- I'm only concentrating on games that were spinoffs/sequels/complimentary pieces to NES and SNES games, so no Pokémon. Original Game Boy games only, no Game Boy Color (doesn't work with Super Game Boy)

Does anyone else love these Classic Alex videos from 5+ years ago? This channel's always been great and just gets better over time 👌
The Final Fantasy Legends series was great. That and some hidden gems like Ninja Boy totally make the GB still worth playing in 2020 and on.
I know this is an old vid, but i watched it for the first time today. I was surprised that we didn't see Final Fantasy Adventure! It's actually the first game in the Mana series and the prequel to Secret of Mana on SNES.
I second that nomination.
I had a Super GameBoy. Every time I was out on family trips, I always brought my GameBoy, and I was always excited to come back home, and transfer the game I was playing, to my Super GameBoy. I played A Link to the Past, Kirby, my favourite Donkey Kong game version was GameBoy. So I played that a lot. The Super GameBoy gave every game color, and I love how the GameBoy version of Donkey Kong, Mario was basically an acrobat 😄
I had a good collection of GameBoy games, and I loved played them all on my old tv.. The Super GameBoy was a must.
There were several Game Boy Color games that were compatible with the old Game Boy, and thus, also Super Game Boy, and some of these black cart GBC games even had expanded Super Game Boy features. For example, Link's Awakening DX had its own special border and palettes on SGB that weren't present in the original release. As for complimentary pieces, I'd suggest Donkey Kong Land 1 and 3 instead of Donkey Kong Land 2. DKL2 is the closest to a watered down port to the SNES counterparts, whereas DKL1 is a completely original adventure with brand new archetypes and enemies, and DKL3 has completely new worlds, levels, and a brand new story and time attack mode. Just bringing that up, DKL2 was a the wrong choice, despite DKC2 often being the preferred SNES DK game.
Yeah thats exactly what I thought. And why choose the worst Turtles game? The first one is pretty terrible. Second is better and third being the best.
As long as the GBC cartridge does not have a clear shell, it is playable on the Super Game Boy.
Grey shell: (original/pocket) GB game
Black shell: GBC game which is compatible with the old GB and the Super Game Boy
Clear shell: Game which is compatible only with the GBC (and GBA, Game Boy Player, DS)
I had just commented pretty much this same thing, then realized someone else had already done it. Yeah, as long as it's not a clear-case GBC game, it should be compatible if not fully supported.
That King Zing Sting boss in DKL 2… He moves so fast at the end of the fight that nothing short of a lucky shot will get you past him.
I remember borrowing Final Fantasy Legend 2 from a friend in Middle School, must have played through the first half like 6 or 7 times because the game kept losing my save at the same spot every goddamned time. I ended up never giving it back to him for some reason (I think he just never asked for it back and then he moved after 8th grade) and then let my neighbor borrow it a few years later, who lost it and I guilt tripped him into getting his Mom to buy me a new copy. So after I got my fresh new copy, he ended up finding my original copy and I was like whelp that's not my problem you shouldn't have lost in in the first place.
And that's how a swindled a kid into buying me a new copy of a game that wasn't even mine to begin with.
I love stories like this
Final Fantasy LEgend II is so great!!! One of my favorite games all-time, and you're spot on about the music. So many epic tunes!
I wanted it so bad when I was like 8 and never did get to try it. I always stared at it in consumers catalog just wondering.
Cool idea for a vid. I loved my SGB. Being able to draw your own border frame, assign color pallets (albeit only 4) to gray-scale games, and it could freeze the state of games that normally hid the screen when paused, which let me kind of cheat on some time based puzzle games. :)
"Turtles - fall of the foot Clan" and "gargoyles Quest" were two of my first games for the "Game Boy" along with the pack in "Tetris".
1995 my 6th grade classmate let me borrow his links awakening.. I beat it a hundred times that summer and never gave it back to him.. I still have it to this day, easily the greatest Gameboy game ever.
I love stories like this. My old roommate lent me his copy of FF7, the lease expired and we both moved and I never saw him again and I still have it
Moejii - I kept Final Fantasy borrowed from jy cousin for 20 years.
Something's more nostalgic about buying or getting a game from a friend than online.
