Hey Rummates, today we're going to be talking about the portrayal of high schoolers in media and how often times they are overs€xualized for the sake of making the show "edgy". There's a lot to discuss so let's talk about it.

They say it's not "supposed" to be watched by kids, but I see right through that. Because the casting and all of the promotion surrounding the show as well as teen fashion and makeup stores revolving around "euphoria" looks, that is exactly the audience shows like this are intended for. It's actually disturbing to me, because when I was a kid, Degrassi was controversial and it was actually real and taught me a lot, but I watched a few episodes of Euphoria and I was just like wow times have changed. It's conditioning.

Totally agree with you. On one hand, yes, many people discover their sexuality in high school. So dealing with that topic in general is not the problem, I think. The problem is how glamorized it is. It is always supposed to be hot, everything works, everyone knows everything. That's not how your first experiences are at all! It is awkward, you have so many questions, it is embarassing... That's why I like the way sex education portrays that topic.
And I also agree with you that there should be more shows set in college (even though I don't understand how college in america works at all haha), there are so many interesting things about it! They kind of imitate in a way. from behaviors and way of dressing/talking. And even dealing with situations that maybe be similar in their lives that they see on TV. Not to be dramatic but …. It’s slightly dangerous to allow this type of stuff to be seen by young kids. They just absorb they don’t know better. But I love your commentary per usual!!! ❤️💜

I agree. I’m currently in high school and I’ve seen several people look at shows like euphoria and gossip girl and apply them to their own personality traits, luckily not to the extent that the shows themselves go to but definitely in the sense of adopting how certain characters talk or their approach to high school as a whole. The over-sexualization of high schoolers honestly doesn’t feel like an “accurate representation of the high school experience” like some shows (ex: euphoria) claim to be, it feels like a bunch of adults looked at social media and decided that’s what modern teens do

Honestly, I'm the "cool 30 something auntie" so my teen cousins and nieces/nephews talk to me about everything. Even they said Euphoria is unrealistic. They're not a bunch of nymphos popping pills and swapping nudes. They do homework, go to the mall, eat food, talk, and do normal things. They even said no one really throws parties like that and parents aren't "OK, I support any and everything you do". I spaced the age these characters are. I agree, college would've been better.

I feel like another problem is that real life is also starting to reflect it, I have seen so many middle schoolers and younger teens looking older than me wearing tons of makeup and mature clothing. like yes give them some freedom of expression but also some of this stuff leads to serious image issues like EDs, unhealthy and dangerous sexual situations and an overall dislike for their natural selves and identity issues

My kid isn't getting full freedom of expression if her freedom of expression results in her looking 20 at 14 which is what happens sometimes. Aside from all the perverts in Hollywood I think high school is just a convenient setting for a show. A lot of it can be blamed on lazy writing.
All the characters see each other every day, many might not have a job yet, it will have people from many walks of life whereas a college setting will have kids that a) actually got into college and b) could afford college

  • @deemidust
    @deemidust 2 года назад +361

I can tell you that a majority of people who attended high school were not experiencing these major things, maybe some people were, but this was not the rule but the exception. Hollywood's over-saturated with high school dramas that tackle heavy handed subject matter, which is fine, but is it too much to ask for a fun slice-of-life saccharine disney-version of high school dramas? There needs to be a balance and the message being pushed to impressionable kids is that everybody's doing sex, drugs and all that stuff when that's not necessarily true half of the time.
I really wish more studios would make drama shows that tackle the heavy subject matter in college or post-grad life, because it works so well there, but this ain't it. It also doesn't help that the characters are portrayed by adults who are meant to be minors are seen partaking in adult activities which has always given me a weird feeling. Seeing minor characters on-screen doing stuff like that just screams sExUaLiZaTiOn for me. Again, why not tackle these heavy handed issues in a college/post-grad setting? Because it's the trend to have high schoolers go through this stuff. Another problem I have is that there's no balance to the content, meaning that either the drama is super super dark with no sprinkles of hope or happiness at all, that extreme isn't good. Again, people have their own preferences but honestly, can we just get more shows that are less edgy and dark but more optimistic?
This is an interesting commentary vid and I hope you do more of these because it allows for people to have an open discussion on these issues.

