Capt Mike, Drifting / anchoring / floating anchor is key and is very dependent to wind. Outside Miami current is more or less always south to north around 2 kts so if zero wind you would be drifting 2 knots north bound by GPS and zero by surface so you just follow the column, but wind can make you go 360 deg. with a north wind keeping you stationary you now do 0 speed GPS but drifting 2 knots on surface, 8 oz weight already start getting on light side and keeping bottom gets difficult, if the wind is strong enough to push you south bound you def need a sea anchor to stay with the water column or even a pound of weight won't help you keep bottom. 40lbs braid and 30 lbs fluoro. regularly hitting some 29 / 30" never got bigger than 30. Yet... Always feel bad when not able to send back down a < 18" lively. Any fishing in more than 140' and it gets very hard for the too small ones to survive the trip up and back down. Took the boat to dry-tortuga in december month and this was not fishing it was just hauling fish, any gear set-up any technic just drop any dead bait at the bottom and instantly get a grouper or a mutton at least 24", hope it stays that way, I will personally not go back for fishing, dry tortuga, let them re-create over there and wait for them at the coast. If we all go catch them there it will be the end of them at the coast.
Captain Mike, I recently discovered your channel as I'm preparing for 5 multi-day trips on the American Patriot over the next 6 months. I love how you share in detail about the rigging, gear, technique, and many other helpful tips. I've learned so much from watching your videos I feel I will be much better prepared to be successful. I've been searching, but do you have any videos on American Red Snapper as we will be targeting them in June and July?
Nice new series Mike. I follow all your platforms and appreciate what you put out there. Kerry Hennessy (Blue Rybo full tower/Classic Mako black half tower). See you on the water
Hi Capt Mike how can you fish 8 oz sinker straight to the bottom when I go button fishing most of the time even using 16 oz bank sinker can't keep the line in straight line with the boat I know all depends how strong the current is but i noticed even on calm days when drifting an 8 oz sinker don't really stay in straight line with the boat. I'm wondering if you ever putting a trolling motor on that 39 seavee?
Thanks Capt. Mike for the tips. Awesome content as always. Planning on targeting some muttons out here in Miami, right out of Haulover this Sunday. Hope to catch a trophy or 2. Tight Lines.

Just bought myself a ocea jigger 2000. Tackle store had a $70 discount and loaded up 30lb braid for free. Its not metered but it was free.

Thanks for another great video. BTW Capt. Wicho is the best in Key Largo, Keys Reel Fishing.
What type of knot do you recommend for this setup?
This info probably spot on for red snappers too since they are pretty much twins.

Rod is too expensive. Its all in the details for the right value. $700 - $800 for a set up. You can do better than that. Good vid🤙
