  • I cover how to wire and program a PID controller for temperature control. Using a PID controller (Proportional, Integral, Derivative) for temperature control is probably the best way to control an oven temperature when accuracy is important.
    I am using this PID (Proportional, Integral, Derivative) controller to manage the temperatures I need in a cerakote oven I made from an old smoker I picked up for $25. Some examples of where a PID controlled oven or other device could be used are distilling, brewing, incubators, reef tanks, a hen house, lizard habitat a steel or knife tempering oven. There are many possibilities where a PID temperature controller can come in handy.
    This controller was a fun build and I have already used it for Cerakoting. Here's a video on How to Cerakote at Home: • How to Cerakote at Hom...

    Hi I’m setting up a cartridge heater to work on a pid. I’m happy following the diagram but have two questions.
    What about grounding?
    There are no connections that are for a ground wire.
    Also what should one use for the power cable part that actually plugs into the wall. Can you just cut off any old power cable and use that? 😂

    Great video! I’m researching to install a PID on my espresso machine. Your video gives great insight into the wiring and a general overview of how a PID works. I’ve seen most PID systems just turn the heating element on and off like your light bulb, is there a way to instead have the PID adjust the power that goes into the heating element(like what a dimmer switch does) in order to be more precise with the temperature? I’m asking because in the case of an espresso machine, the temperature the PID would be reading is of the boiler not the actual water temperature.

    • @ExtremeDIYGuy

      I don't think a standard on/off PID controller would do that. There may be one out there that can vary the output voltage. I don't know of any of the top of my head though.

    • @michaelhuang2477

      Depends on the PID unit. Some have an autotune feature which figures out how your herer output will affect the temperature and change the off on cycles appropriately

    How is it holding up? I just ordered one to control my glass annealing oven (kiln) I’m slightly worried that the relay is going to fry it only draws 10 amps but you never know.
    I am also going to shoot a video explaining how I intend to use it/install it because it’s a retrofit on a 20 year old kiln, they want $500 to retro fit it for what amounts to a $30 part and a few minutes of wiring

    Jose's question: I seen where several people mount these units in a box (palistic) and what would you think about mounting a cooling fan with vent holes to help keep the relay heat sink cool ... if so would you wire it with the main power supply so it stays on when in use. I also would like to use this to control two different different units one being an oven for powder coating and the other to control the temp of my lead pot for casting lead bullets ... I would probably use a plug as to change the thermocouple. Also I assume you have the temperature adjustment set to the maximum to what ever you are controlling when using this controller. Your video is the best I have found to explain how these controllers work and the simplicity of wiring them ... good teacher thanks for you input!

    • @ExtremeDIYGuy
      @ExtremeDIYGuy  Год назад

      Actually it does use a 110 heating element. To drive a 220 connection I would add a second relay for the 2nd hot leg. A more elegant solution might be a dpst relay that can handle two load seperate circuits

    Great video! Taught me a lot. I'm currently building a powder coating oven. This will require multiple heating elements, which would require multiple pin relays I'm guessing? Any advice on what I'd be looking for? And don't worry, I have an electrician friend, but he talks in code I think and, not really available all the time. I kind of want to understand as much of this as I can on my own...

    • @ExtremeDIYGuy

      I would use the first relay to drive multiple relays downstream they should be wired in parallel. I'm guessing you will probably need a separate circuit for each heater but it really depends on the element and how much it will draw. Your Electrician friend should be able to help with that. Best of luck!

I can get the element to heat up when it’s set on cooling but not when it’s set on heating. Which would be fine but it just keeps heating up and won’t shut off. I’m gonna wire it to a light bulb like you did and see if I can get that to work.

    What about some fuse protection? Wire size is current "fuse" . Vendor should mention it.

      Good point, a 20 amp fuse would do the trick.

      Depending on the setting of the PID controller, yes

    Know this is odd. However, can these PID controllers be used not as a controller but just as a digital display of my kiln temperature? Using thermocouple type K?

    • @ExtremeDIYGuy

      Good question, I dont see why not. Should work fine.

      Thanks-Have my thermocouple connected to correct terminals, turned it on, but not getting an actual temp report… PV sits at 17 and SV cycles between STOP and A..0

    I installed a Twidec/ MV100-B10 Digital Display PID Temperature Controllers Thermostat Regulator on a smoker so I could cure and stabilize wood. I set the temp at 200 degrees. It heats up to about 219 and drops down to 192. How can I shorten that range?

    • @ExtremeDIYGuy
      @ExtremeDIYGuy  2 года назад

      Mine worked correctly out of the box, you might want to contact the manufacturer and see what they say.

      turn it on and run it until it gets to 200 deg. then put it in auto-tune mode. that usually tunes it to a tighter temp window. you will probably have some overshoot in the beginning but a better temp window in the long run.

    I have question. Why many people are ordering PID from China? Are they cheaper or better

      Your guess is as good as mine but if I had to say, probably because they are cheaper from Chine

    I want to use 2 lightbulbs as my heat source. Can I put connect a second lightbulb right along side the first one or do I have to use different ports? Sorry I don’t know shit about wiring

    • @ExtremeDIYGuy
      @ExtremeDIYGuy  2 года назад +1

      You can wire the lightbulbs in parallel and should be fine.

    I notice that the controller is labeled degrees Celcius, but there's no way the heat between fingers is 80C. Is there something you did to switch to Fahrenheit?

      I'm pretty sure mine came from the factory set to Fahrenheit

      As long as they are properly labeled and you can identify them, you should be fine