I lent my copy of road rash on the megadrive to a friend at school, but never got it back. Gutted.
I lent somebody my copy of FFIX and never got it back.
Hey Drunk! You may have already mentioned this game already on your channel, but have you played Donkey Kong (1994) for Gameboy? Really cool game that looks pretty nice when used with a Super Gameboy. Weird to say that a Nintendo game could be considered a hidden gem, but I'd love to see it get some more spotlight, especially in a sequel video to this one.
I was always confused on why DK 94's formula is ignored after Mario VS. Donkey Kong.
Really enjoyed this one. I might actually check some of these out eventually. Great writing by the way, I hope you continue your videos with this level of quality.
4:28 Dude literally throws a Tetris piece at you.
Growing up in the 90s I used to love playing my game boy games in the big screen thanks to the super game boy. Sometimes on some games like Super Mario Land and even GoGo tank I would actually customize the colors to make it look like as I'm progressing through the game the time of day is changing.
The first time I ever "smashed my piggy bank" was to get a Super Game Boy for $60 at Toys-R-Us
gargoyles quest is one of my faves too.. brilliant game !!
C954-PYTF. I still remember that password to this day.
I have the super gameboy, that was one of my best purchases ever! I loved the weird color-schemes and backgrounds you could stick on to your viewport.
Speaking of Link's Awakening, there's an awesome Gameboy title that was only released in Japan, whose engine Link's Awakening was actually based on. It's called Kaeru no Tame ni Kane wa Naru which is referred to as For the Frog the Bell Tolls in English, although google translate claims it means "It Will Be Fun for Frog" lol. It's an adventure game kinda like Zelda, with side scrolling dungeon elements (think the basements in Link's Awakening dungeons). It has a kind of auto-battle system where you'll always win against a weak enemy and always die against a strong one until you level up, but its still very fun, endearing, and has some of the most memorable music on the platform. Anyway you can play a translated version via emulator easily.
*Gargoyle's Quest* is really good. It may be my favorite Gameboy game. It's certainly high in my list.
It is really cool
I would argue that Donkey Kong Land 3 is the best out of the three DKL games, and apparently Rare and Nintendo agreed because it got a remaster for the Game Boy Color in Japan. It feels the most different from the original source game, while still being fun and fair. DKL1 is probably the MOST unique, but I wouldn't say that game is also fun and/or fair.
I will never understand why people think that GB games are lesser versions of NES/SNES games.
I have fond memories of playing GB as a child and I always play those games as games that stand on their own. WarioLand for example is a game that could easily be a NES or SNES game. It's vast and extremely enjoyable on long sessions of gameplay.
Long live the GameBoy, an excellent console.
Because they absolutely are, at least of the snes. I would compare the OG gameboy to a portable NES though.
@@MrHomelessHobos cool opinion. I can't actually call it since I technically haven't played LA, but there are probably zero games on the gameboy that I enjoy more than their SNES counterparts.
While we're on the Zelda subject, I prefer OoT or MM
I remember taking my gameboy to school when I was in jr high and some friend lend me mega man 4. It felt soo good playing alone far from anyone while in recess behind the classrooms.
You missed some great gb games like:
Wario Land (Super Mario Land 3) - Play as Wario, who can't die normally and is goofy.
Boomer's Adventure - An interesting bomberman spin off where you dig whole and fill holes, after enemies fall into them.
Batman - Who uses a gun, and follow the tim burton movie.
I thought you would be showing off games, being played on the super gameboy, that got color updates for being played on super gameboy.
Some also got sound updates!
Seth Owens Changed the title to better reflect the content.
Good idea! I'd still like to see the other path!
Glad you made this video - I had operation c for my original game boy and later played FF legends 2 on an emulator and loved it - keep up the good work drunk
I never managed get a SGB either.. I agree. Only had a few GB ones in the 90s. When my GB broke I gave up my few games!!
Now I have a modded GBA so can play all GB, GBC and GBA games in ome place.. in colour.. and on a lovely bright screen!!!!
I just did a vid on my GBA. So pleased with it. GaZ.
