  • As we go into summer workouts and preseason practices, the chances of heat stroke rise. Heat Stroke is one of the leading causes of death in sports. Proper recognition and rapid cooling are a person’s best chance of survival.
If a cooling tub is unavailable, a good alternative is the Tarp
    Assisted Cooling Method (TACo)
    a) For this method you will need a tarp, ice, water, and a crew of 4-5 people.
    b) After calling 911, Place the patient in the middle of the tarp.
    c) Have a few teammates help by picking up each side of the tarp. Try to keep the patient’s head raised.
    d) Pour ice and water into the tarp.
    e) Oscillate the tarp back and forth (slowly) to agitate the water and initiate cooling.
Lowering the patient’s core temperature could take up to 20 minutes of cooling. Patients should never be removed any earlier than that. REMBER: Cool First, Transport Second!
