2 abstract painting frames

  • I painted these acrylic paintings sometime in 2015 or 2016. I don't remember exactly when. I actually painted a bunch in this style around that time since I really enjoy this type of painting. You can see quite a few of them that still need frames in my cargo container as I take these out.
    I wanted to make frames that really brought out the best of these paintings. The idea was to make the frames basically be an extension of the paintings. Since the paintings are abstract, naturally the frames also had to be abstract.
    Once I finished the frames and put the first coat of water-based polyurethane on them, I put the paintings in the frames to see how they looked. I really liked the way the frames looked without the paintings in them but the paintings and the frames didn't really look as good together as I hoped they would. The charred wood color just didn't bring out the best of the paintings and therefore the frames didn't look like a natural extension of the paintings. Since the paintings were done with a lot of metallic paint, I decided that the frames needed some of the paint color on them. I mixed up a very thin mixture of mostly water and metallic bronze colored paint. Approx 95 percent water and 5 percent paint and painted the frames. The finishing process was actually very time consuming. I did a lot of sanding/distressing and repainting to get the look I was after. Once I was done I put two or three coats of water-based polyurethane on them. I'm happy with the way them came out and I've had them hanging in my office since June and enjoy looking at them everyday :)

    Scott you have great patience! When I looked at the paintings in the beginning I had no idea of how you got the frame to look the way it did. All those small cuts! Very time intensive. Good work.

      Thanks Mom! I really enjoyed making the frames so all the time I spent was well worth it :)

    The paintings and the frames add to one another! It's double art!! Incredible. The frames are one of a kind, never before seen. It's uncommon to see the art work itself in the frame and not just the picture. Love the way you took the time to make them compliment one another.

      Thanks Dad. Even though the paintings and the frames are separate from one another the idea was to make the frames a natural extension of the paintings so that they could work together to be one piece of art - rather than the paintings being considered as "the art" and the frames being something to go around the art :)

    The frames make the painting "pop," but it looks like really tedious work to make them. You must have an incredible amount of patience, Scott! I love the way this art project came out. Great idea with the bronze colored paint thinned with water to make your own stain. I think that was a good choice that worked well as the end result has proven. Thanks Scott!

      Thanks Paul! Yes, it's a lot of work to make frames like this but well worth it. I don't know how much patience I have.....probably just the average amount. Sometimes I can be very impatient as I'd like to do things a lot faster!!! .....but, I wanted the frames to turn out good so I had to put a lot of time into them. I guess when you enjoy the process, the time doesn't really matter too much :)

      Thanks Joann! The burning and wire brushing really helps bring out the grain of the wood.

    what a brilliant video to wake up to with my morning cuppa tea ! that was great , i love the frames ..not just the burn effect but the cuts you made and the way the deeper parts of the cut retain the darkness of the charred wood. and the bronze metallic tint was a nice twist ..really accentuated the wood nicely. i can magine this scaled up with a frame made from old gnarled scaffolding boards or reclaimed oak floorboards .... would love to see you do something like that . thanks for another great video and great artwork 🙂

      Thanks! Yes, I like the way the bronze metallic paint worked with the wood.....the idea was to keep the tint suttle but help the frames match the paintings better. I would love to get a hold of some old gnarled scaffolding boards or reclaimed oak floor boards. I'm always on the lookout for wood so maybe I'll run across some :)

    Oh my, those frames are spectacular. You don't make things easy for yourself, you have an idea and go with it, and it usually turns out fine. I'm not a big fan of abstract, but the frames here make the pictures far more interesting. I would think these will get snapped up by a buyer pretty quickly. Best wishes, ilona

      Thanks ilona! It always seems like I start out with an easy idea.....and then things get more complicated!!! I guess once I start working and start enjoying the process I just go with it and have fun and see where the project takes me :) I don't know if these are going to get snapped up by a buyer though.....I've had them hanging in my office since I finished them in June and enjoy looking at them everyday.....so I don't know if I can part with them :)

    Perfect harmony! I'd be very interested on how you produce the paintings, perhaps you could do a video on that. Thanks Scott for once again sharing your skills with us. Ken

      Thanks Ken! I actually did a video about 2 1/2 years ago showing how I paint in this style. It's the second video I posted on my channel, so if you click on my Videos section and scroll to the bottom you'll see it. It's called "Four paintings in a row". It's not a great video, but it would give you the general idea. I should probably do a more updated one at some point, but not for awhile. I still have a lot more paintings like this to frame before I paint new ones :)

    Great video, the frames are very unique and complement the painting nicely. I also find your workshop setup very unique. The outdoor workshop would not work in upstate New York where I live. What part of the country are you located?

      @scottoconnor  4 года назад +1

      Thanks Roger! Yes, my workshop setup is very unique! I really enjoy working outside. One of the best things about it is when I'm stirring up dust, a lot of times the wind will blow the dust away. It's nice to breathe clean air when working (although sometimes I still have to wear a dust mask :) It's also great being out in the sun all day. I live in Ventura, Ca. so we have great weather here year around :)

    Hey Scott, Single digit temps here. Like the elaborate process of the frames. I'm wondering if they took longr than the paintings??? Appears you had fun making this one. LOL! Did you switch Poly? Lookin good!

    • @scottoconnor
      @scottoconnor  4 года назад +1

      Thanks Tom. Yes, the frames took a lot longer than the paintings. The paintings may have taken about 30-45 mins each while the frames took several days (most days were partial days and not full days - but lots of hours overall). For most of my wood art projects I use oil-based poly but on some of my projects and a lot of my picture frames I use water-based poly, which is what I used on these frames here.
