I was at this concert. My buddy and I were hitching from Massachusetts to Florida when we met up with a couple of other young people that were going to this concert. I remember we crashed the gates and there really no way security could stop the crush of humanity going over the fences that day. It was so unreal I never in my wildest dreams could I have imagined an experience like that. Rock on all the brothers and sisters that are still with us that experienced this historic event.

For some reason I was trying to remember this guy the other night. His name finally came into focus and here I am today. I remember seeing him for the first time in Georgetown...possibly the Bayou in the 70's. If I remember correctly somebody pushed him down to the stage in a shopping cart wrapped in a sheet and dumped him out. I instantly became a Root Boy fan for life and did my best to never miss another appearance.

So sad he's gone.

I know I used to be plugged into the Sndbd at Adams ALL OF THE TIME. BLESS MURPH- & ISN'T EVERY FRIENDLY SNDMAN IN THE WORLD NAMED "MURPH"? He was ALWAYS welcome to anything I taped. From Buddy Guy & Jr Wells to Henny Youngman & anything in-between but the only thing that he actually said he really would like to have was Henny Youngman! Not Jorma, Hunter (pouting in the Dressing Room because his newest stuff wasn't going well w/ the crowd. I'm watching him pissed off as Murph was comforting him 'Some nights are like that.' "Mmph!! He'd Autographed my extremely rare Test Pressing of the Promo Only Sampler Series of Tales of the Great Rum Runners' & he knew that was a RARE one (as was a Garcia, Ace, Kieth & Donna, Rhythm Devils {'Diga' or 'Play River Music' & the extra special Ned Lagin/Lesh 'Seastones'- those were all at Skip's Yesterday & Today Records (Rockville). Hunter asked me as he was Signing 'Rum Runners'- "How did you get a copy of ''Tales of.....'?" I knew he wanted a romantic anecdotal saga of Love & Loss, angst, passion, luck so I told him "Twenty bucks." (NOT Dollars- bucks to make it as 'gutterly'' as possible. He was a bit of a Prima Donna so I just gave him the truth. I had the run of Adams basically:Jr Walker, Koko Taylor, The (Original) Blues Busters Duo of Paul & Catfish - that was before either of those 2 lps on Landslide (label out of Georgia) I believe. Tears when Paul did 'All That You Dream'. She [Bonnie] didn't want it so we did it!" 🎼 I've been do-ow-own.." Tears..."This is for Lowell -wherever you are"-> " Willin' " & BIG tears! Nils' last 3 nights of freedom I was just going & he was nice so I said I was recording & if he gave me an address I'd send him 'his' copies. 'Oh, okay.' The only 1 that ever got ugly was Al Kooper who was a crack head in '84(±) & kept telling us "I been... up playin'... video games for the last 3 days & -whew!" It was a few months after the Reunion of the Blues Project did very well & I was plugged in of course for that. Al Kooper was the ONLY 1 who EVER really demanded that I give him the tape(s); I did just to keep it cool w/Murph so he wouldn't have any problems but that 'short shorts' guy never even paid me for the blanks much less the Fact that I NEVER allowed any Song to be cut in the XL||-S 90's run off. Never (including all day at Live AID in Philly. I was on the --6:30-- NBC4 NEWS picking up the 4 Tix I'd reserved for 3 Friends & me to go to Philly later in the night so I could get some sleep before. I'd just arrived from Boulder, CO & called from my Friends' house- WE actually met at a Dead Show Garcia's B•Day/Oklahoma maybe the parking space in Texas the next day & I deduced that we'd been neighbors in Rockville across the street from Chestnut Lodge on Montgomery Avenue (relatives lived NEXT to that place & they'd lived on the street ACROSS from the driveway to Chestnut Lodge (rest home to D. Knotts & Jonathan Winters). Each had said if recognized & sociably walking around the area- 'seen' there 'cause "I don't know who I AM anymore." It was a sanatorium & they wanted to get the homes next to the 'Lodge' as halfway houses. Condos now I hear. We might know each other but I was pretty mobile then.... We've got to get together! You video'd my favorite show in my Life; it was at The Wax- NICKSILVER [10-4-83]. I'd just seen Dinosaurs in Denver 9-16-83 & I missed the plane to Salt Lake City for the next 1 ! Two weeks later- after Dinos in Denver at the Rainbow Theater- & back in home town area, I asked a Friend if he wanted to go see the best Show in his Life possibly. 'Sure!' after I said who was in the line up. I was actually embarrassed re the low turn out & from the center 'You want to go sit in the front of Cipollina? I knew he'd be on S-L's Mic from 2 weeks ago then! We sat like "Blast Off !" for NICKSILVERin the very front row of Cipollina & Al ! I wound up seeing them again in SF w/'Spirit In The Sky' Fuzz Bassist Doug Kilmer & no Dead factor though he fit nicely didn't he? It was just a little sad that Merle was a ringer hired to fill a few seats. If you're into Hot Tuna- they're playing 3 nights in late September out here at The Freight & Salvage in Berkeley & mi casa-? The least I can do for the Gent who shot NICKSILVER at The Wax on Bets, yes? I used to have audio tapes from 2-3 different people as I just wanted to watch & listen then ! You didn't happen to record The ROCHES at The Wax on the 'Another World' Tour for that album (or any other one) did you? Dave be9revolution@gmail.com

Also, that's not Jam Up by Tommy Ridgely, it's Hand Clappin' by Red Prysock. Anne Jolene (sic) is Angelique from Billy's second album, Shakin' At The High School Hop is High School Confidential (Jerry Lee Lewis hit), and Don't Touch Baby is properly named Please Don't Touch (Johnny Kidd And The Pirates, early UK rocker) and I Want My Baby Back Again is Mathilda by Cookie And The Cupcakes. Lest you think I'm griping about those errors, HECK NO! Thank you, Mark, for posting this and the others by Uptown Rhythm Kings, et al. No idea what the names of the immigrant and agent orange songs were or who wrote them. I think at this point, Billy was trying to figure out what he wanted to do next and what would work for him as the rockabilly revival had ended. That's why the repertoire is all over the map (i.e. a jangle pop version of an early Stones tune.) He had been filling in on bass with Cathy, Joe Stanley and Buddy in Stanley's band which had a house gig as the oldies band at a P.G. County crab shack (Yesterday's Lounge?). Basically, Billy hired them away for his band.

a litlle goof on personnel -- Johnny Combs was on bass, Tommy Gross (Tommy G.) on guitar -- probably Tommy's last night -- not sure what Cathy's last name was; Billy hired her with Joe Stanley (sax player) from Stanley's band.

No tickets left 2 hours before, so I went around to the side and the tour bus was getting a flat fixed and the stage door was propped open. Zing! Watched fabulous Thunderbirds warm up... once in I was as good as with the band. Ended up sitting center front second row for Stevie... Just kept moving when people showed up and that's where I ended and nobody showed there. Two Friends made it in with me from KU, but I had to go back out and get them and pull it off twice. Factola. That first song he came out with smoke across the stage as he shuffled feet and GLIDED sideways across the stage from stage left to center stage just flyyyying on the guitar. Everyone would just stare at Stevie because it was something incredible. Really nothing like watching that. Then there was an encore and Jimmy Vaughan and Stevie did a double neck guitar solo with one reaching around the other from behind as they both played that one guitar!
