Exactly. I love everything about the Witcher universe, not just Geralt. I do love Geralt the most, but I am happy with him getting his happy ending and moving on.
Geralt is retired in his vineyard. All his friends have their story endings. There's absolutely no one to call him back to the adventure.
What would be awesome is a prequel, where witcher schools aren't well established, magic is even more wild and peasants live in fear of witchers, instead of prejudice.

Triss is doing politics in kovir which would make for a very boring WITCHER game, dandelion has seemingly settled down, Zoltan is hanging out with dandelion, Lambert is doing his own thing with Keira and geralt is alot of things but he's not a 3rd wheel, ciri is either empress in training or a witcheress (which is possibly what game 4 is about) And 1 way or the other the war is done. Most of geralts friends and done and geralt himself has retired, let the dude rest

a myriad of reflective surfaces like mirrors and windows, third person cut scenes, etc.
But again, they lied about all that.
It's funny, they actually had a decent blueprint of how to do this. Deus Ex Human Revolution did it right. When you're sneaking about, when you're shooting enemies, when you're in the cut scenes, or when you use all that tech upgrades - you can pretty much always see your character.
What the hell is the point in augmentations if you can't see them work? No point. That's the answer.

They will. Like all media for a "modern audience" they need to demasculate and humiliate the white legacy character to show what a perfect Mary Sue the new lead is. It will be a woman and she will easily best Geralt in single combat because it's all cliche nonsense.
Geralt already had 3 endings. Lady of the lake, Witcher 3 and Blood and Wine. I think his character deserves to have an ending. Even Sapkowski is only doing prequels from now on.
Man, how can anyone want another Geralt game after that terrific ending of blood and wine, even the final boss was probably my favourite in the entire game
When RDR2 was in development, many RDR1 fans were disappointed that John Marston is not going to be the main protagonists, but then we got Arthur.
I am in total confidence that CDPR might be able to give a protagonists who might top Geralt. Their work with V in CP2077 was amazing and they might go good with new protagonist as well.
But I actually hope Witcher 4 should be a prequel to Witcher 1. Let the setting be a timeline which had the highest influx of monsters and the Kingdoms actually be in worry about monsters than politics.
Yeah I understand what Ur saying but not everybody is Rockstar and produce new characters the fans resides with, Arthur was so much more loved bcoz of his character so how much the character impacted us with what little time we had with arthur

There's a difference, John Marston was the main character in a game. Geralt has been the main character for 30 years, across all the games, all the books, and the show.

I think this is the right choice, if we take Blood and Wine as the final ending, Geralt’s story is done, he, against all odds, got his happy ending. He can still be in the new game but him not being a protagonist works fine
For me it's clear as day that it goes like this. Of course it is kinda sad to see Geralt go, but this opens door for so much more. They kinda have more free hands lore wise than with geralt.

I loved the Witcher games, but Geralt’s story is wrapped up. I’m all for a new main character. My only worry is that it ends up being set too soon after Geralt’s story and we get a version of what Boruto was like for Naruto. I hope it’s set way way after the events of Geralt’s story.
I do love Geralt as the protagonist, but truthfully a customizable Witcher means way more options in story direction and roleplay. I'm cautiously optimistic.

I see many want to play as ciri, i don’t. I think her plot in tw3 was perfect and it wouldnt be good gameplay to have the powers she posseses. You would want a real witcher with signs and witcher sense and all that comes with it!
I was reminded that Ciri isn't officially a Witcher. She was brought up in and does the monster hunting but isn't really one. Kind of like Ray Liotta wasn't a member of the Mafia in Goodfellas.
Red dead redemption was a great example of steering away from the already developed protagonist, and still coming out on top, all while keeping the original close by and even giving the opportunity to play as them again

I mean I can’t possibly see Geralt returning. He did everything he had all the adventures and depending on your choices helped end a war saved Ciri and accepted she is grown up and has to go her own way so no more running after her. Fought the devil got an estate, if he looses Ciri he dies only way he might have new reasons to adventure and be the main protagonist is as emperor Ciri is in trouble with factions and assassinations but I can’t see Geralt dipping his toes is that after Witcher 2 he would call on Yen and only do what yen needed help with. So I am pretty happy making my own Witcher with his choices instead of thinking what would Geralt do
some people are just too dramatic man, like we've had geralt as a protagonist for 3 games now we can do without him for a while. I'd vouch for a remake of the first 2 games tho, cause I haven't played them and they look horrible lol
It makes sense given the ending of the DLC of witcher 3 (trying not to spoil it). I'm sure he'd make a cameo or even be some sort of companion or reoccurring character throughout the game.
It's completely up in the air but the game director did say in an article a while back that it's certainly in the conversation with the other devs and writers. Likely a cameo at least
I kinda hope they lean into the RPG side and have our character be our own - a new Witcher, allow us our own character development etc.
Honestly even if we don't get to create a character I hope they lean into all the other rpg elements more if anything, that way we still have some creative freedom in building the MC in our own way and maybe some more dialogue consequences and all that.
As long as they can make the characters and story as compelling as Geralt's then I don't mind.
People complaining about Geralt not being in Witcher 4 clearly aren't true fans because if you played Hearts of Stone it puts a pretty solid end to Geralt's story, to quote a comment I've read "Witcher's never die in their bed but Geralt will be the first".
Hearts of Stone doesn't have an ending for Geralt.

