I was kinda down today, feeling isolated due to the virus. We recently returned to Las Vegas after spending 260 days cruising from Portland, OR to the Sea of Cortez. Wow, very small world...to hear that John Kretschmer had been in Michigan and more specifically showing family the ropes on Lake St. Clair. I live 25 minutes from Lake St. Clair, have fished it many times, our son is a multi-year volunteer Watchstander with the Coast Guard several years at St Clair station, now on Belle Isle station in the Detroit River. No volunteer access to Coast Guard now due to Covid. My daughter's Director at work lives on & sails Lake St Clair currently. Adam & Khiara you are an incredible couple and have elevated the art of cruising and showing us all the joys & trials!!
I'm not a sailor, but I enjoyed this interview a lot. What a wise and humble person. A philosopher as well as a psychologist. So much to learn from people like him.
What a legend! I'm a former student of Tadji's, found your channel through her recommendation. Used to hear stories of my teacher's husband being a sailor, never really thought much of it in middle school. Now I can't stop watching others sailing adventures on RUclips and wish I had asked her more about it when I was younger. Love your channel!
One of the reasons I love this episode is that pilot berth you are sitting in front of was my home for ten days. I think when I found John in St. Thomas and he assigned me a berth, he looked at me and said, "You look pretty agile, how about you take this pilot berth." His safety briefing is a great model to follow, especially in terms of assigning tasks in the case of the need to abandon ship. I was assigned the task of following John around and doing what he needed to have done. I've never been sure of how I should interpret that. John really is a fabulous captain and his trips are worth every penny. I also wanted to say how impressed I am at your interview skills, Adam. That was as professional an interview as I think I've ever seen. Great, great job.
That was the most engaging conversation I have heard in the sailing shows I watch the man (John) is has a very calming influence about him and very knowledgeable no wonder he gets the best out of people. I wish I could be just half as calming as he Thanks guys cannot wait foe part 2
I loved this. As a Yacht Master Offshore guy, I prefer wet socks to bits of paper. The major red flag to me, is meeting someone who thinks they have more to teach than learn. They had to teach me to sail again when I did my level 3 RYA dinghy course. I learnt so much. Thank you for interviewing this guy. He says exactly what I feel, although he's doing it from an experienced perspective.
I put this on while working on laundry, and immediately got sucked into the stories and advice. This was one of the better interviews that I have listen to. My wife gave me Sailing a Serious Ocean when we bought our first family sailboat in 2013. It was on the advice of a co-worker who neither sailed nor had aspirations of sailing but loved the book. I then devoured all the rest of the Kretschmer corpus, except Cape Horn which we just got on audio book. The few video fragments of John I found online didn't match the person and voice in the books. But your interview did!!! Thank John again for doing this and thank you for being your thoughtful self and letting that shine through in the interview questions. I hope social isolation has you on the hook in a beautiful bay with nothing to do but edit this content up for us and dream about your next interview. And thanks for the honesty of all your content -- now I'll have to consider patronage I guess...

Hello from an 89 yr old in Winnipeg. A most fascinating interview and I look forward to Part 2. A childrens author got me started during WW II in the 1940s. I went on from there in Vancouver. I enjoy your channel too.. I miss the sea and your experiences are a great remembrance aud. Keep 'em coming!
Great interview and great questions :-) He "John" brought back memories... In 2007 I was crushed by a 2500 lb. steel I-beam. I suffered a broken back, 5 broken ribs and a lot of internal damage and bleeding (muscles, etc.) While it was happening, I had visions of being Cut in Half... "Relax" was the word of the day... I had to direct traffic as everyone around me was freaking out and running in circles... I realized that the only way I would survive was to tell people what to do and how to do it. My supervisor came by and was clearly distraught. I looked at him and said, "I think I'll take the rest of the day off." His laughter settled everyone down... Lesson: When everyone is freaking out, make them laugh... To think straight, in any difficult situation, the mind needs to be Relaxed... Period. I'm sure John would agree... :-)

I have to agree with most the comment riders on here. You two were absolutely amazing. I faded off a couple times, but the fault was my attention span trying to get the best of me. When I found this slight irritation happening, I quickly realized that this is no ordinary interview, and was drawn into your chat like it was the best talk I have heard in years. John skill is tuned better than most. What a lucky man you are to have him as a close friend to you.

