There’s something special with the balladeers and jazz artists of the 50s/60s. The quality of their instrument is out of this world - their vocal texture, tone, colour, phrasing - just mesmerising!!
This was music. These were ladies. That was a voice with elegance and charm. I am so glad I was born in those times when art was real. I daily thank God for not being born and growing up in these present times. Thank you Ella Fitzgerald, thank you Dinah Washington, thank you Doris Day, thank you Betty Carter, thank you Etta Jones, thank you Julie London, thank you Anita O'Day and thank you to the lovely and unique Nancy Wilson for showing us the light of an artform pure and deep. One incredible singer consistently under appreciated by critics but rarely ever by her fans. She is mesmerizing and just like magic you don't quite realize you've come under her spell. Miss Wilson is the best.
i have been under this lady's spell for 50 years , and i know and love it , i.e . when the great GERRY GOFFIN wrote GO AWAY LITTLE BOY it was left to MS. NANCY to transform it (original recording) from what sounded like a jingle , to a love song about emotional turmoil .
@@Seabasstien my friend ms. MANCY made a habit of this sort of thing , the first time i heard her rendition of BOBBY HERB'S SUNNY , i was driving home , when i got there i found my wife and asked her to please call me SUNNY from now on ,
Nancy Ann lived here and passed away here in Pioneer Town California. Drove a 6-year-old infinity she bought new of course ... and was so down to earth and lovable. In her final days she was on dialysis just like her late husband. But too weak to work anymore (and surely didn't need to!) she rounded up her band and flew out to Ohio to do one last public appearance for her alma mater. with her therapy arm stylishly draped in the black silk that matched her gown, she bravely greeted the audience and said if not for Cannon Ball Adderly and God, she would have stayed in pre-med . She sang her first number one hit. "and you don't know...how glad I am" and as the band kept playing..sang a few extra verses, looked at the mic she was holding and gently laid it down.......clearly signaling the final note to her career. That was it! she flew home and gracefully endured the agony of advanced renal failure at home with her loving cats and her audiobooks. She was a DEVOUT child of God and lived a Godly life.
Thank you so much Bill Campbell for all the info you posted. I imnediately sensed that she was a cat person!! From my point of view she surpassed Dinah Washington ( her idol ). Hv loved her since i was 12, and my admiration has never wavered. Very mean of the music industry not to hv named her a living legend while she was alive!! For us, of course, she had ALWAYS been a timeless legend!!!
Thank you so much. Since I was a teenager in Chicago, I’ve loved Nancy Wilson’s sophistication, voice, and way with a song. “Face it Girl” was the song I heard on the radio that blew me away and made me her forever fan. 💜
I think early on she was well-regarded as a jazz singer. It was her push to move into R&B that kind of tarnished her status, and she was never very commercially successful in R&B.
Don't forget the music industry, Nancy Wilson excelled in a genre of good music that very few people were listening to anymore. She was versatile enough to remain a relevant name and survive in this business to win two more Grammy Awards at the end of her career. She was just that. Good.
Hearing her reminds me of being a little girl in the sixties and my parents having music on the hifi 😊. We were so blessed by Ms. Wilson and so many other incredible artists. Thank you 🙏🏻😌❤️
I've attended about 20 Nancy Wilson concerts. I was fortunate to hear her in large venues like the Auditorium Theater in Chicago and very small places . I remember seeing her in a place so small that I could touch her . My seat was that close to the tiny stage. I remember thinking that she must be going through hard times to perform at such a tiny spot. I felt sorry for her but happy for myself because seeing Nancy Wilson in a small , intimate setting was the BEST way to experience her genius.
Agree Nancy loved the Blue Note in New York and I was lucky to see her in this world famous cabaret. Star Jones was there that night and I will never forget that evening in New York!
Barack Obama paid tribute to her on his Best of 2018 List - "And in honor of one of the great jazz singers of all time, who died this year, a classic album: The Great American Songbook by Nancy Wilson". She was one of the greats.
When in my twenties, I was taking some flute lessons from Danny Bank, a first call on 6 instruments. He had polio as a kid, so I would carry his stuff and sit in the woodwind section with him. We did a session for Nancy. She wore a mink stole and a very nice dress to the session. She was very friendly to everyone. You could see all the musicians were crazy about her...
I was fortunate to see her live during one of her last tours at Yoshi's jazz club in Oakland CA. She sang standards as well as great interpretations of "I can't make you love me" (Bonnie Raitt) and "Don't ask my neighbor" (The Emotions). She would grab a good song from any source.

Never thought anyone could sing "The Very Thought Of You" better than Nat King Cole. But I just found someone who can. This is the very best version with exactly all of the feeling that can be put into this song. I will be listening to Nancy's version of this song over and over again. Bravo Miss Wilson! And thank you Deborah Lynn for posting this priceless video!

One of the greatest. I saw her at Blues Alley in Washington, D.C.. Soror Wilson and I belonged to Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. When I joined, I sung her song "More" in the talent show. Gorgeous lady!❤
I was fortunate enough to see her at the Clearwater jazz festival in the 80’s. She was like watching a statuesque goddess flowing with the music and filling every note with great beauty. She was an exquisite lady inside and out. I’ve loved her for decades. Miss her now so much. Blessings to her fans!

Every time I see this particular video, from the Hollywood Palace (I've been in the audience twice), it blows me away the pipes this woman had. Not to mention the great song stylist she was. This is her in her prime, which was glorious indeed. I've been fortunate, and old enough, to have seen her in concert more than a dozen times. And under various social and business circumstances, have met with her on 4 occasions. Each seared into my mind. What a woman. Smart, funny and gorgeous at all ages. Sigh. No one like her today, that's for sure.

I'd say Jazz, Standard singers from the 40s through the 60s.
It was enhanced by the best of musical arrangers and a full orchestra with strings.
I second that. Dreamy.

That she was never granted the Kennedy Center Honor remains a tremendous oversight…
Damn. Smooooth and without a hint of a flaw.