I'm holding on to one theory xletalis had a long time ago that the next Witcher game will mainly take place in Nilfgaard and it'll have a vampire theme. Regis mentions something along the lines of moving there because people in Nilfgaard hardly believe monsters exist anymore because it's so modern compared to the north a higher vampire would just blend in to the crowd and living a good quiet life. Also since Eskil was studying a vampire beast at kaer morhen, of all the monsters on the continent the witchers are familiar with the biology of most, except vampires and vampire beasts.
Since the Witcher pendant in the snow is a cat, that might play into our PC witcher being a formero or active assassin from the cat school in nilfgaard on a job or doing odd jobs befitting of a mutant detective finding out about a significant vampire population hiding all throughout
Either way i'm excited, the world of the witcher is an interesting dark fantasy and cdpr have done a bang up job with it so far
I think the right way to go for The Witcher 4 is having a character creator and it's set in a different time period than the previous games.
Idk the biggest part of the Witcher games is the story, with set characters and voice lines. Idk I haven’t played Cyberpunk so maybe they pulled it off there or they can do it well like Mass Effect too

a fresh start is definitely best for the series, a lot of people like myself played witcher 3 without playing the other games and it felt like i was missing quite a bit of story but definitely hyped to learn more about the world w a new character
Geralts trilogy ended perfectly with the Blood and Wine DLC. The only thing they should do with W3 is remaster it with updated graphics and small quality of life tweaks. Like what they did with Deadspace 1.
I do not mind that Geralt is not the main character of the story in Witcher 4. His story is told and I am satisfied. I mean I want him IN the story going forward, but I do not want play as him. Well.. I would love to, but I don't mind playing another character. The only important part is that this is actually a WITCHER we're playing as. Meaning I will not want to play as Ciri.
If it's Witcher 4, it's a Witcher we play as. As a male character. I only bring that up because it's a fucking rally to destroy established lore of existing IPs - just look at Warhammer.
If we were talking about CDPR directly after The Witcher 3 I'd have to agree. But considering corporate decisions they've been making, who they've been hiring, and certain decisions made with Phantom Liberty, my hopes are not high.
This is by the Polish team though so hopefully it's just the American branch most of the problems lie with.

All their games so far were made by the same team.
There is an American branch that just opened in Boston, but they never made any games and it's staffed by mostly Polish devs ( at least so far), most of them vets of the studio.
They been mentioned back in 2015 that the 3 would be the end of Geralt being the protagonist. The Witcher series will be continued through ciri moving forward. 3 was the precursor to her taking over the main stage.
Yes I've been wanting this for awhile I like the Witcher games but I always wanted to create my Witcher I didn't really want to play as geralt as he was a set character with his own dreams, ambitions etc.
His ending at the end of B&W is brilliant and he got his happily ever after, with all his friends and loved ones around him. Let Geralt be the first Witcher to die lying on a cozy bed at this point.

I mean it seemed like the endings of TW3 all pointed to him either retiring if you got the good endings or he dies if you got the bad endings. Idk it seemed logical we’d get either Ciri or a new character this time.
I love Geralt, one of my favorite game protagonists. I'm hoping CDPR makes a peak Witcher school era prequel. Think of how much story flexibility that would give them.
Geralt story ended perfectly. They did hint at recreating witchers again with way less risks at Kaer Morhen. So i imagine a customer character or a citri story line

I wouldn't like to see ciri honestly, I feel like her story is done too, especially with how high stakes the TW3 story was. Creating a custom witcher would be dream come true for most fans I think.

