Why Lightning Style Is So Broken In Naruto

  • Why is lightning style so broken in the Naruto series? Out of the 5 Nature transformations in Naruto, lightning style seems to be the most powerful. Jutsus like Raikiri, Chidori, Kirin, Indra's Arrow, and the Raikage Amps make it seem like lightning style is just superior to other elements.
Besides, Sasuke was using lightning style up until the last fight in Naruto Shippuden, and using it effectively. Foe example in the Naruto vs Sasuke fight or even in the Naruto and Sasuke vs Madara fight. Other elements never got the treatment in the story. But why is lightning style so much strongers?

TBH I think Earth is probably the strongest of the five basic transformations. Heavy Boulder jutsu lets you petrify people and increase your physical hits by a lot. Lighten Boulder jutsu lets you fly (because reasons) without any special Kekegenkai while also letting you transport heavy objects and increase your movement speed. That earth style hardening Kakazu had, for as much as we meme it, gives you a really solid defense that presumably scales with experience and ability. You can make earth style golems. Earth style mud clones like Orochimaru used are some of the best clones in the series. Mobile Core lets you change the battle field in a instant. And to top it all off Earth is one half of the three strongest double element transformations, Explosion Style, Lava Style, and fucking Wood Style. If you take Filler as cannon then it’s also part of Crystal style meaning literally all of its combinations are broken.

I wish the Wind Style/Wind Release had got the same or comparable treatment as the Lightning Style in the manga and show. Considering how much it's hyped up at the beginning of Shippuden as the titular MC's ONLY Nature Transformation we almost never get to see its potential. Yes, we had Rasenshuriken, which was cool, we had a glimpse of Fuuton Rasengan, which should've become Naruto's main close range offensive option instead of the regular Rasengan, IMO, and we also have seen a couple of wind jutsus done by Danzo and Sora. For a show called "Hurricane Chronicles" there seems to be a lack of, well, "hurricanes" and such, if you ask me. Imagine what could've been done if, for example, Naruto had received proper elemental training from someone capable of more than infusing a knuckle blade with chackra (no offense, Asuma). Invisible and ungodly sharp wind blades than extend from weapons, providing phantom reach, wind cannon, wind bullets, some form of vaccum style jutsu that just sucks out air from a specific area. Hell, even a Wind style version of Kirin, a natural dragon-like or a bird'like creature made out of a tornado.

    • @satriyanto6741
      @satriyanto6741 Год назад +5

you forgot that Asuam did say that Ninja with winds nature chakra is rare. If the user rare, then the number of people who try to exploit that nature in fighting is also small. Hence, the one to be used as reference would be small too.
So far, most of ninja with wind element always uses it in the shape of blade. The first time that occurs is a Ninja from sunagakure who killed that referee. And then, Temari. Then comes Asuma with his windblade. And then Danzo. You see, almost no versatility.
Asuma himself said, that manipulating the wind chakra is the hardest than the others chakra element. But his capabilities in offense is the greatest.
I'm not agree by this video about lightning style is a broken. It's about how to use it. In term of offense, indeed, lighting has better use. But Fire has wider ranger. Most ninja with water chakra has a better chakra manipulation because it is easier than the rest. And earth is more solid, good for defense.
So, it's like you compare a spear with a shield. Would you say that a spear is broken tools, and say that shield is so lame?
Lightning style rarely be used for protection. Until you find Raikage. But that's another level of Ninja.
In term of difficulty to control :
      wind > lightning > fire > water > earth
      In term of offensive ability
      wind > lightning > fire > water > earth
      In term of defense potential
      earth > water > fire > lightning > wind
      In term of versatility
      fire > water > earth > lightning > wind
In term of area of effect
      Fire > Wind > Water > Earth > Lightning
Talking about area of effect with lighting, of course it can be used for wide area. But this condition will minimize its offensive capabilities by far. Lightning's offensive capabilities come from using a bunch of chakra and condensing them into the small, making it sharp. If not, then it only gives a stun effect, not piercing.
Here pro and con that I can come up from the series.
      - Water is more balance, and gives the user a better control in their chakra, but the least offensive.
      - earth is more rigid, gives the user solidity, have better offensive than water, and better defensive than fire.
      - Fire is more fluid, gives the user versatilities, can attack a wide area, good for crowd control, and the technique doesn't need extra ability in manipulating or controlling chakra. You don't need to control, just release them wide. It's all about how much chakra you are going to use.
      - wind is more stronger, gives the user stamina. but it's hard to control and hard to manipulate.
      - Lightning is more sharper, makes the user more critical in fighting, but it consumes massive amount of chakra to make it effective, while in most, it is a pinpoint attack that focus on one target. Not good for crowd control. The most chakra consumption.
Now, you need to compare them in the same level of jutsu class. Don't you ever compare a Kirin with Kakuzu's earth style solidifying technique. Don't compare Gamabunta's Mizurappa with Asuma's wind blade. Don't compare earth wall with Raikage's lightning protection.

