Diahann Carroll: Born July 17, 1935 - Died October 4, 2019 at the age of 84 (Cancer). She was an American actress, singer and model. She rose to stardom in performances in some of the earliest major studio films to feature black casts, including Carmen Jones in 1954 and Porgy and Bess in 1959. In 1962, Carroll won a Tony Award for best actress, a first for a black woman, for her role in the Broadway musical No Strings. Her 1968 debut in Julia, the first series on American television to star a black woman in a nonstereotypical role, was a milestone both in her career and the medium. In the 1980s she played the role of a mixed-race diva in the primetime soap opera Dynasty. Carroll was the recipient of numerous stage and screen nominations and awards, including the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress In A Television Series in 1968. She received an Academy Award for Best Actress nomination for the 1974 film Claudine.
@@sandra-jones TRUE: These are the awards she did win: 1962: Tony Award for Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Musical - No Strings 1969: Golden Globe Award for Best TV Star - Female - Julia 1975: NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Actress in a Motion Picture - Claudine 2011: Inducted into the Television Academy Hall of Fame
Cindy Brodie I feel like Judy was always VERY supportive of other female artists, especially. She always seems to have a great sisterly connection with women she performs with!
Look how enamored they are of each other. Judy was not only a fabulous talent, but a giving and gifted artist. And...Diahann Carroll still looks incredible!
Judy could sing with anybody. The chosen keys were always the "other person's". This is a gem ....beautiful, talented women who show each other great respect and singing together. A time long gone...
Yeah, and they said the same thing about Dionne Warwick, Nancy Wilson, and the 5th Dimension...ALL of which opened doors so that others following them wouldn't have such a hard way to go. Love them all!
Miss Carroll was a fixture on American TV during the late 1960s and 1970s. I remember my family of 6 would sit around the TV console and be thrilled by her singing talent and exquisite beauty. She was featured on many TV variety shows during this period. Rest peacefully you precious gem of a Lady, we will always remember the joy that your brought us all! Bravo and Bravo and Bravo!
I just directed a PBS concert special to air in August, which stars Diahann Carroll live in Palm Springs in her one-woman show, backed by the Pat Rizzo Orchestra. She is just a s beautiful as ever and an absolute delight to work with. Chip Miller/Director
@waynegabi At the end of her Archive of American Television Interview, she's asked about many people she's worked with. Judy's mentioned and Diahann called her "the most overwhleming performer that she can remember" she says a bit more and just ends by saying that Judy was "extraordinary".
when it comes to Ms Garland she was the best singer in the free world and to see her with Ms Carroll the world was a little bit better ! I am glad that I grew up during this period great music!🎶🎶🎶🎵🎵🎵
A lot of people don't know that Diane Carroll was once a Model for Ebony. Her singing is strongly underrated. Her voice is really divine. She was one of Broadway's most colorful actresses. I have never seen her make a fashion mistake and she has always been the definition of 'dignity' for any woman. There's a book on her and Sidney Portier. He spurned this beautiful woman. I love her and have watched her all my life. I'm so glad she's still around. :D
I freaking love their duet!! I grew up with this type of music and acting in my grandma's house (she is 83) she always paid homage to greats and made sure I did too!! ❤
I love the fact that Judy was among some of the first white hosts to have black performers on their shows in the 60's when other white hosts would not. Carroll, Lena Horne and others were able to appear on highly respected shows including Frank Sinatra and Ed Sullivan. But I LOVE Judy Garland best! And as a Black woman I respect, admire and revere her memory!!!!! WHAT A WOMAN !!!!!!!
Two beautiful gifted woman. Each brought their individual gifts to the most beautiful songs without regard to ethnicity- just artistry. Joyful. Thank you Judy and Diahann. They made beautiful music together- example for the world, today. To the person that posted this: THANK YOU.

What a fabulous episode of Diahann Carroll, singing with Judy Garland! Diahann, was an amazing Trail Blazer & Trendsetter! Beautiful women with the singing voice of an Angel! Her acting ability, was iconic and memorable! She passed on 10/4/19! May she Rest On Heaven! 🙏😔🙏
that was because she frequently worked with scripts, and memorizing is something you have to do with your dialogue. What is impressive is that she was always mesmerizing after she had finished memorizing...a claim few others can make.
Extraordinarily beautiful Carroll. NO STRINGS is probably an underrated musical because it was composed by Richard Rodgers who had a few bigger hits. With a resume like his NO STRINGS might appear minor. Great medley by the way: usually they sing the more famous songs, but these were the less famous songs of these great composers.
I just love it, love it I remember when this show appeared on TV of course I saw it! two of my favorites performers RIP Ms. Diahann and Ms, Judy Garland always and forever in or hearts..
Patricia Ruth Lewis, you are fortunate. Not many people can claim what you just did. You saw these two American icons in the world that then was and you shared time and space with them. Now you view the video and see them sing again, but they no longer live in the same house as you. Yours is a unique perspective and you probably appreciate these ladies in a way that most of us can not understand.
@@timothyhughes1904 Thank You for that Timothy I guess all it takes is for someone else to tell you how fortunate you are to have remembered these folk when you were growing up and now, I'm all grown up and these folk are all making their transition. @filmmekker: Judy also had Count Basie on her show. And as Brendan Konicki said, The Judy Garland Show only lasted for 26 weeks. In addition, she had several other minority guests and/or groups on her show, such as Latino, etc. And this was in 1963!
This was a great treat! Imagine a TV show today where you watch 2 great performers just sitting together singing duets of popular songs. Ratings bomb for sure!
Two wonderful great singers. As long as I can remember both of them touched my life by song and acting. So great of a performance here. Judy at her top voice and Miss Diahann's smooth voice. I wish a duet had come out on record. Lovely lovely.
What does this mean? What exactly is her "just due"? She won the Golden Globe in 1968 for best actress in a television series. She also won a Tony Award in 1962, but that's Broadway, not "Hollywood".
