How to do CPR on an Adult - First Aid Training - St John Ambulance

- In the event of a pandemic, do not put your face near the casualty's. Instead, look for the chest rising and falling to check for breathing and cover the casualty's mouth and nose with a cloth. Give chest-compression-only CPR.
If an adult is unresponsive and not breathing, you will need to do CPR. In this video, a St John Ambulance trainer takes you through CPR steps and demonstrates how to perform CPR on an adult.

"To help you keep pace you can sing staying alive" .*Starts singing* ," ha ha staying live staying alive ha ha " !!!!! Good info!
note: staying alive is a music by the group so called bee gees..it has proven that the rate of this song is exactly 120 beats per second...so by singing this song you can be sure about the times you push patients chess.
On my first aid course (st John's ironically) they made a good (and clear) point of not actually signing the song - i.e. do it in your head and to be careful of what you say (i.e. things like "that guy's fucked")
Some people can still hear what going on - that song could very much be the last thing they hear.
Another one bites the dust works too
I'd get carried away singing
@@xatoor lmaooo can you imagine just before dying you hear “another one bites the dust, doo doo doo
Why dont they teach this at schools??
Edit: it turns out they do. Just a lot of people forgot (including me)
Coaly boi because they want to decrease population
I don't know what it's like these days, but back in the 90s we were taught this at school.
They did in the 80s-90s. Wouldn't surprise me if they don't now.
@@KakashiH318 yes that's exactly why they posted this on RUclips, where everyone has access to this information
Jethro Bro okay the decreasing the population thing was a joke but they should still teach at schools because everyone has access, but not everyone is gonna look this up. It’s better to teach at schools to shove it down throats
Thanks for this. I work in a public place, often alone, and I live in fear of being in a situation where I would need to do this! These instructions really help. (Yes, I have asked my boss if I can go on a First Aid course. I'm still waiting.....)
Well done, this is the best video on CPR I've seen theres a NHS paramedic video but they say during pandemic which is arguably still happening put a cloth over peoples mouths. I would do with mouth unless a strangee+ i have a CPR mouthpiece in my 1st aid kit I carry when I drive&@home. Mouthpieces are just a 1 way valve & v cheap, your boss may get some especially if customers ask.
thank you, I am taking a refresher course tomorrow and this was very good for preperation
Thank you for the very clear explainations
it's great to learn this. never thought i'd need to do it and boy was i wrong
Me too - I could have used this info a cpl days ago. Thankfully the person was ok once professional help arrived.
Thank you for such a clean explanation
very good clarifying info thankyou
''In the event of a pandemic.....'' If my loved one were in danger, no ''pandemic'' consideration would be appropriate. And even a stranger would have my help if I could give it effectively, risk of contagion or not.
I'm quite disappointed that he didn't start singing staying alive.
The video could get copyrighted if he did

I haven't renewed my certification in some time, and I'm now in a foreign country. Just learned it's now CAB, not ABC. Thank you for the video.
I haven't been in my cadet unit since the start of the Northern Ireland lock down but last I heard it is still abc, not sure about other places tho 👍

Amazing video! How do you perform CPR on someone with a disability
I love how he incorporates maths and ratio into lifesaving
Imo this should be part of school CV and mandatory course in any job. People freak out that they weren't trained ans if someone is eg hit by car they do nothing. Except if someone is not breathing they are already basically dead so either you try to do CPR or they can check funeral house ticket. It doesn't even matter that much if you push too hard, they can fix broken ribs at hospital. They can't fix dead brain. Ton of people dead who didn't have to be because none around knew these basics and did something.
Couldn't agree more
I dont understand the rescue breath bit at 1:55 - is it you put your mouth over theirs, then wait a second, then do 2 rescue breaths? Or you do one breath, then 2 more?

