Hi Brian, I live in England and i am converting all my rolling stock to Kadee using NEM plug in couplers and also whisker couplers. I have started building a new railway layout after a 40 year break from the hobby, so its never to late to start. Thanks for the video . I think Kadee are a great quality product and have noticed that more and more English model railway layouts are changing over to Kadee, especially one's that involve a lot of shunting. Happy moddelling Martin Guyat
quality video!i The bachmann hoppers are actually a prototype of the National Steel Car 4 bay hopper, made in Canada and exported to the U.S. in the 70's. What is not protoypical is the paint job. They are still great looking models and I own a few in N scale.
Those little loops on the side of the KD coupler box is for screws.. I have a cigar box full of KD couplers boxes.I favor the #148 since its easier to install-no centering spring.
Whisker couplers would be a preferred choice. I never bought them before and I understand they are expensive compared to a #5, and seeing they do the same job, i'll save money and use these for now.
I would like to have seen a comparison between the old and new coupler. I would also like to know the reason you changed the couplers? Thanks. Greg in TN
Nice video. I have a lot of rolling stock I want to fix up. perhaps you could do a video taking that lifelike and converting it to frame mounted? I've got lots of truck mounted crap too. The whole process such as the truck change and so on.
advice..if u get the #151 whisker coupler u don't have to deal with the metal gearbox or centering thing...whisker couplers are just drop in and go..and they are all around the same price range
I'm brand new to the hobby and the terminology is a totally different language to me. My wife gave me a Bachman model train set HO scale as my starter set. Well I recently purchased some old Tyco cars not knowing there is a huge difference in couplers. Can any only tell me what or how I can change this to work with my Bachman set? I appreciate you time and advice in advance. One more question, What's difference in all the Kadee couplings?
On the Kadee site it only shows the #5 as only including the centering plate and the couple with the magnet, what's the part with the loops and where do I get it?
Thanks for the video ... well done! I have a suggestion: nix the music. As a viewer, I find it distracting. A question: why are you wearing surgical gloves?
gatewaysolo104 I do it. I clean the track more often. Metal wheels are best. Truck-mounted mounted coupler don't always work very well in reverse depending on the car. I just changed one to body mount cause I couldn't get a good coupler height otherwise, That was a very rare occurrence.
yeah, my newer vids i have the music turned way down more.. Reason I wear gloves is because when i go to weather it, it doesn't have finger prints on it.
nyc3001 Your free to do what you want. I have found that short freight cars will couple on curve with the centering spring. Keep in mind I'm talking about cars the length of old fashioned refrigerator/box cars.
So did you test the height? was it ok? That looked too easy. :) Do cars with couplers attached to the car do well? I thought they all had them attached to the trucks?
Whisker couplers are cool but they cost more and that is BS so I stick to the #5 couplers myself. When Whisker couplers are the same or less I will start to buy them.
Great video for people who are new at installing kadee couplers! The look of these couplers is awesome, i have changed most of my N scale models to this brand.. Cant stand that "box" couple look lol
So what about installing new couplings on body or truck mounted couplings. What about NEM. What about tension lock. What about Hornby or Bachmann Branchline. You leave so much out of this instructional video that you should have put in
Jimi Killz If someone's even GOING to make something like this they need to include every or most types of couplings. M'kay? It's not my fault he's not said most types of couplings, and thus I am somewhat annoyed by it
Music is more tolerable than some so don't worry. Actually you don't need it but what ever floats your boat. I can not use those gloves. Why use them if you are not using chemicals?? I worked in a photographing plant starting back in the late 60'sasnd even then working with the chemicals, I didn't (no do I now) use gloves. They take away some of the finer feelings that you sometimes need.
I agree and wish i never had the music. Sadly these are old files and the music was added directly to vid. to lose the music now, I would have to silence the whole video including me.

Great video! Next time, no music. It takes away what you're trying to show/instruct. Good job though!

Just some advice, should you pick up any Mantua Classics cars. Their couplers are often a bit low, I had to use some Kadee underset couplers for them.

LifeLike typicaly has truck mounted couplers on rolling stock. Bachmann has a couplers on the body.

@aces116 Cheers Mate.. I figured it was for other mounting options.
what do i use for cars that have life like, ihc, tyco, ahm trucks
is it bad that I am running the rolling stock with the plastic trucks with built in couplers lol?

Is it necessary to install centering springs in Kadees? I've never done it because I want to couple on curves (and it's not prototypical).

@MonsterRailroad I'm happy with Kadee #5's.
So did you test the height? was it ok? That looked too easy. :) Do cars with couplers attached to the car do well? I thought they all had them attached to the trucks?
jack002tuber I rarely have problems with coupler height on Bachmann trains when changing them to Kadees.
why not use # 148?
as a novice train enthusiast i appreciate the knowledge. and now my kids think i listen to rave music and im cool...lol..

Cool.. the one i bought came with metal wheels.

+connor kennell this is his first time doing this. Why don't you go post YOUR video, and we'll see if it's even half as good as this one...

Thank you.
You're welcome!
EVERY DAY I'M COUPLIN'
Lucky you!

Nice tip, thanks.

Your hands are in the way, hard to see what you are doing
Yeah, sorry about that. I was very rookie at doing vids back then.

the music is very distracting listening to you. Lose the music..
