This is why I love Bastille. Their songs are so deep and emotional. This song reminds me of depression, the draw is the depression that's pulling you away from your life. He's trying to convince himself that his friends care about him and want to help, but the depression keeps pulling him away and the negative thoughts won't stop running through his mind, but he can't control it.
As someone with anxiety I relate to this song so much. "The Draw" can represent anxiety. I know it's keeping me back from doing what I want out of fear of failure or humiliation or keeping me from sleeping which cases me to be sleep deprived and hard to work with the next day. The lines about worrying about the words "they" might say. "They" could be anyone and I've spent many nights worrying over what would happen in a certain situation and what it would make people say about me. The lines about friends and being scared of being alone hit me the hardest. It speaks of something I've seen others deal with.I get scared my friends don't actually care and I'm just an annoyance to them and they pity me enough to keep me as a friend, so (Adding back to the "what 'they' might say", this could also be that 'they' is your friends and your fear what he 'they' would say if you told them how you actually feel about anything or what you think. Will they agree with you? Think your over dramatic? Think your stupid? Think you deserve to shunned for that? Leave you or thinking it? Think your smart? And you spend to much time worrying about it.) I monitor everything I say on my worse days in fear of them hating me and I'm so scared of being alone and being left behind. "When You Go Home Everything Looks Different" Hit me hard too, because when I'm with my friends I can at least escape into my friends joy and laugh with them, making the world more vibrant, but once I'm home and alone I see things as dimmer. Sometimes you need to be reminded that they actually care about you. Your friends truly care, but sometimes no matter how hard I try I can still fell 'the draw' pulling me back to my anxieties and fears. Dragging me to a dark hole of self doubt, anxiety, and fear of being alone. No matter how much they tell you they care, no matter how much they show it, you can sometimes still slip down that hole of thoughts. You can either eventually learn they love you with certain things (depending on the circumstances) or you can get stuck in that hole for a long time.
TheTrueLissaWho I hope you know that you aren't alone. no one will judge you for revealing what's behind that dark curtain. just remember the good things you've done and that there is help for you and all you have to do is reach out barely a finger. Remember that you are loved and God loves you. :)
1:42 always get goosebumps here, it's like when he said "dont listen to your friends" earlier it's paranoia talking, but when he says "they only care and hope youre alright" it's a quiet thought of reason
This is my fav song from Bastille. Usually, when a band comes in my town and I got tickets, I listen to all the songs on the setlist before the show. I knew only a few songs from Bastille when they came and I had little time to get all their songs in my head... but I got almost all, except this one. For some odd reason, I didn't find it interesting enough to ever listen to it all. At the festival that they came to, I ended up on the first row. During the show I filmed pretty much everything. At THE DRAW I decided to take just pics because just like I said, I wasn't into the song at all. And I remember that every single time I got Dan to sit near the edge. just in front of me, he started singing ''...pulling me back" (stepped back) ''...pulling me back'' (stepped back again) ''...pulling me back.'' (and back again). The funny thing is he noticed me with my frustration and after the song he came in front, at the edge and said ''quick take a pic!'' and giggled in the microphone... (and everyone was confused why he said that) That was the most adorable thing ever and ever since this is my fav song. :))
As a newly sober person, this is about the struggle of addiction. The beauty of a well written song is it can become what the listener needs. As dark as it is I find it to be a beacon of light reminding me I’m not alone.
Because as young people we relate heavy to “don’t listen to your friends see the despair behind their eyes, they only care once in a while” until we realize it’s the final line “they only care and hope you’re alright” because everyone experiences things differently but we can all hope and try to be and have those friends that only care and hope you’re alright
"In my left hand, there is the familiar. In my right hand, there's the great unknown" Am I the only one that thought of reading a book or turning the pages of a book?
"Just listen to your friends - trust that they're fair, look in their eyes Just listen to your friends - they only care, and hope you're alright." Now those... those are beautiful and thoughtful lyrics. And he says them so gently at the end too - like wow, those are honestly some of my favorite lyrics I've ever heard.
will always love bastille. this song always reminds me of my depression, anxiety, ocd and self harm. how it pulls you away from life and everyone you love. it's so fucking hard, but i'm finally beginning to recover. it's so hard not to tear up listening to this, but it means so much to me :)
the text says a lot. He describes very well how difficult it is to make the right decision. I can feel very good why Dan writes these lyrics and what he wants to share with other people. This song is amazingly good and I'm really thankful for the unique music they give us ❤
This song is undoubtedly beautiful despite the heartache it gives me. I know the feeling all to well, the feeling of being so empty you ache yet so full of pain and doubt you want to vomit. The human condition is a tragic one. People of a certain way suffer from their own brain's mechanics. It could be depression, anxiety, both, something else completely different or just your own cruel, unexplainable mentality. But whatever causes the feelings described within this very song feels lethal. Just know that no matter what you do, know you are not alone in this nasty world and help is always available.
That song is the definition of depression! I love how much this song says exactly how you feel when you suffered depression, it's like drowning and especially when you have just moved to a new place. This song reminds me of my experience... It's a beautiful song!
On the video: The lyrics and how they match up with the song is so wonderful. You have no idea how many lyric videos literally hurt my insides because of how badly they line up, but this was a wonderful way to experience the song. Thank you!!
His voice is so haunted. I always thought the draw was a bad thing. Like the patriarchy or a dictatorship or archaic traditions/societal norms. Holding you back from true freedom. I now see that the draw could be a good thing, in a different scenario. Like, the protection and goodwill of your friends preventing you from harming yourself when you're in confusion and despair. Or the Spirit of the Divine guiding you back to your first love. Warms my heart.
in the real version they say both, this version is different, but yes, if you listen to the original song they do say that line the first time, and then this one the second time
I listen to this song and I feel like I need to share it with the people I know, just so they might understand how I've felt for the past 2 or 3 years. But at the same time I don't want anybody to know, I keep putting up this mask that everything is alright and I don't need any help, but it's exhausting me. My soul is telling me with a dying voice to simply give it an end. The Draw is Pulling Me Back.
i had this assembly at my school and they did a bunch of skits with songs, and they were super deep skits. this song was playing during one about a man sitting on a couch at a party. at the party everyone was drinking or doing drugs except the middle guy on the couch. he had a thing holding him on the couch, and everytime he got up, the string pulled him back. the people around him were trying to get him to drink. once he finally got free, they pushed him back.
people, listen to some live versions, you'll hear that Dan sings "don't listen to your friends THEY ONLY CARE ONCE IN A WHILE" and then "just listen to your friends THEY ONLY CARE AND WANT TO KNOW WHY".
Probably the best lyric video. I'm a total Stormer and just snoop lyric vids to see how good they are. This is the best by far, really get the Bastille feeling :) Yes, the album is AMAZING.
This song had an extremely powerful performance live. Dan was banging his temple with his palm during the just listen to your friends they only care and hope you're alright part.
For me? This song is about success. A lot of people try to pull you back from success, because they are afraid of you either out-succeeding them, or succeeding in an area that maybe they don't know much about and don't care about. There's the Great Unknown -- where success lies -- and the Familiar, where your friends live. The Draw (to the Great Unknown and to Familiar) keeps pulling you back/forward. Maybe I'm reading far too much into it, but that's how I've always seen this song.
I feel like the draw for me is the deep seated belief from when I was little and really, fully believed no one could really love me, if they seemed to, it would be an elaborate prank or they were using me. They said no one could really love me and it's still so hard to get away.