I will sail with this skipper every day and twice on Sunday. He touched on something that Jared my memory. I once read something, I don't remember who wrote this. But he said " 5 years from now , you will be at exactly the same place, doing exactly the same thing , except for the books you read and the people you meet". When you read a book , you become smarter or I should say more knowledgeable . And when you meet great people you become a better person. I am so grateful for watching this video. It has moved me . John is a hero of ours. He actually had kind words to say about the seaworthiness of our production boat, against a sea of pundits who said our keel would fall off and that we would surely die before leaving the harbor. We have thousands of miles under the keel, now, but John’s vote of confidence rounded us up and into the wind. Great interview, Adam.
Great conversation. Kretschmer has long been one of my sailing idols. I have paid admission fees to boat shows just to hear him speak. I am very jealous that you get to sit down with him and absorb his knowledge. He and the Shards might be some of the most inspirational sailors that you could ever want to know. What a treat - what an amazing guy. There are two types of people in the world! 1.The person who introduces me to them - and their ego and opinions - the person caught up in their own self importance and 2. The person who introduces me to the world with all its joy - concepts - adventure and possibilities . John is the latter and he taught me about the great risk.... love it....
Wow, I did not think that it would be so illuminating. If I could ever afford to be in his crew I would jump to it in a heartbeat. Most surprising thing to me, as I can't do it, was the coolness under pressure with crew. That is a dark art! Cant wait for episode 2. 5 stars. André in Sydney

Great work Adam, nice questions and interview. As a ginger beer I'm naturally attracted to the techy bits, but as a hubby, dad, captain John gave Gold on leadership and the human side of sailing.
Never left a comment before anywhere, but that was really really good. Stumbled on you guys About episode 8. What I like about the channel is the mixture of you both obviously enjoying what you do, but the great insights that you occasionally drop. When I have spent 2days trying to remove a rusted bolt in a deep bilge with no room and slightly bodgy tools, and I watch you guys, there is a level of empathy that develops. PS I went and bought a gear puller from total tools after watching Adam with the prop. All the best from oz, take care.
Haha love that we’re not the only ones cursing in our deep bilge after dropping yet another tool down there! As much as we hate doing the grotty boat jobs, when boat owners get together it’s mostly what we seem to talk about... everyone seems to know what you’re going through!
I lived on and sailed my own sailboat for months prior to taking two ASA beginner courses. It helped with two things being a complete novice prior to buying my boat: I learned to dock quite well, without a motor and I learned how the boat worked, and the simple mechanics of sailing which just articulated what is done in a simple to understand manner. It also helped me understand how a boat rights itself, etc. After that, I never looked back. The classes were helpful and a good jumping off point. I was always glad to have taken them. So, I guess they just clarified simple, but at the time, muddled concepts and procedures.
My husband and I usually skip interviews and almost skipped this one. Glad that we didn't!!!!! Waiting for the next one! VERY interesting man!!!! And you did very good interviewing him!!!!!!!

I’ve recently invested time in not only watching your videos but, listening equally. This episode, by far, is your best. I’m 73 now and feel as I’ve “missed the boat”. I loved John’s comment about crushing someone’s dream; I’ve Had to grieve over two dreams in my life and now .... I think you probably understand. Can't believe how short this discussion was. Yes , this is it. It is about life, lived in full. Marvellous. My favourite read is still Joshua Slocum, in French, which I did read sooo many times, I still have it! Even after 45 years living in Australia. Loved the interview. Seemed more like 5 minutes than nearly 50. I’ve never read any books about contemporary sailing adventures. My love for sailing started with pirate movies, then authors such as C. S. Forester, Alexander Kent & Patrick O’Brien. Thank you for broadening my horizons.
A few weeks ago I called you lollygaggers (to legends). Tonight my respect increased, not only due to your fascinating, and incite full guest. What was most impressive was your ability to listen and be open to learn. The hardest, by far, question is ‘does your desire to sail around the world, exceed the love for your wife?’
Good question. I’ll ask him in the morning when he wakes up. But it might be a moot question anyway, since I’m all for sailing around the world with him.
Great video! I met John at South Shore Yacht Club in Milwaukee a couple years ago and really enjoyed his talk and his book. One thing that always get me is whenever he talks boats i need to add something to my mental list of trips and tricks. Like, after watching this video, im going to run a piece of hose from my bilge to near my cooling water intake for the engine, in the situation that i have a failed bilge pump i can easily swap the lines to easily drain the water with the diesel cooling pump. Thanks John!

