Goodfellas is the other Martin Scorsese movie that also stars Robert DeNiro and Joe Pesci. Definitely one to see!
Don't forget Raging Bull
There’s also RAGING BULL (1980), the very first time that both DeNiro and Pesci were together in a Scorsese movie.
Plus DeNiro worked with Scorsese in MEAN STREETS (1973), TAXI DRIVER (1976), NEW YORK, NEW YORK (1977), and THE KING OF COMEDY (1982). All of these are definitely worth checking out.

In 70s Vegas, “powdering your nose” was slang for snorting a line.
Since a bunch of people are already suggesting you to watch Goodfellas, another good flick with De Niro I reccomend is HEAT(1995) It's a really good crime drama set in Los Angeles. It also stars Val Kilmer, Tom Sizemore, and Al Pacino to name a few.

I cannot get into The Godfather, no matter how many times I have attempted to watch, I always fall asleep before the end of the wedding scene. Goodfellas is a great film by Scorsese, starring Robert DeNiro alongside Joe Pesci. As well as Ray Liotta, R.I.P.

The whole cornfield scene is horrifying every time. Feels too real. Also, if you want me DeNiro I'd suggest Taxi Driver/Raging Bull, prob two of the ten best movies ever made.
"Raging Bull" can be tough for some people to appreciate as it moves at a slow pace at times and is filmed in Black & White. I think it helps if you know a little of Jake LaMotta's back story. Plus knowing about De Niro's dedication to the role by gaining 70 pounds during a four month break from filming to portray LaMotta in the latter years of his career. I do agree it is one of the best films ever made.

The Untouchables - DeNiro plays Capone, which is funny because he mentions him in this movie. Also has Kevin Costner and Sean Connery. Good movie.
While Martin Scorsese is most well known for his gangster films, he really covered every film genre. He's done screwball comedy, costume dramas, historical epics, even a 3D family movie.
Just about anything starring Robert DeNiro is worth watching, but make sure to watch a good selection of the serious movies before watching the comedies, it will make his performance in the comedic movies more impactful. :)
Yeah…he didn’t do anything that wasn’t deathly serious for most of his career. Decades. That’s who he was to all of us. Definitely made the impact of the comedic contrast that much more so.
But he has also made some absolute shockers too….

Jen, great reaction. 'Goodfellas' is a really good film, ones that I'd recommend in this genre are, 'Once Upon a Time in America', and 'Carlito's Way', both of these are great films and well worth reacting to.

Regarding the Casinos... Vegas super corporate now, with thousands of HD cameras covering every inch of every casino. Regarding violent crime... Vegas is ~twice as dangerous as the national average.
Today's Las Vegas sucks. I used to go there all the time 30-40 years ago. We would stay down town usually at the Golden Nugget, the drinks were always frequent and free as were most meals when playing Black Jack at a $5-10 table. At Binion's you could play single deck Black Jack were the odds are so much better. Now everything is way over priced and the freebee's are all but gone for the average player.

I was playing craps at Harrahs in Vegas and one of the dealers turned out to be the poker dealer in the scene where the cowboy had his feet on the table. He showed me the picture of him at the table during filming and yep it was him. 😮 He said he was getting a check up until a few years ago because he said a line in the movie and they didn’t cut it. Pretty cool meeting him.

I did mean to send this comment so soon but, this story ends in my hometown of San Diego. If you fly to Vegas for an extended stay, find accommodation on the east side. It's called the Boulder Strip along Boulder Hwy or US 95. Then drive to the LV Strip or to the Downtown LV Fremont Street Experience. The two big LV Strip attractions are the STRAT Tower and the fountains in front of Bellagio. People are right to recommend GOODFELLAS (1990) which originally teamed up this director with his same cowriter and with Frank Vincent as well as Robert De Niro and Joe Pesci. You see Vincent as Frank Marino in the freeze frame narration as he lies to Remo Gagi back in Kansas City. Veteran character actor L. Q. Jones played the county commissioner whose dumb nephew got fired as a manager. Jones was in his mid 90s when he passed in July. Also, both Ray Liotta & Paul Sorvino who played in GOODFELLAS passed this year too. In CASINO, Billy Sherbert is played by Don Rickles who performed a lot in Vegas on stage and on stages everywhere with his own brand of humor. Look up his movies and especially his appearances on TV roasts & talk show appearances. You'll find them funny. They're all over RUclips. Rickles & Vincent both passed in 2017. You stay classy, Jen.