@sup3rhyp3r56 if this is a genuine question. When I refer to "modern," it kind of refers to the buzzword developers, marketing, or PR uses when describing a movie or game that really tends to have terrible writing.
The character is not written well but rather is expected to be liked because of a certain feature (sex, religion, skin color and so forth) but the overall individual or story is not good (granted this is subjective but I'm sure you come across movies or games where they'll market a character as a new hip modern character for today's audience and....it just ends up being terrible.)
This is not to say that a character has to look or act a certain way but rather they have to be written well overall. I can give you examples of both cases if need be.
As I said, when I hear "modern" being used, it tells me the people making the very movie or game have no idea why people should like this....
I'm glad for this. One, I'm happy where Geralt ended his adventure in Toussaint. Two, we've met plenty of witchers from different schools. Venturing beyond the wolf is definitely warranted if it means moving away from Novigrad, as well. Three, introducint a new school could definitely excuse making new combat systems and disciplines that were previously unavailable because they stray too far from Vesemir's teachings. And four, I hate prequels. I liked RDR2, sure, but I generally prefer exploring the world from after the first time we did it, not before it became what we knew.
I love Geralt, he's a perfect protagonist, but I feel like he told his story.

Have we not already known this? Geralt's got a good few arcs with not really any loose ends. Him showing up is cool if that happens. I think it is fine - especially if it is Ciri, but I don't mind any character, original or not, as long as the narrative is written well.

New character is the way forward. I hope multiple franchises do this actually. God of War, TLOU, Uncharted, and many more.
A prequel where you play as Vezemir and with that one old lady that sells the viper armor
Geralt's Story is finished, simple as that. If people can't come to terms with that, sucks for them. The Game will sell like hot potatoes either way for CDPR. That being said, if it will be as good as Witcher 3 or on a similar level remains to be seen.
I really hope Ciri will be the Main Protagonist, and the Story continues after the last Book. I read the Witcher after playing the Games, and there is a very Open Ending and a lot of Questions, which i think would be the ideal Setup for a new Story.
Netflix ran the series into the ground partly due to them pushing Geralt to the sidelines more and more.
A part of me feels that may influence how people see this decision. It could very well burn people's desire to play as anyone other than him.
The problem is that the Netflix series are supposed to be an adaptation of the books which tell Geralt's story. We already had 3 games with Geralt as a protagonist, CDPR did a pretty good job honouring the character in these three games, but it's time for him to rest. There's simply not much to be done with him story-wise at this point.

I am a little bummed we won't be the White Wolf but he does deserve the rest, he's earned it. He still needs to be part of the story imo honestly, he's so loved that I would feel betrayed if he was completely absent. Maybe we'll be able to control him for brief amounts of time or maybe I'll just have to play 3 alongside 4
I PERSONALLY THINK they should go the route of Mad Max Fury Road.
Let me Explain: In Fury Road Max is more of a Secondary Character, but not totally glossed over, he is more like a Ghost helping Furiosa who is more of the Primary Protagonist.
Since we know a lot of Max, we spend more time getting to know Furiosa.
They should do that with Witcher 4. Where We, the Players, are our own Customizable PRIMARY Character with our own Background, Gender, Witcher School, and Skills.
While Geralt takes on the role of Mad Max, where he is more is a Secondary Character and helps us in the Main Quest and a few times we play as him (same as Ciri's Quests in 3)
Hell they could do what Mad Max Fury Road did and have Geralt say a few lines and be more of a Legendary Silent Character who only talks when it's necessary like Max in Fury Road or Snake in MGS5 or Kratos in God Of War 2018 to show how badass Geralt is even tho he says a Few Words.
(Plus him being silent most of the time and talking when necessary is more accurate to the books)

If they add character creator then it's fucked beyond repair. The witcher is a story rich universe, it requires a character with depth, backstory and an emotional connection.
Geralt had a good cap on his story. I trust CDPR to respect the lore as they always have done in all their projects. Let’s face it the games are fanfiction and they could have done literally anything with the series but they stayed true. Same story with Cyberpunk. I think we’re in good hands as long as they give up the crunch on the devs and actually play test their product properly
In my mind we play as Ciri in witcher 4 going on her own adventure, just imagine having a full skill tree of just her powers fot us to use.
Wirh the studio latest caracter being a femel (V in cyberpunk 2077) is safe to say the the Wicher 4 may have Ciri as a protagonist and it won't be hard as she was playebel befor
As much as I love Geralt it would be cool if it was a character creator, and he was a mentor that you met.
I trust they will make a character just as likeable and cool as Geralt. The one company I have complete faith in.
Some would point to cyberpunk as a counter evidence but I think it’s a perfect example. V the protagonist of the game is faceless and I think he/she is brilliantly written and loveable