It’s a bummer Nintendo didn’t come out with a GameBoy player for the N64. Especially for GameBoy Color games
MegaMan 5 was my favorite to play on the Super Gameboy, I used the theater background when I played lol
Battletoads (the original one for the GB and not the NES remake) was pretty good. It reduced the difficulty level to mortal levels while still being pretty tough.
Battletoads for the Game Boy came out two years after the NES version.
Also, you can get tetris attack on the gameboy.
Was really into the GB a few years back, replaying childhood favourites and discovering new stuff via my GBA SP and a flashcart. It's got a great library. Other games I think would benefit from the larger screen or that are just plain fun:
Super Mario Land 3: Wario Land, Wario Land II
Donkey Kong ‘94
Gradius: The Interstellar Assault/Nemesis II
Bionic Commando
Ninja Gaiden Shadow
Kirby’s Dream Land 1 & 2
Mega Man III & IV
Rolan’s Curse II
Revenge of the Gator
Mole Mania
Final Fantasy Adventure/Seiken Densetsu
Hammerin’ Harry/Daiku no Gensan 1 & 2
Contra: Alien Wars
Parodius
ZAS
Looney Tunes
Trip World
Banishing Racer
Catrap
Kwirk/Puzzle Boy 1 & 2
Kirby’s Pinball Land
Ninja Boy 2
Pop ‘n Twinbee
Battletoads
Blaster Master Jr./Bomber King 2
Game & Watch Gallery 1-3
TMNT 3: Radical Rescue
Avenging Spirit
Momotarou Dengeki
Ultraman Ball
Trax
Mercenary Force
King of Fighters '95 & ‘96
Battle Arena Toshinden
Kid Icarus: Of Myths and Monsters
I have some of these games on cartridge, 3ds, and ps4.
Super Mario Land 2 (3ds)
Donkey Kong Land 2 (3ds)
Metroid: The Return of Samus (cartridge and 3ds)
Operation C (Contra Anniversary Collection for ps4)
Castlevania 2 Belmonts Revenge (Castlevania Anniversary Collection for ps4)
All good games. I never got into Metroid until I saw the first trailer for Metroid Prime back in '02. I found a copy of Metroid 2 four years later, and I regret not using it on the Super Gameboy. Instead I used the Gameboy Player on the Gamecube which gave the colors by default, instead of tinkering around like you could on the SGB.
I mean Pokemon deserve at least a mention the borders and colors for Pokemon yellow is pretty cool
Gargoyle´s Quest
I got this recently.. hyped to try!!
Excellent game, horrible cover art
You should do another video as a part 2 to this so you can expand on it and show off more unknowns in the Gameboy library!
Oh, Fall of the Foot Clan ! I love that game ! short but good !
The only 3 games in my Game Boy collection that I specifically got a Super Game Boy in order to play are Kid Icarus: Of Myths and Monsters, Metroid II: Return of Samus, and the Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening DX...and yes, certain Game Boy Color games are compatible with the Super Game Boy.
Castlevania Adventure 2 is fantastic. The music is phenomenal for a GB game. Also, kinda missing Mystic Quest/FF Adventure/Seiken Densetsu in the list, the first Secret of Mana game.
Try out CV Adv 2 on the Konami Classics collection for GB Color. It's either vol 1 or 4. I forget. Super nice colors.
I recommend the kirby game boy games as well sure they're easy and short (and in the first one you can't steal enemies' powers) but they're great!
Im a big fan of those!
No Pokemon rage here.
Mostly because you actually pronounced it correctly.
I remember being school when I was just and seeing a girl playing Donkey Kong land 2 and not believing what what I was seeing.
Do what?
I dunno what capturing device you use, but my Elgato Game Capture HD records the Super Game Boy no problam'o.
Great video by the way, I never knew there was a sequel to Donkey Kong Land!
A lot of those Konami games were released in 4-game compilations for the Game Boy Color. You can also hack them to boot up directly to the desired game.
