Because both my parents are Deaf. So I must use sign langueage to talk with them. Body langueage is like habit for me. Sometimes I was laught at by classmates because my moving of hands maybe funny for them. But, thanks to this video, I think I can ignore that. THANK YOU!!
Hm, this is really interesting. I knew in some studies they say that the intonation is the most important fact to compose a language or whatever like that, but I've never thought of how body language can be one of the most important facts to speak a language. I've learned something really amazing today, nice video!

The survey result was quite interesting! It's reasonable that body languages occupies more than 50% of language. But I had to focus on reporter's body languages more than the contents since it was a bit exaggerated...

Most people are afraid of making a mistake. So think really hard about speaking correctly. This freezes up your mind and you actually cant speak. But if you relax, and just focus on communicating with the other person, even using hand motions to start, you will learn quickly. More than trying to speak perfectly from the beginning, try to talk with native speakers as much as possible. Naturally you will imitate them and speak more like them.

I heard about the same research when I was taking advertising course in Australia, and I felt like all English learners in Japan should know about it as it changed my perspective. Another factor that I also think that could help the English learners is the mastery of the words. If you have a very high mastery of some words such as "get" "take" or any other words that is used very frequent. It is easier than keep learning new words. Ps. I subscribed to your email. hello! it was a first time for watching ur video. u mentioned really good point about speaking and using language. of course maybe ur opinion is based on the study in1971 at UCLA, generally it is kinda old study, because it was long time ago. However it explains exactly about speaking another language I guess. I am a Japanese and i can speak english, might be better than ordinary japanese lol, but i've never studied or been to abroad before. then, some are asking me like, "why u can speak english?" something like that. well... i have no idea still, but maybe i found a hint from this video. thank you. anyway, you talked about features of japanese english speaker, didn't learn a lot of grammar, words or something. yea. exactly. Advanced English is a different topic entirely. I'm still struggling with advanced Japanese. Do you know about the 80/20 rule? Pareto's law? It's that 80% of the results can be done with only 20% of effort. But the remaining 80% of the effort is needed to complete the final 20% of results and get to 100%. That's why you can learn English in a few months, but spend over a decade trying to become a perfect speaker
well..., after our English skills reach beyond a certain level, we really need to learn more vocabulary, which definitely helps us say what we exactly want to say. but you're right. we anyway need to start from basic conversation without plenty of words but with more body language and tones, just like we did as were baby.
Yes, the probably is that people try to learn how to run before learning how to crawl. We need to be able to use simple language well, first, before we move on to 詳しい使い分け etc.

How do you learn about Vocabulary? in conversation. Also, most native speakers dont learn etymology but they know how to speak English. You need to start communicating with people first, and then you learn the grammar, vocabulary, and phrases.

I completely disagree with you. There are other more efficient ways to learn vocabulary, conversations is not one of them. How are you supposed to ever converse if you don't know the right words? You can't tell someone to turn of the stove with just body language and a very limited vocabulary. I have to agree with the person above, vocabulary is the single most important to learn. More than often, if you know the words you can piece it altogether and understand the meaning of the sentence even if you don't have the grammar knowledge, which makes it easier to learn grammar and phrases.
ah really learned a lot from this video. we tend to speak english perfectly. of coure its better to be perfect, but i think sometimes we forget things what we want to express. just be natural n dont hasitate to talk with foreigner.

I grew up in Japan until graduated high-school, however, currently, I've been going to college in U.S. So, I think the reason of why Japanese people are not good at speaking English is because of their culture; what I mean by that is there is one culture in Japan which is ”恥を知れ” that meaning is "shame on you". Japanese people afraid to make mistakes because of the culture, therefore, they are not good at speaking English. Plus the culture makes Japanese people care too much about their English grammars and pronunciations. So, it is difficult for them to speak English.
I am glad that you have been trying to learn Japanese and sharing your perspectives in order to improve Japanese people's English skills as one of a Japanese.