This is by far my favorite of all your videos. Your vid's are decent, by the way. I just majorly geek out listening to sages. You are one lucky guy to know this man. Honestly, I could learn from him all day. Love his non-authoritarian style. Love his insights and that he is well read. Love that he took off to live on his boat, which I am about to do--after the pandemic ends. Taking my 22 from Nebraska to somewhere south to start out. From there, I'll figure out the rest. My months aboard a tall ship in Vanuatu changed a lot and solidified the rest of my lifelong dreams. I so get it.
I really enjoyed the interview. You did well for your first shot and the interviewee was fantastic. I look fwd to the second half of the video. I didn't find it too long at all. I'm retiring in 6-8 years and I'll be 43-45 years old (current Coast Guard sailor) with plans of leaving the enlisted life behind and Captaining my own ship. I'm trying to accumulate as much knowledge as possible so I love these kind of interviews. He shows great leadership qualities as well as a long list of sea stories. Keep these coming.
The editing on this video is really something to be proud of. The time you invested in it was well rewarded. Adam's interview technique is excellent, and of course his subject is a good listen.
JK is the real deal. I’ve read all of his books and did a passage with him several years ago. It’s tough to get a spot on one his passages as they sell out so quickly, but it was an awesome experience for me. I would suggest anybody that has any interest in near-shore or offshore sailing, or who just wants an adventure, book onto one of his passages.
Well done. You may have a career interviewing people. Your questions were well thought out. John is a true educator. He is able to wrap his answers around a story that draws in the viewer enforcing the value of his experience. More content like this desperately needed.
Adam - great interview and appreciate the fact there is more to come. As my knees turn 66 next month curious if you asked him about any issues as you do get older - he said he is 61 now and still going so I assume that means if you are in shape and stay that way - you’ll be OK making the necessary longer passages - even if single handed. My cruising plans are on hold for awhile now due to the Coronal issue so getting antsy is all
As a friend of John's, a fan of all his books, and as someone that has sailed on a passage with him aboard Quetzal- I have to say, you did a fantastic interview with him. John has laid out a lot of his life story in his books, and has spoken in many podcasts and seminars-- but your line of questioning dug into some new information from him that I hadn't heard before. Excellent interview, thanks for putting that together. Believe me, if you think your time speaking with him went by quickly- you should see how quickly a couple weeks at sea with him goes by, you will NEVER run out of things to talk about!

John is a hero of ours. He actually had kind words to say about the seaworthiness of our production boat, against a sea of pundits who said our keel would fall off and that we would surely die before leaving the harbor. We have thousands of miles under the keel, now, but John’s vote of confidence rounded us up and into the wind. Great interview, Adam.
Great conversation. Kretschmer has long been one of my sailing idols. I have paid admission fees to boat shows just to hear him speak. I am very jealous that you get to sit down with him and absorb his knowledge. He and the Shards might be some of the most inspirational sailors that you could ever want to know. There are two types of people in the world! 1.The person who introduces me to them - and their ego and opinions - the person caught up in their own self importance and 2. The person who introduces me to the world with all its joy - concepts - adventure and possibilities . John is the latter and he taught me about the great risk.... love it....

Great work Adam, nice questions and interview. As a ginger beer I'm naturally attracted to the techy bits, but as a hubby, dad, captain John gave Gold on leadership and the human side of sailing.