Lightning is definitely the most direct and offensively oriented of the 5 basic elements, but it has its own drawbacks. It's insanely difficult to use Lightning Release because it typically only exists in short bursts and requires incredible control and stamina to use. Lightning Release techniques are also the most direct and focused, whereas the other elements, particularly Fire Release, tend to have much larger AoEs and persist longer, with Fire, Water, and Earth Release having persistent effects on the battlefield, whereas Wind and Lightning Release do not. Lightning Release is also typically very flashy and loud, so while it is popularly used for sure-kill techniques like the Chidori, it lacks much of the subtlety of Earth, Water and Wind Release, with Wind Release being especially devastating because it is essentially invisible and doesn't leave as much of a footprint. Furthermore, Lightning Release trades offensive power for defensive strength in most circumstances, so against sufficiently powerful jutsu of other elements, especially Wind and Fire Release, Lightning Release will lose out.

Problem with lighting is that, it has attributes that it should not have. There is no reason for lighting to be piercing, the entire premise of Raikiri or Chidori is nonsensical. Wind should have been the only one with piercing properties. It also does not make sense for lighting to be very precise like how Sasuke extends it, it is lighting, not a light beam. It is also not cutting, so Kakashis lighting cord also does not make sense. Drawing such a cord makes sense, but if anything gets caught between it, it should be paralysed and maybe burned but not cut. The only thing that can make lighting cut is if you channel it through metal objects, those metal objects get very hot. But that is just the heat you can get from fire style being created indirectly, so no one that can use fire style should have used lighting for cutting.
Lighting should have been paralysing, it should have been fast, but very hard to precisely control or aim, just like how real electricity works. Instead it was paralysing, fast, precise, piercing and cutting. It received 2 attributes it should not have and was given the inverse of its weakness.

I recall that the idea with the chidori/raikiri was to use the explosive power of lightning to help the user pierce a body right through with a short burst of power that can't be blocked; IRL lightning can break concrete and pulverize rocks etc. so it makes sense for it to be able to pierce things if it's focused on a single point; and the way chidori/raikiri looked made it seem as if it was a struggle to even hold it in place, much less focus it. Remember how Kakashi had to hold his arm with all his might the first time he used it in the Land of Waves arc? Or how the chidori was created because lightning release was too hard to control to be put into the rasengan so it just collapsed and took on that form?
Later on, the amount of precision it gets it's just dumb. Sasuke just releases a burst of electricity into Deidara's bombs and it disables them? Some say that it's because Deidara's kinjutsu was a mix of earth and lightning but that just makes it even worse. Like, did Sasuke have control so precise that he voided the polarity or the chemistry of the bombs to do that? Or is it just that lightning style breaks down the clay so it can't go off but it somehow leaves no damage on his tissue? It was just absurd.

    • @ClashBluelight

I personally would have made lightning all about speed advantage. If you use it on yourself, you get faster. If you use it on your opponent, they get slower. Lightning being able to stun opponents while boosting the user's speed would have made it incredibly powerful. We could even keep chidori if we did this. Just have Kakashi hold a kunai. He uses lightning element chakra to speed up his arm to lightning speed, and the kunai becomes like a hypersonic missile in terms of its effect on its surroundings. There, chidori without giving lightning the special attribute of wind. Then, I would nerf lightning a little bit by making it have a very high chakra cost. Lightning users would be able to absolutely dominate any 1v1 for a few seconds, then they would have to take a break to recover their chakra. It would become the favorite element for ninjas who like quick sure-kill strikes, and fast escapes. Then I would make fire the AOE type, water the all rounder, but only usable around water sources, wind would stay the cutting type, and earth would remain slow and defensive. I feel that would be the balanced way to handle the elements. If we did this, we wouldn't even need the elemental weakness system, since all the elements already counter each other as Yamato stated.

