      Sure, there is some truth to that, @@umamifan , but it also is footage he had to shoot, edit, etc, so it's still something he put effort into, especially for a video that's not likely going to do big numbers or anything like that, he has no shortage of devices, etc, for him to make videos about so he doesn't really need to milk stuff.

    One thing nobody ever seems talk about is the screen angle thing.
    In order to have a good viewing angle on my GPD Win 3 (which does not have a hinge) without destroying my wrists, I have to either hold my hands up in front of my face, which gets tiring on my arms after a while, or lean forward and look straight down. If I'm on a train ride, I want to rest my hands on my lap as I hold it and lean back, and that requires the screen to be angled differently than the controls. A hinge allows for that. That comfort goes a long way.
    As for pocketability, I live in a cold enough climate to need some kind of jacket for most of the year, and a large enough inner jacket pocket is perfect for devices that are uncomfortable to carry in a trouser pocket (maybe even with the grips in some cases). When there's not a suitable jacket pocket, a small shoulder bag is basically an additional pocket and better than a backpack for easy access if you're only carrying that one thing.
    And one nifty use for a thumb keyboard and trackpad is typing in notes in a music tracker. I could definitely see myself making beats in Jeskola Buzz on a Win Mini if inspiration strikes when I'm out and about, to whatever extent the soundcard can handle it. So in that sense, I could definitely see it as a potential productivity device, but that's a pretty niche form of productivity. With the 1080p screen, it might also be okay for some basic video editing, with the keyboard used for hotkeys. And I'm fairly used to thumb typing, so I could see myself writing down lyric ideas on it as well. And maybe not a whole novel or screenplay, but if you're already in the middle of one and happen to think of something that needs to be written down, it'll probably do in a pinch as a secondary device. Some people might also use it for coding.

    • @LdotSdot210

      it would be awesome if it could run milkytracker, openmpt, or renoise.

    • @Swenglish
      @Swenglish 11 месяцев назад

      @@LdotSdot210 I used to run Milkytracker on a Pandora (which I sadly lost; it fell out of my pocket at a movie theater and wasn't found). Milkytracker will run on just about anything, and this is a PC, with far more power and compatibilities. I can guarantee Milkytracker will run perfectly fine.
      OpenMPT should run fine without VST's, as well. It doesn't require much. Once you bring VST's into it, there are more variables, so I'd definitely wanna test it using different audio drivers and buffer/latency settings. How well does it run on a generic laptop without an external audio interface?
      I've never used renoise, but I'd imagine it too needs testing. It seems a bit more advanced than Milkytracker.

      i live in a more mild part of scotland so you’re either wearing a jacket or have a thin raincoat on you and i can easily see myself chucking it in a jacket/hoodie pocket. i think the biggest hit to its portability for me at least is the actual price. if anything happens to it while i’m out that’s a lot of money gone 😅

    • @Swenglish
      @Swenglish 9 месяцев назад +1

      @@tioraidh-tux Yeah, that was the tragedy of my Pandora. Had it in my pocket (not inner pocket) in a movie theater and it must've fallen out in there or on the way home, and that wasn't quite expensive as the Win Mini, but definitely wasn't cheap, so that was a lot of money lost. Definitely being a lot more careful about checking my pockets when I'm carrying this thing around. And being careful not to bump into anything.

    Really appreciate this update video, clarifications and the in depth info from this and the first one. That demo of thumb typing was quite useful as well - i find the GPD MicroPC quite comfy for thumb typing, but that extra inch of size seems to make it more of a stretch.
    In the end most of these devices are a compromise in some way, and as you said it’s great we even get that choice. For me, the hope is it’s a device that is more portable and powerful than the Switch, while also being a full PC for all the flexibility - productivity and gaming.

    I went ahead and ordered one for myself - I was a huge fan of the Win 2, and also like my current Win Max 2, but wanted something a bit smaller. (Obviously we have somewhat different preferences, but I appreciate your perspective.)
    The Win Mini isn't exactly what was hoping for - I wanted something a touch smaller than the Win 2, and I think I'm going to miss the USB-A port. But on the whole, this is a lot closer to what I want than anything else out there, and I hope GPD sees enough interest in this one to do another update in a year or three.

    Thank you for making a follow up video! Indeed the first review felt lacking and this follow up really does shed more light on the device. Something to remember is that with a more unique handheld like this it's best to spend more time in the review covering it as it's a different approach to the handheld market compared to the familiar designs we typically see and expect. So highlighting what makes it different from the sea of devices and the ideal use cases is what people that are interested are looking for.

