In the mid 80's, 84-85, I was in a long term facility for children in Honolulu. It was run by the salvation army. A treatment facility to teach children how to behave. They taught me so much and I credit my success as an adult because I was interred there for those years. The place is now an alcohol/drug rehab for adults.
I would love if a counselor from the facility that I was in was to see this message and know that the success of my life is transmitted to my children and that a cycle of abuse in my family stopped with me. All because of God and the Salvation Army.

I spent 25 years in the National Guard and responded to many natural catastrophes....the Salvation Army was always there giving a helping hand. When I was a kid they ran the Boys Club I attended after school, big help to my family. William Booth is a saint as far as I'm concerned.

I have been curious about the SA. When I was a girl, my mom would allow me to attend church with various friends, seemingly no matter the denomination (we were Lutheran). But when a friend asked if I wanted to go to the SA service with her family, my mom gave an uncharacteristically vehement “NO!” I couldn’t figure out what was so wrong with the SA and this doesn’t really give me a clear answer. I had been to JW services several times as well as Presbyterian, Four Square, Catholic (parents were married in Catholic Church), and more. I think she must have had some wrong information informing her decision.

I have a lot of time for The Salvos, as we call them in Australia. I grew up as a Seventh-day Adventist and was in their scouts equivalent, called Pathfinders. There were times when the local SDA Conference would book Salvo citadels for Pathfinder events, and we would also go door knocking for the Salvo Appeal every year.

If anyone is interested, there's an audio recording of Booth's voice available on RUclips. It was a very early audio recording when that technology was just being developed. It's very interesting to listen to it, as there's very little difference between his accent and the archaic US Northeast Cultivated accent of the early 20th century (heard in old movies).

I appreciate this summary of the Army. I am a 27 year officer in the United States. The Army is a wonderful organization that is facing the same pressures all churches are facing to bow to our current culture. I pray we will stay true to Scripture in our stances but at the same time show the compassion Christ showed to sinners of all kinds. Each year we get attacked from one side for being too traditional and from the other of being too progressive... I say let's be like Jesus and all will be good. I will avoid the Sacraments debate but the disagreement just in this comment section kind of illustrates William Booth's point... Christians have killed each other over these matters. Blessings.

I am so impressed with what William Booth about the sacraments, and his suggestion to join another congregation for the sacraments as one believes is fit to satisfies God's desires for us. Brought a tear to my eye, hearing a humble servant 1800+ years after Christ, to essentially say "Look, we dont know about all this sacramental stuff, and if you feel led, we urge you to be a member of a church that does all that stuff for you. We are not a church or denomination, but an auxiliary force for God's love. Go in peace"

In western countries the Salvation Army is known as a social organization that works in a systematic voluntary manner such as a lobby or temporary shelter to help poor and needy people, but unlike in Asian countries, the Salvation Army is found to focus more on helping spiritual and religious life. Many Salvatioon Army churches with a number of congregations that form thriving communities and live in harmony with other religious sects. In Asia and Pacific, they have several very active social institutions such as several hospitals, educational institutions and other public social facilities in collaboration with local governments. It is true that the Salvation Army is a denominational organization that grows and develops in accordance with the conditions and ethical culture following the needs of the people in that country.

Being a member offers me the opportunity to introduce people to a loving God who accepts them as they are. Salvation is free for those who want it. I know the Army is a good place for me. I am glad that you addressed this particular denomination as not many are willing to do so. The Salvation Army is famous for its humanitarian efforts and so to critique the ARMY is considered wrong. As someone who was raised a Soldier and almost went to Officer's training but for the grace of God, it worries me that not many know the full reality of this group. Their positions against (they call it non-adherence so not technically anti) the Sacraments of the Christian Church Universal are completely unfounded biblically and historically. As seen in General Booth's speech in 1883, the sacraments were put aside because they were not meant to be a church at all. It was not long after that they began calling themselves one and pushing Sunday services. As someone whose whole family is Salvationist, it pains me that there is a whole swath of individuals who are being convinced that there is no need for Baptism and no need for the Lord's Supper. Signing a contract is no Baptism. Praying over any ol' meal is no Lord's Supper.

Its not that I think that the remembrance of Jesus Christ in the bread and wine is for salvation, but I question the motives of someone that doesn’t want to do something that Jesus actually told us to do in remembrance of Him. Baptism isn’t a roadblock to salvation, but an attitude of reverence toward our savior. The bible clearly says to do these things and to go against the word of God makes a person wonder if the founder even understood basic theology. Infant baptism is fruitless, as the baby cant decide to have faith in Christ.

What has then changed the Salvation Army??? I have never met one individual promoting the Salvation Army who honestly spread the Gospel message. In fact, when the Salvation Army promotes their Christmas drive in my area, I have called them out for telling the crowd that “Christmas is all about Santa Claus for it is his day to celebrate!” Furthermore they refused to play or sing any Christian hymn or Christmas Carol but kept it strictly secular. Their Christmas drives are definitely to collect donations, and unfortunately, having no mind to tell the crowd about Jesus Christ whom they are supposed to represent and profess.

@@matiastolmo8936 First of all, dear friend, there’s nothing wrong in the annual remembrance and festive celebration of Christ’s holy birth. It is in our scripture after all, that the very Angels announced the Good News for all people of the once-and-for-allness of out Saviour’s birth! We celebrate this holiday as biblical because it was then that Christ was first proclaimed, recognized, and righteously worshipped as the Lord of all. The Word made flesh!
However, I digress....my point here is, the Salvation Army has indeed historically celebrated Christmas - but now there is a turning away from their biblical roots to fit a secular agenda and only use Christmas in order to get more donations...as it would clearly seem. Let us not forget that they still describe themselves as a (Wesleyan) Christian denomination. Yet today, it appears that any mention of Christ is denied during their annual public events, as well as a true professed Christian proclamation. Unfortunately it is fast becoming more in keeping with a secular agenda, and not at all fitting with their once historic and throughly Christian identity.

Shelter participants attend regular chapel services and are held to Christian standards. What you have encountered is mainly the charity outreach and marketing side which I will admit is very neutral and secular in its approach. Overall the SA does good work and is at the top of the list of charities that I will donate to. I would not use them as a primary Christian church home however. The goal is to lift people out of bad places in life and give them a path to a successful future, in that sense most people are just transitioning through.
