"Pocket full of posies" could also refer to the fact that Plague Doctors would stuff the 'beak' of their masks with posies or other strongly scented flowers to avoid the smell of rotting flesh and death.
No In the Middle Ages they thought diseases like the plague was spread through bad smells. Doctors stuffed the beaks and ordinary people wrapped flowers in tissues and breathed through them.
boonski it actually had nothing to do with any outbreak. The words to that particular nursery rhyme were written a couple of centuries before the plague even occurred. There are documents with the lyrics in them that predate it.
The song "Alouette" is about plucking feathers off various parts of the bird such as the eyes, the beak, the neck, legs, tail, head, back and event the wings. How disturbing is that?!?
Why wasn't the Lizzie Borden song on here "Lizzie Borden took an axe, gave her mother forty whacks, once see what she had done, gave her father forty-one
One, Two, Freddy's coming for you Three, Four, Gotta lock the doors Five, Six, pick your sticks Seven, Eight, gonna stay up late Nine, Ten, Never sleep again (Can you guess where that's from?)
In preschool,we legit sung a nursery rhyme about Lizzie Borden "Lizzie Borden took an axe! Gave her mamma forty whacks! When she realized what she'd done, gave her daddy forty one!" How dark is that?
Fun fact, in England they have made emergency plans for when the Queen dies and "London Bridge has fallen" is a code the authorities will use to communicate this event in the early stages. Obviously as she is a lizard she will live forever though.....
I'd like the add the Jumprope rhyme "I had a little Bird, It's Name was Enza, I opened the Window and In Flew Enza" its a reference to the 1918 Spanish flu Epidemic that killed over 10,000 People in about six months.
it's okay because the kids are too dumb to know while they're still kids anyway. plus it makes for a pretty awesome reveal when they grow up. dark humour is what makes reality bearable.
Those songs aren't for humour. Those songs were made for mostly facts and to make fun of certain kinds of people like jews and slaves. Kids are not stupid just cause they don't know the dark meanings of fun sounding songs, most adults wouldn't even know unless they were told! But again, either way, no child is dumb, they aren't developed. That doesn't make them stupid. And no it doesn't make for an "awesome reveal" I'd feel horrified if I celebrated the tourture and death of others. I like dark humour but those songs aren't funny nor humerous.
I remembered once upon a time I read an article by horror writer Stephen King who mentioned something about fairy tales being scary: he was right. This lullaby break down by Matt is nothing short of awesome to a T. Fairy tales and lullabies are NOT and have never been a part of my being, ever.
MrTantraMan Yeah, my late Dad had refused to sing me the traditional lullaby's or tell me the regular fairy tails. He even told me why. So he made up sweet ones from his childhood and real life bed time stories as I did with my 2, daughters, only I drew pictures while telling the stories or singing the lullaby's lol!
What about The crooked man 'there was a crooked man who bought a crooked house he bought a crooked cat which caught a crooked mouse and they all lived together in a little crooked house
L. Medrano actually if you watch the conjuring 2 the song goes “there was a crooked man who walked a crooked mile. He found a crooked sixpence piece upon a crooked stile. He bought a crooked cat who caught a crooked mouse and they all lived together in a little crooked house” my whole family forbids this song to be sung because I was on a walk with my parents and began singing this song on a path about a mile or 2 long and I had never heard this song before in my life. So overall the crooked man is a really weird song with a creepy background saying if you should recite the song/ poem (fully) out loud he should kill all that live on you premises. So lesson don’t sing it
ya know I was kind of expecting "Old Macdonald had a farm" to have some dark story behind it, mostly since the song always includes "had" in each verse. Like yeah, he had all those things but ended up losing everything afterwards.
what I love, which is similar to #7, is that "Bless you" when someone sneezes has come from during the black death. during the pandemic, people who sneezed would be told "God Bless You" in fear that the person has caught the plague
Sad I knew the origins of the songs I knew, but I have never heard 3 of the songs. Is the reason because I know the origins is because I'm into dark things and learning?
Youre not alone. Anyone who watch Supernatural and American Horror Story can be left a little dark besides the stuff we grew up with and learned later on lol.
Rock a Bye Baby never had me questioned it till that one Simpsons episode where Maggie imagined herself falling out of a tree as Marge sang her that song
Those were fantastic Matt!! A couple of them I knew the true song. Awesome video as always!! And, I just have to say that when you do your creepy voice it makes you even sexier than you already are!! Your Fan - Carl
It is based on the French revolution, Where Jack and Jill represent Louis XVI of France, who was deposed and beheaded in 1793 (lost his crown), and his Queen Marie Antoinette (who came tumbling after). But some says the rhyme is made early before events.
Great list Matt. I knew about most of these stories already. I wish you could've put "she'll be coming round the mountain". That would've been a great fit among these choices.

