WOW ! Loved the book and learned so much. Thank you to so many of my friends who told me to go to you tube. My Dad rowed for the USA in 1936. He was in a double that did not medal. It was a thrill for me to see the opening ceremony and of course the eight from Washington who won the gold. Thank you Mr. Brown !
In 2002, I was the maid of honor at my friends wedding on the island of Kauai. We stayed at Waialua Bayview on the third floor. On the first floor was a nice man from Washington State who stayed there during the winter, called “Big Jim”. My husband and myself were invited into his condo along with my friend and her new husband. He told us this story in a very humble and matter-of-fact way. Being that I am someone to ask more questions I asked him where he kept his gold medal. So he reached into his pocket and pulled out a little velveteen bag….. and produced the gold medal for the four of us to marvel at. I knew I was witnessing greatness. We were all allowed to hold the metal. I have photographs of us all that I wish I could post here. I was quite overwhelmed and tearful of being allowed to not only meet this man and hear his amazing story but to also realize that for all these years he carried his gold metal in his front pocket. I came from a generation of watching gymnasts like MaryLou design their own rooms for their gold medals and place them under glass. I am still to this day amazed that I was able to meet a man who was and is so incredibly amazing and who allowed us a gift that we cannot really fully explain the levity to in words to anyone else. It was a “you had to be there” kind of day. At the time in 2002 there was no book about his life but I came home thinking that there should be and I am so glad someone did write one. It was an absolutely amazing story to hear firsthand in March 2002. And I don’t know what made me think of Big Jim today but I am so glad to be able to find this video linked to an article about him and his team while Hitler was watching. Thank you Jim McMillin for that day. USA ♥️
PHENONEMAL book!! Just finished "The Boys in the Boat" Those hardscrabble kids from the era of the greatest generation never fail to amaze me!! Just had to watch the video. Everyone should read the book by Daniel James Brown!
Just finished reading the book and hence googling the race! Brilliant read confess it had me tearing up on the subway in New York, your Grandpa is an inspiration.
And 22 years later during the Cold War, the first US sporting victory inside the Soviet Union was the upset victory over Soviet rowers of the Leningrad Trud Club by another 8 man crew from the same college- University of Washington, seen taking gold here in the 1936 Berlin Olympics.
this films shows to me how advance german filming was, the quality for a start, im sure it was filmed in colour, (but no technology then to show it) and the camera shots between 2:00 and 3:00 are brilliant, verging on artistic, you dont get them now at the relevised races
Rmcaw, your comment is very old, but maybe you will read my answer anyway. Leni Riefenstahl was one of the most talented filmmakers ever! Her documentary about the 1936 Olympics is technically brilliant, and I think that everybody who is interested in the history of movie making, should watch it. It's too bad that her outstanding achievements are forever marred by her uncritical attitude towards Hitler and his monstrous Third Reich. It cannot be denied that Riefenstahl used her outstanding talents for helping Hitler to come across as a visionary and charismatic political leader in her infamous documentary about the convention of Hitler's party in Nuremberg. Unfortunately her immense pride never allowed her after the war to clearly admit that she had chosen the wrong bed fellows.
Also just read Dan Brown's brilliant book "Boy's in The Boat" and had to find this clip from "Olympia" by Leni Reifenstahl. A remarkable, MUST READ story. JenHuffman70, bless your grandpa... No 7 seat would make him Joe Rantz... I hope his life was sweet after the games, Lord knows he endured hardships before. As a lifelong Husky fan with a daughter who rowed crew, I cannot begin to tell you what the Husky Clipper and the Boy's in the Boat, meant to my family. Thanks to Joe and his teammates!
@ollieee12321 Well spotted! A lot of the film of this olympics was staged footage taken during training mixed with filming during actual competition. The audience at the time wasn't as educated in filming and cameras as we are now, so would just have accepted it. Also this was not really like a sports bulletin, it was released as a feature film, so it's trying to capture the spirit of the event as well as the actual results.
Go Huskies!! The University of Washington represented the United States in 1936. They beat California for the national championship earlier that year. It may have been the greatest U.S. team victory ever. How many others beat the Nazi's and Fascist's in front of Hitler?

Yeah, just finished the book! My only regret is not reading it soon! Oh my gosh, they are amazing!
There’s gonna be a movie based on it and I think it’s starring Callum Turner as the lead role.
@@jediconnor9349 Yeah, George Clooney is directing.
@@bessarion1771 Is it still coming out this year? There’s no trailers nor much on RUclips about this movie.