@@loliH9 Nah, they said that by vibrating and refining lighting chakra, they condense it and make it pierce which does not make sense. Your version could have made more sense if it was applied to the foot rather than the tip of the hand.
Lighting pulverizes rocks, not because it is very good at it but rather because the magnitude of power a lighting has is incredible. But the only comparable thing to it is Sasuke's Kirin, not a Raikiri.
I can see lighting having one point of contact, which can create a weakness at one point, but even water is more suited towards piercing and cutting than lighting. People use lasers to cut but not electricity stream.

While yes it was big moments when Sasuke hurt Gara and Sasuke soloed Yamato. A big part of that is due to the inherent strength of lighting over the main chakra natures of the two characters.
Gara uses sand which is made of Earth, and according to the element system Kishi made, Lighting> Earth.
Yamato uses Wood Style which is made of Earth and Water. Both are elements lighting has an advantage over. Earth because of in universe rules and water because it's a really effective conduit for electricity.
Other than I agree with you. Lighting definitely has some major favoritism. I would have love to see some more variation and respect to the other chakra natures. IMO water is the most underwhelming of all, mostly because, without water nearby, casting water jutsu is heavily weakened (fire or lightning don't have this limitation). The only powerful jutsus are from Kisami (with his chakra levels, anything would be powerful) or kekkei genkai.

I think a nice drawback to give Lightning release is that it requires a lot of chakra control to use to its full extent due to its volatile ecstatic nature. Makes sense cuz Sasuke & Kakashi are known for having great chakra control and use their Lightning release with shape transformations.
The Raikage got around this drawback by just using the simplest forms of Lightning release to enhance their physical strength & speed. Darui, who is more calm and focused, is proficient with the more conplex Lightning releases and also uses Storm release.
Contrast with Earth style which I think would require more raw chakra reserves to take the nature to its full extent, and Wind style which seems to rely on maybe Stamina (being able to sustain a chakra release).
Fire seems to be the all rounder of the 5 whereas Water release seems to mostly rely on Shape Transformation.
Just my little theory. If anything I'd maybe switch the places of Fire & Wind releases, making Wind the all rounder and Fire Stamina based.
Wish Kishimoto would go into the nuances of each release.

I would argue that the aftermath of an Element is also important:
    - Fire means burns, and long term scars. Either the Fire is weak (therefore no scars), or so strong that the target is no longer there. It might appear that some characters as a burn face or something, but you have 2 characters maximum mostly in backstory.
    - Wind (in Naruto) is more like a Cutter. It does those nice "slice" easy to draw, with some blood. Basically, the second strongest after Lightning here.
    - Earth means bruise or crushed. Technically, the "strongest" so dumbed down to be anecdotal. Just like in combat, Hammer is more efficient than Sword, but Sword is more 'stylized'. It suffers the same fate as Fire: either too weak, or "deadly" (well, Obito kind of fit here?).
    - Water is more a "support" element that can justify everything. Basically, Water can be a good element, but all depends how creative the writer is.
    - Lightning has the easier aftermath: just make the character shaky a few second, with maybe some spark and its done. Not scar, no bruise, no cut. Easy element to work with as a drawer.
In short: Lightning and Wind (as Cutter) is easy to work with. Fire is impressive but too deadly to make it efficient in a universe. Earth is like Fire, except it is underwhelming. Water is a really versatile element, but behave badly as a powerboost: Water is mostly used as support (trap, ice projectile, healing...).

This I think it is more an issue that the story leaned far heavier into a shinobi battler, which scaled to absurdity, rather than the shinobi world and missions where things other than your combat power are shown valuable. Basically Lightning style looks the strongest since we never have to see its weak side that its a style with limited utility and all the subtlety of a lightning bolt.

It should be noted that the 3rd and 4th Raikage are so broken with their lightning jutsu because their taijutsu skills, physical power, speed and durability are already broken enough...
You are adding wings to a tiger... aka, boosting what is already strong... so it's not that lightning was strong but they happened to be strong with lightning...
And actually, the Rasenshuriken DID beat the lightning armor.... it's just that the Raikage's body was even tougher...
And Sasuke had the chakra of NINE tailed beast, but Naruto still tied while using ONLY the HALF the Kyuubi.....
