TFL is weak sauce for off road. They say everything the drive is great for off road after going through a few mud puddles on a service road. I won't even watch this video because I already know the content.
Very cool video and a truly amazing vehicle! I’m guessing there are people in Jackson or Aspen (or someplace similar) who would own one and actually use it to its full capabilities. Honestly, even if you have a budget of $350K for vehicles, you’re much more likely to own a few and your off-roader would be just a slice of that budget. The person who buys one and actually uses it off-road probably has a vehicle budget in the millions. That’s a remarkably small slice of the world. Very cool to get the opportunity to see this thing in the wild, knowing I will never, ever, get to own one. I suspect MB would only trust a very few journalists as they have you, Roman. Well-deserved and I’m glad you so obviously enjoyed this chance and let us all join in vicariously.
Amazing vehicle! Thanks Roman for showing us a little of what it can do. Having one of these might actually pay for itself with the amount interest and video content possible to create.
Awesome video - well done Roman. Kudos to you and MB for taking such a crazy expensive rig off road! Impressive capabilities on the G Wagon. We see a lot of G Wagons around Aspen and I would say that none of them ever leave the pavement!

If you use the full bag of tricks (lockers, etc) and then get stuck, you don’t have any tricks left to get unstuck. Not to mention using lockers around turns is a good way to break things if you have a lot of grip. I’ll use low range all the time off-road, but save the traction aids for when they’re needed. Anyway, very cool to see the mighty G actually used off-road and not being challenged at all!
I have an off-roading mate just like you. Every time we go we have to recover him, because he won't use his locker till he's stuck, and then he just buries himself deeper. You won't break anything using a rear or centre locker. If you get stuck even when using all your aids, you do have a trick left - those travelling with you will recover you. If you get stuck not using your aids, you confirm to your mates that you're a d*ckhead, and eventually your mates will go without you.

In-hub gear reduction axles is what the original (split window) VW bus used to increase ground clearance and gain a torque advantage to keep the 36 HP motor usable as the rated weight capacity of those early vans was over 1500 lbs. Granted those original designs were Swing Axles rather than true independent suspension like on the Mercedes.

Good vid! There’s good books on off-road methods including the mechanical why. As an off-roader or overlander, you want to avoid breakage and getting stranded. Using lockers inappropriately can increase your risk of breakage so you need to take that into account. I doubt this would break the G, but it’s something to think about, especially since fins doesn’t need lockers in that vehicle. On Fins, a better method if you truly wanted to use the lockers is to lock for the obstacles and unlock in between. However Fins can be done with simply low range and without lockers for most vehicles.
I really wanted the TFL videography crew to film this thing testing off-road. I’m beyond disappointed. If it didn’t get filmed this time it’ll never get filmed on this channel. Most of the video is of Roman or looking through the windshield.
Roman took a $359K vehicle to Moab and recorded it solo. He also forded water up to the bottom of the doors in it on the TFLnow channel. Seems more than reasonable and was well done for a solo video.
Thanks for all the effort it took you to be able to entertained us and show us the capability of this Mercedes vehicle. This vehicles makes this trail look like it's a piece ok cake, I would also like to see a follow up video after Roman submerged it almoust reaching the air intake of the engine crossing a water pond, I hope no damages
The best off-roader that will never be used off-road by anyone. Such a shame that all of that technical ability will be absolutely wasted. I'd be much more impressed if someone bought this with 18" wheels and a diesel engine.
In what certainly *feels* like a decade of watching TFL videos, I dont think I've seen you this excited. Sell some stuff, move some money around, buy one of these and go love life.
Here I was thinking the squared was solid front axle version of the new G wagon based on the 463A platform, then Roman shows us under the front. The IFS system on the front renders any advantage of the portal axle useless for the front at least, even Merc knows this thing isn't going off road much.
I’ve watched and followed TFL off-road for years and this is got to be the most ludicrous statement they’ve ever made! I challenge TFL ANY DAY, ANYWHERE, ANY PLACE with my Rubi Gladiator to see if this Geeeeee wagon is indeed the best!! Bring it!
Great solo video. Glad you decided to go sooner rather than let's just in case it rains or snows. Impressive vehicle for sure. Glad we could see your review and see how it did off road. Primo!!!!!
They need a company in the states to develop a portal axle kit for 4Runners and Tacomas (they have them in Ukraine). That would sell well and be one of the best off road mods you could possibly do.
My favorite off roader by far a MB G-Wagon! I had to settle for my second and third place cars. These are my 2021 Land Cruiser 200 and my 2008 FJ Cruiser. Great video! Keep them coming.
