Witherspoon came on strong in the late rounds to dethrone Tony Tubbs on a 15-round majority decision at the Omni for the World Boxing Assn. title. There were no knockdowns in the bout, which the judges scored 144-143, 144-141 and 143-143, but Witherspoon staggered Tubbs several times in the late rounds

Great fight - I remember Tyson KOing Tubbs as a kid and thinking, at the time, that he was just a stiff to beat...but Tubbs was a talented big man and had super fast hands for his size.

Tubbs was a deceptively quick for a man his size. In the Tyson fight, just before he was ko,ed, he whipped in a cobra-like left uppercut to the body that Tyson didn’t even see to react in dodging the punch.

Tubbs was a skilled fighter and he was still effective over 20 years into his career. Amazing guy for sure! Tim Witherspoon was a good fighter as well, he didnt maintain the longevity of Tubbs, but in his day could put on a show against the best the world had to offer.