Maybe someone else has already mentioned it, but at 1:39 the white haired guy in the counting room is Martin Scorsese himself, making a cameo in his own movies. Also the Kansas City mobster running the place they all meet, the lady being annoyed by his cursing is Catherine Scorsese, Martins mother. Small little details, not all that important, but still.
As we speak there is a very large reservoir just outside of Vegas that is going dry and there have been barrels with bodies that were dumped there back in the 70s that are being discovered.
Yes, this stuff happened back in those days. The Mob was absolutely a presence in Vegas for a long time and they had heavy influence in the development of the town. But its not like that anymore. This movie is about the guys who were kind of the last of that era.
A good film adaptation of the "Vegas Skim", in the 1970's. The story of the casinos ("Tangiers" in the movie), the Stardust, Tropicana, and other 70's Vegas casinos, that took "Sklm money", from the casinos and sent the money to crime families in Chicago, Kansas City, Milwaukee and Cleveland. Based on the excellent book- "Casino."
The character Of Nicky is based on Tony Spilotro. Peci looked so much like the real character that dealers nearly fainted.
In my opinion the best DeNiro film is Taxi Driver, also directed by Scorcese. It’s very heavy and complex, but a very young Robert DeNiro gives an absolutely captivating performance.
MIdnight Run with Robert DeNiro is a very entertaining movie, one of his first forays into comedy. But he still plays a tough guy.
DeNiro starred with Robin Williams in "Awakenings".

Two really solid Robert De Niro films are Midnight Run (1988 - action/comedy/buddy/road movie) and also King of Comedy (1982 - black comedy about an obsessive, aspiring stand-up comedian).
Midnight Run is from the director of 'Beverly Hills Cop' and King of Comedy is from Martin Scorsese.
My Low Key MVP for this movie was Oscar Goodman, former mayor of Las Vegas, who played himself back when he was a lawyer for the mob.
I grew up in Vegas it will always be home to me I was around while they were making this movie

Even though I've seen the movie before, it was nice seeing the reaction and thoughts from someone who is watching it for the first time. A new perspective.
Goodfellas, The Departed, Raging Bull, and Taxi Driver are my favorite Martin Scorsese films. All superb! This is solid too.

This movie is loosely based on true events involving Frank “Lefty” Rosenthal (Ace), his wife Geri McGee (Ginger), and Tony “The Ant” Spilotro (Nicky). Frank secretly ran several Vegas casinos, the most famous being the Stardust. The thing about the metal plate in the car saving Rosenthal from a car bomb is 100% true, along with many other aspects of the plot.
Taxi Driver with DeNiro is a must see!
The Score. DeNiro, Edward Norton, Marlon Brando (2000), well written, well acted heist drama.
Midnight Run (1988) action comedy Robert De Niro
For more De Niro movies, I'd recommend Taxi Driver and King of Comedy. In a strange kind of way I think those two movies are a matched set. Raging Bull and The Deer Hunter are also two more good ones from that era. Meet the Parents is a guilty pleasure for me. De Niro in a mainstream comedy? It's a weird fit but that just makes it funnier to me. I prefer Goodfellas to Casino, mainly because I kind of like some of the characters in Goodfellas, but the ones in Casino couldn't die fast enough for me.
Joe Pesci’s character was based in the real life mobster Anthony “The Ant” Spilotro.
Robert DeNiro’s character was based off of: Frank “Lefty” Rosenthal who was a inside gambler who had the brains and knew everything about casino
Great acting by all involved in this film.
My favorite detail about this movie is the lighting. Basic film lighting involves three lights: Key lights, fill lights, and back lights. Key lights are the main source of light and usually the brightest, fill lights are dimmer lights that remove the harsh shadows from the key lights, and back lights shine behind the subject to separate them from the background. What Scorsese did here is cranked up the back lights super bright and used them from above, creating this glowing angelic halo around the characters. It gives the film a very dreamlike quality.
When Sharon Stone says "powder my nose", I think she means with cocaine!

