The Joker laughing while falling to his death is not a defence mechanism. The Joker want's to prove that everyone is like him. Everyone will murder and give into chaos. Look at the interrogation scene where he tells Batman that he’ll have to break his one rule. Batman views his rule about not killing as important, it’s what separates him from the criminals. He want's Batman to kill him because he has no regard for his own well being. When Batman throws him over he feels he’s won he’s corrupted the Batman and that’s also why he sounds frustrated/disappointed when Batman rescues him.
As he said earlier. It's about sending a message.

Exactly. Every single one of his games is about making people into killers or proving that they already are. He wanted to make ordinary people murder Coleman Reese, he wanted a boatload of civilians prove they were as bad or worse as a boadload of criminals by killing them, and he wanted to prove Batman was the same as him by killing, preferably him.

The old man who mouthed off to the Joker at the party (he said, "We're not afraid of thugs!") , and who the Joker says, "You remind me of my father. I hated my father!" to, is played by US Senator Patrick Leahy of Vermont. He's an actual, sitting United States Senator who is still in office.
Senator Leahy grew up a GIGANTIC fan of the Batman comics, and has made appearances in six different Batman films. He donates all his paychecks and residuals from those films to a children's library in his home town. He's said he's perfectly willing to keep making cameo appearances, especially since it helps him support the library.

He wasn’t as strong as Batman, who could rise above his pain and use it. Dent became a victim to it. The Joker’s plan actually does make a whole lot of sense when you think about it. While you were grossing out over Dent’s face in hospital, Joker was explaining his plan perfectly. I always felt that the changing story behind the scars was one of the coolest things, but felt they needed a third story. Then I found out originally that third story was in the script of the third movie. Joker was supposed to give the third story at his trial with all his make up off. Then Heath Ledger died and that plan went out the window. Also apparently Two-Face was supposed to be rampaging across the city during that third movie. But with the plan destroyed they rewrote the ending of the second movie and re-shot it so Dent dies at the end of the second.

That’s not really true. Goyer wrote scripts for two films which Nolan condensed into a single script. Originally Dent wouldn’t show up until the third movie. They didn’t change the ending because of Heath’s death

@@MikeTaffet There were a variety of rumors surrounding it. I'm only relaying on the one I heard most and believed based on sources. Nolan wasn't originally sure he was going to do a third movie so he merged the scripts so it could stand alone. It was originally designed as a two part affair. But they did leave it open to continue the Joker storyline and rumor has it, had loose plans to do so, using some of the scrapped material, if they continued to the third (which was still unsure). So apparently they'd keep the trial scene(s), just without Dent running it (which pre-merge Dent wasn't Two-Face yet). I'd heard Dent's death in two was tacked on, since he wasn't set up to carry a main villain role for a whole movie the way Joker was. So any chance of continuing with him being the main villain would be awkward at best if they did continue. I could be wrong on some of it, since this is parsed together from a variety of rumors, but that's what I've heard.

@@chuckmanion1128 The court scenes in the 3rd movie would certainly have made more sense with Two-Face than they did with Scarecrow, so I suspect you are on to something there. Seems they had issues with continuity after Heath passed away and they didn't manage to address them very well, killing off Two-face and not having any Joker really accelerated an end to the franchise. Once they had closer on the league of Assassins, that was Bale's Batman done and done.

Literally a straight up lie. Filming was done when Heath died. No scenes were rewritten or reshot.

If I'm wrong, I'm wrong. These are just the rumors I remember. There were a lot of rumors, surrounding the movie at the time. Its quite possible I was duped by a false rumor or two. If what you're saying is true, some of the merged scripts rumors may have got mixed with changed ending rumors, which is probably where that came from. The movie is also a decade old so a lot of the info I remember from back then is a little fuzzy.

Fun Fact: During the exploding hospital scene the part where Heath stops and messes with the trigger was improvised. There wasn't suppose to be a delay in the explosives.

I just found your channel and I know this was posted several months ago. I just have to say how impressed I am with your after movie discussion. For a single time watching The Dark Knight, you had such a thoughtful understanding on the movie and characters portrayed. Most folks don't seem to get half of what you picked up and really delved into the psychology. Don't ever wonder if you are 'dumb', quite the opposite. Keep up the great content and hope you enjoy many more movies.