Dont forget the steps before cpr, which are also very important. So we did a video on that topic too, maybe there are additional important informations
Hi there, you can watch our video on the Primary Survey here: ruclips.net/video/ea1RJUOiNfQ/видео.html
My teacher showed to us this video today.
I'm a sea cadet, and on our intermediate first aid. NB- Our instructor is one of the many ambulance crew. He told us that 'Stayin Alive' by the Bee Jees, changed speed, we did a challenge on a CPR , how many compressions we could do in 1 minute, I, got 174 compressions, and plus, what if you hadn't heard of that song?? What other song are you going to use.
P.S - you are allowed to argue, but I am hopefully going to complete my intermediate tonight at cadets so I will have probably know the awnser to my argument/point.
Kx
Hi there - the recommended compression rate is between 100-120 beats per minute. Another song that some people have found useful is Nelly the Elephant.
Hi, I have also been told that 'Nelly The Elephant' isn't suitable. I struggle to sing songs in my head
I always have to sing it out loud. and I DON'T WANT TO DO THAT!!
if yr not sure how to sing aim for 2 compression's a second or just under 2 a second
BenCarter42 I have actually. My grandad died after tho. Maybe you should stop acting like you know what I have and haven't done.
it toi helpful to me
i like this video
I need to ask a Question cuz I am going to a Exam St John First thing to do is Check Breathing right?
Shery you go through the primary survey first to determine whether they’re breathing. They have a video on this and I’m also doing an assessment for them soon!
Real 1
any contraindication for cpr
od we still need to give rescue breaths> because I had read articles some says it is not important anymore because brain has enough oxygen for 5minutes? i dont know
just give chest compression (100 compression per minute)
.. they changed the rule
When the 2010 American Heart Association Guidelines for Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and Emergency Cardiovascular Care were released, one of the underlying goals was to eliminate barriers to action and increase bystander CPR rates by simplifying CPR for untrained bystanders.
This involved supporting compression-only CPR as it simply requires a few minutes to learn and can be easily communicated to the masses, resulting in more people taking action.
However, the primary message that came from the news media was that rescue breaths were eliminated from CPR. Due to this overwhelming messaging, the goal of simplifying CPR for untrained rescuers via compression-only CPR inadvertently created further confusion on the importance of rescue breaths overall.
My father did st John first aid training
Is it true that sometimes the casualty can get their ribs broke while doing CPR?
Marcelo yes and if you do break the ribs you still continue cpr
Marcelo absolutely true
It's better then go to hospital with broken ribs than dead
If you do a good cpr, ribs are breaking. So we did a video on that topic too, maybe there are additional important informations
That is 100 percent true, and if u break the ribs doing cpr it is totally OK, it just means ur pushing a little bit too hard, a few broken ribs is better than a loss of life, but yes, it is true if u push hard enough 👍👍

How do you work an AED on an unconscious patient please?
Hi Pat, this video explains how to use a defibrillator (AED): ruclips.net/video/UFvL7wTFzl0/видео.html
Still I didn’t get how to do it in my mouth
hi,I want to know how to registering for a course,I want to register a first aid course, how much? plz help I want to make it.tnkx
You can find out from your local council and or citizens advice or St Johns Ambulance Service, College and Libraries etc. I hope that is some help for you.
if you are a sea cadet, air cadet or army cadet (or similar) you will definatly learn it there, Kx
ntombie Ncatayi it’s costs £120 for a emergency first aid at work course, with St. John ambulance with a AES demo you have to be 16+ there is a first aid at work course that is for all ages also with a AED demo
Question: I need to use an AED everytime someone is unresponsive?
If they aren't breathing, then yes.
Can the person's tongue roll to their neck and eventually choke?
Great vid! but why would be anyone unwilling to give the rescue breaths??
Adil Mehmood because most of the time the casualty will have blood or vomit in their mouth
The person could have herpes on the lips and you'd be stuck with it for the rest of your life if you don't already have it. I've always wondered how people would react in that specific situation.
BrainiacN5 this is why you should always carry pocket resus masks with you. You can have portable plastic sheet masks or more professional bigger ones. That way your lips won’t get in contact with theirs and you can still deliver rescue breaths
Another good reason not to give rescue breaths with your own mouth is due to allergies. You may have eaten something the casualty is allergic to. This can lead to a life treating situation.
I love to administer rescue breaths.
This is Effective. i will make video same as this but in philippine setting and pinoy dialect please help to corect my video
Also stop CPR when the AED instructs you to do so.
Also your chin lift was poor with no raised elbow and pressure against the chin which would close the primary airway.
H. Brownaldo This video is based if there is no AED