    Their mistake was to make a TKL keyboard. A 60% layout would be fully usable and the keys would be much larger and easier to type with. I would still like the option to use a mouse and keyboard for gaming (even if it does have a built in gamepad), but the keys being this small seems prohibitive to that end. This unlike the ally or steam deck replaces a tablet. It can do anything multimedia related like a tablet and have a large enough screen to make it an enjoyable experience. You get a full trackpad and keyboard to navigate windows. Unlike the Win 4 the keyboard is useable. The win 4 you need to move your hands into an awkward position. This device is even lighter then the ally and much lighter then the deck. It gives you the same 7" screen you get on those. You can type an email or a message to a friend or in an MMO just fine on these keyboards. These keyboards where used to type everything via text or email 15-20 years ago on cell phones. The issue that needs addressing on the mini is the heat and we will know if that got fixed in a few weeks. Supposedly it did up to 25w, but we need actual verification before believing gpd.
    As for portability, this fits into any sling bag, small pocket in a backpack, or purse. If you take your deck with you anywhere in that insane case it is less portable then a laptop because of its awkward shape. My deck takes up a lot of valuable space in my backpack every week when I have to pack for 2-3 days. The same will be true of the legion. Also the gpd can be stored in any hoodie or jacket pocket.

      I might be wrong, but it feels to me the 7640U is a step further to Steam Deck levels of gaming performance, with both having 8 CUs on the GPU (tho it's RDNA2 on the Deck vs RDNA3) and 6c/12t on the CPU on a more efficient and powerful node vs 4/8 Zen 2 cores. But CPU usually isn't a big problem for gaming (hell, to this day people play games nicely on 4/8 PCs). GPU is. The 6800U is great because it has 12 CUs, but with limited power, the CPU (8/16) and GPU sides keep fighting for power, thus making it not too good for low wattage. The 7840U deals much better with power constraints (and some people park 2 or even 4 cores on the BIOS to distribute more power to the GPU) but has the advantage of a higher performance ceiling if you give it more power, which is what quite some people want, that hour of powerful, hi-res gaming, even if it drains all the battery. It's not my case, I probably wouldn't go past 18w, maybe even 15w, depending on the game. So, in my limited view, if you prefer less power consumption for a decent enough performance, I see no issue with the 7640U. If you're not afraid of lower res or using some FSR, and locked 30fps (maybe 40), for heavier AAA titles. If you want a Deck+ of sorts.
      As I said, I might be wrong... but I might be right. Look for some 7640U gaming reviews on YT and Reddit.

    I'm very used to thumb typing. I had a Palm Treo, a Blackberry, and a couple other phones with physical keyboards. The problem with the GPD devices (I have a Win4) is that they're too big for thumb typing. Unless you have MASSIVE hands, it's nearly impossible to reach the middle letters like T, Y, G, H, etc. But, they're also too small for normal typing. They really sit in this weird spot where your best bet is to set it down on a table and peck at it with index fingers.

    The only handheld I carry around is my "New" 3DS XL, and it's perfect in my cargo pockets (or hoodie). The main reason I'm even looking at this one is that I'm hoping to be able to do the same.
    I might need to find a 3D print, or block of wood, so I can try it out before dropping $1K. If it fits, I don't mind the bulk- for some reason I actually like feeling knowing that my 3DS is where I put it, while at the same time I'm constantly nervously checking my phone in my other pocket isn't slipping out, for the millionth time, and I have a big phone in a big case.

    I just had my win 4 stolen. Ive been wondering what to do about it. I love my steam deck, but it really doesnt work as a desktop replacement for me. It's fine for daily browsing and such, but I need windows for work and Im not bothering with dual booting on my deck. The win 4 was perfect as an all in one device. But after being stolen I really dont know what to pick next. Another win 4 but the 7840u this time? Or this win mini. It doesnt have the same style as my win 4, and It looks less pocketable. I frequently carried my win 4 in my back pocket. But the screen is larger, it has more ram, more screen refresh rate options, and a newer processor and arguably a better thumb keyboard. I use em daily to play games, but also as a docked multi-screen desktop. I used 3 monitors with my win 4 daily for instance.

