It always bugs me in the original 'Cinderella', only the step-sisters get punished, but not the stepmother. The stepmother is more cruel than her own daughters, is just as mean to them as she is towards Cinderella, and is the one forcing her daughters to be gold-diggers just like her; Yet she gets off scott-free, while her daughters become blind & limp!?!?!?
I believe in one of the versions she's made to dance over open flames (until she dies) in front of Cinderella and the Prince after they're married. At least that's the version I read!
Love the video Matthew. But--that is not Mulan's original story! The version you recounted comes from a more recent (well, 1675) source known as "Sui Tang Romance", written by Chu Renhou. Chu elaborated and dramatized the original poem (The Ballad of Hua Mulan), which predates his adaptation by over 1,000 years! In the original poem, she is welcomed home by her entire family. She dresses as a woman to shock and awe her comrades, and that's the end of the tale.
Dollightful plus it wouldn’t have made sense with the mother getting remarried. If women became widows, they were not allowed to remarry no matter how old they were, during that time.
Well that is one version, but the version he’s talking about is one as well. There are several versions of her story, but most of them were never written down, or simply lost.
Yup. Also true facts, H.C. Andersen was a closeted bisexual and his life was wild. A lot of his stories were influenced by his own personal struggles with love and fitting into society in general.
I was told the original stories as a child. That explains a lot. Also they don't even seem as creepy when you're young. I didn't really understand how horrible the things happening were.
The original little mermaid story at least had a happy ending because after she dies she is given a soul for not killing the prince and becomes the princes daughter
No nó no. She becomes a "daughter of the air" and has a chance of earning a soul after 300 years. Kicker is that everytime a child laughs, one day is taken away and everytime a child cries, a day is added. And knowing that kids can be emotional little monsters at times.... That's an endless limbo!
Children can take so much more than adults might think. Those stories, exactly those stories, were told to all of my peers in kindergarten and I think we've survived every nap without wetting our pants over it.
I've actually read the original versions of some of these fairytales as a student in high school. I prefer them and the way the movie Into the Woods depicts them way more than the way Disney has done because I feel like they made the fairytales a little too kid friendly and have unrealistic happy endings as not all fairytales end happily.
If there will be a part 2, here's 10 ideas for it: Beauty and the Beast Aladdin Pinocchio Rapunzel The Three Little Pigs Red Riding Hood The Jungle Book The Fox and the Hound Rumpeltstiltskin & Goldilocks and the Three Bears.
Prince of Cinderella: I found my princess! Friend: Really?! Prince: No, there was alot of people with size 7 Friend: do you know what she looks like!? Prince: Oh no, man. I don't know
Yes it was, all because of the author J.M. Barrie was completely scarred from the loss of his brother and like Matthew said, "pretending to be someone else."
I already read those versions back when i was 8, i always was into dark story's. And in school we learned about fairytailes, our teacher had the books lying in a bookshelf acceseble for us. Though, i'm not sure whether she read them herself, because she didn't tell us about the dark versions.
Top ten stories that Disney ripped off and still somehow owns the rights of the characters I don’t care what anyone says more than half of those stories are brothers grimm books
They own there rendition of the characters not the actual characters themselves. If you draw fan art of cinderella in a her blue dress and she looks like disneys u can claim fan art but the original cinderella had redish blond and brown like dirty dishwater blondish red hair and she was plain looking.
The Little Mermaid actually has a happy ending, where the mermaid becomes foam but in her sacrifice saves the other mermaids by allowing them into heaven.
Riot Breaker I have heard that no one comes to heaven (since they are not humans), but that sea fairies of sorts takes to her sacrifies and make her one of them. (So she doesn't technically die~) ^^
Just a crazy coincidence about The Princess and the Frog is that Princess Tiana's original name was Anika, which just happens to also be the name of her voice actor.
Leoniepard and Friendz Snow White can you eat this poor apple? Does it have poison in it? No one cares about that, just eat it! Does. It. Have. Poison. Errr uh nope (pulls out a microscope) A-ha! I have come to the conclusion that you are lying, old woman Now get out! Eat this first! Nope, I’m full Bite me! (tricks the old woman into eating the apple instead) Uh! Help! Help me please! HELP! I’m dying! You cruel woman! Give me another apple! This is what you get for trying to kill me...