My sister was reluctant to watch Euphoria when it first came out even though me and my other siblings loved it.
I didn’t get her reasoning about it being weird watching a show about high-schoolers with so much sexual content.
To me, this was a narrow minded and shallow take.
Over the past almost 3 years now my mindset has changed. I still appreciate the show but they definitely should’ve made them college students.
Certain scenes are needlessly extra like with the drawn out dick/ass shots…
Idk love the show from a writing/narrative stand point but I don’t blame anyone over high school age for not liking it.

I think it’s definitely supposed to be a form of entertainment/wish fulfillment for teenagers in high school. When I was 14, Riverdale was my first teen drama. A few years prior, a lot of media for tweens very much, if they weren’t about kids their age, it was about kids in high school with a very sanitized gaze but still very wish fulfillment like. It was all about the nerdy girl and the popular guy and popularity contests and first dates, kisses, and tame parties with no alcohol. However, by the time you’re actually in high school, you’re very disillusioned by that and you also may find it boring because high school is no longer this Amazing Exciting Anomoly, you’re actually in it. So teen entertainment needed to be “spiced up”
So they doubled down on the wish fulfillment. They cast beautiful actors already in their 20s and past “Awkward teen phases” with perfect hair and makeup, beautiful aesthetic expensive clothes, and gave them incredibly interesting wild lives that shifts from genre to genre Riverdale and Pretty Little Liars were mystery genre so they went on to solve mysteries while Euphoria is more of a “drama” drama if that makes sense. These teenagers go to amazing parties with alcohol and maybe drugs, fall in perfect love that cause ship wars, have a lot of sex that is completely sexy and devoid of any awkwardness (added with expensive lingerie most teens can’t buy) and there’s no talk of the stressful thing that encapsulates most teenagers lives: school or homework or tests outside of the setting. It created a lot of insecurities within me going through high school, I thought that I was ugly and boring.
It definitely is super suspicious for adults to make such curated media for teenagers that almost seems to sell things like sex or drugs or to look at their teenaged characters through a hypersexualized gaze. It’s strange how this is the norm.

i feel like these over the top teen shows get so much attention because of the way the topics in them are glamorized and considered "cool" compared to how actual teenagers live. when you're a teenager (and in college too tbh) there's this peer pressure that if your life isn't wild you're missing out. let's be honest, the only reason these studios get away with it is because the actors have all gone through puberty and look x10 more attractive in these situations than a literal child ever would. just imagine an actual 15-year old dressed to go to euphoria high and it loses some of the appeal. most high schoolers just... don't look like that because they aren't meant to be s*xualized in the first place. (not to mention that teen s*x is meant to be awkward and not professionally choreographed)

Once those were phased out, and other human rights and child laws were introduced, as well as school becoming mandatory, children were given time to experience their adolescent years. "Teenagehood", in the way we think of it, only really came about approx. 100 years ago

Kennie J.D. discussed this topic at length in her Euphoria video. I agree with both yours and her sentiments; shows, specifically ones like Euphoria, that tackle heavy subject matter and feature a lot of nudity (of supposed minors) can have a lot of extremely problematic undertones. The decision to set these shows in high school is strategic [and fully intentional].
Like you mentioned, why not age the characters up and put them in a more “adult-like” setting, e.g. college? Then the viewers aren’t met with feelings of discomfort when watching aforementioned “minors” engaging in explicit content on screen. There’s no reason, as much as I enjoy the show, that there should be as much nudity as there is in Euphoria.
You can have the understanding that characters are about to engage in sex without showing nudity; the audience isn’t stupid! Anyway, I recommend Good Trouble on Freeform/Hulu. It’s set a bit after college and despite the occasional drama (which is expected), the way they deal with real world topics, sexuality and adult themes is *chef’s kiss*