As much as I love the song, the way it seamlessly moves on to WWYD is amazing. Just like how Previously on other people heartache moves into of the night
I relate so much to this song! !!!!!!! Im not a very social person , im not invited to all the parties nor go out many nights, i prefer staying at home and listen to music like im doing today !!!!! When im with some coleagues from school i feel invisible sometimes but when someone talks to me or anything i feel happy!!!!! But when i get home i think a lot that they dont care about me, that everyone has someone to be with or to talk to but i dont and that all of them spend a lot of time together and i dont!!!!! That keeps me from making friendships or trust people!!!!! But this song helps! !!!!!! (Sorry for coming here talk about my shitty life )

You could almost say... You can feel its draw?
As someone with anxiety I relate to this song so much.

1:42 always get goosebumps here, it's like when he said "dont listen to your friends" earlier it's paranoia talking, but when he says "they only care and hope youre alright" it's a quiet thought of reason
I always heard "Don't listen to your friends, they only care once in a while." Someone tell me I'm not the only one.
You're not the only one.

This song live... was the peak of my life so far. Their music really does come alive in live performances.
I'm going to their concert tonight and this is my fav song by them! I'm gonna cry I'm so excited
I just went to their concert in Tucson, and I felt it in my soul
This is my fav song from Bastille. Usually, when a band comes in my town and I got tickets, I listen to all the songs on the setlist before the show.

