  • Jimmy Olander's opening lick on Diamond Rio's "Meet In The Middle," let the listener know that they were about to hear something new. His double-bender meets banjo fingerstyle sensibilities created a singular sound that would lead off most of the band's hits over the next 3 decades. Today, we sit down with Jimmy in his home studio and get the full story of his climb from out-of-work banjo player, to double bender Tele man with multi-platinum success. Jimmy also gives us the inside scoop on his Joe Glaser-built Telecaster style guitars, and how he began using Matchless amps.

My dad was in the house band at Kewadin Casino in the early 90's. Diamond Rio came through and were playing in the other room. I remember standing in a room off the side of the stage listening to Jimmy O's Matchless just CRANKING. Killer tone. Monster player! I was in heaven! I could have stayed in there all night!!

Jimmy told me he played Matchless amps many years ago when in an autograph line at the National FFA Convention. I skipped all the other members of the group just to have time to talk guitar stuff with Jimmy Olander. I was an Agriculture Teacher in need of another amp because my solid state Yamaha G212 was giving me trouble. As my students were getting autographs, I was talking Matchless amps with Jimmy. I was in guitar heaven. I had never heard of Matchless but when I got back home in Alabama I called my friend that worked in a prominent Atlanta music store and bought a DC30. I’ve been able to visit with Jimmy 3 times and he was always gracious.

I played banjo and acoustic guitar in that same show at Fiesta Texas in the mid 90’s when it was owned by Opryland. The guy who’d fly in from TN would tell me Jimmy played this same show. Even as a banjo player he knew I’d be a Jimmy O fan. I wasn’t smart enough to touch a telecaster until a few years ago. Over the years banjo has made me tens of dollars.

Thumb picks on guitar are great, rhythm and LEAD- Johnny Winter
    Lester Flatt
    Carter Stanley
Jim Eanes was using one when I sang and played with him.
Old timers and beginners can get better bluegrass rhythm with a thumb pick. It's easier to snap your thumb across the strings rather than a flatpick, "held tightly while relaxing your wrist".
I'm a mandolin and guitar flatpicker but I think I'll be flogging rhythm into my 90s with a thumb pick.

Thanks for dragging us along Zac. This was maybe my favorite interview of ANY musician, ever. But I'm a big fan of Diamond Rio and Jimmy O.
I was bouncing around bar stages when Diamond Rio hit the charts. I can remember spending hours in the band bus trying to figure out how to play those parts without the benders. Sometimes I was able to do it, sometimes not. My best was Mirror, Mirror but it took me A LOT of hours practicing to get those lead licks down.
Thanks again! This brought back some great memories for me, and I'm hoping some good memories for Mr. Olander as well.

I totally apologize for taking the good decent hard working people that drink our beer for granted. We are sorry for calling you fratty and out of touch, you are the best people in the world just like you are. We will never make such a stupid mistake again and from this point on our marketing will reflect this. Please forgive us and buy our beer again. If you think this is the route all of the other errant brain cells at Bud Light should have immediately took leave a like before those other obviously abnormal brain cells kill me.

Hey Zac stop knocking the telecaster custom . The great Brit rock guitarist Mick Green - imspiration for Pete Townsend & Wilko Johnson - used one as his weapon of choice for most of his career . Check out live '70's youtube clips of live Pirates gigs . That band was really something . & Albert Collins too played a tele with a Gibson humbuker in the neck position & really rocked out . But maybe it's not the sound that country guitarists are loooking for . All the best m8 - love the channel .

That Greven guitar is his version of the Prairie State. A very large jumbo OM type of thing. He sent me what may have been the prototype of it back in the early 2000's. I had a website at the time which was dedicated to all things acoustic-guitar related in terms of the lutherie involved with them. He sent it to me as part of a project we had at the time. I played that guitar for a few months then sent it back. I believe John re-topped it for some reason. It was certainly a hoss! Can't say enough good about John Greven. Because of him I got my business started and it's still going strong 20 years later.