If this were to happen in a college setting not only is rue technically an adult the entire sequence would’ve turned out differently. As a whole i feel like a lot of people are kinda jaded but the fact that high schoolers are highly sexual beings so it makes sense. Hormones are heavy and so is rebellion. I have seen alot of differing reasons as to why the teen drama genre is like this and i like that you so address some of those reasons (being more relatable, easy drama for narrative fodder, more easy to rank in profits) And I do agree that there definitely is pedophilic over & undertones present. One reason as why college isn't a super common setting is that college has become more of a thing that people of more privileged backgrounds experience therefore not everyone can relate because alot more people are opting not to go to college at all (plus what you said as it not being the same as a high school set story). Although I do agree that not every story has to be relatable to everyone because we as human beings all have different experiences with our circumstances and environments affecting us in differing ways

Also, portraying teen characters like this get very old, very fast. As someone in high school, I don't have the same freedom as Ginny and Georgia characters, or euphoria characters. I can't explore myself in the same way that they do, or I'd get in serious trouble (that's another thing, what happened to consequences of your actions???) Portraying teen characters in this way and only this way takes up space, where other teen shows could talk about topics besides sex, substance use, etc. Yes, some teens are sexually active, but not all of us are. Where are our teen shows? What about topics like existentialism, or discrimination? Those are things that I've had to deal with as a teen, but I don't see any teen shows that portray that. There are so many different high school experiences, and portraying only one version is very limiting. there's only so much you can do when you portray teenagers the way they are portrayed in the media. In the future, I wish to see less oversexualization of teen shows, and more diverse portrayals of teenagers.

Honestly, I agree with everything. I also think that sexualizing too much also makes teenagers who see these series or movies be willing to engage in sexual activities sooner, maybe even without knowing what they are getting into. The same could also be said with drugs and tobacco, many series for the young audience have these themes and as you said in the video they do it to shock. Which makes many teenagers get involved with drugs (that’s why movies like Beautiful Boy are so important) and tobacco at an early age just to be able to belong because of these characteristics, as they are romanticized in fiction nowadays.
    Amazing vídeo 💕

The best solution would be for Hollywood to create more shows or movies about college that is allowed to be dark and Highschools story’s that are similar like victorious and the old Disney shows that are still loved to this day, so that the 13 year olds don’t feel pressured to grow up so fast.

Most of these teen dramas that are hyper sexualised aren’t even for teens who are the same age as the characters but the younger teens will still watch it. Like Riverdale for example, at 16 I definitely had no idea how sex is supposed to be but shows make it seems like it’s perfect the first time. I totally agree with you and glad someone is talking about this. In my opinion I feel like it’s more realistic to dive into those heavier topics in college (in a more graphic way?), because like you said you have access to so much more in college, more freedom, questions about who you are for really wild shit to go down. idk for many people but, I feel like I changed the most and questioned more things, learned about the world in college vs high school. It’s interesting what you say about relatability because 90% of the time I feel like I don’t relate to any high school serious dramas. Personally I think Degrassi did it well, especially the fact that they used people who actually LOOKED like high school students (at least from what I remember) and i think that’s part of the problem…over sexualizing the teenage experience vs being true to depicting children who are learning about their sexuality, identity, relationships, the world, etc. 🤷🏽‍♀️

I found you here after finding and watching your breakdown of Euphoria Ep7 where I left a very complimentary comment. And here, as I did there, I find that you are not only a fan of TV and other entertainment, but also a highly intelligent and insightful individual all around. And while, like you, I am no prude, in fact, I lean more in the opposite direction when it comes to entertainment and my personal life, I too find it disturbing that TV shows like Euphoria which are so centered on sex, drugs, emotional and physical abuse, and other dark issues, are based in High School settings. And even being from an entirely different generation than yourself, and although I had an extreme interest in sex from too early an age, I agree that it IS sad that high school life depicted on screen during the past decade or more has become so openly and exaggeratedly filled with not only the topic of sex and drugs, but with visual depictions of it.
At least back in the day, if sex was an integral part of a story, and if it was actually even IN a scene, it was darkly lit, carefully choreographed and edited, and so short a scene that it barely titillated even the horniest of viewers. And it was NEVER with high-school age characters. And while you are correct in realizing that nowadays shows like Euphoria are produced because they make boatloads of money, I believe you are wrong to say that this trend won't change. Because it will. It will increase. Since TV and film makers produce whatever is profitable, as every other business does, they will only continue to make more of the same, and even make them more extreme.
Anyway, I appreciate your intelligent take on this topic, and thank you for posting this video. As the Brits say, "Good on you."