Was it Boston Calling?
Lol, that's hilarious!!!!!!😄
Oh my god I've seen a video of that gig. Hello random internet person I've seen Dan talking to!
Hey do you have the vid on here?!! I'd love to see that!!! I love BASTILLE!
FRONT ROW?!? Oh my gosh... You don't even know how envious I am right now! I swear I'd kill for those tickets...
As a newly sober person, this is about the struggle of addiction. The beauty of a well written song is it can become what the listener needs. As dark as it is I find it to be a beacon of light reminding me I’m not alone.
Am I the only one who cries during the lines "Just listen to your friends, they only care and hope youre alright."
Tessa Saporetti No. I relate to this whole song. Especially the parts about your friends.
Yes
Such beautiful songwriting especially juxtaposed w the opposite sentiment from the 1st verse
In my right hand, there's the great unknown"
Am I the only one that thought of reading a book or turning the pages of a book?
I love your mind
"Just listen to your friends - trust that they're fair, look in their eyes
Just listen to your friends - they only care, and hope you're alright."
Now those... those are beautiful and thoughtful lyrics. And he says them so gently at the end too - like wow, those are honestly some of my favorite lyrics I've ever heard.
the meaning of the lyrics just hit me and I feel like Dan Smith slapped me in the face
I would pay to get slapped in the face by Dan Smith lol
+James Kepler same 😂

will always love bastille. this song always reminds me of my depression, anxiety, ocd and self harm. how it pulls you away from life and everyone you love. it's so fucking hard, but i'm finally beginning to recover. it's so hard not to tear up listening to this, but it means so much to me :)
This, and Skulls, will always be my favorite.
+Meggie I like this and Remains :)
this song, laughter lines and skulls are my fav 3!
I like this, skulls, laughter lines, and bad blood
the text says a lot. He describes very well how difficult it is to make the right decision. I can feel very good why Dan writes these lyrics and what he wants to share with other people. This song is amazingly good and I'm really thankful for the unique music they give us ❤
This song has a message most people don't realize it though
Rocket Kustomz what is it?
I'm curious too.. what is the message?
it's a suicide song
Rocket Kustomz its pretty obvious
This song is undoubtedly beautiful despite the heartache it gives me. I know the feeling all to well, the feeling of being so empty you ache yet so full of pain and doubt you want to vomit.

ive always heard it as "want to know why"
but it makes more sense for it to be once in a while
bc the whole point of the song is to switch up like dat
BAD BLOOD NEVER DIES
hi phan phren
Socially Awkward Sloth does that listen to bad blood would understand. That this song is an overlap from bad blood
So true
It thrives
That song is the definition of depression! I love how much this song says exactly how you feel when you suffered depression, it's like drowning and especially when you have just moved to a new place. This song reminds me of my experience... It's a beautiful song!
"and you're scared of being left behind" I'm crying because it's one of my biggest fears yet that's what i feel everyday, even now
This is so normal and relatable. It's terrifying to be alone.
On the video:

The slide you put at the end and the little message that was on it was lovely! Dan, Kyle, Will and Woody would be proud! :)
Efficient lyric video, but still visually attractive. Good job. :3
I needed this today.
Great video with a great font for the great lyrics of a great song by a great band!
This song had an extremely powerful performance live. Dan was banging his temple with his palm during the just listen to your friends they only care and hope you're alright part.

I just might (; Johan Rott
I can't wait until all of Bastille's song become throwbacks.
I heard this song during a skit at a camp I go to. Hands down, my new favorite song.
Same here. I can't get enough of this song.
2:37 is the best part
Head banging vicariously on the daily to this song. ❤️
Best song on that record.
I feel like the draw for me is the deep seated belief from when I was little and really, fully believed no one could really love me, if they seemed to, it would be an elaborate prank or they were using me. They said no one could really love me and it's still so hard to get away.

THIS. IS. PERFECT. I LOVE YOU Wolf Lambert.
This song makes my head tingle.
This is a wonderful song, and I don't know how but I seem to relate to it.
Beautifully made video, you should make more!
Why does the song sound almost like it's being played from another room when it gets to the climax? Kind of quieter and muted?
Why are all there songs so sad I'm crying
when a song has the power to explain what you're living........
This song relates to me a lot. Except I don't have a lot of friends... But this song makes me feel better.
I have yet to find a Bastille song I don't like

Jack Seck ohh yea I noticed that. Thank you!