I would really like a "Witcher manager" game, where you assume the position of a Witcher tasked with training and sending out young Witchers, managing them season by season, taking care of and building up Kair Morhen whilst organising hunts and contacts with other Witcher schools, sorcerer chapters, royal courts etc. in order to ensure the growth and safety of the school.
There could even be a story mode where you start out as a young novice, responsible for teaching new recruits. As they go out on the path, problems begin to arise at home and abroad, creating pressure and increased persecution of the witchers. Political ambitions in certain witcher schools, and troubles in various kingdoms leads to difficult decisions, where your witchers may find themselves banished and unable to work in certain regions, or you'll have to fight off attacks and progroms or support other Witcher schools in their struggles. Perhaps witchers from your school gets blamed for an assassination, or for supporting the elves during the genocidal human-elven wars, or some school begins to make dubious power plays and you must manouver relations and get to the bottom of the story whilst also ensuring the safety of your witchers, managing and training them off-season and building up your school to keep things going.
This can take place pretty early on post-conjuction to allow for a lot of options in how the Witcher world becomes governed, whilst also giving time for allowing things to return to the baseline lore of where things are by the time of the books and games.
By the end of the story, you could end up with reshaping the Witcher world and structures, creating a confederation of Witcher schools, with yourself at the top (or the bottom, if you would rather end things as a teacher than a politician) or retreating further from society.
There could also be optional battles for where you get to prepare for and fight monsters as the witchers you send out, or skip them if you are interested in the story.
There could also be an arena mode, where the monsters you have met can be fought under various conditions and challenges in order to unlock bonus content or level up things. This could made by for instance having one of the Witcher schools creating a research facility for catching and breeding monster, where fighting them unlocks new knowledge and skills.
Could even be a multiplayer mode with other players managing other Witcher schools in your game. This could be taken in different directions, such as a VS. mode where you compete for the same contracts, influence etc. but also as a slower turn-by-turn co-op mode for advancing through the story, helping one another or just playing together.
I would love for CD Project RED to steal this idea 😇

A good game with a great story, is all that matters. People were crying when we found out we wouldn’t be John Marston in Red Dead 2. Now Arthur Morgan is the iconic character. Its really about quality…..and if it’s there, it won’t matter.
Honestly this has me relieved. I'm very content with where i left geralt and hearing about a 4th game had me a lil concerned for 3's ending

I got no problem with Geralt not being the main character, he deserves peace after all those adventures. However I'd love to play as either Ciri or other characters in Geralt's circle. Regis would be an interesting choice but then again it wouldn't be a Witcher game.

Geralt will likely be involved in the main story. We know he will be in the game some. Geralt had how many books, games, And tv shows about him? I’m fine with the franchise moving on. I will always consider the Witcher as Geralts story, but there is a world to explore with new stories and characters
I think it’d be sick if like Cyberpunk we can start off in a character creator creating our own Witcher with his own custom background and stuff just like Cyberpunk

I think they wrapped up Geralt’s story in TW3 masterfully. All different manner of things introduced in the books and previous games had satisfying endings and Blood and Wine is the best epilogue I’ve ever played.
Either it's a build your own Witcher or a new protagonist (that is NOT Cirir) that would take the story in a all new direction.
If the timeline is around the same time for the new witcher game. We might see an older Geralt as a cameo or a functioning NPC.
I would be happy with Ciri or perhaps some other Witcher from say the Viper or Bear school
Maybe have a more grey character cuz let’s be real Gerald was a goodie even among humans for someone who’s suppose to be emotionless
I feel like it would be really cool if the MC got turned into a Witcher by accident or forcefully or something and they go around at the start trying to learn more about wtf witchers are and you find someone that’s like “well there was this ONE Witcher… Geralt of Rivia” and then you find old geralt and you have to convince him to show you how this Witcher shits done
I haven't played much of the Witcher. Only a couple of hours in witcher 3.
But my assumption would be Ciri with Geralt taking on the Role of Vesemir

It will be a character for modern audiences.
Having it not be Geralt I think is dumb. It’s possible it’s an amazing game, they just made it like 80% harder for it to be a good game. Geralt and Ciri are the Witcher story, books and game alike. It’ll be tough, but after Cyberpunk I believe they could pull it off.
They dont wanna follow the books anymore.
Just make sure if we do a "protagonist returns as an NPC thing" it's closer to a Devil May Cry or Metal Gear Solid return than a Last of Us 2 return.
Attachment to a character should never have them being used a protagonist after their story has wrapped up. As nice as it would be to see Geralt again thats all it would be, nice. There wouldnt be a point, a character arc or a story to tell, just a collection of epic geralt moments with no substance.
In CD project red we trust... If it was any other studio we mad...