Stumbled on you guys About episode 8. What I like about the channel is the mixture of you both obviously enjoying what you do, but the great insights that you occasionally drop. When I have spent 2days trying to remove a rusted bolt in a deep bilge with no room and slightly bodgy tools, and I watch you guys, there is a level of empathy that develops. PS I went and bought a gear puller from total tools after watching Adam with the prop. All the best from oz, take care.
Haha love that we’re not the only ones cursing in our deep bilge after dropping yet another tool down there! As much as we hate doing the grotty boat jobs, when boat owners get together it’s mostly what we seem to talk about... everyone seems to know what you’re going through!
I lived on and sailed my own sailboat for months prior to taking two ASA beginner courses. It helped with two things being a complete novice prior to buying my boat: I learned to dock quite well, without a motor and I learned how the boat worked, and the simple mechanics of sailing which just articulated what is done in a simple to understand manner. It also helped me understand how a boat rights itself, etc. After that, I never looked back. The classes were helpful and a good jumping off point. I was always glad to have taken them. So, I guess they just clarified simple, but at the time, muddled concepts and procedures.

Loved the interview. Seemed more like 5 minutes than nearly 50. I’ve never read any books about contemporary sailing adventures. My love for sailing started with pirate movies, then authors such as C. S. Forester, Alexander Kent & Patrick O’Brien. Thank you for broadening my horizons.

A few weeks ago I called you lollygaggers (to legends). Tonight my respect increased, not only due to your fascinating, and incite full guest. What was most impressive was your ability to listen and be open to learn. The hardest, by far, question is ‘does your desire to sail around the world, exceed the love for your wife?’
Good question. I’ll ask him in the morning when he wakes up. But it might be a moot question anyway, since I’m all for sailing around the world with him.
Great video! I met John at South Shore Yacht Club in Milwaukee a couple years ago and really enjoyed his talk and his book. One thing that always get me is whenever he talks boats i need to add something to my mental list of trips and tricks. Like, after watching this video, im going to run a piece of hose from my bilge to near my cooling water intake for the engine, in the situation that i have a failed bilge pump i can easily swap the lines to easily drain the water with the diesel cooling pump. Thanks John!

I had a job "interview" like that eighteen years ago - an informal chat that flew by, I'm still working for the same outfit. Anyhoo, that's a real talent you have, really looking forward to part two!
This is by far my favorite of all your videos. Your vid's are decent, by the way. I just majorly geek out listening to sages. You are one lucky guy to know this man. Honestly, I could learn from him all day. Love his non-authoritarian style. Love his insights and that he is well read. Love that he took off to live on his boat, which I am about to do--after the pandemic ends. Taking my 22 from Nebraska to somewhere south to start out. From there, I'll figure out the rest. My months aboard a tall ship in Vanuatu changed a lot and solidified the rest of my lifelong dreams. I so get it.

I really enjoyed the interview. You did well for your first shot and the interviewee was fantastic. I look fwd to the second half of the video. I didn't find it too long at all. I'm retiring in 6-8 years and I'll be 43-45 years old (current Coast Guard sailor) with plans of leaving the enlisted life behind and Captaining my own ship. I'm trying to accumulate as much knowledge as possible so I love these kind of interviews. He shows great leadership qualities as well as a long list of sea stories. Keep these coming.
The editing on this video is really something to be proud of. The time you invested in it was well rewarded. Adam's interview technique is excellent, and of course his subject is a good listen.
JK is the real deal. I’ve read all of his books and did a passage with him several years ago. It’s tough to get a spot on one his passages as they sell out so quickly, but it was an awesome experience for me. I would suggest anybody that has any interest in near-shore or offshore sailing, or who just wants an adventure, book onto one of his passages.

Adam - great interview and appreciate the fact there is more to come. As my knees turn 66 next month curious if you asked him about any issues as you do get older - he said he is 61 now and still going so I assume that means if you are in shape and stay that way - you’ll be OK making the necessary longer passages - even if single handed. My cruising plans are on hold for awhile now due to the Coronal issue so getting antsy is all
As a friend of John's, a fan of all his books, and as someone that has sailed on a passage with him aboard Quetzal- I have to say, you did a fantastic interview with him. John has laid out a lot of his life story in his books, and has spoken in many podcasts and seminars-- but your line of questioning dug into some new information from him that I hadn't heard before. Excellent interview, thanks for putting that together. Believe me, if you think your time speaking with him went by quickly- you should see how quickly a couple weeks at sea with him goes by, you will NEVER run out of things to talk about!