My favourite De Niro moves are Midnight Run, The Untouchables and Goodfellas.
Glad you like more classics like this and more than any other movie in this genre I can recommend "A Bronx Tale" (1993), which is also based on true events and in which Robert De Niro not only stars, but in which he is also the producer.

They Really did Her Wrong She had a Daughter with Lester Diamond (Lenny Marmour) that wasn’t mentioned in the film and he was her high school sweetheart and first love and not her Pimp and her relationship with Ace was much less one sided then it’s portrayed in the movie and was more of a Business Transaction to her.
At Van Nuys High School, Geri was in the class of 1954. One of her classmate was Lenny Marmor, described in the book as “slick” and the “sharpest guy” at school. Marmor, who inspired the character played by James Woods in Casino, even wore sunglasses indoors.
He and Geri started going out when she was 15. In time they had a daughter. Taking the child with her, Geri moved to Las Vegas around 1960. She became a dancer at the Tropicana, earning $20,000 a year, but made much more, in the hundreds of thousands, by “hustling chips,” as Pileggi wrote, “and partying with high-rollers.”
You really can't go wrong with a Robert De Niro movie. Even his bad movies - not too many of those! - are redeemed by watching such a top actor. Without a doubt, his acting masterpiece is Raging Bull. (Also Scorsese, and a bonus role of a demure, retiring Joe Pesci!) Raging Bull is not a happy, "feel-good" movie, but it is excellent throughout. Didn't you watch Godfather II already? De Niro won his first Oscar for that one, playing the young adult Vito Corleone. (Two other great Scorsese/De Niro collaborations are Mean Streets and ESPECIALLY Taxi Driver. Wow, Taxi Driver is so ahead of its time. It's an unforgettable movie.) Fun fact: De Niro also does good in comedies! "Analyze This," and "Meet the Parents" are two solid choices. You mentioned "Goodfellas" and that is a must-see. It's curious because it is a movie that has only grown in esteem over time. When it was released, too many people said, "Well, it's not The Godfather." Or: "Well, it's not _______." It didn't get the credit it deserved. Over time, however, people stopped making comparisons and began to appreciate it on its own terms. Goodfellas did okay at the box office and got okay reviews, but nowadays everyone rightly sees it as the masterpiece truly is.
_Midnight Run,_ _Taxi Driver,_ and _Goodfellas_ are three great Deniro films to check out.
Oh and _The Untouchables_ is also great although Deniro's role is not as big. He stars with Kevin Costner and Sean Connery.
Fun Facts: The recent drought has lowered the water level in Lake Mead near Vegas and a number of human remains have been found stuffed in drums with bullet holes in the skulls. Thought to be the work of the real life Nicky, Tony Spilotro.

I remember seeing this in the theatre, and what impressed me most was Don Rickles performance. Extraordinary, and playing completely against type! I also well remember some audience member "hoot" loudly in the scene towards the end in the cornfield.....a rather strange reaction to the scene!!!