Every character has something that has either happened to me or to people im close to. I relate immensely to that show. Its a show made for high schoolers. I think its content can be largely educational for younger viewers, (13 or 14yo,) but any 17 year old who has gone through the things they have and can therefore relate to the show, those things wouldve happened euphoria or not. As far as younger audiences go, I think theres an argument to be made that teaching sexual content properly just encourages safer sex from teenagers, and even if more frequent, its still safer than occasional uneducated sex. For older people, though, this is just entertainment. Any show made with people in their thirties in mind that sexualizes teenagers is made because its popular for people in their thirties to sexualize teenagers. When the target audience is for older teens, i dont see a problem with it.

A former high school teacher of mine was preying on former students after they graduated (how long after they graduated varied on students). He was maybe at least ten years older then most his students. He was also quite attractive and charismatic so many students and staff liked him.
Early 2020 before pandemic he reached out to me via social media and we reconnected. Everything seemed fine and cool….. at first….. even when he began to tell me “stories “ and “secrets” about my former classmates and other teachers. Yes now I’m aware that back then i should have considered that a red flag. Eventually he seemed to flirt with me. I hate to admit this but I did like it. He claimed to be “straight “ (and was/ probably still is in a long engagement with a woman)…….. that turned out not to be true. The flirting then turned into “specific types of conversations”. Nothing went beyond texting and phone calls (at least from my end all I did was talk and text). I began to feel guilty and actually tried pulling away and told him quote “maybe we shouldnt talk to each other like this anymore”……. He then started hooking up with other guys to make me jealous and would keep doing that every time I tried to pull away from him (oh and his fiancé is a woman)… Then when I wouldn’t put out for him (even when sometimes I really wanted to but couldn’t) he would shame me, gaslight me and treat me bad like I’m the bad guy. Later on I found out he did the same thing (or worst like actually hooking up) with multiple former classmates of mine.
When I saw that whole storyline with Rafa and Max on Gossip girl I felt sick and disgusted because my former teacher was a lot like Rafa (at least I didn’t go as far as Max did….. no where near that) and hated Rafa and would argue with people that defended the “relationship”. Not to mention how growing up that stuff was so normalized. I cut all ties with my former teacher but the hurt and hating myself is still there (wasn’t that long ago).

Seriously, I had several teachers at my highschool that were in relationships or even married to (MUCH yoinger) ex-students. And one of my teachers preyed on a female classmate, gave her gifts and cringy messages. In hinsight, all of this was SO INAPPROPIATE.

I hear you about sexualizing high school kids on these shows. I think at the very least Euphoria uses actors who are in their 20's.
If you have the stomach for it, I'm sure you've heard of an early 90's movie called "Kids." Not only did this cult classic not age well, the actors are actual kids. Ranging from 10-18. It's pretty disturbing.