Roman being the boss. Filming, talking and driving a difficult trail all at same time and without a spotter. For those that are unaware, I'm not mocking Roman. Many high level auto journalists have mentioned how much more difficult it is to drive hard and talk at the same time. Usually they talk less and less the closer they get to the limit. That said I was a bit worried Roman would forget to put the G-wagon into park each time he got out to retrieve a camera.
A BadAss Ride, Roman! One of my buddies has owned two late model G's, but I could never get him to take either of them off road to any extent at my place in northern Michigan. We always drove off road in my modified/lifted Jeep GC WK2 EcoDiesel 4x4 w/ lockers (which performed flawlessly!).
Great vehicle and has always been. The one concern is the test that was done in Australia where they took 8 G Wagons to test and make an ad. Apparently all 8 broke down and could not finish the route. The ad was never made,
A G Wagon, esp the new 4x4 squared is my dream vehicle as well. I almost purchased one decades ago before Mercedes Benz USA brought them into the USA. At that time, a company called Europa from New Mexico imported them into the USA and Federalized them. Times have changed and a more practical vehicle is now in my garage.
Why is it that some many people cannot understand that this is an exotic vehicle. Its a specialty car for a selected few. Its not meant to be mass produced for the masses.
Since we are on Reverse Day. Did you know that the AMG G Class is the cheapest offroader you can buy, and the best value for money, and also cheapest in repairs!!!
Wheel wise it looks like you could go down to a 18-19" depending on the size of the calipers. You would also need to lose the side exhausts and tuck them up and out of the rear end. Put on 37" Mickey Thompson Baja Boss ATs on it and get better rock rails. The rear bump also reduces clearance. Just move it up to where the faux bumper is currently. But yeah $360K means most will wipe it with a cloth diaper and use to get potting soil at the Depot.

To Unstoppable: So sorry to hear your thoughts and experience about the truck. Great video though. I cannot comment on the car as I have never seen one, let alone driven one, and I can’t afford it as well so I am not going to say anything negative. I do have my eye on the “plain” Jane version though. I have yet to hear from current owners of the current model G wagon of any such negative comments. The service manager and guys working on them that I have spoken with about my possible order, have nothing to gain by hiding any negatives. What I am hearing, they are very solid: Now if you have $350K you don’t need, then buy this one.
What a fun, well presented video. I love how you showcased the off road capabilites in the superb location. In my imagination, I'd definitely consider the 4x4² over the regular G-Wagon 😅
I'm glad you addressed the bizarre myth that you want to only use lockers when you get stuck. I have no idea where this idea even came from, but it's always been stupid, and a good way to literally dig a hole you can't get out of.
I usually don't waste my time with comments because you only respond to your paying patrons but, you have travel to multiple places to review vehicles. I hope one day you do the same to test and review an Ineos Grenadier
Amazing vehicle. I can only imagine what I could build from a basic wrangler or Bronco with 350k. Of course it wouldn't have the "look at me factor" which is the point of the G wagon.
Saw the old G Squared in person once. It was used on the Lexus and Land Rover lot here in town. Don't remember exactly but it had less than 20,000 miles on it and they were asking more than $225,000. It looked like a grown man could sit upright underneath it the thing had so much clearance. Mercedes knows their audience though which is why this thing has the 22" wheels a chrome side exhaust tips. At more than 300K it is easily the most capable off roader that not a person who can afford it even used (unless they're a crazy Saudi prince) will ever even do as much as Roman did.
Imagine spending nite in a tent there, than wake up in the early morning and take a piss in that beautiful open area. Not next to a tree or a wall - in an open air. That must feel soooo refreshing!
If you have ever driven one, you will likely want one. They are incredible and extremely reliable. Heck, they are a military vehicle and are used thought out the world. They are larger than they look. Not for everyone, but very capable.
I drove up to Big Bear last weekend to snowboard during a snowstorm and I saw 6 4matic G Wagons slammed against the guard rail / stuck. Im pretty sure its driver error and the inability to control a Bi Turbo V8 on ice/snow. Oh and all BMW X Drives were stuck! 4matic system is great on the snow but you need to know how to drive.
Now let's see if you can get a Lamborghini LM002 to Moab! I'll go with you for that trip. I think the Jeep 392 Extreme Recon would be close to the class of that G-Wagon. However those axles with drop gears in the hubs are the holy grail to achieving ground clearance, especially ground clearance under the center differential section. Most areas of Moab you don't need lockers, just when you get onto the serious trails where you need to be able to pull over uneven obstacles with all wheels at the limit. If you can keep all of the tires planted then lockers don't help.