The American version doesn't have dust in it. I didn't know what Matt was talking about when he said dust to dust because I've only heard ashes ashes we all fall down.
A version of ring around the roses I heard/sang as a child went like this: “ring around the roses, a pocket full of posies, atishoo, atishoo, we all fall down.” I didn’t come across the “ashes, ashes” version until I was much older (the “atishoo, atishoo” line references the sneezing which was another symptom of the plague). Would be interested to hear if anyone else grew up with this version: after we fell down, we would say “down at the bottom of the deep blue sea, catching fish for daddy’s tea, a one, two three” whilst tapping our toes and then come up again. I grew up in the Aberdeenshire area of Scotland (which is a fishing area in some cities), so would also be interested to hear if anyone else did this second part as well.

I need More of these true and dark orgins!! Like is there on about “Hush little baby”? Or humpty Dumpty I heard that Hush little baby is about some dark twisted up song to put kids asleep while their parents abandoned them or kill them. Love u Mat!
The song is about a friar who has overslept and is urged to wake up and sound the bell for the matins, the midnight or very early morning prayers for which a monk would be expected to wake. The original was frere Blaise changed to Jaques for obvious reasons.
For ring around the rosies. The two versions I know are the one you mentioned with “we all fall down” but I also know one that states “we all fall dead” which is less than subtle.

No In the Middle Ages they thought diseases like the plague was spread through bad smells. Doctors stuffed the beaks and ordinary people wrapped flowers in tissues and breathed through them.
Alan I no they didn’t realise until the Renaissance period which was the 19th century
They believed miasma (bad smells) caused the plague
boonski it actually had nothing to do with any outbreak. The words to that particular nursery rhyme were written a couple of centuries before the plague even occurred. There are documents with the lyrics in them that predate it.

Oh? What are the lyrics? I know the song but I am not familiar with the lyrics
Wow! I didn't know that. I never song the whole song because I didn't know it nor what the words meant in English.
I know why is it only the english children songs that are only dark
When if we look at the translation of the French song that it's just as dark

Yeah I have this app called plague inc and when you play the black death the song will come randomly and is sung by children really creepily!
Same
Ryann Dunn Same its so creepy even without the origin
Me too
In England we call it "Ring-a ring-a roses" but it's still got the same dark origin.
One, Two, Freddy's coming for you
Three, Four, Gotta lock the doors
Five, Six, pick your sticks
Seven, Eight, gonna stay up late
Nine, Ten, Never sleep again

In preschool,we legit sung a nursery rhyme about Lizzie Borden
"Lizzie Borden took an axe! Gave her mamma forty whacks! When she realized what she'd done, gave her daddy forty one!"
How dark is that?
she stabbed her mama 40 times and didn’t wanna get caught so she stabbed her dad 41 times killing them both
The fact that the song is already dark, it doesn’t need any secret meanings because the meaning is right there
although it contains several factual errors@@funtimerhikes2330
Oh my dear heavens help us 😱 I hope you did not have nightmares
I always thought "Rock a Bye Baby" and "London Bridge is Falling Down" were kind of wrong to sing to kids, anyway.
Beth Sloan yeah
Yeah.......
i like the song
Beth Sloan you don't know what happened of the song "London Bridge is falling down,, in our school 😵
Fun fact, in England they have made emergency plans for when the Queen dies and "London Bridge has fallen" is a code the authorities will use to communicate this event in the early stages.

Also the lizzie Borden rhyme. I actually think that there might be enough for a second video.

You should read the Original "Grimm's Fairy tales" Those are very dark, a lot of Death, that's why the Victorians cleaned them up!
What about The crooked man 'there was a crooked man who bought a crooked house he bought a crooked cat which caught a crooked mouse and they all lived together in a little crooked house

what I love, which is similar to #7, is that "Bless you" when someone sneezes has come from during the black death.