Great video, all the gameboy TMNT games are good but I'd recommend radical rescue as it's probably the best metroidvania on the console (sorry metroid 2)
1. Zelda: Links Awakening
2. Super Mario Land 2
3. Donkey Kong Land 2
4. Mega Man 5
5. Operation C
6. Castlevania 2
7. Metroid 2
8. TMNT: Fall of the Foot Clan
9. Gargoyles Quest
10. Final Fantasy Legend 2
11. Harvest Moon
There was a Gamecube version I believe for GBA games
Fall of the foot clan was really so much fun, back when I played it as a kid. Even as a teenager
I had GB and this was the only console I had for a few years until I got SNES. GB is its own console and I love it still. Zelda is the best of the series and Mario Land and Wario were great
Summer of 1995 I lent my 6th grade classmate my copy of Link's Awakening, never got it back after that. Hopefully he enjoyed it.
"Zero Wing" is an awesome side scrolling shooter. Remember "All your base"?
youtube recomended... Best game boy games... naaa.. i don't want to watch a video about that... by 'snes drunk' ok.. bring it on.
It is worth buying a super nes and a super gameboy and a flash cart if possible like ez junior or everdrive(more expensive) I deffo recommend over a handheld or emulator I’m now hooked on gameboy didn’t realise the depth of the library !
Never had a Game Boy back then, but I had the chance to play it and a Game Gear, both were dreams but I did enjoy the moments I spent with these handhelds, funny to see Bart vs. the Juggernauts in your collection as it was the only game I remember playing, aside from Super Mario Land, it was a Game Boy Pocket, if I remember correctly. While in another time I had the chance to play Sonic 2 and Mortal Kombat II on the Game Gear.
I had a super gameboy it was kool, played alot of gameboy games on the snes. My favorites was Links Awakening, and Gorgoyles Quest! I miss the early 90's..
I didn't have a Game Boy as a kid so I went to the pawn shop and got a super game boy and that's how I got all my game boy playing done LOL. Then a few years later I got a Game Boy Color. Like in 1999.
The Donkey Kong Land series looks like a classic black and white movie. I prefer it aesthetically over the colorized DKC on GB Color, which turns more atention to the more primitive graphics.
Great video. Just as an FYI, black GB color carts work with the Super Gameboy too. Opens up the library a little bit... although sadly this would not include either Oracle of Seasons or Oracle of Ages.
+jlaker7 Dragon Warrior 1&2 is delightful on Super Game Boy. Link's Awakening DX, and a nice handful of titles I believe had some fun goodies you could only take advantage of on SGB as well.
Oooo thats good to know. I never realised it had restrictions. Gets complex over time. I have a GBA finally.. so can play all my games in glorious colour with its backlit modded in screen!
Love it in the end of video, how you do reverse browse the guide. Who doesn't that at times. ;-)
Good Morning Germany, 04:19 in the morning before work, watching this video.
Cool topic and definitely one I'd never thought of.
one great game for the Super gameboy was Wario Blast: featuring bomberman (essentially a bomberman Wario crossover game) that was fun on its own since you gradually unlocked permanent power ups, but was really great was the Super gameboy let you play Multiplayer on the TV without the need of a link cable :3
"Gargoyles Quest" and "fall of the Foot Clan" was 2 of my first games for the Game Boy back when I got it in 90/91?
Harvest moon 2 was also playable on the super game boy
It's funny you skip over Pokemon for this, since as an SNES enthusiast who was used to playing RPGs just like Pokemon on that system all the time, the Super GB came in very handy -- and even had special features and color palettes just for the Pokemon games that no one knew about since it was too old to be advertised about anymore by '98.
Donkey Kong 94 is a great game, which has some additional Super Game Boy features. Nemesis (A.K.A. Gradius) is a decent Game Boy game too, a bit more forgiving than some of the other Gradius games.
Imo, i think pokemon should be discluded from all best of lists so ye did me a favor in not including them.
And before people judge me, i love pokemon. But you miss out on showcasing potentially better gems since pokemon always hogs the number 1 slot.
Me either. I LOVE POKEMON. But probably it's overrated. Heck I ignored Pokemon games after I played other stuff, which I regretted.
I loved Gargoyle's Quest and I still own the Final Fantasy 2 & 3's. I'm a huge FF fan so despite my whole Game Boy stash getting stolen in college, they will never get my FFs!!!
0:57 -- I thought Pokémon Gold and Silver worked on SGB?
This makes me wanna play some game boy!
