- Danny Gatton Trio @ DC World Jazz Fest on The Freedom Plaza - Wash DC 7 3 94
Video shot by Dave Redman (the name he uses but not his real name) but I had the Stereo FM broadcast on cassette and we dubbed that on and re-sync'd as needed.
After the show there is the interview the WPFW DJ did with Danny - about 6-7 minutes of audio only
I remember living in Wash DC 1980-83 and I would see Danny Gatton perform in clubs in Georgetown. As one sees in this video/concert, he plays some amazing guitar. I've seen hundreds of great guitar players all over USA and London. And with the exception of Jimmy Page, Jeff Beck, Ritchie Blackmore, Eric Clapton, Joe Satriani, Roy Clark, and Joe Pass, I don't think I've seen anyone that has blown me away with his technical skill like Danny Gatton. He has such command of the fretboard and plays chords I haven't seen since watching Joe Pass in my youth. Truly a shame that he died when he did. The world lost a great artist and the finest telecaster player I've ever seen.
I never knew of him and his posse until
Yesterday and I have been jaw agape.
He moves me with his skill.
Surrounds himself with amazing musicians and gives them room to shine too.
I took a friend to see this band play at a Holiday Inn sunday brunch in Tysons Corner, Va. He had no idea what was coming. It was incredible.
Would have loved to see him get all the recognition he deserved. In my humble opinion he could smoke anyone at there own game.
He has.
I have admired Danny's playing for so many years, but I have never seen this video and I am absolutely awestruck. This is beyond belief. Such a pure, living and spiritual being. Ethereal.
Holy God! I first read about Danny in GP, and now with all the wonderful footage all the accolades stand firm ...He was unbelievable ..... amazing ability to anticipate a groove 8 bars before it's about to happen... like a true sports athlete... they only ever appear once every decade and all the rest are just background noise.
Unworldly ... the best there ever was & probably ever will be
Just fabulous how flawless his playing was ! Thanks for sharing this wonderful concert
Show in the Danny's year death,so Sad but your songs is here, thanks Danny:)!
Danny is of course on fire, but so are Tim Biery and John Previti. So much talent on this stage.
I am so glad that I got to see this guitar legend live! One of the best ever!
D.G. was an incredible musician. He was in his own league.
Thanks to all who post these vids much appreciated Danny is the best no wonder they called him the humbler
Give the drummer some!!!!
Danny Gatton - Guitar, John Previti - Bass, Timm Biery - Drums
An unforgettable performance! Thank you to whoever posted this-possibly last public display of Danny’s dazzling talent! Really so sad he’s gone, but will never be forgotten. Harlem Nocturne and Secret Love were outstanding on here. Drummer and Bass player, incredible too! RIP Danny, I love you.
GREAT PLAYING!!!!!! THANKS FOR POSTING!!!!
Awesome... Thank you for this show! Danny on his custom doubleneck... very cool. Sadly, this is just three month before his tragic death. There'll never be another
Amazing gig! Amazing band!
Amazing artist. One of my faves !
I believe we’re all born with special talents that only a limited amount of us find. Thankfully, Danny is in that small percentage that somehow found his calling! Wish he was still with us.
Thanks a lot to whoever posted! In my quarantine depression, I have been listening and trying to figure out some of Danny's techniques... I wish I could find a tab or lesson on Song of India I have the structure of it down but can't figure out all those double stops he pulls off. Such an inspiration wish he was still around...
Great instrumental Danny was the best
You know Danny Gatton falls into that category of: 'There is no such thing as the greatest guitarist in the world, but if there was................................................'
John Berry Danny Gatton was sent by God to remind Creation how cool the guitar could be
... With Danny Gatton there Is only the fused and progressive everything... thankyou, thankyou, thankyou...
..it has to be Roy Buchanan. He didn`t play his guitar, he made it sing
Wow - super playing from all 3. If only I could have been there...
Incredible as always... no one better!
I got to see Danny in ‘88, he amazes me even more now. Just like Shawn Lane, humble genius, gone too soon.
What a great group! They're all great, not just Danny even if he's the star. With this group he should have been able to make it on the jazz scene. Music is such a rough business.
Insanely amazing...
And 3 months later he took his own life - so sad, you just never know about someone's personal demons. He was amazing.
A few years ago I tried to commit suicide by jumping off the roof of our 4-story apartment building. Family members piled I'm and stopped me, Thank God. While I was in the hospital, a man from our State Mental Health Department came to see me to evaluate for treatment planning. We talked for a long time, and the finally got it through my head that a man who commitis suiside DESTROYS HIS FAMILY (especially his children), and causes much sorrow to friends co-workers, and, in Danny's Case, a growing army of fans who could not get enough of his guitar mastery. I had never heard of DANNY before his suicide, probably because he east on the East Coast, and we lived on the West. However, for some reason after
my discharge meeting at the hospital, he took me aside, asked if I ever had heard about Danny Gatton, the 'World's Greatest Unknown Guitar Player? When I
replied that I had not, but as a retired pro guitar player i would like to check out this guy. I got my hands, on a copy of " 88 Elmira Street:" and the rest is history. My favorite tune is " Quiet Village." Think i will put on a cut right now.
