    When I was younger I worked as a mechanic at a gas station here in the US called Chevron. We had a guy bring in a 1989 nissan pickup with a four cylinder engine. It has the loudest ticking sound I have ever heard. Turns out his cousin was helping him change the spark plugs on it and for what ever reason only known to himself he dropped a phillips quarter drive screwdriver bit into the cylinder and didn't say anything. We found it during a borescope inspection. It had embedded itself in the crown of the piston and made hundreds of plus shaped marks in the head face in the process with a lot on the piston as well. I had seen many weird things there but that one took first prize.
    That was a great experiment. You guys are one of my favorite channels on YT. With all of the torture you have put those poor cars through I firmly believe that the last car running on earth will be a Lada.

      Run it on coal dust like Rudolph Diesel also tried in 1899 and watch how it polishes the cylinders. The engine was coked up after 5 minutes

    A friend was cleaning the carb on his _El Camino_ and somehow dropped a check valve ball into the intake manifold. He didn't notice, started the car, it made a ticking sound, and the top of the piston looked as if it made friends with a shotgun.

      I'm thinking tiny pure lead shot could possibly be pulverised before it caused too much serious engine damage. Lead is actually a reasonable friction reducing material, so powdered lead might even be slightly beneficial on an older engine by finding it's way into valve guides and impregnating piston skirts......... Or it could just gunk everything up. :D

      Yeah, I thought the same. Those balls are really “bouncy” (hard) so it wouldn’t surprise me if it left through the intake valve.

    My first car ever was a Lada 1200L. Once upon a time i was once again tinkering with it's carburetor and accidentally dropped an M5 nut into the carb throat - one of those nuts that clamp it on the intake manifold. It made a pinging sound for a while but given a proper slam on the gas pedal, it apparently found it's way out the exhaust valve and into the exhaust pipe.

      I had a used Lada nevia years ago it was in great shape but it kept over heating, one of those bolts holding the the intake was missing must have worked its way in there.
      You gotta love Russian Engineering.

      @@melchiorrebaldassarre1782 well to a certain extent. The Lada was given more ground clearance and beefed up suspension components like bearings and was given different specification parts most definitely for predicted climate. I don't think a fiat would handle it as easily as a Lada with less clearance. Smaller parts, and best of all, if the fiat starter broke, the Lada had a hole for a hand crank backup which I really like the idea of. Lots of little tweaks and touched which made the Lada significantly heavier and beefier and more reliable in harsher climates.

    At the end of the Exhaust phase the intake valve has already started to open, this is called the overlap phase of the camshaft. Ideally at higher RPM the velocity of the exhaust stream after all pressure is relieved will actually pull a vacuum on the combustion chamber allowing fresh air and fuel to evacuate the burnt fumes in the cavity. It is during this overlap phase at lower RPM that the kinetic energy imparted to the ball was able to overcome the low velocity of the intake charge and find it's way into the intake manifold allowing it to arrive in an alternate cylinder.

      I agree. Generally, valve timing overlap provides “blow through” to clear the cylinder of spent exhaust quicker and (or) establish early flow velocity quickly when the intake valve opens. I don’t know if that’s the specs on a Lada engine but it could explained the ball migration from one cylinder to the other.

      @@rustyaxelrod All engines have overlap with the exception of extremely low RPM engines which you might see on a small oil rig and even those start to open the intake valve before the exhaust is completely closed.

      Yup, I had a Chevy 400 small block blow up and most of the other cylinders had piston bits from the one dead cylinder.

      Ball from cylinder 2 got stuck in the intake valve, held it open and was blown back into the intake upon the compression stroke and pulled into 4 during it's intake draw.

    so ball bearings can be a cost effective way to clean your pistons, cylinder walls and head at the same time. user disclaimer: we cannot guarantee your motor will survive this cleaning method as you might damage spark plugs, break your piston or cylinder wall.

      You joke but there are commercial auto repair tools for blasting carbon out of intake ports and valves in the car using crushed walnut shells as the medium. These are just hard enough to remove the carbon effectively but not quite hard enough for any stray pieces to damage the metal of the engine. The walnut shells are a cheap endless waste product from the walnut industry.