The funniest thing was that I knew all except one of these original stories, especially Mulan. I read the original book about her. Awesome scary video Matt! Keep up the good work!
I love Hunchback of Notre Dame. So much better than the Disney version. They left out Gringoire, Jehan, Fleur de Lys, how dispicable Phoebus is, and also that Frollo actually is the archdeacon himself.
Oh in the Hunchback of Notre Dame, you shouldn't forget that Frollo would spare Esmereldas life if she married frollo. She would have rather be killed than marry frollo. Also her and pheobus were together and frollo stabbed pheobus. That was one of the reasons Esmeralda was arrested. When she was in the noose, pheobus WATCHED her get in the noose and didn't care about her being executed. I got to be in the musical for my community theatre and the musical is a mix of Disney and the book. It is very disturbing and creepy and weird but an interesting story to be in your library.
I have 1 The little red riding hood tale is actually about a story of a girl who wore a red hood and carried a basket and a wolf eating the grandmother
Mr Jeff It's because everyone is a sheep and follows the first person that said it. Just like how you see the same comments about the burger king fungus, or someone leaving pornhub to watch the video. No one has an original thought these days.
Everybody leaves off the very end of The Little Mermaid. The mermaid, because she was willing to sacrifice herself for the prince's happiness, is made into an angel that guards children.
the Hunchback of Notre Dame off-Broadway musical is slightly closer to the original tale, in that pretty much everyone dies at the end, but there are still lots of elements from the disney film. it's honestly amazing, so go listen to it!
Amazing choice of topic Matt ❤ Creating somewhat similar content as yours Matthew I must say that your choice of topics and consistency in always blowing our minds is why you are one of the best in the game ❤
Infinite Curiosity Stop it. You do this on every one of your videos. You leave a comment completely unrelated to the video that showers praise on Matt in order to get pinned. It’s annoying.
She became a human because 1. She loved the prince 2. If she married him she would have become a human which would give her a soul. The story saying that when mermaids died they became kinda like angels and would have to wait a certain time kinda like the catholic idea of whats it called, if you saw a chold being good your term was shortened by a day, if you saw a child being bad your term was lengthened by a year. It was kinda weird.
I personally find these children stories more interesting than the family friendly version Disney came out with. Btw, speaking of the Little Mermaid, there is a Japanese anime version of the movie which is closer to the original novel.
Guess you'll just live the rest of your life in deep depression never being happy because your comment was never replied to by Matthew. R.I.P Joe Redfield's happiness
and you get somekinda ego boost if he replies? just wondering not trying to diss. i just dont understand you ppl who comment something like this, or "if *vid maker* likes this, i'll be forever happy!".

Nightmares? Why? It's not even really that scary that you would have nightmares. (Not trying insulting Matthew) What is so scary about this video that it causes nightmares? The scariest part I can find is just, well, Matthew being "scary" with his voice and stuff. But that's not enough to cause nightmares. There's no horrifying imagery, just basically stories. :/
Wow! I knew some of these tales in the original form, but can't recall where I heard them. I'm new to your channel and think your brilliant, and entertaining. Thank you, for brightening up my dark evenings in Scotland.
me too ! a children's book too ! i actually read the original story while i was really young before even watching the disney version ... so yeah my childhood was nice

I don't understand why Disney decided to make Pocahontas and The Hunchback of Notre Dame. I can see the other ones, but those two are SO dark (and Pocahontas is a true story, so the movie is actually kinda disrespectful) that I don't see how they got the inspiration to make a kids' movie out of them XD. And the characters are so warped too... they made John Smith too sympathetic. Mulan and The Little Mermaid are just really sad ;.; I think Ponyo kinda does a better job of staying true to the story despite being very light-hearted. Ponyo's mother says she would turn into seafoam if Sasuke doesn't really love her, which wasn't mentioned at all in The Little Mermaid.

I believe that the reason those stories are so dark is that way back in the day they weren't meant for kids but adults
