Such a fabulous off road vehicle. I suspect most, if not all will be cruising Rodeo Drive, and never hit the dirt. My lottery vehicle. So glad to see this review!
the look of the G wagon is so iconic. It's one of my dream cars for sure. If on'y they were so dang expensive!
This is the German equivalent of the Hummer H1. It *could* be used as an offroader, but nobody does since the manufacturer refuses to make a model in a cheaper utilitarian trim level.
If they ever do make a cheaper utilitarian trim, I wonder if terrorist groups in the mid-east would start using them along side their Toyotas.
Come to Australia, we have G "professional ", with rugged trim inside, army version.

Thats not true at all lol. Check out the before generations where people bought the diesel model and took them off-road. And they still build new military vehicles. And CHEAP, you won’t get with a hand built vehicle but you can get the used for reasonable prices.
And just like in the US - you can buy pretty cheap old military G-classes (G463 with a 3 liter Diesel.)
Please start using this "3 wranglers comparison on everything out really puts it into perspective!!! "Kia Rio or 1.5 wranglers!?"
Everyone saying the owners will never take it off road nor do they know if off road exist. Come to my country, we use g classes for real off roads. If I ever own one, it d live its life mostly off road.
P.S. where I live, we have less paved roads, thats why most people here owns g-classes, LCs.

Those are mostly older, stripped down, Euro Spec GWagens (remember, MB's been making them for 40+ yrs). They're not the Uber Luxed Up models made for North America, I presume!?
I think they should have had an option with a solid or independent suspension. Personally I feel that independent does better on road and solid axle does better off road

Would like to compare to Jeep Rubicon. 95% of G Wagon owners never go off road and pay for the name, image, and extra luxury. Hopefully jeep which has a tiny fraction of the luxury but high price has comparable off-road capability.
lol @ the people saying the G Class is only driven on Rodeo Drive. Here in Germany, a lot of park/forest rangers, hunters, country doctors or vets etc drive G Wagons. Our equivalents to the SWAT (MEK/SEK) and the FBI (BKA) have amored version of them in use.
Fritjof D this video is for an American audience, and in America that’s what most G wagon owners do. Besides, the vast majority of G wagons are sold outside of Germany, particularly in the United States. Most Germans couldn’t dream of buying the G class or the AMG version due to its exorbitant price. No one cares about who drives it in Germany.
TBC1987 Yes, MB is still only a luxury brand, though the Metris and Sprinter vans are both trying to change that. So, it may take a while for us Americans to accept the G wagon as also a utilitarian brand.
TBC1987 Actually I just found out the USMC M-151A2 1/2 ton Jeep with the utilitarian one, but it’s called the Interim Fast Attack Vehicle. So, we have them in the US but in secret.
I love this car because it’s actually a proper off-roader but at the same time I would never drive it just because of the connotations it has on the driver thanks to celebrities.
Imagine the sort of Landcruiser you could build for 174k lol... The only G wagen id "consider" if I hit the lotto is the 4x4 Squared which was over 250k?
Closed course or not, impressive capabilities. Good review .... why sandy course? Dubai is why.
Prefer the out going model, crazy expensive, crazy purposeful & crazy rugged. New model may not be a cream puff however it’s softer for the road with tamed off road chops.
I got my 2019 G550 a couple weeks ago and did some light off roading in AZ. Where is this? I'll go this weekend!

Love my Falken Wildpeaks. They are the new duratrac in terms of the hot new not-Ko2. all 3 of my wheeling buddies ended up independently chose the wildpeak in 33's for their tire and we all love them. Good tires.
three Wranglers will rust away before one G wagon breaks a sweat
One JL, one diesel ZR2, one Raptor for the price of equipped G wagon.
Had the same dilemma when shopping for EV - one nicely equipped Tesla S model (& keep my old Gen 1 Tacoma off-roader) or a new ZR2 and BoltEV for same price. I went with GM, don’t regret it at all !!!
If I had a $130k I would buy one g wagon. Why would I need 3 of the same car

Well, if one Wrangler broke down and was in the shop, you'd have 2 others to use, so you'd never be completely stranded as you'd be if you owned only ONE Wrangler. It's always good to have "spare" Jeeps...
As for the Mercedes G, I don't know how its reliability-rating compares to Jeep's so I wouldn't know if it's better, worse...or the same.
For me though, only ONE Wrangler (Rubicon) would be in my budget...certainly not 3 of them, OR the Mercedes G in ANY trim level...so I'd take my chances (reliability-wise) with the Wrangler.
I DO want more towing capacity though than Wranglers have, however, so perhaps the new Jeep Wrangler Gladiator would be a better choice (despite being longer and with those associated trade-offs when off-road).