It’s like I have to choose between watching these people in high school who I don’t relate to or watching other shows where they’re like married and have a mortgage and have kids and I can’t relate to those shows anyways. I want the in between

Degrassi is the rare example that got it right. Casting ages for the ages they were portraying. It did "go there", but it was far more realistic to the average suburban teen and way less sexualized. However, I'm nervous what the HBO reboot of Degrassi is gonna bring

imo the portrayal of college would/could be as relatable as the portrayal of high school because i think for the majority of high school students, high school itself was not remarkable, but the things that coincidentally happened during that time period were, and could just as easily happen after characters are 18. and for college not being accessible, some characters could just not attend that college but are tied to the characters who do, whether they work together, are related, share a hobby, etc. like fez and his household don't really have connection to the high school (maybe he used to attend but its not a major plot point) but they are still integral characters, so by having more characters who arent in the school setting, it could still be largely relatable

Great view I do agree the overkill of sexualized teens is alot. I would disagree with saying that having shows in high school instead of college. High school shows gives a voice and story to teens. Not everyone goes to college or can afford to go. Also shows like Degressi started in the 80s and they talk about heavy tops, the movie Breakfast club too talk about suicide and more.

I think a show just needs a setting. School or work are usually the settings. The story we usually get is told about the people are the outcasts or nerds. When they show the popular or bad kids it’s brief. To me shows like Euphoria are about that “wrong crowd” that gets avoided. If we can allow teen mom to exist (real minors) then I can see a show like euphoria. But I do believe the amount of nudity does take away certain scenes. Sometimes it feels more like a quota has to be met than authentic nudity. College (yes I went) has a different dynamic than high school. You don’t go with all your childhood friends, you don’t live under your parents roof, it’s just different. I write screenplays but I usually write to adults because I know what it’s like to be a teen but I don’t know shit about teens in this day and age.

  • @chloehorgan3313

It’s the reason I don’t think I can watch the GG reboot...like, I just feel too old and having the adults in it be complicit 🤢
It’s weird tho, to be honest, Euphoria is the closest thing to my “teenage experience”, some stuff over exaggerated, some stuff not😕
I think it’s a way to portray characters making dumb decisions, you know things that “adults” would never...it’s always been around tho, the original Beverly Hills 90210 was pretty risky back in the day. But yes, I would love more college aged focused drama-loved the student stories in HTGAWM, even if I did yell angrily at the tv more than once 🤣
Keep up the good work, really am enjoying these videos

even though you showed a lot of clips from it, i think that degrassi is one of the few teen shows that avoids the trap of oversexualizing their characters. mainly because every iteration of the show casts age appropriately so it would be super creepy to have their mainly underaged cast in super sexual situations, but even outside of that degrassi has always been super tasteful when it comes to sex and all that, and its a teen drama that is actually meant for teens and tweens to watch which i cant say for shows like euphoria or 13 reasons why, which feel like teen shows aimed at adults rather than kids. this video made some amazing points !

Also everyone’s responsible for what they choose to watch but can we talk about how much of an influence these shows have on some people especially teenagers and young adults who are watching this 😭 I feel like I’ve been seeing a lot of people feel bad because they felt their teenagehood was or IS “boring”, they aren’t sexually actively or partying or doing any substances and watching this so they feel bad as a teen or freshly young adult looking back. Again some do relate, so I understand the representation of these events and issues but as EVERYONES saying, we don’t need to see every little thing tbh the show could use a lot of “fade to black” cuts 💀 and it wouldn’t hurt to have a coming of age show that includes the other things different teens like to do ie interests besides s€x and drugs?? 😭 it exists...you can still have a drama without including that stuff so heavily. I know it’s important for people to feel more comfortable to talk about s€x (esp healthy convo’s) and drugs if that’s what they’ve been through and there are teens who have! But this is a show ab high schoolers, we don’t need to see a full fledge scene of soft core. If you’re unable to make a teen or college even (though with college it’s at least better because they’re adults! But again there’s way more to college than that and I think that still puts everyone in a box), drama without making everything a s€x scene I don’t think you need to air your show 😬 and it wouldn’t hurt to throw a healthy relationship into the show to show esp young impressionable viewers that not everything has to end up a certain way.

I don’t know if this is different in usa, but i mexico where I’m from, highschool was definitely the time where we all tried alcohol, drugs and sex for the first time. It was also where we would wear the sluttiest clothes and try to act all grown up. After high school ends it just all calms down and your life becomes a bit more balanced between parties and the serious stuff.