Check the airway first
I am a certified lay rescuer, and I think he didn't mention the important parts, Checking for CAB of life such as Circulation, Airway, and Breathing, He didn't instructed the importance of counting aloud while giving 30 compression and checking for Circulation after 5 cycles. It must be, 30 compression, 2 rescue breaths, 5 cycles and check the pulse then repeat if the patient has still no pulse rate.
Hi there, checking the Airway, Breathing and Circulation is part of the Primary Survey (ruclips.net/video/ea1RJUOiNfQ/видео.html). This video begins at the point where you have already ascertained that the casualty is unresponsive and not breathing normally. The important points in CPR are recognition, getting bystander help and calling an ambulance, giving early CPR, and using a defibrillator if one is available. The latest guidance (from the Resuscitation Council UK) is to keep doing cycles of CPR continuously until emergency help takes over, the casualty becomes responsive and starts breathing normally, or you become too exhausted to continue. This video is aimed at individuals that have not received advanced life support training. The guidance for qualified first responders and trained clinicians may differ, as they have a more advanced level of skill.
+St John Ambulance - I agree with Mr Inion, I totally agree. love the seizure a at museum tho, everyone was posting on snapchat by the end of the session!!
I didn't know what an "AED" was. It would have helped if he'd just said "Defibrillator".
Clearest video ive seen out of 4 for lay people, if too complex most forget& if you have a smartphone or PC your abit of a xxxx if you dont look up what AED means ;-) ✌
What if the patient has injury near the chest? How to perform CPR?
If there is an object in their chest, cover it with a clean cloth and hold it to the wound. Do not remove the object. If the casualty is not breathing, call an ambulance and begin CPR around the wound after removing all clothing. 30 compressions at a rate of 100-120 per minute. Then give 2 rescue breaths and repeat until help arrives or they begin to breathe.
I cannot understand the accent,so parts of the instruction are missed. What’s an AED? What’s recovery position?
You can google those 2. SJA also has videos on those. If there were any specific parts that you could not understand due to the accent, you can ask here and I’ll try to help
Turn on the captions, I wouldn't have understood a word without them.

My knees hurt arthritis all my life
Kneeling on a hard floor or pavement would be impossible. Have to be a thick cushion or there would be unbearable pain for me to do cpr.
as a first year student nurse... we've been told tht we do not practice mouth to mouth anymore.
I was told that a year ago in a police training course too.
The video is 2 years old, relax
I think in public if comfortable it's still 2 rescue breaths and then 30 compressions. In a hospital it's face mask and straight up to 15 litres of oxygen if I'm not mistaken.

being real Idiot! The purpose is clear communication, why did they choose someone with a heavy accent to explain? His knowledge is fine but I guarantee 90% of people will have trouble understanding. You idiot.
I watched this at a faster playback speed and still understood the gentleman. Subtitles are available, supporting text is on screen, and there are visuals...not sure there was a need to call someone an idiot ;)
I think it’s pretty poor judgement of St Johns to pick a strong accent person to give presentation. Suggesting people Use the “subtitles” like some suggest is also ridiculous. Suggesting people sign up and attend courses if they can’t understand is even more ridiculous... not everyone can afford the course, financially and/or time wise. People have come to this video in order to learn a helpful, perhaps lifesaving skill. The least St Johns can do is make the presentation as clear as possible for people to watch without the need for subtitles, or waiting months for a course as I’d have to do in my rural area. And NO this isn’t a racist thing, I’d have an issue with a young blonde blue eyed female with a strong, hard to understand Swedish accent. It’s just common sense....
CutiePie here’s your medal for your useful comment 🥇
The emergency services number is 911
Not everybody is from america
You aren’t meant to do mouth to mouth anymore.
It is now being rerecommended again, as of the start of this year, by the resuscitation council UK
I love to administer mouth to mouth resuscitation.
Thanks for a great video BUT... some people will struggle to understand this presenter. For something as important as this, a key priority should be to find a presenter whose accent is as *easy* to understand as possible for as *many* people as possible, ideally a professional voice over artist (or a radio/TV presenter). And this is *not* a racist comment - I'm happy for someone of any race to present it.

Should get an actor to dub this. Half of what he says is unintelligible. Or get someone who speaks CLEARLY to present this important video for heaven's sake. One might want to play the video whilst practising or performing the act, and there is no way one could read subtitles at the same time.