Jen you asked if it's legal to throw chips up in the air, the answer is no however you are allowed to give your chips away to people if you want, just to visit Las Vegas it's expensive 😆 I can't imagine living there, everytime I visit I'm grateful I'm going back home

The only thing I remember about Vegas in the early to mid 70's was my parents dropping off my brother and I at Circus Circus with a couple of rolls of quarters. Basically an enormous arcade with a circus trapeze act taking up the center 3 floors in a big atrium set up. Crazy times. Parents gambling and drinking on the first floor, kids running amok above. I was excited and terrified at the same time. If I did that today, they'd take away my kids and lock me up. Wild. Great reaction as always. Keep up the good work.
Hard to believe you hadn't seen a Scorsese film yet - and this one prior to GOODFELLAS too! :D Pretty much any/all of Marty's films (especially w/Bobby D) are essential cinema. I love how Scorsese employed comedy legends like Don Rickles, Alan King & Dick Smothers in this film in straight dramatic roles. RE: Hot Dose - mixture of battery acid and (drug of choice here) prepared for injection intravenously by an unsuspecting victim junkie. Also could be a mixture of cocaine and heroin for intravenous injection. *Nasty* Great work Jen!

I love this movie because I live in Vegas. It has such a rep here. The guy De Niro's character is based on protested the blueberry scene saying it didn't happen.
Also our former mayor, Oscar Goodman, plays himself in this movie.

De Niro and Scorsese have made many films together. One's to definitely watch is, Goodfellas, Raging Bull and Taxi driver. All brilliant. 👍
I lived in Vegas when this was filmed. And I also knew a few of the extras in the film. Jen, another great choice. Excellent drama showcasing the real Las Vegas. The home were Robert Dineros character lived, was 1 block away from were I lived at the time. Most all of the filming locations are local spots. My roommate met with Joe Pescis character in real life. (Before he was murdered. ) this film really hits home for me. Again Jen great choice!
During the poker scene, you said, "Nicky is stealing from him, that's not cool" ... Poker is the only game in a casino where your not playing against the house. It's just you, and the other players. The casino takes a small percent of the winnings.
They have a mob museum in Las Vegas. I could spend time talking to you about what really happened in real life compared to what was fictional in this movie.

Goodfellas is good. Check out A Bronx Tale as well. DeNiro plays a bus driver and is the dad of the main character. The main character is a kid who becomes friends / taken under the wing of the local mafia guy. The guy who plays the mafia guy produced the movie and it’s based on his youth.
There's really so many. You should have a De Niro pole. Hide and Seek is a good scary one, Meet the Parents is a good funny one. But I also agree with the last comment I read: You should watch a number of serious movies like this one first. In his comedies he basically parodies himself.
Wait, you haven't watched Goodfellas?? Jen, get to it. That one's a real modern classic, so is Scorsese's Raging Bull (also starring DeNiro in his greatest performance)
De Niro must watch, under rated, 40's seedy detective, suspense, horror..... Angel Heart!

If this is your first movie with De Niro, and you've already seen The Godfather, then you should definitely watch Part II.
Other great De Niro films are:
Cape Fear, Goodfellas, Raging Bull & Taxi Driver (all by this film's director Martin Scorsese - officially the world's greatest living director)
Heat is amazing, as others have said.
Awakenings (with Robin Williams, and based on a true story) is also a great little film that I don't think anyone has reacted to yet, but I think is highly underrated.
Midnight Run is another that people seem to forget about, but is really actually brilliant.
DeNiro won an Oscar for Godfather II. Fantastic movie.
Scorsese and Deniro go way back. Goodfellas and Raging Bull (boxing film) include Joe Pesci. Midnight Run is my favorite DeNiro comedy. Cape Fear is a movie remake with DrNiro. Both versions are good.

A great parody of this is MAFIA!
Joe Pesci looked and acted so much like the real Tony Spilotro that even though he was dead people who knew Spilotro did a double take when they saw Pesci in costume.
Goodfellas is an absolute must! If you think Joe Pesci is crazy in this one, you ain't seen nothing

For a great easy watch, I recommend the comedies "Analyze this" and "Analize that". Robert DeNiro is still the gangster he plays so well. Worth a watch for the fun of it.
One of my favorite Scorsese/De Niro/Pesci/et al flicks, considering that I think all their film work together are gr8. My late Auntie (whom I continually mention) appeared w/ Don Rickles on what was his very first on-screen role (a TV episode about sixty-six yrs back).
