    Easily one of the greatest musical moments in TV history. Who the hell could sing such a brilliant melody/duet today, or even then? Few. Damone and Garland were spectacular, to put it mildly.

    Look at how Judy's full attention is on Vic. She was so attentive to her guests. Judy was a gregarious and generous superstar. So rare today.

    Recently saw the movie “Judy”, which is current playing in theaters throughout the country. Appreciated everything about it. Tonight, I just happened watch a couple of videos with Judy performing. Not to take away from anyone else, but to me, Judy performs in a class that few if any enter to the extent she does. She is unique in that regard. I think she must be living in the spirit of the songs she sings, and seems completely at home there, happy, at peace and full of energy to live life to the fullest while performing. Nothing is held back as she gives it her best with just the right amount of, whatever it is she has that entertains, excites, and honors the audiences. As a young adult during the late 50's early 60's, I did not have the maturity to appreciate that when I saw her on television. Now I understand why people loved her, and now I do too.

      Thats so cool you remember seeing her on television! I'm 26 and very few people my age even know who she was unless I say she was Dorothy, her music touches anyone who lets it in.

    Judy probably the best singer at singing duets. She knows how to blend.

    • @craigslivka1
      @craigslivka1 3 года назад +7

      she did more than blend, she always somehow not only make her co-singer sound better (listen to her her and Gene duet and he does not have that thin tiny sound), but as an amazing actress she bounces off her singing partners to help both of them soar, and never does Judy gets lost in doing this.

    Proof if it were needed, that Judy really could sing just about anything you put in front of her. Outside her comfort zone. Still magnificent. What did he whisper in her ear at the end I wonder?

    In watching this again, it's easy to see and hear why Streisand said that Judy has a Great, Great Voice! If only this had been recorded by Capitol in stereo, both artists were signed with Capitol Records at that time and an album of their duets was supposed to be released, but sadly, it never happened.

    I think the original Kismet medley (if memory serves me correctly on Steven Sanders brilliant book on Judy's year in tv (he interviewed everyone from Hunt Stromburg who consulted the monkey on his shoulder for tv decision making (I kid you not), to George Schlatter, Bob Mackee, etc.) Judy found boring and thought mel torment (her nickname for him) did a half ass job. Judy loved and respected talent, but if you were not willing to give your best, she looked elsewhere to get what she wanted. Judy dating Bobby Cole at the time, asked him to rewrite the medly, and when Judy was having difficulty with the new medly, she called Melvin in, and torme said he could not help her this was not the medly he wrote, and walked away. Judy called Bobby in and he worked with her. This medly that Bobby Cole wrote was a very challenging one for Judy, there are things she does on here, that are very difficult and yet when we see her handling these moments with ease, you can also see her smiling with a I'm making something amazing and difficult sound magnificent type of smile.

      I agree it is wonderful to see Judy excelling at something which is musically slightly outside her comfort zone. Proof is it were needed that she really could sing just about anything you put in front of her. The chemistry between them is palpable and you feel they are each pulling each other through it. The way she looks at him. And I wonder what he whispered in her ear at the end. "You're simply amazing, babe"?

    This was not "cool to me" when this aired. I mean the Beatles were. All these years later I recognize that these two were made to do duets with one another. Their combination of duality & oneness are equal.

    I didn't hear the first song Judy sang in the movie (which starred Vic Damone).

      I haven't seen the movie in ages, but I believe "He's In Love" was left out of it. It's on the original Broadway cast album, though. In the show, it's a song for a minor character, who is singing about the Caliph (Vic Damone's part in the movie), backed up by the show's chorus. I think it really works best as a huge choral number, but Judy and Vic were brave to attempt it as a duet. I love this song, but I suppose it was left out of the movie because it's sung by a minor character who doesn't have much else to do.

    I think I watched every episode of the Judy Garland show when it initially aired in 1963-64. I was 14 at the time and I remember the era, and its limitations, well. But looking back, I'm surprised that somebody at CBS apparently wouldn't let Vic sing, "Let peacocks and monkeys in purple adorning / Show her the way to my bridal chamber . . .," which is the actual lyric of Night of My Nights. Yes, I know, network censors and blah blah blah, but after all, it's a BRIDAL chamber, not some back alley, which implies that the couple are married.

    One of the more exciting medleys Judy did with a guest star on her variety series. The DVD collection of the series also shows two aborted attempts of this medley, with Judy messing up right near the end one time, and she laughs so much as she gets on the floor, LAYS ON HER SIDE, seemingly frustrated. Very funny to see.

      That outtake and the liner notes about Vic Damone going into hiding to rehearse his part provide great background on this most excellent duet - brilliantly arranged by Bobby Cole and executed beautifully by Judy and Vic. This and her solo on "Stormy Weather" are my two favorites from the CBS series. Eight minutes of great music.