Yes, you need time to practice. You cannot be a perfect speaker from day one. But if you really on the 93% of communication, you can overcome your fear of talking and then you can talk a lot.
you teach Japanese ppl how to communicate with foreigners. The one thing Japanese ppl have to realize is that they have to study more. It might be true that the japanese language is quite different from western ones, but this only excuse why they don't have to be able to speak English fluently. They're different, so what? What such English learners in Japan want to do? To find out the reasons? No, they just want to be a fluent speaker! I really hate such a dispute over the reasons why why why..., but I prefer to discuss how they can improve their English efficiently.
Actually, many people have different reasons for speaking English. Some want to be fluent for ,自己満足, some want a high TOEIC score, some are lonely and want friends or a lover. I chose a specific type of person and make videos for them.

最初はそうだと思います。私は英語が話せます。英語圏のカフェでも働いていました。全く英語ができない時は声のトーン、ボディランゲージでちゃんと伝わります。
でも、ある瞬間から単語力の無さにネイティブから薄っぺらい人間だと思われるようになりました。

船岡けい 上の方の返信のように。最初は全然全く問題ないんです。お酒を飲む場とか軽い恋愛とか。でもいざ、日本の少子化問題、貧富の差、高齢化社会などについて意見を求められると絶対に単語力など必要です。そもそもそれらの話を聞き取る事さえ出来ません。
日常の英会話なら、トーンが優先されますが、議論となるとボキャブラリーのほうが大事だと思います。
関係を築くだけなら一切喋れなくても出来ますよ。

日本人はよく、相槌が多すぎて会話が続かなくなります。
あ、すごいワロタ。毎回参考にさせていただいています。これからも色々ためになる投稿楽しみにしています。
私も仕事で外国人と話すとき声のトーンを変えます。私は女なので日本人と会話をするときは声のトーンを上げ、外国人と話すときは下げます。
今は大体自分でどのトーンが好まれるかを把握をしています。先日風邪をひき声が枯れ低くなりました。日本語はもちろん母国語なので声のトーンが変わろうがコミュニケーションには支障はないです。
無意識にいつもの癖で英語を喋るとき声のトーンを下げてしまいました。するとすごく聞き返されました。もちろん普段より低いトーンから更に下げてしまってはですよね。後日談やはりその日は聞き取り辛かったそうです凹
日本人男性好み→天然で可愛らしい女性 外国人男性好み→自立していてクールな女性

自分は学生時代から英語が苦手でしたが、最近は間違いそう？とか、伝わらない？とか気にせず雰囲気で外国の方と話します。何か尋ねられても英語話せないくせに話します。
後から、あそこはああ言えば伝わったんじゃ！とか色々気付いては苦笑い・・・。
めげませんけどね。でもやっぱりちゃんと言いたいこと伝えたいというのが本心ですね。

しかし、就職セミナーや自己啓発セミナー等と同様に、見た目が1番重要だ、などとこの動画のような本来のメラビアンの法則とは違う事実とは異なった情報が多く使われているようです。

全然関係ないんですけど２回目の「あっ凄い…」で爆笑しました
英語を仕事でも使いますが、（口語でも文でも）大学入試の時はひたすら単語と構文を勉強しましたよ。英語だけなら東大に入った子にも負けませんでした。あと和訳かな。そのあと海外で自分が英語を理解でき、話せる事に驚きました。本当に英語の偏差値60後半70近く取れるなら喋れるし使えると思います。
うん、日本人に足りて無いのって勉強量なだけな気がします。
海外に行って英会話が伸びる人って基礎的な知識がある人だけで、英語が苦手でしたって人は海外に留学しても、１も知らない英語をどう頑張っても会話にひねり出せないんですよね。だから現地の日本人とつるんで留学を棒にふるって人ばっかりです。
でも、友達がこんな動きして話しかけてきたらウザいw

日本人はアメリカ人より相槌を打ちすぎて、最初に僕にとってとてもうるさかったです。今でも、日本語で話している時に、相手が相槌を打ちすぎたら言っていることにフォーカスできなくなります。

