Hardaway Brothers speak

- As reporters, there are some stories that just stick with us through the years. For WGN’s Tonya Francisco, it was the story of Yummy Sandifer, a young man who at 11 years old had a rap sheet longer than most adults.
He died violently in a gangland execution by 14- and 16-year-old brothers.
Now, for the first time, we hear from both of those brothers about that fateful night, what they’ve learned and their hopes for the future.
At 36, Cragg Hardaway is older, wiser and also a little nervous when it comes to the interview.
Twenty years after a notorious murder that thrust him into the national spotlight, he and his younger brother Derrick are talking about the case that changed their lives forever.
“It took me years to admit and accept my role in it,” Derrick said.
It was an unusually chilly September night in 1994 when Yummy was shot twice in the back of the head in a hit ordered by leaders of the Black Disciples.
Cragg was only 16 years old when his mugshot was plastered on TV when he arrested for the murder of Robert “Yummy” Sandifer.
Cragg’s brother Derrick, who was 14 at the time, was too young for his mug shot to be released. He was convicted of driving the getaway car.
Cragg, Derrick and Yummy were all members of the same gang, the Black Disciples. And all three would eventually learn that membership in a street gang comes at a high price.
Chicago recorded 930 homicides in 1994, the second highest on record. Among the dead was 14-year-old Shavon Dean, who shot in the head by a stray bullet during a shooting spree in the city’s Roseland neighborhood that injured two other teens.
Chicago police quickly identified 11-year-old Yummy as the gunman. Gang leaders decided Yummy needed to be silenced because he knew too much. So they ordered Cragg to kill him.
Derrick refused to leave his brother’s side.
"A lot of people don’t know that he actually took me home,” Derrick said. “And I could just feel something wasn’t right, so when I asked him, 'What’s going on,' he told me everything. I refused to let him go by himself.”
“I should have been more of a big brother,” Cragg said. “But at the time, that ain’t the way you think.”
After the murder, both brothers were in custody, and months later, they were convicted felons: Cragg got 60 years for murder and Derrick got 45 for driving the getaway car. They were the only two ever tried in the case even though they say others were involved.
Abandoned by their fellow gang members and isolated from their families, the brothers have spent the past 20 years rehabilitating themselves. Both have gotten their GEDs and associate degrees. Derrick is cultivating his landscaping skills by working in the prison garden and Cragg is involved in anti-violence programs.
But for Cragg, there’s one piece of unfinished business: Reaching out to Yummy’s family, who has not responded to him or WGN.
“I’ll answer any questions that they may have, concerning that night, leading up to that night,” Cragg said.
Both brothers say they think about Yummy’s murder every day. The tears, they say, have long since dried up. Instead, they are focused on getting out one day and making sure others don’t end up on the same path that led them to prison.
“I know most people will listen to this and be like, 'What the hell does this dude know, he been in jail for 20 years, he shouldn’t have did what he did,'” Cragg said. “That still don’t take away from the message: Value your life, you matter, looking in the mirror and tell yourself that you matter.”
Derrick is eligible for parole in 2016. Cragg will be eligible in 2024. Neither brother plans to return to the Roseland neighborhood where they grew up, for fear they could be drawn back into a lifestyle that Derrick says will only lead them back to prison -- or to a grave.

@@righteousmasculine That's sad and that's why its a cycle that needs to be broken. You kill these dudes but Yummy is still gone.
Thanks for talking to the media.
Just listening to the way the Hardaway brothers spoke it seems like Yummy wasn't the only one who was just caught up hanging with the wrong crowd.
I went to school with these cats. Craag was cool we called him CR. Shame this happened man.
That’s awesome
I believe these two are serious and sincere !!!
Yes because they have been sitting in jail for years.
@@Miss.TJ516 they have been released
They are doing just what they said they would do
I wonder how many BD’s been checking up on these guys over the last 20 years.
Good question
4:10 is your answer
The young lady he killed was my cousin, yummy had a criminal record a mile long he was not a innocent little boy
I’m sorry for your lost but that little boy was failed by his mom , dad and grandma so this tragic story is the result of it all
Not that I'm trying to talk down on him but he sounded like a nightmare: strong-arming other kids, picking fights no matter how much bigger or smaller somebody was, etc... and even fighting church-goers when the young lady's mother took him to church. Based on his autopsy and notes from his psychiatrist, months before he was killed, he had been abused. Cigarette burns were found on his neck, buttocks and other places. Even if he had not been in a gang, I believe he still would have terrorized others around him.
I'm in Philly where every other house has a Yummy...
Real rap Philly BMORE, New Orleans fisrt time I seen a 15 year old dope fiend was in Baltimore
The system and reckless streets/adults failed these young men tremendously. This very heartbreaking 💔 #RestEasyYummy
"Regulate" was the shit.
Still is