So very tragic that some of the greatest talents in their art form committed suicide - Vincent Van Gogh, Robin Williams, and others. Danny Gatton is in that category. And then there are those who died of drug overdoses (we won't ever know who among them was suicidal or did it by accident). And then the likes of Curt Cobain, Jim Morrison, Keith Moon, Duane Allman, Jon Bonham to name a few who died by accident. And then the freak accidents like SRV and Randy Rhoades. What a waste, what a shame. I won't even discuss the greats who were possibly murdered. That's another long tragic list
@@danharris3925 I was lucky enough to be living in Washington DC from 1980-92. I got to see Danny Gatton and Roy Buchanan many times and in small clubs, up close. Both of them were phenomenal. The concert above was typical of Danny's abilities. what made him so amazing was how he could play dozens of chords, one right after the other with such fluidity. There are few guitarists I've ever seen/heard do that besides Danny. Joe Pass was one of them and unfortunately, I never saw Wes Montgomery, but you can find him on records/dc's/etc. who also had such command of the fret board. I saw Joe Pass perform twice and attended one of his clinics. Truly a master. As a guitarist, I would suggest you give these others a listen, especially of you like jazz. Alice Cooper said that Glenn Campbell was the greatest guitarist in the world. Eddie Van Halen dreamed of having guitar lessons by him. You might also want to check out Roy Clark and Yngvei Malsteen back in the 1980's. I hope all of this proves helpful.
Yeah.
Marilyn Monroe took her own life too...
Right.
Never know the whole story.
Yeah, personal demons indeed. Actually, he was contending with a medical condition that he apparently thought was hopeless.
Who gives this a thumbs down??? Please explain......
I don't know, but they are so confused.
Australian
Thank You so much for posting this! This band has blown my mind! What an amazing performance. It's much harder to accept him not being here now, however thank you for for sharing this..
Thanks for posting. What an incredible display of majestic sonic beauty from Danny and his band. Incredible!
Incredible show as always. Sadly there were so many distractions backstage
that was a bit unnerving.
Glorious
Muy bueno Danny Gatton uno de los mas grandes guitarristas pese a ser poco conocido en el mundo.
There should be a movie about this legend
When i see him play Sleep Walk he sounds like one of Americas greatest musicians
World class players all around.
Alien,thank you for this
Would have liked to see Danny with Roy Buchannan, Tom Principato and Nils Lofgren all D.C. players for some time. Saw Roy's gig with Nils on a documentary. I can dream haha!!
That drummer.......
I'm generally not the biggest fan of the Tele sound or country inflected guitar for that matter... but this guys super-powers on guitar are something I'm not sure I've ever seen...
Anyone have the setlist?
The last video footage of Danny Gatton.
Band is great too! Alan, is that you on bass?
Fearless.
No one has yet to mention Danny using a Duracell D-Cell battery for a slide starting at 12:20......
Great
Ohmigod - his longtime bandmates deserted him for Broadway and tourist money that HAD to contribute to his depression - I am obsessed with DG and why he left us - if you look at that DC crowd they weren't responding with a level of enthusiasm appropriate to the quality of the performance which is LEGENDARY! And that fancy new guitar is great but it doesn't have the elemental tone of his early 50's Fender Nocaster that he traded for a car - again, not a decision that would alleviate your depression once you thought about it-
Knew the bible half as good as guitar,he'd still be around
🌹
The Humbler 🎼👌
I wonder if this was his last gig?
Covers all the bases @ anytime........☮️🎼🔛🌎
smokin'
Wow
Takes few moments for the video.....
There's also the WPFW-FM interview right after the video...which mostly has a matrix audio done by Dave Redman who shot the video - I gave him the WPFW recording but he started his camera late and now I've added the full audio and some graphics.
Отличный был музыкант,очень жаль,что он решил так рано завершить свой жизненный путь......Да простит Господь его душу.
Great show, great artists but that flying DC Lottery thing is low rent. Has to go!
44:45 45:10
Is it me or is Previti’s intonation off a little bit here?
Cameraman is awful 😅😂
Danny, your comedy routine is wonderful but you should get your money back for those music lessons.
Get a load of this idiot.
Sounds like a joke...
@@mikelindsey796 Yeah, I don't get the punchline.
Real funny. Coming from someone who can only pick his nose.
Too many notes all the time, sorry, not a fan
I absolutely adore Danny Gatton but i have to admit, a lot of this performance was all over the place.
Was anybody sober?
The people walking around in the background are kind of annoying.
you’ve never been to a festival or fairgrounds with live music before have you
