I grew up mormon in the 80’s and my older sister became pen pals with a missionary. Wrote him letters for about a year, had never seen him but he convinced her to move across the country for him so they could get married. Being a dumbass she absolutely did this. Dropped out of college and moved for this dude. They got married and then divorced a year later. Gotta day after seeing that the ring buying doesn’t seem that bad.
So hard to believe, but statistically people have been progressively getting lonelier and living solitary lives, and it’s human nature to love and be loved so I can see why some people can be so easily manipulated when desperate for companionship

When they asked for the ring back, Lauren told them that that was the most disrespectful thing she'd ever heard in her life and refused to return it. Idk if she ever did.

If you mean just through text, I TOTALLY agree. In a lot of these cases on catfish, I totally agree. However, as someone who fell in love with someone through the internet (combined texting/calling) and wasn't desperate or depressed at the time (lot of irl options, he was the only person that ever stuck out), it's not as easy to avoid as you might think. Love has no boundaries, even where it should. Love is blind. Love doesn't discriminate and it'll bite you and latch on.
