    Mercedes G-Wagen full review: aex.ae/2Dw5XSi
The G-Wagen has always been one of motoring’s intriguing anomalies. It was designed back in the late seventies as a light-use military vehicle; used and abused mostly in the deserts of the Middle East.
It gradually gained a cult following as a road car, though, and over time it became a popular left-field alternative to the Land Rover Defender and Jeep Wrangler. But it was always a bit of a shed mechanically, much like the models it sought to compete with.

Got to say this is the first technically reasonable g class since the original g wagon if taken away the stupendous price. And the only reasonable thing to do is to get a diesel version just like in that video, The gearbox will have an easier time delivering low down torque and ultimately a straight 6 is just a hint better for offroading than that brilliant twin turbo v8 that comes within amg range but the crucial thing you definitely should do is to equip that wagon with smallest wheels possible as presented in that clip so there will be more sidewall on the tire for improved comfort and offroading. You can have your amg g class with big rims and still do incredible offroading but you will sacrifice the smoothness of the ride and ultimately there is a bigger risk of breaking the tyre or getting stuck in truly sticky circumstances.

I think its because originaly the vehicle was built as a proper 4x4 and by this I mean: professional versions available and built for utter durability and "mountain goat" capabilities. Independent suspension and a 9 speed box kind of pretty much kills it. The problem is that there fewer and fewer genuine 4x4. The Nissan Patrol and Toyota 200 series went the same way: geared towards everyday town/ motorway use (but maintaining very high off road capabilities). What all these lack is durability and the ability to withstand long trip (4000 miles sort of thing) out in the Australian bush, in the desert etc. In these circumstances simplicity pays off as they can be repaired on site as you're litterally many 100's of miles away from civilisation. Luckily Toyota still builds the 70 series 'also known as Bush Taxy. Go into any war zone and that's what you'll see being used in various form and generation. For instance (and much like a Mitsubishy Pajero/ Shogun which has a rough engine for civil use) the engines can pretty much run on any quality diesel (and some in South America and Africa is like tar)/ chip fat/ vodka whatever. Sorry for the long reply but I hope thats useful for readers to differenciate an SUV to a true 4x4 for profesional use.

It wasn't "originally designed and built by Magna-Steyr", it was always a cooperation between Daimler and Steyr assembled by Steyr, back then still Steyr-Daimler-Puch. And it wasn't "mostly used in the Middle East", it's used worldwide to this day.

Splendid, though still begs the question whether it is twice a car of the Land Cruiser Prado hence it costs roughly twice as much too. Right, it's a Merc and more luxurious but still would it worth twice as much as another highly regarded utility vehicle that just happened to be built like a tank? Would this give you careless motoring for lets say a couple of decades? For some reason LC holds best their value!

Super bonkers price, much like Land Rover, quietly forgetting that they used to be utility vehicles. The world still needs utility vehicles, (although the G’s pricepoint hasn’t been that for quite some time) however I suspect Land Rover will upmarket the Defender replacement making it equally useless for their traditional Defender customer base adding a further reason for their falling sales and losses.

Dealer maintenance is very expensive (350$ oil changes). Automatic transmission is starting to fail at 100k miles. Unable to comment yet on the G-Class.

I've had a 2003 and 2008 G wagon. In those days the suspension was very stiff so it drove like a Jeep with a plush interior. They were every day drivers for me and I enjoyed them off road and camping, BUT, I only made one road trip. That was miserable, to be honest. (Round trip was approx 1200 miles.) At the time I was well prepared for the high fuel budget but didnt anticipate how uncomfortable the drive would be.
This new model appeals as they've changed the suspension but I wouldn't recommend the older versions unless you have short commutes and close access to offroad destinations.

The Gelandenwagen was originally built for proper off road and extreme situations and it delivered. You should not compare or even discuss a Land Rover whether its a Defender or Range Rover with the Gelandenwagen.
I am disappointed in the removal of the SA. (Solid axles) Mercedes in my view playing into the sissy territory, category. I hope the G wagon is still offered with solid axles as in the 350 D professional.