MBRP does make high clearance catback exhaust system for the AMG G63, it completely solves the problem. But seriously who in their right mind buys such a pricey SUV for modifications.
It's open diff that sends 50% of torque to each wheel. Locked diff transfers up to 100% to whatever wheel can take it. Unloaded wheels can't take 50% of torque, they don't have anything to stop them from spinning.
This is a very impressive machine. I guess money can buy you just about any thing. This MB is something else with its ground clearance & ( price ). When i look at Lite Bright channel, see what they do with there 392 rubicon ROCK Crawling, which jeeps are used for as well as camping, i wonder how it wood compare to Jeeps & other makes in real rock crawling.I really wouldn't want anyone to do that, but kudos to Roman for doing this all by himself, & where it showed the amazing ground clearance was very impressive. But, there was no really challenging rock climbing
Great channel, I love it. It is funn and we can learn a lot, lot of doubts are answered. Why did you went alone? Normally is one of your most frequent messages, don't go off-roading alone.
🇺🇸 Secret is Lift and Big tires. Don't need a mall crawler G wagon to do moab. I've seen lifted XV crosstrek and Samurai lifted do much tougher courses than moab!
Great off roader, I’m sure my ford bronco wildtrak can do the same as this g and costs quarter of this. but this is luxury and looks insane. You can’t hate though because this is made for rich people 🤷🏼♂️
Great video. Great Mercedes. Even over 30 years old - a G is still great value… go and visit the Mercedes museum in Stuttgart 👍👍👍 Greetings from Baden Württemberg
The problem with these new modern vehicles is that they are modern. One single computer chip glitch and you are done. This is why the original Hummer is so popular. If you go Africa and Australia you will see 1960s and 1970s Land Rovers still driving - you won't see this driving around harsh environments in ten years.
The worst example of modernized SUV is the new Land Rover Defender. You can't even repair its damned suspension if anything goes wrong and everything starting from something as simple as winch kit is proprietary.
Its front brake rotor is 14.8 inch and rear brake rotor is 13 inch in diameter. So, keeping a safe difference of 3 inches between brake rotor and rim size, one can easily fit 18 inch rims on it. Once you fit 18 inch rims you can easily put meaty 35x12.50R18LT 12-ply tires on it without any modification to the stock suspension. Then swap the stock exhaust system with high clearance cat-back exhaust system from MBRP. It's a shame that Mercedes-Benz doesn't outfit this excellent off-roader with those parts straight from the factory.
I wonder how comfortable the ride is off-road compared to the beating, banging, bouncing, jerking, and jolting that's the usual in other 4x4 suv's and trucks?
Fun fact..the old model had straight portal axles front and rear , they came from the steyr puch Noriker wich only 6 or 7 were build but steyr puch stil had the molds for these axles. To me the older version is way better then this new version.
An awesome truck for sure. You can install portals to pretty much anything if you feel so inclined, and have access to that sort of money. I'd love to see a new Defender on portals 👌 I'm sure the Aussies (marks) or Ukrainians (werewolf) will do it soon 🤞 Great video, tar 👍
No idea why you would lock the rear when you started driving. Completely unnecessary and actually putting needless strain on the drivetrain. To make make matters worse, you did it going downhill.
I love this vehicle, but I really wish MB would fully embrace its off road capabilities and trim it out with PLASTIC fender flares, a tucked-in exhaust like their "bargain" G Wagons, etc. For the asking price, and aside from the 18" rims and tire package that they include with the car, the fortunate owner should be allowed to check off the 'serious off roader' box and leave the poser add-ons for the LA crowd. And kudos to Roman for putting it through that trail because that's where it truly is home. I say, "why not,"? Though it's expensive, I'd like to see some of the bottom line some folks dish out to bring their Jeeps, Land Cruisers, etc. up to the level of kit, namely the portal axles, that MB includes with the 4x4'2.
Yea its pretty awesome and if i has absurd money id buy one in a heartbeat does seem like a good at everything it does but i dunno if its worth twice the price of a Normal G.

Absolutely amazing! The 6x6 is my dream vehicle though 🙂
WhistlinDiesel has proven how tough the regular AMG 63 is, crazy how much they can take
watched his vid before this one...These things are tanks
Roman is a class act respecting the vehicle and relationship with Mercedes
What a fun, well presented video. I love how you showcased the off road capabilites in the superb location.
