    Wahoo has become my favorite fish off NJ in late July and Aug these days. We've gotten a pretty consistent bite between 20 and 30 fathoms on our lumps. I kind of do a hybrid spread to be able to also get bluefin, yellowfin, and Mahi. I honestly get the most wahoo bites on an 18in pink splash bar I run on the shotgun rod with and islander pink flasher with a ballyhoo.

    You are a little bit crazy lifting that fish up w that lure in its mouth, one good head shake and it can toss those hooks right into you or someone else on the boat. That would wreck your day!

    Interesting theory on the empty wahoos being the ones to eat. In the northern gulf, we routinely catch them full of pogies and even blackfin in the wintertime. Potentially different behaviors based on region

    Hi Mike,
    Just saw your wahoo video today. I’ve fished for wahoo for years off of Baja Mexico.
    Your early bite is true when fishing inshore in the Cabo San Lucas area. But away from the resort areas fishing offshore like Alijos Rocks, the Ridge and Offshore island it’s an all day bite.
    Over the past 40 years of chasing wahoo I’ve found that during dark of the moon the hoos will move into popular fishing grounds. Have you found the same in your area?

    Great video, we are looking forward to doing some trolling for Wahoo this year in the keys as we just picked up a new boat;) Thank-you for the great detail on the spread, my question is do you find that you have better luck turning to the starboard or port for quick turn arounds with your configuration?

  • @henrytowers4180

    Would you say slowing the troll this spread would be good to target grouper and barracuda in 20-40 ft?

    Nomad claims their dtx 220 will run at a depth of 50' and the 200 at 40'. Have you found their claim to be incorrect? You indicated 8-12' for the 200 and only 20' for the 220.

    Thanks for your informative videos as always. Two questions: 1) how are you tying the braid to the 150 leader knot? crimp? other? 2) your 220 lb on the plug looks to be about 4' is that correct?

    Have DTX made an effort to get more "barb" on their hooks? They still look pretty smooth to me. I've heard mixed reviews from people that have lost fish even with pressure on that they claim wouldn't have been lost on a MagTrak or a typical Marauder-style lure default hook. If being without a pronounced barb makes them track better then I guess you just take more strikes for more losses and enjoy the extra action. Anyway, great show and I hope some of that ended up wrapped in bacon.

    • @FloridaSportFishing
      @FloridaSportFishing  2 года назад +1

      Its true, very small barbs on those hooks, they are BBK hooks, so someone might need to have a word with them. I have lost fish to pulled hooks too but impossible to know if that was the cause. The 60lbs braid youre using is probably not hollow core, so no splicing in the topshot. Whats your favorite way to connect a not-so-crazy-thick braid with a 130lbs topshot? FG? Thank you!

    Looking for a utility, do it all inshore, bay, beach, pier fishing spinning rod and reel. Something hopefully less the $200. Do you have any recommendations Captain Mike? Thanks!

      There are plenty of off the shelf combos that will meet your needs, in that price bracket though its more important than ever to take good care of equipment, wash/dry after every use and make sure to keep all moving parts well lubed. Hey Kapt.
    I am a Dutchman in Curacao.
    I follow your videos day by day.
    Is there a special reason why you use only hard lure this morning ?
    What is the special part of the body of the wahoo for you to hook the gaf in a wahoo ?

      I use nothing but Diamond XHard mono, as light as 150lb, on my plugs and ballyhoo rigs when fishing for wahoo. Haven’t lost one yet. Only time I use steel is when I’m high speed trolling

    I usually see guys still in gear while fighting a fish 6-7knots-ish in order to keep tension. Why do you guys go down to idle speed?

    • @FloridaSportFishing
      @FloridaSportFishing  2 года назад +1

      Yes, we typically maintain forward momentum to keep max tension on line and prevent pulled hooks. in this case we were simply slowing everything down for filming purposes, if I recall correctly we had already caught a glimpse and appeared fish was hooked real well. Fortunately it all came together.