Those tires might be MORE aggressive, but I'm amazed they didn't put KO2s or something. Might as well, since they were already swapping them.
Cool as this is, I I'd opt for the older solid axel. Of course for now, my budget keeps me in my 86 samurai, and I adore it.
Suzuki for the win. This new g is nice but damn all the electronics, beeps, and screens as gauges

I’m glad they resigned it as this will no doubt be the last iteration. With electric trucks such as Rivian coming out, with 4 independent motors to each wheel, it will be able to control traction with far more precision and immediacy vs these old mechanical systems with differentials everywhere. Electric also means you don’t have to worry about snapping differentials when you engage them at the wrong moment or on hard surfaces. The old G wagon had extensive warnings about when and when not to hit the locking buttons.
This new one is nice, which means it’s swan song will be graceful.
Good to see the new G-wagen offroad in Anza-Borrego Desert State Park - great place. The only drawback with the G-wagen is underclearance - it needs more but there's no way to lift it or at least run larger tires.
I like my old one. Of course $127k in buying another one makes me a bit biased

Everybody in the comment section complaining about this G-wagen, could never afford one. "The G wagen will only be used to cruise down rodeo drive and go shopping." If we left it up to all of you RUclips commenters, we wouldn't have a G wagen at all. You guys complain about it not being used the way YOU would use it (and I hardly believe that) but you have no say because you work at Taco Bell lmao.

You may be able to buy 3 jeeps for the price of one G-Wagon, but the money you pour into a Jeep to keep it maintained makes up for the cheaper purchase price :-)
at 8:42 can someone explain why the rear wheels seem to spin faster than the front wheels with all 3 difflocks engaged? are they not 100% locked?

I get the intention but nobody off roads these..... partially because it's hard to enjoy off-roading when any damage is costing over 4k minimum and partially because people with that kind of money dont know that roads end so they never find it. I'll take like 3ish Loaded wranglers for over one of these easy

I offroad mine (´91 300GE bought for 13.000 euro 7 years ago) or use it as a van. Got an E-class and VW for normal driving.

was @ the jeep dealer otherday saw a few base jl 2 door soft top sports for around 27k & change by that mark u can get 5 for 135k most likely still cheaper than the optioned out g wagon …..

That course was extremely lame. They say this thing could finish the Rubicon trail?? Let's see that, AND the damage report (and bill) afterwards. That they don't show this thing on a real challenging course speaks volumes.
Anyone could EASILY buy a brand new Jeep Rubicon (JL) then upgrade it extensively AND buy another new car and have plenty of money leftover for the cost of one of these G-Wagens. Everyone should just admit these are moderately capable toys for the rich. Nothing special to see here.

the bad news it has an IFS, the good news is that the old one will depreciate in value. which means it would be the best time to get one and with nearly 40 years of production there will be no shortage of parts. the G class was meant to be a military truck. the new one is a civilian truck now so it won't handle a beating like the one before it. its now a full-fledged poser mobile.
Keep dreaming about that depreciation. Most of the current vehicles are pre-sold. The rest of this year and next year will be filling orders. The previous iteration will continue to be desired and the market will hold for quite sometime, especially considering there's been an appreciably decent hike in the base price and over all loaded pricing.

I found 4 today for literally 40% of their market value in Dubai 2013 to 2016 models with less than 70,000kms. so please keep dreaming in your own little world haha as for the rest of your points may be in some markets not where I am at. what I said is already happening. people who buy these new ones want the latest to show off. they don't care about the older models.

@@caleb2242 for the desert in the immense heat its the best choice especially when you own a SUV with a big engine with large displacement like from V6 to V12 4.0L -6.0L its the best choice to reduce the heat.

@@caleb2242 I live in the desert for almost 40 years I’ve driven many cars from different makers what’ve I discovered is the most important in the car is its “heat” how to reduce it as quick as possible to prevent overheating and damaging the engine on key element is the color of your vehicle the brighter the better even for the cabin for maintaining its cooler atmosphere from outside.