My aunt loved that song back in the day

Where are all your kids you ghetto queen
Is it possible they can get a second chance? When you're young you don't think that things will go a certain away. They were all products of their environments including Yummy.
I thank God my siblings and I didn't grow up that way. My mom means everything to me.
My bro on my father's side has 4 life sentences and my baby bro passed trying to be a witness.
Please encourage our young black men to go another way. You're not lame cause you don't want to be in a gang. That's being a winner.
They have both been released by now
Still crazy to give 45 to a 14 getaway driver
exactly
If they was white kids they would've did 2 years
I believe the prosecutor's line was that they were super-predators and that they could not be helped. So their conditioning of the jury this way aided in their sentencing. Derrick (the 14 year old getaway driver) was told by lawyers not to react (or get emotional) in the courtroom, and later, it was said that he showed no remorse, when he was only following his lawyers instructions.
@@MediaGoffTV stop it! They would have given white kids a long sentence, too.
Stfu brah its 2021 everybody knows about white privilege 🙄
Just watched the 2023 interview of the Hardaway brothers on DJU-Tv.. their entire demeanor and presentation is completely different
I didn't too. Damn
Your own gang do you in, and yall consider them family . Crazy ass shit.
Dam, 930 homicides in a yr. That's at least 2-3 bodies a day. The 90's was a crazy time. This system is phucked up
Just sad all the way around....
These dudes today are still claiming the gang they were apart of after being locked away for year. They don’t have any remorse, they talk about this situation a lot differently today like they’re proud of it
Now it's time to lead by example... They was kids looking up to the wrong people. Rest in love yummy and hope they can touch and change lives
Him reaching out to his fam and they not responding. They didnt care about that boy
3:10 his voice almost sounds like 21 savage in interviews
Gangs are not the real family. But this does start at the home. Most like with the absence of the fathers to straighten out these kids to keep them off the street gangs. I pray for the future dads to keep this story in mind and please take care of your children, love them and lead them to a better path, much better than what we lived. Teach them.
this is such a sad story
This will always be a sad story almost 30 years later
I was 9 in 1994 growing up in DC and remember how bad it was living in a rough city. We do each other dirty smh crazy times smh
Whoever put the hit out on yummy or told Craag to shoot him should definitely be in jail for life
Robert had such a tragic life in just 11 years 💔
As of May 26, 2024, Derrick Hardaway was released from prison in December 2016 and Cragg Hardaway was released in December 2020 after being convicted of the murder of Robert "Yummy" Sandifer.
Why did they leave out the fact that Yummy shot the gun that killed Shavon?
I'm 40 years of age born in 82 and I just heard this story last year
Your average working productive person isn't able to know about everything in the news...too busy living life and doing things.
Let me ask this had yummy still been alive how do you think he would have been this kid was ruthless at age 11 he was going to be a big big problem for the older Bulls rest well little brother 👏🏿
Sad to say if yumny was still alive he probably be in jail for life or a rival gang member would had smoked him. Their was no hope for bro he was already too far gone sadly
I remember being in Juvenile in 1994 and seeing Yummy on the cover of the time magazine and a picture of him in his casket
I hope that was a wake up call for you
This is what happens when the Father figure is gone. My wife and I have 5 children I hope I set a good example for my sons and hope I do the same when my daughters look for a husband. Nobody is perfect.
Their parents were happily married, they also had a very tight knit family with their grandmother and aunt living within walking distance of their family home. It’s not always a case of the missing dad.
Do you even know what their situation was? Lol. Their dad was present and still married to their mom. He was a software engineer and their mom was an educator (a council member in fact). And their sister was in college at the time with aspirations of becoming a television producer. The boys, themselves were said to have been book smart, with Cragg being somewhat of a math whiz. It's not right to jump to conclusions.
@@Whitechapelchap good for them but a lot of issues today in America is the breakdown of the 2 parent family. So I stand behind my comment, black white green it doesn't matter what color skin they have either.
@@letsgobrandon8375 Okay, I respect your opinion. Sorry.
@@letsgobrandon8375 you can stand by whatever you want, your comment doesn't apply here is THE POINT. This is a perfect example of you can do everything right and your children can still do wrong. So your logic is stubborn and low key ignorant. instead of admitting you were wrong in this case, you want to stubbornly stand by your comment that doesn't apply here like a douche bag.
Fast forward to now and Cragg is doing drunk interviews where u can tell hes so proud of what he did..
Yummys family care about him less than the ppl who took his life
And the streets continue to be more dangerous than ever
If I gotta do 60 years; I’m singing. What are they gonna do. Have me killed?
Something like that 😭🤣
Yes
Lol