何というか日本人が英語を喋れない核心に迫ってる感じがした
勉強になりました！
そう、アーサーさんの英語はとても耳に入ってきます。耳に入ってくるというか、なぜかこの英語は理解できるなぁ、、不思議だなぁ、、という感じです。 以前マナー講師をしていたのですが、人の第一印象は「見た目55％、声38％、7％」の割合で最初の3~10秒で決まってしまうのですよ、だから身だしなみに気を遣いましょう、、という話をしていました。やはり人間は視覚からの情報収集量が圧倒的に大きいのですね。言語も同じだということがよくわかります。
11ヶ月前にこの動画を見たのですが、その時より英語が上達したと感じるようになり、英語圏の方とも英語でコミュニケーションが取れるようになってきた今、改めてこの動画を見て、アーサーさんが仰っていることの意味が深く理解出来ます。 あと、動画の2:03頃に出て来る、「ああ、凄い」という言葉の例。声やトーン、表情の違いで言葉の印象、相手に伝えた意味が、まるきり変化するのがとても良くわかります。私もマナー講師をしていた際は、この例えと同じように、同じ言葉を、所作や表情、声のトーンを変化させて、それぞれ発した際に、どのように印象が変わるのか、実際に演じて指導していました。
氏の研究結果とコミュニケーションに関する考察といった部分はま～置いといて、コミュニケーションを構成する要素の内訳としてデータを見れば頷ける部分も多いですね。
何かオーダーしたり、教えようと思う時に何か指し示すことが出来る対象があれば、コミュニケーションの半分は既にそれで完了し、割合が示すようなレベルで伝えたいことを伝えることが出来ると思います。
それを補足するための単語であったり、トーンであったりと…
言語＝コミュニケーションツール と、して捉えるならば、言語スキル以外でもコミュニケーションを補える要素はわりとあるってことですね。

well..., after our English skills reach beyond a certain level, we really need to learn more vocabulary, which definitely helps us say what we exactly want to say. but you're right. we anyway need to start from basic conversation without plenty of words but with more body language and tones, just like we did as were baby.
Yes, the probably is that people try to learn how to run before learning how to crawl. We need to be able to use simple language well, first, before we move on to 詳しい使い分け etc.

口(mouth)+鳥(birld)=鳴る(cry)
木(tree)+木(tree)=林woods
木+木+木=森forest
少ない(less)+力(power)=劣る(inferior)
日(sun)+月(moon)(月this part has two meaning because someone consider this is half moon or people'body)
=明るい(bright)
小さい(small)+大きい(big)=尖る(sharp) like upside is small but downside is big is to symbolize sharp mountain.
And English word
Circ or Cycl mean circle or surrounding.
semi(半)+circle(円)=半円
circum(周囲)+stance(立つ事)=事情
circum(周囲)cision(切る)=包茎
by(二つ)cicle(円)=自転車。

I completely disagree with you. There are other more efficient ways to learn vocabulary, conversations is not one of them. How are you supposed to ever converse if you don't know the right words? You can't tell someone to turn of the stove with just body language and a very limited vocabulary. I have to agree with the person above, vocabulary is the single most important to learn. More than often, if you know the words you can piece it altogether and understand the meaning of the sentence even if you don't have the grammar knowledge, which makes it easier to learn grammar and phrases.

I grew up in Japan until graduated high-school, however, currently, I've been going to college in U.S. So, I think the reason of why Japanese people are not good at speaking English is because of their culture; what I mean by that is there is one culture in Japan which is ”恥を知れ” that meaning is "shame on you". Japanese people afraid to make mistakes because of the culture, therefore, they are not good at speaking English. Plus the culture makes Japanese people care too much about their English grammars and pronunciations. So, it is difficult for them to speak English.

Yes, you need time to practice. You cannot be a perfect speaker from day one. But if you really on the 93% of communication, you can overcome your fear of talking and then you can talk a lot.

The one thing Japanese ppl have to realize is that they have to study more.
It might be true that the japanese language is quite different from western ones, but this only excuse why they don't have to be able to speak English fluently.
They're different, so what? What such English learners in Japan want to do? To find out the reasons? No, they just want to be a fluent speaker!
I really hate such a dispute over the reasons why why why..., but I prefer to discuss how they can improve their English efficiently.
Actually, many people have different reasons for speaking English. Some want to be fluent for ,自己満足, some want a high TOEIC score, some are lonely and want friends or a lover.
I chose a specific type of person and make videos for them.
