he did, knowing he was a made guy. He may even have been killed for the insults alone.
When it was filmed the “entering of the copa” shot was the longest single take movie shot in history

Also all the people who were outside in line as Henry and Karen entered the back way of the Copa, they had to run in because they had to fill the tables for the scene by the time they got to the Host who sits them.
When movies were in their infancy, there was no such thing as editing. You placed the cameraman in front of a stage and he just records your entire play.
The business of cigarettes (and other stolen goods) is based on the fact that you get goods at little cost (you have stolen them), and you can afford to sell them very cheaply and fast for great profits. MAke a deal with a truck driver of cigarettes and the profit is brutal. Especially if they are highly taxed goods but that everyone wants to consume, such as tobacco.
In my country, Spain, tobacco taxes were so high that for some years cigarette smuggling could be compared in scale to drug trafficking.
I love this movie so much. After he shoots the kid who didn't get him his drink he says: "You gunna make me think what the fuck I did here..." This is the most Italian thing I've ever heard said in my entire life.

One of my favorites of all time. But to be honest, his modern stuff like TWOWS was trash. And The Departed we Meh too. Jack was miscast. And it got silly af. Elevator scene was silly.

I cannot express how much I appreciate your in-depth appreciation for this movie. You highlighted most of the main scenes and really made the viewer understand the movie, without watching the entire experience. This is one of my all-time favorite films, and know that I'm subscribed.
Paulie mentions that questions were being asked about Batts, and he knew how much of a liability both Tommy and Jimmy were (particularly Tommy) so he may have been the one to sell Tommy out to the Italians- but it honestly could have been anybody, more than a few people knew Batts and Tommy had argued, and that Batts was at the bar last. It doesn't take a genius to put those pieces together, killing a made man without a sitdown is an extremely poor decision.
Thing is, Tommy DeSimone was such a loose cannon, it's been said that the real Paulie ratted him out to the Gambinos. (At least that's Henry Hill's theory. Also, it's his theory that Tommy was killed by John Gotti himself.)
Ironically, a former capo said that the prison dinner scene is unrealistic because while they ate better than most prisoners they didn't get lobsters and things like that. That was too much. He did say his name is mentioned in the movie, though!

In the dinner scene, Tommy's mom was played by Martin Scorsese's mom. The scene was mostly improvised. Martin's mom would cook for the cast.
This is probably one of my top 5 movies of all time, and I've got A LOT of favs. I've watched this so many times I have pretty much all the dialogue memorized. Old coworker and I would act out the "Why did you do that?!" with Henry and Karen. Love every single thing about this movie.

I think by memory there was 27 actors in Goodfellas that also appeared in the TV series The Sopranos, a great series that was one of the first to get the mega series ball rolling.

I heard the "funny how" scene was ad lib by Joe Pesci. He had seen something similar happen when he was growing up, so him and the director decided to try it out. What really makes it great is that the other actors did not know he was going to do it, but stayed in character the whole time.

Meh. Got stale for me. Never was a huge Sopranos fan.
I first saw this when I was like around 8 or maybe a bit younger. My dad loves Mafia movies. My dad's side of the family comes from Sicily apparently a great great uncle was a big name on the island and supposedly ran a crime family. Also when it comes to the stereotypical mob names like Vinny, or Pauly, well grandfather was named Frank, he had a brother named Vincent, another brother named Paul, and another one named John and obviously people would always add a y to their name so yeah that is apparently a true stereotype. Granted they weren't in the mob but they are stereotypical common names for Italians of the time. I think because most wre Roman Catholic and named kids after saints.
When it came the cigarettes I think it was one of two things either some states would sell them higher than others like today or they would steal trucks and sell the packs for cheaper than the stores.
I think you're right on both cases when it comes to line I think it helps neutralize the smell and is acetic.
James "Jimmy the Gent" Burke, who De Niro's character was based on died back in 1996.

I just want a good script and solid acting. You probably would enjoy a film like "Sling Blade". The film won an Academy Award for Best Writing & Best Adapted Screenplay. Billy Bob Thornton's performance is brilliant. He received an Academy Award Nomination for Best Actor.👏🏽 I don't believe anyone has reacted to that film yet, which is very surprising.
I first saw Goodfellows about 15 years ago in my teens. Every time I watch this movie now though I think of the Goodfeathers from Animaniacs. Pretty bold of them to make a parody of this movie with birds in a show for kids, definitely a segment more for adults with all the Scorsese references they put in.

To answer your question, the selling of cigarettes, either stolen or loose, works because you sell them cheaper than the stores do. You profit because you’re not charging sales tax, and tax on cigarettes can be a huge % of the price tag. That’s also why it’s illegal because “forgetting” to pay sales tax isn’t looked on fondly by the authorities.
Additionally, if you stole the cigarettes to begin with, you can charge even lower because even selling at a 99% discount is still profit.

Hey Mell, the reason that shots used to "move" better and nicer is because they were shot with dolly tracks and these days, they're either steadicam shots or simply on auto rigs.
The cameras had heft and their movements were cinematic.

Obvious why this movie is continually rated as the greatest movie ever. Love that sopranos featured a lot of the same actors. More gangster flicks to consider eventually: Donnie Brasco, the departed, obviously...godfather 1 and 2....forget 3 even existed.
If you bother with Godfather 3 then just watch the recent directors cut of it. Still not a great film but an improvement over the theatrical release.

Crazy to think this is over 30 years old now. It really does feel very modern. I think it is a landmark of cinema with its style(s) and presentation, that many movies, especially biographies / crime, tried to follow since.
