  • Calgary Internationl Airport 50th Anniversary.
    Airport 50.
After mastering aerial photography, I wanted to further my experience and decided to try video photography.
I applied to a local Calgary TV station and volunteered my services with the understanding that I would receive practical training in television camera work.
I later requested and received permission to produce my own TV productions. The first was the Calgary International Airport's 50th Anniversary with a fly-in, airshow and static aircraft displays.
I was given complimentary use of aircraft and a helicopter for the camera operators to ride in to video and complete the story I had envisioned.
For the day, I had the use of a donated Cessna Citation Jet and Sony Canada provided a BetaCam which was at the time the latest in TV cameras.
As this was an historic event for the Calgary International Airport, the visiting aircraft taxied up to the old hangar which was the original terminal building for the Calgary airport. From there the day's events for visitors began.
After an exciting and event filled day, the Citation departs the airport with credits rolling as the aircraft climbed through the clouds.
I produced, filled in on camera of the arriving and departing sequence, also other areas. I also filled in as an interviewer.
The TV station aired the production a number of times before it was shelved. I obtained a VHS copy that I recently transferred to DVD, then to this mp4 you are watching.
Some years later, the TV company acquired new owners and most of the tape library was discarded. This is the only known extensive video documentation made of this airport event.
As this occasion is historical, I felt that I should endeavour to preserve the history by making it available and allow those interested to view this exciting event.