Great video, I really liked you mentioned megaman 5!
nice! one that gets overlooked a lot is 'kirby's blockball.' one of my fav gb titles.
I love that! Finally ordered the original cart as just need to have it for my GBA.
You emntioned the second Ninja Turtle game, but not the third? The third one is a forgotten Metroidvania!
one recommendation i have for anyone who wants to play metroid 2, play am2r (another metroid 2 remake). it is super fun and eliminates most of the problems the original had.
Belmonts Revenge kicks so much ass. easily my favorite classic castlevania. Music was amazing. those first four castles you can complete in any order were more or less training for the real castle. the first ones make you understand your limits with movement and jumping and combat and enemies then the last level throws everything you learned at you at once. last boss is stupid hard though but thats pretty much all castlevanias. I think when the series became kinda metroidvania and started implementing light rpg elements the core fear of the game kinda lost its footing. in classic castlevania, youre not powerful. youre not fast. you better whip at the right time or jump from the right place or youre done. i liked it. i guess it had to evolve but the pace of those classics are awesome when theres lots going on like in belmonts revenge. youre slow as shit but youre constantly approaching situations you need to figure out.
The GameBoy provided years of solid entertainment! If not for the GameBoy, car rides , doctors offices , etc..., would have been horrible.
No idea where my original gameboy and games vanished... (so many of my things vanished growing up)
I had SuperC (Fantastic Contra Game) Metroid2 (also absolutely amazing) Final Fantasy was amazing. Super Mario Land, pretty decent. Sadly I didn't have the newer ones.
Nintendo has had so much quality stuff.
I also had a gamegear which had some good games. But the ratio of great vs mediocre games on gamegear was nowhere near what Nintendo was able to do.
I swear I remember seeing the game boy accessorie made the game boy games colour... am I confusing borders or something? mate had one. P.S:- I used to be a sega and still am to a degree, but thank to you I've found a new addiction...snes emulators, your lists of wanderous games playing while drunk... so thanx
also the games are a different form of 8 bit to the nes as the chips in gb are pretty powerful
looks at ebay prices of Megaman V. I had two copies, and I kept the boxes when I was a kid!
What did you do with them lol
I feel like you should've pointed out that the harvest moon gb port doesn't have respawning weeds. it's like the only game that doesn't.
You're talking "Metroid II" in the context of what SNES collectors might like, and don't even mention the SGB enhancements? The game was MADE for the Super Game Boy!
All I have is super mario world and the 6 golden coins. I actually think that the game is sort of hard. That is because i have to think of the controls as a game boy not Super Nintendo.
YG SLAYER if you think it's hard you should try playing Super Mario Land.
Zelda for Gameboy was great!
"Gargoyle's Quest which, in my opinion, is better than its Super Nintendo counterpart. I know I might be in the minority in that"
I'm with you :D I have a hell of a childhood love/hate relationship with Gargoyle's Quest :D
You do a AWESOME job brotha 👍
No Final Fantasy Adventure or Seiken Densetsu? Blasphemy. It's a prequel to Secret of Mana, thus fulfilling your requirements for the list, and it's a damn great game. I'd say it beats the crap out of the Legend, or SaGa, games, and it's GBA remake Sword of Mana.
I remember playing links awakening on the super game boy and thinking it was magic
Yeah the tmnt game is nice but part 2 and 3 is where its really at
Cough!
Cough!
Tetris Attack
Cough!
Agh!
The AVGN warned me to stay away from that rainbow lol
Love your videos keep it up!!
The super gameboy is amazing. 😀👍🎮
I feel like he should have explained that the first Castlevania GB game, Adventure, was rediculously hard, and was why he skipped to the sequel.
I like Link's Awakening better than LttP too. A lot better in fact. It, along with Majora, are my favorite Zelda games, my favorite RPGs, and my favorite games full stop. Nowadays you really do want to play the DX version though.
Yeah they're adventure hack n slash games with puzzle elements.
very good choices.
Super Gameboy 2 plays gbc games just remove your snes' plastic tabs to put it in

Nice video ☺️ The games can also be played wonderfully on the RG351 devices. I made a couple of videos about it. Greetings 👋
Oh yeah, all gb Megaman games are on switch online now😊
you make a new list of more gameboy games :)