    Some quality of life ideas for this clamshell form factor:
    1. Keyboard keys can be made much larger by just having the number and functions via shift/fn keys.
    Don't need to replicate a full keyboard physical layout, just the basic letters and numbers for gaming.
    2. Wider and deeper alcove for the sticks - This would allow for "taller" sticks and a wider range of movement while still allowing the device to close flush and protect the screen.
    3. Is the trackpad actually essential and often used? Could space be saved by eliminating the track pad and making the right thumbstick better callibrated to act like the mouse?
    Navigation out of games could be helped with just the use of a good calibrated right thumbstick mouse mode, touch screen and a front end.
    Windows is still terrible as a touchscreen OS.

    • @RomanBellicTaxi
      @RomanBellicTaxi Год назад

      Microsoft made a bad OS which was on the right direction for touchscreen - Windows 8. They had Windows Phone/Mobile to learn some more. Now on Win 11 it feels they just threw it all out the window.

      Microsoft doesn't know what it's doing.
      They had so many ventures and side things that have failed, that I think it's the leadership at the highest end and the whims of its shareholders that are the cause of it.
      The only two consumer entertainment products that I can think of that has been successful for Microsoft is the Xbox and Surface.
      and both are beginning to die. Xbox is dying because MS are focused on trying to sell game pass subscription services and Surface Duo is very much dead in the water because they can't make a touchscreen OS.
      Windows phones and Windows 8 had potential, but it had image problems and Microsoft didn't know where to go with it.
      Surface Neo wasn't going anywhere because Windows was never going to be ready for tablets/phones, let alone a more sophisticated device like the Surface Neo.
      Microsoft shows very little commitment and follow through.
      And many of the leaders of those ventures have or are departing.

      No please no joystick mouse. There are so many times you need a mouse AND the game pad persistently connected. Whether it’s due to software funkiness where the controller won’t be re-detected, or that it turns into player 2, or exits full screen, or you don’t have time to wait for the software to switch modes.
      Joysticks also suck for accuracy, no way would this be acceptable. And no, the touchscreen isn’t a good alternative. It doesn’t even function as a proper mouse at all times in windows. If you want a device that does this, go get literally any other brand than GPD and leave us alone.

    Actually I never see people carrying anything other devices besides their phones in their pockets and people actually playing games on the go is also very rare. Maybe children showing some mobile games to their friends but even then they aren't playing the seriously. I guess most people just put them in their bags anyway and play them once they have reached their destination like inside their hotel rooms before going to sleep.
    So in the end, pocketability might be more of the theoretical thing than and actual practical one.
    Too bad GPD devices can't be tried out in store like you can with the Ally or maybe even the SD. Would love to try out the Win Mini and Max, to see if they might be even better than the Win 4 for my use cases, because they are also offering physical keyboards (for DOS or Amiga emulation, especially RPGs).
    PS: I wouldn't want to play a shooters with analogue sticks at all. Nothing beats mouse and keyboard for first and and even certain third person games. Playing Skyrim with a controller felt horrible.

      There are pros and cons to each but both are a bit uncertain about the final form. They are rushing for a Nov shipping date. The Go has a Z1E with a 8.8" 144hz native landscape display which is nearly 9" big at 1600p vs the 7" portrait 120Hz Mini at 1080p. The Go has a bigger Li-Po battery 49Whr battery vs the 44Whr on the Mini. The Z1E will be more power efficient than the 7840u on the mini. Also the Go runs faster ram at 750oMT because of the LPDDR5X vs LPDDR5 6400MT found on the Mini but the Mini can have 16, 32GB or 64GB options where as the Go is stuck at 16GB. This seems limited with newer games coming out down the road the higher resolution of the Go's screen uses more vram but if you plan to play at only 800p you can make it work. You get a free carrying case with the Go but this thing is big. The joycons are super thick. The base unit has a tiltable kickstand. There are more features with the Go like FPS mode with using a joycon as a mouse which is neat but could be gimmicky. One cool thing is that these joycons can be paired with ios / android/ or another pc. I have a feeling the Go will be better ventilated to get more performance out of it on a single fan. Probably quieter too at higher TDP than Mini. You can also quick charge it back to 70% in under 30min. Just know this thing is big and chunky and the weight might be a limiting factor. It's a great value at the $750 price point coming with a 1TB fast ssd. The Mini has 2 type-c usb ports with a dedicated Oculink port! You can plug an EGPU in it. The Go has 2 USB type-c 4.o ports that may not support an egpu officially but usually you can do it over USB 4.o. The bandwidth of usb 4 is substantial slower than Oculink so the external GPU option will be worse off performance wise but functional. The Go weighs close 1.85lbs with joycons and the Mini is a hair above a 1lb. That's it in a nutshell.
