You know, I’ve been to Az, NM, C0, Nv, and Utah off roading many times over the years and have never seen a G Wagon on any trail.... Just saying.....
They were in WA. with the 550 in the early summer. Was in some rough trails. They are extremely capable and adorable. But your point is correct. Even the loaded people are not likely going to be out pin striping and panel banging their way through trails with them.

Out here in Germany you can see them offroading. But that are usually 80's and early 90's models or the W461 Professional.
Its like those nike or adidas shoes they are all advertised for sporty lifestyle and physical exercise. 90%of the users have never stepped in the gym or went for excercise in years.
Yeah thats right, truth is the real G Wagen is forbidden fruit for 99 percent of the world and the G63 is only designed to be driven on pavement. The W460 and W461 are the ones made for Nato and the Army, basically the the same G without the bling and with a proper ground clearance. It has almost no luxury and tons of torque in low gears via a diesel V6 /no AGM here/ plus plug hole in the floor for drainage, no carpets or electric windows and defiantly no infotainment. Known as the "G-class 300 CDI Professional W461" they are only currently available in Australia and South Africa and still no one buys them as they are stupidly overpriced. Plus they look a million times better than the G63 and the rest of the bling versions that look dated next week. 40 years down the line a W461 will still look the business. Out of six G's, five of which were the G63's types experienced shock absorber damage and breaking down during a demonstration drive along Western Australia’s notorious 2000km Canning Stock Route. Only one made it past half way and that was a W461 pro.
If Money was no option, I'd hunt down the 4x4 squared.
Personally I wouldn't mind the G63 AMG 6x6.

For off-road, the G550 for the exact reasons Tommy gave. For cruising Rodeo Drive, the G63 AMG.

G550 much better value and more sensible for Colarado, the G63 is a poser's cruiser regaurded as a Chelsea Tractor here in the UK the only offroading it gets is parking on the pavement when there is knowhere else to park, and ouch on fuel, pass anything but a gas station, too juicey a lumbering beast.
I'd be happy with either.. However...personally..since I'd need to buy some other aftermarket gear....to truly make it into a overlander.. I'd probably end up picking the 550.. although that 63 is gorgeous.

I like that you address the fundamental undertones of this paradox. Why do we go off-road at all, when we can travel 'easier' on paved roads? It's a rhetorical question. The more we surround ourselves with material technology, the more detached and desensitized we become from our fundamental human nature, and so we crave a return to the 'rugged life' that puts us back in touch with.... oh never mind. It's about status.
Definitely the G63 AMG. No such thing as a practical G-wagen, so you might as well go big or go home.

This whole video is null and void.. obviously you are going to take the AMG version of this.. because if you REALLY wanted an off road car you wouldn't get a 125k+ car in the first place.. you get something cheaper.. you know.. something that, if god forbid, it flipped over wouldn't cost you an arm and a leg.

Sorry Roman, but generally the people concerned with "the best" don't really care about it's capabilities. They generally care more about shoving their "AMG" logo in the "less rich" people's faces, and their best-of-the-best off-roading vehicle will probably never touch a dirt road, let alone sand dunes, deep snow back country, or rock crawling.
Why don't you guys just admit it these cars will never even see a gravel road.
If you are rich enough to get 1 AMG63, why stop at getting just the off road tire? Just get 2, 1 for on road and 1 for off road.

I'm sorry but this time Roman is the Winner. If I had $130K to spend on a G Wagon 550 to go on and off roading I would probbably have $180K to go with a 63 AMG G Wagon and some additional options for off the road. But ... No additional tires and wheels, no additional bulbars, no nothing. Just my fathers old '89 2,9l naturally aspirated short wheel base Diesel G Wagon that has already been off roading, hunting, fishing, etc.
Most of the vehicles you test that are labeled as off-road would barely be able to handle the pot hole infested roads of North East Pennsylvania. They're imposter off road vehicles. The G63 included.
Did that, done that off roading (shown in the video) with 22" on G63 amg. Still, going to get 20" wheels for it and maybe a lift kit (it'll be more fun) :D
I can get a white, Haines, Beefy T for $6, or I can get a Rodeo Drive, (insert high-fashion name) white shirt for $75. To me, it’s the “great guy,” or “D-Bag” buying it that makes the difference. Buy what you want and can afford. Just don’t be a “D-Bag” and we’re all good.
If I may use Jeep as an analogy. The AMG is the trackhawk while the G550 is a trailhawk. So which one of these do you take off-road? Does the Formula1 champions AMG even know how to off-road? Anyway, if I have 125k and want to go off-road, I'd be knocking on LandCruiser's door....

I'm with Tommy on this one. I dont think 99% of the population would even know the difference between the AMG version and the G550. I also think that dental on the AMG is fugly! Sorry Roman, it's cool but not the one I would pick...I guess the only way to change my mind is to drive one.

If you want to go off road in a Gwagon just get the G350, or the G500. The G550 is for someone who doesn't have the money to get the G63 but wants a very nice interior. Best choice for off road get the G500.
I don't get the thing about the launch and electric vehicles, it's obviously a LOT slower than most electric performance cars 🤔
Buy the 550 and the 50 large you’d save, shove it into the gas tank and shares in a body shop. Don’t forget the last time Roman took a merc off-roading against a toyo and a Jeep, you can practically hear him butt clinching in the video.
i choose the diesel for off road even the smaller 350d is more than sufficient for it plus a trailer behind
Get the 550 and then change out tires, rims, and turn it into an overlander. Not really a rock crawler unless you like massive repair bills and waiting for parts. :)

What a BS review. One of them is clearly missing the point. Nobody buys a G to to drive offroad. You buy one cause you want to do so and can buy one.

I’m with Tommy. Roman is always shying away from hurting expensive vehicles on the trails, maybe a little bit too much sometimes. Now he says the 63 is better at it than the 550? I bet he would be the first one to back off the trail in the AMG.

In Germany we have the old version of it (with two solid axles and narrower body) as the 350 d Professional.

I put 18’s on my G63. It can be done. That’s the smallest wheel that will fit on the truck though.
I honestly dont like the bumper on the 63 but when I win the lottery I might buy it.

Tommy is correct. Actually, you are both wrong. Even the people whom are loaded are not going to bash their rigs about in the trail systems that the every day driver will. If you go to open terrain where people can play with their 4WD systems and not risk damaging them, you might see a few. But don't get out the tally pad, because odds are, you are only going to need 10 fingers or less. ;)

You're both wrong! As you've often said Roman the G series would make a great off roader but its so expensive most people wouldn't have the balls to take it on a grid road nevermind offroad. I'd rather save money and buy 2 of the new Land Rover Defenders than these. One for off roading and the other as a parts car! 😂🤣

The 550 doesn't have adaptive suspension ...its an add on. But if you add it up its still less. but its like having a supermodel wife or a retired supermodel wife. your choice