In my imagination, I'd definitely consider the 4x4² over the regular G-Wagon 😅
This is my dream truck!
Roman, you’re a class act, and I that you own one of these “Heroes” someday.
Thank you thank you thank you thank you for actually taking it off road! I highly doubt I'll see more off road footage of a 4x4² from anywhere else.
Sorry didn’t finish this video don’t take me wrong love your videos but been by yourself I couldn’t really appreciate how capable this Mercedes is.
Imagine spending nite in a tent there, than wake up in the early morning and take a piss in that beautiful open area. Not next to a tree or a wall - in an open air. That must feel soooo refreshing!
365k..... thats insane. Looks great though.
I am in love!!! My absolute dream car! Color and everything ❤❤❤
Great video, if I had the $ I would definitely have one. It’s cool to see how excited you are that Mercedes let you use this vehicle
This is my dream SUV Right here ❤. God I’d love to have one in my lifetime!
Great video Roman! I love those G wagons! If they made one affordable,Jeep would have some competition. But for now I’ll stick with my cheapish Jeep.
@DevilDog53 not really but ok.😵💫
Off road wise I wonder about those exhaust pipes vs rock.
They would last five minutes on a tough trail. You need rock sliders, not side pipes. Same thing for the wheels, they're just too big.
MBRP does make high clearance catback exhaust system for the AMG G63, it completely solves the problem.
But seriously who in their right mind buys such a pricey SUV for modifications.
Amazing! It made it all so easy, even without a spotter.
This is my dream SUV. I’d have this and a GT3 touring in my ideal garage.
my second dream vehicle my first is the Raptor R . 😎👍💪🇺🇸💪🇺🇸
Great video... I'm curious why there isn't a Sorento Zion edition review yet! 🤔
I’ve always wanted a G63. I love them.
But, there was no really challenging rock climbing
i dont think anyone will be adding 40s any time soon.
Right after you hear the price, it becomes an entertainment video rather than a prospective buying option.
Roman may as well be driving with a cocktail… he would spill a drop… off-roading in luxury 🤣
You're a good person, hope you get your own 63 squared
Thanks for video
Would it be better the G500 because of range when travelling to deserted areas?
Great off roader, I’m sure my ford bronco wildtrak can do the same as this g and costs quarter of this. but this is luxury and looks insane. You can’t hate though because this is made for rich people 🤷🏼♂️
So what do you got to say about the Scorpion ATRs now?
Great video. Great Mercedes. Even over 30 years old - a G is still great value… go and visit the Mercedes museum in Stuttgart 👍👍👍
Greetings from Baden Württemberg
The problem with these new modern vehicles is that they are modern. One single computer chip glitch and you are done. This is why the original Hummer is so popular. If you go Africa and Australia you will see 1960s and 1970s Land Rovers still driving - you won't see this driving around harsh environments in ten years.
The worst example of modernized SUV is the new Land Rover Defender. You can't even repair its damned suspension if anything goes wrong and everything starting from something as simple as winch kit is proprietary.
You need to start bringing a camera guy on these Moab trips.
The blue paint looks just like the sky… nice
Bro! You hiking and off-roading at the same time. 😂
Great video. These trucks are amazing
Whistling diesel beat the living crap out of one of these and they are insanely well built. Tough and beautiful.
Other than changing tires it’s probably the best equipped off-road vehicle on the planet in stock configuration
Awesome video but one critique. When you are panning a camera go about 1/3 the speed you are going. Thanks
Fun fact..the old model had straight portal axles front and rear , they came from the steyr puch Noriker wich only 6 or 7 were build but steyr puch stil had the molds for these axles. To me the older version is way better then this new version.
Look at that, Merc they allow the owner to open the bonnet.
An awesome truck for sure.
You can install portals to pretty much anything if you feel so inclined, and have access to that sort of money.
I'd love to see a new Defender on portals 👌
I'm sure the Aussies (marks) or Ukrainians (werewolf) will do it soon 🤞
Great video, tar 👍
Good job Roman!
No idea why you would lock the rear when you started driving. Completely unnecessary and actually putting needless strain on the drivetrain. To make make matters worse, you did it going downhill.
I believe you ,it is the best off roader a available, For those who can afford it.
Great job Roman!!
Yea its pretty awesome and if i has absurd money id buy one in a heartbeat does seem like a good at everything it does but i dunno if its worth twice the price of a Normal G.
Excellent video Roman!!!!!!
Cool vid! Great work!
It makes everything look easy
