My husband died Jan 2022. One Friday I went to our favorite restaurant for dinner. It had been a particularly hard week and I kept asking for a sign everything was going to be ok. When I started the car, satellite radio was on the Broadway channel and this song started playing. Music was a big part of our lives and we both loved this song and its message. Definitely a message from him.

At the time that Rogers and Hammerstein wrote this musical, the subject of abuse was taboo. No one talked about it. You kept it to yourself. I saw the stage version at the Fifth Avenue Theater in Seattle shortly after my daughter died in a mass shooting. She had been abused by her boyfriend, and she had had enough and was ready to move on. He didn't like it, and he killed her and 3 others before committing suicide by cop. The lyrics are true and hit home. "When you walk through a storm, hold your head up high and don't be afraid of the dark......"

Susan you are very brave brave to tell your story. It’s difficult you will always have the wonderful memories only a mom has. Hopefully they can out weigh the bad ones. She was strong to walk away from him. I have been going through this with my 20 year old granddaughter. I hid her out for months. She finally moved in with her dad and went to court. He did not show up the first time. The second time he did with his mother. My Granddaughter told of the abuse and other things he did. It was hard because her Father had to hear it all. The judge told him never ever ever go near her. Not even the same town. He was given a one year restraining order. Her brothers and dad take her everywhere. She is coming to visit for three months and she knows he doesn’t know where I live or where her sister lives. She said she is happy to be able to go shopping by herself.
I am praying for you My dear Susan to make life easier and gentler for you. Hugs prayers and love Deb xx Blessings always Susan 🌹♥️🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏

this is one of the best endings of a musical in my opinion.
billy gets to redeem himself in Julie's eyes and gets a chance to tell her that he loved her as best he could in spite of what he did to her.
he also gets to teach his daughter that regardless of the mistakes he made in life the daughter has to stand on her own two feet.
I think that was his purpose of coming back to Earth.

One of just two films made in the CinemaScope 55 format. This used a 8 perf negative format on 55.625 mm film stock. This gave a frame size about twice the linear size, four times the area, of standard 35 mm CinemaScope. The frame size was even about 1.4 times the area of a 65 mm Todd-AO negative.
Release prints were on standard 35 mm CinemaScope. There was a proposed wide film print format with the frame size reduced to about 75% of the negative , with a 6 perf pulldown and the width thus made available used for stereo magnetic sound tracks. This format was never used.
I don’t know if the original 55.625 mm negatives still exist, and whether they could be scanned, but If they could it would be interesting to see what a good 4K DCP made from them would look like; I’ve only ever seen the film as a dirty and scratched 35 mm print with mono optical sound.
The other CinemaScope 55 film by the way was The King and I.

The Carousel is an adoptation of a hungarian play "Lily" by Ferenc Molnár, written in 1909. The original play takes place in Budapest, but it was so popular, that was introduced in New York and London. It was then, when Oscar Hammerstein noticed it, who received the rights for the musical adoptation from Ferenc Molnár....

Don't ever remake as it would be impossible to come even close to the original

I've already seen a professional production that interpolated lines for Julie condemning Billy's abusiveness. Leaving that issue aside, however, I actually would like to see a remake or at least a high-quality proshoot of an excellent full production of *Carousel,* because (as many fans of the movie version are likely unaware) the movie omits several songs, including most of the connecting material that makes the "If I Loved You" sequence a continuous musical scene on stage, the opening to "When the Children Are Asleep," the clam recipe in "This Was a Real Nice Clambake," "Blow High, Blow Low" (which was filmed but was cut and is lost), "Geraniums in the Winder," and "The Highest Judge of All." Even the Carousel Waltz isn't presented completely intact. There's just a lot more music in this musical as originally written, and as good as the film is, it would be great if people could see and hear the whole score, which was Rodgers' favorite of all his works.