      I've seen a few insignia cr diesel engines that dropped the tip off a glow plug and embedded itself in the piston and did no further damage. Also had an insignia engine that swallowed a swirl flap and again stuck itself into the middle of the piston, both ran fine although the insignia did have a slight tick @ idle. Minimal damage to the head too strangely. Only discovered both when the engines locked up due to the oil pickup seal failing

    You should see what sandblasting media does when inhaled by an engine. Maybe different types, like glass bead, silicon carbide and aluminum carbide.
    Or different maybe grades (coarse vs fine)

    Back when I first started working for Jeep in the mid 80’s, a coworker was working on a carburetor on a Grand Wagoneer, with a V8 360.
    He managed to loose a check ball down into the intake. (Remember My Cousin Vinney and the carburetor jet🤣). When he started it, engine rattled for about 3 seconds. He shut it off. After figuring out what had happened, then pulling both heads off, he discovered that the check ball had passed through 2 cylinders on one side of the engine and one cylinder on the other side of the engine. The ONLY way that could have happened is through the intake manifold. All the techs were really surprised to see what happened. Yes, heads and pistons were ate up. When you did this video, I knew what was going to happen. I’ve seen it before🤣🤣🤣🤣. Great video.

    Those metal balls are fricking indestructible. The Renault/Peugeot/Volvo/Delorean V6 came from the factory with a steel ball blocking the mixture adjustment, which was a fine setscrew on a mechanical lever in the intake stream. (K-jetronic fuel injection with air flow door.) To remove it you were supposed to use a special little "hole drill" to remove the swaging from around the top of the ball to remove it, then there was a rubber service plug to replace it after adjusting because leaving the hole open was a false air leak affecting mixture.
    A colleague told me of a mechanic he worked with at some shop when one of these came in. He very boldly and against the pleas of my colleague took a drift punch and big hammer and BROKE the ball loose DOWNWARD, sending big aluminum chunks and the steel ball into the intake plenum and leaving a jagged hole that wouldn't accept a service plug. The mechanic pleaded with him to fish out the broken parts but he just said, Oh it'll be fine just watch. Then he starts the engine and gives it a rev and RAKNAKNAKNAKNAK! Ruined the customer's engine just like that!

    I tried this in all eight cylinders on my Dodge. It totally fixed the loud tapping from my worn valves. I can't hear the tapping at all! I'm a little concerned about the loud banging that's drowning out the tapping... but, at least the tapping isn't noticeable any more.

    I had a 1974 JEEP CJ5 with a 360CI and the piston in cylinder 7 disintegrated and it sent parts of the piston throughout the cylinders through the intake manifold

    Balls swap cylinders when the valves are at overlap.. the balls went through the open valve intake valve into the intake manifold and went to another cylinder that's how it passes. I had engines break before the pieces go through the engine and when its at overlap when both valves are open..then that's how it gets through.🙂

    As a mechanic, I have seen this many times, where a valve or seat grenades in one cylinder, exits into the intake manifold and hammers every other cylinder. There is valve overlap at TDC between the exhaust and intake stroke, therefore the intake valve is open as the piston is moving up. This happens with any size particle, which is one of the reasons why air filters are important.

    Hey, there's some way to market this...I know!
    Head gasket repair in a bottle is basically little glass beads that get melted and extruded into the gasket to seal it. So if we use that same concept with the metal balls we get...piston in a can! Dump a bunch of tiny ball bearings into the cylinder. It will use the phenomenon where enough BBs will self-organize into the most optimum structure like certain atoms will, and viola! Instant piston in a can!
    Want to up your displacement? Want to turn that 2 liter 4 cylinder into a 2.4 liter 4 cylinder? Simply dump .1 liters of Piston in a can into each cylinder!
    'Want more displacement? No need for a replacement! Try Piston in a Can!'
    I know what you guys are thinking: "What a brilliant idea! I'm going to steal it for myself!" Well DON'T, okay? Patent pending! **Swats at.** PATENT-**SWATS!**-PENDING!

    This reminded me. Back in my appy days, I had a Citi Golf 1300. I swapped the engine out with a 1600 engine.
    At one stage I got a piece of aluminum inside cylinder 3.
    It made a funky noise.
    Removed the plug, turned the engine over to eject the aluminum debris, replaced plug.
    Engine ran just fine for a long, long while.

    I find myself saying that all too often. Recently, something fell into #2 spark plug hole after plug came loose but I was unaware, re- tightened and then started the engine only to here a metallic sound tapping around. Came across this video in my efforts to learn where the object may have went.

      Beer will work in a drunken emergency. First hand experience on a 1950’s international flatbed truck. Just use the brakes as little as possible. It will stop fine a few times.

    Make some high compression pistons using aluminum weld sticks weld on top of the piston as much as you can without hitting the valves to increase the compression

    I've been going through hell with an engine swap, and have a similar problem to this. Had some cylinder heads rebuilt, installed them, only to have a knocking noise, popping in the exhaust, and white smoke.
    Pulled the heads off last night, and found a bunch of indents in the piston and the head. Only problem is that it wasn't the valves being bent (which they were due to a bolt coming out on the timing belt tensioner), but something else. The dents were behind all of the valves. I can't figure out what it was, as I found nothing. But now the block is trash due to a large scratch left on the cylinder wall.
    This video was nice to know what happens if something gets into a cylinder.

