  • Today I toured the Acura NSX factory in Marysville Ohio to understand how each NSX is painted and what makes there Andaro paint package a $6000 upgrade over base paint. This is a behind the scenes looks at the build, paint, and assembly process for the 2018 Acura NSX (and soon to be TLX). The Andaro paint package comes with 18m of paint!!!! Which is insane for a production vehicle. Hope you enjoy! -Larry

Thank you for blessing us with this video, so amazing to see technical stuff like this. On another note, and probably not as thick or durable, but I'd be interested to see how this red looks next to a soul red crystal metallic 2018 CX-5, as that is still the best looking red I've ever laid eyes on. The new mazda red also has a tinted clear.

Those numbers actually change after the paint has fully cured. The manufacturer recommends 60 days before applying any sort of wax sealant or PPF to the paint. The Andaro for example after fully cured becomes about 10mm of paint. At 18mm the paint has not cured 100% yet. Hence the example Keith had at the bottom of his white board at the beginning of the video. Nice video!

It doesn't matter how wonderful the paint is if you ultimately don't have a desirable or in demand product. I used to own an INTEGRA and then ACURA RL. I hope they make more compelling products in the future. My longtime Acura buddy bought a LOADED VW ARTEON recently and he is so happy.

Insane level of attention to details and the amount of efforts put into minimising margin of error (e.g. variance in thickness) is hard to believe. The NSX deserves its name in every aspect. Thank you for sharing this video, I know which onr I'll take when my numbers come up.

It's a very similar process. Soul Red is also base, tinted clear and clear. The difference is this NSX colour is getting a thicker layer of the tinted clear and an additional layer of clear. That adds a lot of depth.

You had to have 10 years of experience as well as a flawless record with Honda to just work on it in any category. I see they still hold it to the same standards.
Fantastic video, I truly couldn't pull my eyes away. Great job, thank you!

I could stare at the NSX all day long. I think it's one of the most beautiful cars on the road right now. I hope they don't put that diamond grill design on a future version of the NSX. It's suitable for the luxury cars, but not for a super sharp and aggressive supercar.

  • @bluewker
    @bluewker 5 лет назад

Holy crap! I just realized that with the tinted clear stage, this means that paint matches are way harder. The thickness of the tinted clear determines just how dark that panel comes out. With all other paints, you can lay on the same basecoat 1000 times but the color won't change (after 100% coverage). Then you lay on an untinted clear and you're pretty much good. Wow.

Home boy doesn't know what he's talking about. Single stage is when the top coat has the color, whether it's lacquer, strait enamel, acrylic enamel or urethane. Don't matter if it had metallic or not, there was single stage metallic. It was not a mistake,it was the technology for the time. Two stage is base coat (solid or metallic) followed by clear coat. Tri stage is a base coat with a translucent mid coat followed by a clear coat.(pearls and candies et cetera). A ground coat is using off color base that is close to the color you intend to shoot,to save material. For instance using some left over base from another car to cover primer. A guide coat is what inexperienced painters use to put over primer when block sanding :) My guess is that "e-coat" is actually known as sealer in the industry. The last step on his chart "andaro" is basically the way we been shooting custom cars for decades. So...OMG!!! they use a whole 2 quarts more clear on that tiny car for an extra $6000! lolz, and i doubt they block sand and buff the clear.

GENERAL THOUGHT : If someone said to me that they spent $6,000 over standard on factory paint, I'd normally think they had more money than sense. But watching this video, and see the capital investment that Honda has made in expensive physical plant to get the high-end job done, and the attention to time-adding detail to keep the parts protected and clean, I can now appreciate more how the $6,000 relates to the improved result. I think Honda is very wise to allow this behind the scenes, and to bring in an expert who can give an expert's view on what the quality of the result is. For other things like OEM custom parts ( always expensive ), more manufacturers should invite expert influencers into their operation so that amateurs like me better see the link between the apparent high cost to the customer, and the high cost to the manufacturer in terms of capital equipment, people and R&D costs. This is a very cool video. I hope more manufacturers invite you to do the tour (eg Bentley or Rolls to see the highest quality factory outputs )

Bloody great video larry, well done. Ive worked on tinted clearcoats on lexus and one lexus LFA in black (brand new) but to see this at acura is awesome. 17 mills is 431 microns, that is a tonne of paint but half a mil is 12.7 so two to three applications of compound with microfibre or wool to stay within the safe limit just without effecting the uv inhibitors. Looking forward to next weeks episode.

I'm a little surprised for that price. By comparison, if I look at the factory finish on an Aston Martin or a good aftermarket paint job, there is no discernible orange peel left.

Well done! I'd totally go for the Andaro. Sadley, I never saw a 2nd gen NSX on the road yet. Imagine how rare an Andaro NSX in Colorado would be!

I first thought the TLX PMC edition was overpriced until I saw this video. Now I think it's worth every penny.

very interesting on the importance paid to the painting and finishing process. Would be interesting to see how other high end auto makers apply their paint

Wow, that's some crazy paint! Now imagine getting into a small accident and having to replicate/blend that for the repair.

Amazing. They should sell 1 or 2 vehicles per month with such great attention to detail.

This is no joke. RE: the TLX and MDX, I can't even imagine getting body work if you got into an accident down the road. OMG!

Andaro paint package is a candy paint job with extra clear coat. Pretty slick for an OEM option.

Do other manufacturers use tinted clear? I've been seeing some really gorgeous reds on relatively low end cars lately.

Mazda's new red looks pretty amazing, I'd be interested in hearing which ones you're referring to

I do believe most manufacturers have premium paints available as an extra cost option with an extra layer. I've noticed the more depth in some premium reds and blues. Paint code RR on my car is an example.

This is my fav video you’ve ever done. I would love a nsx. I don’t get why they aren’t selling better.

Double thumbs up Larry. Amazing and great video of process. I like how you take it apart and explain what really going on. I saw you put your hands I pocket, make sure you did not touch something. Looks like you had a lot of respect for what they were doing. S

Very very cool. I have a whole new appreciation for the NSX now. I wonder if they'd allow a US customer to opt for Honda badging if they happened to be there during that part of the process.

yes the paint is thicker in the Red because its got the tinted clear that is way thicker than base coat then it is clear coated and it is flow coated after that. they dont do that with the white cars but is there any other color that they do that with?