    The ball got into cylinder 4 like this:
    First the ball in cylinder 1 was pounded into dust. Then the dust slipped past the piston rings and into the oil sump. Then that oil got past a bad ring on piston 4 and into the combustion chamber, where it then resolidified into a perfect metal ball again! 🤣

    This happened to a Ford Cortina Mk2 with a 1600 crossflow engine I owned. It somehow swallowed a 20mm long bolt into number 4 cylinder and bounced around for a while, then stopped. After removing the head I found that the bolt had got stuck between the valve and the head for a short time then had disappeared through the exhaust valve. The piston looked amazing with dozens of thread imprints on the crown. The exhaust valve had bent and wrecked the head. We ended up replacing the piston, head assembly, and a cam follower that snapped in two.
    I never found where that bolt came from but I put some broad mesh between the carby and inlet manifold, just in case...

    Can you actually run an engine on just pure nitrous oxide? I mean...Oxygen is explosive if it's pressurized, and nitrous is pretty much just Oxygen with extra O
    And if it does work, is there a limit of how many nitrous shots it can handle?

    I had the spark plug fail on me, that jumped 3 sylinders making marks. Was baffled myself.
    I have wanted to pitch some ideas to you for some time now, and here it goes!
    1. Cleaning the combustion chamber while engine running by spraying dusted water in the inlet on mid/high rpm.
    2. Change the driveshaft with multiple wires. My vision on that was to make the car crumble when the wire Twist's and get shorter, or do something else break. . ?

      Cleaning carbon with water has been in practice for decades. What do you think seafoam dose? Engine needs to be hot at operating temp to work.

    This is how you add speed holes and port and polish the combustion chambers and pistons. This is good for 50 hp, it's called the golf ball texturing process, it's very secretive in NASCAR and top fuel dragsters

    Lol! The fact that they did an experiment on what I commonly see is beautiful! When the Caterpillar engines I service blow a turbo, or drop a valve, they will cross contaminate the next 3 cylinders through the valves. I love watching these guys! Lol

    Pistons with dimples improve MPG and power of a Diesel engine. Look up the startup “Speed of Air”. They got promising results. Please test if adding craters with balls makes the engine more powerful.

    nice experiment : cilinder disabling on cruising speed. On a 4 cilinder engine, when at cruising speed, disable 2 cilinders (disconnecting 2 injectors) and watch the effect on consumption. Disable compression by installing electro valves on 2 of the 4 cilinders

    Had an old Corvair from 1965 (aircooled flat 6). As they got older and if the engine was overheated, they had a habit of dropping the steel intake valve SEAT out of the aluminum head. The seat often was broken by the valve itself or the piston and was ejected out of the cylinder through the intake. If you didnt stop the engine fast enough, it would spread the damage to the other two cylinders on that bank through the intake manifold.
    So you could end up with a ruined head, and three beat up pistons.

    I'm a retired forensic expert who specialized in analyzing vehicle crashes and mechanical failures.
    I have seen evidence of debris and foreign material migrating from one cylinder to another in the course of catastrophic engine failure many times.
    I believe that this occurs when the compression in a cylinder is compromised by a failure and debris is then aspirated via that cylinder's intake valve into the intake manifold and then via the intake valve of another intact cylinder by the suction of the intact cylinder.
    Careful analysis of this phenomenon revealed that debris was most likely to be ingested into the cylinder next in the firing order sequence following the cylinder experiencing the initial failure.

    My wife (FG a the time) had a dodge neon that was running funny, I checked the spark plugs and found substantial impact damage on one of them.
    A few months later the engine caught on fire. Never knew the full story behind whatever happened to it, but the first oil change was done at something like 5 times the recommended mileage so it wasn't really the car's fault that it broke.

    Just a thought for the small ball to transfer between cylinders my assumption is it happened while the valves were on the rock at TDC (valve overlap) it was forced out via the inlet valve in to the inlet manifold and then sucked in to the other cylinder via its inlet valve on the induction stroke.
    Does this seem feasible?

    I worked on a Ford 'split port' 2 liter engine that was fitted in the US Focus. This motor had a valve seat come loose as they have a reputation of doing. When I stripped the motor I found bits of broken valve seat in one of the other cylinders - evidently this quite often happens. Having a valve seat rattle around and chewed up in the motor does a lot of damage
